- Today I show you how to install a Kenwood Stereo into a 2001 Toyota Tundra without the bose system. This double din stereo fits great in my first gen tundra and has made a great addition to the interior. Adding this head unit means I now can play music through my phone, either by USB, Aux, or Bluetooth. For me, this has definitely made my truck a lot better of a driving experience! No more crackly audio, and it pairs great with my kicker door speakers (previous video). Check out some of the links in the description for more info!

My crutchfield directions were super vague. Had an easy install today thanks to this video. Appreciate you man!!
Glad the video helped!
Out of all the installation videos, yours was the most help and you actually showed how to get to the amp wiring which I was lost at. Thank you for this video.
Glad it helped! Thanks for commenting!
This is the video I was looking for, thank you!
Glad it helped!
I just finished my 04 pathfinder suspension lift mostly due to you. Im sad that your ole pathy was eating up oil, but im glad she got you around, and that you found something new to be excited about. Love your stuff brotha, Keep up the great work!
Also yeah, the stereo looks like it came out of the factory that way. Very nice upgrade.
Thanks for following along man, I appreciate it. I'm glad my videos/info have been helpful to you. Selling the pathfinder was a bummer of a situation, I was hoping to keep it around for longer.
Thanks, pretty happy with the stereo, I had something similar in my R50 and it did great.
When my 2000 Tundra's stereo started making grinding noises I thought I might have to go without the radio. What were the chances I'd find a replacement stereo that could be installed without too much cost or trouble for my older truck? Your video gave me the details and confidence to replace the stereo myself and I'm very pleased with the results. Thank you!
I’m super glad the video helped! Thanks for leaving a comment
Duuuude this video saved me I was about to wire a whole knew connection because I couldn’t find the right querying harness I never noticed the wires down below
Hey man! I’m glad it helped, thanks for leaving a comment
Love the video! Doing my own install on my 02 Tundra! Quick question though how did you access the screws and the amplifier? I’m stuck at that spot! Haha
Dude, thank you so much. I was trying to put in a new stereo but I didn’t know I was going to have to take out the amplifier also and didnt know how You showed me exactly what I needed.
Glad it helped dude! Thanks for commenting
I am glad I stumbled onto this video. I am going to be installing a ATOTO S8 this weekend. Can you explain why you have to bypass the stock amplifier?
What crimp butt connectors did you get? I didnt see that listed, and i was surprised at how many different kinds there were
Don’t disconnect the positive lead first. Always disconnect negative first then the positive. When reconnecting do positive then negative.
Good and easy tank you
If you are replacing a radio with navigation on a 2007 Sequoia, you will need a digital cable adapter. This one worked for me: AXXESS TYTO-01 Toyota Digital Amplifier Interface 2001-2015.
Thanks for the video, buddy. Ill be replacing mine soon! Did you have to bypass thexstock amplifier or was there a reason you decided to? Just curious
The adapter harness for the stereo only plugs in to one harness in the vehicle- by plugging into that harness, you necessarily bypass the stock amp
Probably worth mentioning the climate control needs to be plugged in or the stereo wont power on. I took the panel off and disconnected the harness to make more room to work and could not get power. Took it out and plugged it into a battery on my workbench and worked fine. Tested all connections and were good. Finally gave up and put my dash together without the stereo because i needed a/c. Then one day i looked at the harness sticking out and said lets try again. Powered up fine.
Great vid man. How’s the quality & volume treating you? I’m debating on getting this Kenwood or the Sony gs900 for a little more power
No complaints here. It’s loud enough for me, quality is satisfactory and better than stock
Hey Tyler, I watched another video that talked about an ASWC. Idk what that is but did you need one?
I’m not sure what that is - everything I show in this video is what’s in the truck
Great vid.
Thanks for watching!
Hell ya man thanks
Glad it helped!
on the car side of the harness what is the orange and white wire you didn't use for?
Where is part 1 to this video I have went all through your videos to find it and can’t
This door speaker install would be "Part 1" th-cam.com/video/ROjVwNgTmvc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=38XCvhwT__678sBG
Excuse me, how many inches is the stereo? And is it a painting or does the stereo have another type of shape?
I just bought this stereo, and went to Best Buy to purchase the harness. Although it didn’t fit. Into the car.. I’m not sure why. Any ideas because I’m no expert in this haa.
How Did you get both screws holding in the stock amplifier out
If I remember correctly, I just barely caught the screws with a screwdriver- it was tight and I was close to stripping them.
If you pop the panel out that has the cig plugs you can reach up and pull out the brackets.
Great video! Can you point me to which harness I need? So that my radio can fit properly in my dash? Or do I not need one?
I have the adapter linked in the description. If you have a different vehicle or stereo, crutchfield can help you make sure you’ve got the right one.
Sorry, I should have specified haha, i meant the stereo installation dash fitment kit. aka the plastic that fits around the radio onto the dash.@@208Tyler I guess it looks like it fits just the stereo itself without any additional fitment accessories.
Where do you get the wire harness can u send the exact link
It may very based on trim level and model year, I suggest using crutchfield.com to find what you need
If you bypass stock amp why It still there? I’m having trouble understanding. Got a 2000 tundra
What don’t you understand? Bypass the amp. Unplug it and plug straight into the back of the stereo
So are the colors a standard thing for all stereos or do I need to make sure I’m connecting the right wires … I’m hoping it’s standard so I don’t have to go thru that 😂
Edit: does crutchfield have a guide for each specific stereo
Cruthefield sends a guide with each stereo, for each vehicle.
I have no reason to believe that the wire colors are universal across different makes and models of cars and stereos.
@@208Tyler thanks man definitely gonna order from them then also the install video is gonna be super helpful once I get to that point !
@@ggg_2414 Awesome! good luck
Did you have to hardwire into the parking brake? Crutchfield is telling me to do so but you just did the same as everyone else with setup
No.
I’m not aware of anything having to do with the parking brake, and I’m guessing “wiring into it” (I’m skeptical that that’s a thing on these vehicles) would be to enable some kind of safety feature that prevents stereo use/adjustment while the vehicle is moving
How many pins on each harness I need for 2000 Toyota tundra I see 12-20 pins 10-12 and 12-20 pins which one I need
Idk, i would just follow crutchfield
So the lights to light up the controls for my A/C and heater no longer light up. And I’ve checked the fuse to ensure it’s not blown. It’s not. I tried to look on your video to see if there were bulbs back there but I couldn’t remember seeing any. Do you remember if there were any bulbs? And if there were, you know which kind of bulbs I need to get to replace them?
While there are definitely bulbs back there somewhere, I’m not sure how exactly to get to them or what you need to replace them.

Hey was the wiring harness you got from Crtuchfield the Metra-70-1761?
Searching through my email to find my order, it looks like that’s the right part number
¿De cuántas pulgadas es el estéreo?
I’ve done all this with three different radios so far and none have worked. I’m being very careful with the wiring connections but I still haven’t had one be able to get power and turn on. I went through 3 radios because I thought that maybe I wasn’t getting enough power to them because I bypassed the amp ? And maybe these radios in particular don’t have built in amps ? Would it say if that were the case? Idk I’m just guessing
I always double check my crimped connections just because I feel like they’re a vulnerable connection that’s easy to screw up. But I followed the crutchfield instructions down to every step on this install and have done the same on 2-3 other installs with no issues. The fault is probably in your wiring or something’s been damaged on the truck imo
Did you use a dash kit to get a perfect fit in it?
I did not use or need a dash kit
Hey what harness did you use?
I used the crutch field supplied harness.
The part number is probably in the comments or description.
I’m not sure about how compatible the harness is between different stereos
Thank you for sharing. Why did you bypass the factory amp?
Those were the crutch field instructions. Beyond that I’m not sure why.
because the factory amp is shit and completely useless
How does it sound?
Good (to me)
Were you able to retain steering wheel controls?
I don’t have any steering wheel controls. For those who do, I’m not sure.
After I stalling, we get error code 3.
We cant get our power antenna to work after we installed the same radio. Any advice. Thanks
There should be an antenna plug from the stock stereo that gets unplugged and then plugged into the new head unit. Beyond that, I’m not sure what your problem would
Be
I have the pair of wire plugs like you showed but isn't there 3? I can't find the other clip. Do I need it?
Everything shown in this video is what I did.
Aren’t there 3… what? Total wire harnesses?
@@208Tyler I looked at other videos and figured it out. There's only two separate clips attached to a bunch of wires one is like a double so it looks like 3 but it's only two. Thnx for your time
Did you buy any double din kit dash for your radio ?
Nope. Just used the stereo, no dash kit
Do you have the link for the Crutchfield bypass wires?
This is the part, according to Crutchfield: amzn.to/3ZAECDT
I also added it to the video description for future reference! thanks
@208Tyler thank you I appreciate.
Where could I find the crutch Field wiring diagram ?
If you purchase the part, they send it to you as part of an email. Otherwise, I’m not sure
So do I have to bypass the factory amplifier like you did?
If you’re installing what I’m installing, yes. I can’t speak for all stereo setups
@@208Tyler alrighty then, appreciate it.
why do you bypass the factory amp?
As I understand it, that’s how the kit/stereos are designed. The wiring harness is designed to hook up to the factory pre-amp harness
Did you ever install the spare tire carrier?
I’ve never planned to install a spare tire carrier…
