    This probably won't win any painting contest but considering the aspect of cost/time x skills needed x outcome - this absolutely steals my heart and makes me wonder that even such a terrible, completely unskilled and talentless person like me should pick up a brush and try it out. Will probably pick up ArmyPainter Speedpaints instead of GW's Citadel Contrast though, but the idea remains the same.

    Discovering your method has leveled up my painting like crazy. I've always loved contrast/speed paints, but layering up over them brings the whole model to the next level without adding a whole lot more time.

    I find I need to thin Dark Angels green with Contrast Medium otherwise it just swallows up the zenithal highlights without mercy. The whole coat looked like I just went over it with Caliban Green base paint with no significant highs or lows to be found from the contrast.

      What ratio do you mix it in?

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can understand that. And I’m worried it will need that extra step on modles with no robes to steel the attention away.

      @Conner Hutchins sorry for the necroping but the real best way to do dark angels armor with that paint is to zenethal, then do a coat of warp lightning or karandaras green and then finally go in with 1:1 medium+DA Green. It adds way more vibrancy

    Just starting my Fallen. Out of ALL the tutorials, I like this one the most - mix of speed and quality. I may to a Grimdark Villainy Ink wash instead of the Sepia wash. I will experiment.

    Lovely Job Andy. If the double pistol thing really bothers you I've found that it's fairly easy to clip off the Grip and Trigger guard from the holster and leave it empty.

    Dark angels are my marine army that I've come back time and again. And I've always struggled to find a dark green that I really like, I've done the gw method (don't like it at all) and I've gone for more attempt at natural osl highlighting which works....kinda. but this is Def the favourite one I've seen so far. I'll be giving this a try when I get more models for the dark angels.

    Dark Angels! My favourite chapter! The secretive plasma spammers are awesome! And you will never get bored of their scheme, because they got three! The robes are a great little thing to have dotted in their, creates a very unique aesthetic.
    Since you are looking for suggestions: I suggest taking a look at Craftworld Iybraesil. They got a really vibrant teal-y blue scheme that looks awesome. They also love themselves some Howling Banshees.

    that's a really nice clean dark green with enough variation but still staying dark green :)
    something I like doing to most of my minis, especially space marines, is giving them what i call the "superman" treatment. he and many other superheroes got some for of belt or underwear on their hero suit that adds visual interest and break up the suit a bit. so i always paint the belt and belt buckle a different color to help break up the power armor, nothing fancy just some type of brown (light or dark doesn't matter) or a black-ish color with a metallic belt buckle. i find it helps a lot for me with visual interest :)

    Thank you so much for making this video. I am also glad to hear that I wasn't the only one asking for your take on Dark Angels. For a future video suggestion I think it would be great to see how your method of contrast and layering would work for something with heavy texture and definition like fur. A Skaven model could be interesting with all the different fur color options that they have. Thank you for all that you do and the inspiration that watching your videos brings to making people want to put paint to plastic.

    Great video, would love your advice on something. I have the 2017 Dark Imperium set, back then I wasn't aware of contrast paints. I finished a couple of Dark Angels at the time then abandoned it but I'd like to finish them with contrasts (I was never great at "traditional" painting!) My problem is they've all already had a spray of Caliban green (probably a little heavier than it should have been) and then a wash coat of something, can't remember exactly what, either a black or a dark green, but it was applied way too thickly and I've got some rather shiny parts in the recesses. So. Reality is they're not getting painted unless I go to contrasts. Do you think I should spray them all black and then a light layer grey seer to start again and accept the risk of losing detail, or, do you think just the grey seer on top of what I've got (they're already very dark!) Or something else? Thank you!!

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      So test on one with the black and then grey seer and see where you are after that. You mite need to strip them.

  • @exodus2oo

    • @MediocreHobbies

      I did indeed. Chaos black all over and then a heavy zenithal of grey seer all with rattle cans. No airbrush.

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      It might sound weird but if you watch my video on highlighting skin, it might help you. Basically you're making the cloth/skin/armour brightest(highlighting with the brightest colour paint) where the sun would hit it most. Pick a basic direction where the "light" is coming from, and then make anything facing that light brighter than anywhere where the light can't see. I hope this makes sense but please ask again if I confused you even more! Here's the skin video to show you how highlighting stages work. th-cam.com/video/7B0drv7Ufm4/w-d-xo.html

    do you need to layer over the contrast as the total cost of paints is so much from GW

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      For this result you do, but I’ve done plenty of models without layering after contrast, just depends on the scheme, the off white colour for example in this scheme needs a layer paint to brighten it up but there’s suitable contrast colours you can just leave alone for armour etc!

    • @duelfreak4359
      @duelfreak4359 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MediocreHobbies thanks i feel the dark angels green would look 10x better as it does in your video with a layer over it - just starting this army so might aswell get all the paints now and be done with it aha - do you find you use alot of the contrast paint per model ? Everything is else great

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว
