    I think the way you check the sharpness is incorrect:
    - no tripod,
    - no use of resolution chart
    - no manual focusing

      Gregori O Yes, that was my first thought but then i took a 7h walk and a warm bath, and i come up with a politically good word that i found in a french-english dictionary: incorrecte --> incorrect

      I am so sorry that you were so upset here. I am ignorant when it comes to lens tests and I am simply doing my job trying to fill a quota of two videos a week for this channel. Its a hard grind and this video took a long time as it is to make. I hope you will stick around as I will be ridiculously particular next time I do a review.

      +Jérôme Chatillon: A tripod should be used. A resolution chart, not necessarily. And NOT manual focusing. This is more of a test on how these lenses will perform in "real world" situations. A tripod evens things out, as you may shake more or less in different situations. However, we also want to see "real world" shooting situations (not just charts, which also don't really show any bokeh), and they should NOT be manually focused because one lens might have excellent resolution if it hits, but it misses 80% of the time and takes a long time to focus when it hits, as opposed to another lens that hits 80% of the time and takes a short time to focus. This is not a DXO lens test. This is supposed to show what people will see if they actually use these lenses.

    i'd love to see reviews on different lenses with not only "technical tests" (ie. Sharpness, Vignetting, Distortion, Flare, Bokeh etc), but also includes their rendering outcome, how they render “3D reality” into "flat images“. The color, the dynamic range, the blow out, the shadows etc. Thanks for your reviews btw, keep up good work.

    Love my Sigma 24-105mm Art on my Sony A7R2 and A7R3. This lens stays on my camera more than any other. AF is great with updated firmware on my MC-11 adapter. Yes you should be on a tripod for these tests, and using a resolution chart to be exact. Too many variables when you handhold. Also this Sony is not a G-Master lens and not really meant to compete at that level. The Sigma Art series is meant to compete with G-master lenses. I opt for this Sigma's better resolution and sharpness over this Sony.
    Hey I have Sony G-Master 70-200mm f2.8 and it is tops. If you are going for the best Sony glass , buy G-master lenses, less chromatic aberration and barrel distortion has been shown, as well better sharpness corner to corner. Sigma Art lenses have won many tests against native glass. Better for my budget too. Sigma Art lenses are built really solid and have stood up to my professional use, trekking around the world. In addition to this Art 24-105, I also have Sigma Art 20mm f1.4, and Sigma Art 85mm f1.4 lenses and Sigma Contemporary 150-600mm f5-6.3. Love them all and are thrilled with the image quality and build quality. Sigma quality and value have allowed me to have more gear without sacrificing image quality..
    Also have the Sony FE 28mm f2, sharp ,compact and affordable, a real best buy. And I also have a specialty lens that neither Sigma or Sony have, a Canon 17mm f4. Tilt-Shift lens that is great for architecture and landscape and special "minature" look art photography. The Canon works great with the Sigma MC-11 adapter on my Sony cameras. Will I buy any native Sony lenses in the future, sure if I feel the need for something I cant already cover, maybe a G-Master macro.
    Adapted Sigma and Canon glass has allowed more people to be able to afford and ease into the switch to Sony cameras. You can't ignore the value of this. The Sony folks I have talked to recognize and appreciate this.
    Cheers for your effort !

      Wow Gerald...thank you for your time to add this really valuable comment here. I really appreciate it!
      Personally, I really liked using the 24-105 from Sony simply for the AF performance and the size. It is seriously significantly lighter than the rest and that is something that I find value in..
      I own the 18-35 from sigma and have owned the 50mm 1.4 in the past as well and love them...but my back always hurts when I use their lenses. The image is so freaking sharp...but the weight of them tends to be very high compared to the native options.
      Im thinking of picking up the 24-35 f2 for my 1DC as a walk around lens for this channel. Have heard great reviews on it and the range is the only range I need for talking head videos.
      I will always use a tripod and a chart next time I do a lens test. I am primarily a video shooter so all this photography stuff is new to me and I apologize for my ignorance.

      Only the Word, I used my Sigma Art 24-105 (Canon EF mount) with the great MC-11 adapter on my A7R2 for almost a full year in all conditions and for a myriad of subjects. The AF speed was fine and always seemed fast enough. Yes the lens/adapter combo is heavy, but is better balanced if you have the battery grip on the A7R2 like I had. This combo will work fine.
      If you already have the Sigma 24-105mm just keep it and use it. Yes right now the A7R2 are a real bargain , new and used. I upgraded to the A7R3 and yes it focuses faster than the A7R2 but I loved my A7R2 and it was the best when it was the top of the Sony line. If you can afford the A7R3 you may like its improved ergonomics and controls and its faster focusing. But don't get me wrong , you can make fabulous images with the A7R2. I did. Cheers

    • @6gwilliams
      @6gwilliams 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AngelDigitalis, All MC-11 compatible Sigma Art lenses will work fine on your A7R3 with full AF-C and Eye-AF, no problem. If you can afford the native Sony lenses they are usually a little lighter , but more expensive than the comparable great Sigma Art lenses which are very solid build, yet more affordable. I have Sigma Art lenses (EF mount for use with the super MC-11 adapter), and I also have Sony native lenses. I love them all and image quality is pretty equal. I understand the natural tendency to shy away from non-native lenses, but Sigma Art and Contemporary series lenses are wonderful with my Sony A7R3 and A6500. Do some research on lenses you might be interested in. I am here to help you in any way if you need some advice about particular lenses, Sony or Sigma. I have been shooting with both since I switched to Sony in January 2017.

    Hi Dave, even though the 3 lenses are close, your comments about sticking with the native lens and that the Sony was better at focusing and also better at filming stability sold me on just looking to get the Sony G 24-105 lens. I mainly take photos however would want a 24-105 lens that can also excel at video.

    Thanks for the video 🙏

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey mate! Great vid, its one of the best comparsion out here, but I think the the adaptor is might just slowing down those lenses. The Sigma has a native sony mount lens, I guess it’d preform better in the aspect of focusing speed... What do you think? :) Im still hesitating between the sony and the sigma, but honestly I’d prefer the sigma because the color accurancy as the color abberation and casts are way more difficult to remove in post, while the sigma is just softer in the corners( and maybe slower a bit)

    I've been looking for a lens for my Sony a99ii and the Sigma seems to be more in line with what I can afford. None of my lenses are Sony. My only disappointment in doing research is that nearly everything is testing an e-mount lens or using an e-body. I only have a-mount cameras (also have an a77). What has been anyone's experience with a Sigma 24-105 Art on an a-mount body? B&H has this lens on sale and I think I might pull the trigger.

      24-105 Art is the best and last A-Mount FF lens from the looks of it no Art 24-70 for A-mount.... as a Minolta shooter its kinda sad to see an F4 lens being the last modern pro glass for A-Mount

    Important question!!!
    On the market there are 2 similar lenses but with a big price difference.
    The sony 18-105 f.4 OSS G (cheaper) and the sony 24-105 f.4 OSS G (more expensive).
    Are there differences in sharpness that justify buying the 24-105 over the 18-105?
    Because if it is the same, the 18-105 makes more sense for all in one!
    Im asking because there aren't direct comparisons of those two lenses, only one or the other!!!

    • @jw0001
      @jw0001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 18-105 is a crop lens. You won’t get the full frame sensor resolution with it.

    Unfair test on video - if you're going to accept there is an adapter on, you need to do what you can do bring them together - so turn off the in body stablisation. This is a lens test, not a camera+lens test.

      Its because overall, on a Sony body, I really believe its the best option, even if its not the "best" of the bunch. It feels the nicest on the camera, the autofocus works best, and its much lighter. Its not all about the IQ...its a more practical lens for the small body size of the a7 line IMO

    • @Seanvandeusen
      @Seanvandeusen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly.. most of sony users stick to sigma and even the cheaply built Rokinon. Sony figured out how to make a hell of camera! But when it comes to lenses in the past 6 years they just aren't worth the price. There's many videos showing this with extreme tests. They aren't sharp, lots of fringing and contrasty. Their high-end lenses perform like Canon lowend lenses and their cheaper lenses are pure garbage. So if anything I think he went easy on Sony.

I would not recommend this lens for group shots ... where as the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 is the beast at f2.8 the sharpness is at Centre n not at borders but @ f4 onwards the sharpness is great all over the frame ... n this Tamron 24-70 g2 is recommend for all purpose either indoor n out door as well ... just try this lens ....its worth

    I bought the Sony 4/24-105 but I sent it back. It was very good in the middle and had excellent color rendition and AF. But I didn't like the performance in the corners. Too soft for me. I think I will be better off with the Tamron 2.8/28-75, or the Canon 2.8/24-70 with MC-11. Sonys 2.8/24-70 is too pricey to even be considered.

      Sony lens is really really nice. If you're on a sony body its the only choice in my opinion. Fabulous glass.

    The Canon 24-105 version II has the better IS off any other 24-105 I used, better than sony, better than canon´s version I and RF and of course better than sigma

    Sorry to say but this is a bad comparison!
    The image you compare are not the same angle.
    Keep in mind that Sigma MC11 works only with Sigma lenses.
    You should have the Metabone 5 on the Canon lens.
    You are right when you say that native lens are better.
    Good luck for the next review, hope it will be better.

    There is no point to compare native autofocus and adapter autofocus...

    Hand held at 1/60th, with your rather hyper-active body language, and then pixel peeping? Analyzing critical sharpness at the pixel level just doesn`t work this way.

      This was my first lens review. Never done one before and we’re not sure if we will in the future. Too many specifics that I’m not interested in testing. Most picky comments than any other video we’ve made. Not worth it

    • @dopamining7621
      @dopamining7621 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You sound resentful of the `picky comments` you`ve received, which is illogical because you`re claiming to evaluate an extremely picky lens quality: sharpness. Sharpness can by quantified using resolution charts and standardized metrics. You have waded in to this inherently picky process with your highly random test and lack of rigor. If you want to share your subjective thoughts on rendering, color cast, ergonomics, build quality, then go ahead. But don`t slag your audience as overly picky and `not worth it` just because you don`t understand what you`re doing.

    My real issue with this is your sound effects. they're way loud. You've made me jump multiple times trying to listen to you talk and then unexpected loud punching sounds happen. I would just not use sound effects.

    sorry, but this review doesn‘t make sense except the statement that you better buy native lenses.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting test but not very methodical so the results are not very accurate or repeatable, suffice to say the native lens performs better on this camera.

    What a load of rubbish. The sony lens does not cover the same area as the other 2 lenses. A terrible demo.
