This is the best, and most detailed video I’ve seen yet about the 24-105 f/4 lens (and I’ve watched A LOT 😅) . It’s so refreshing to see someone actually show the shutter speed, aperture and ISO whilst comparing these against the same shot; I’ve learned from your video that by slowing the shutter speed one stop every time I increase the aperture, I’ll get the balance right and can even get crispier photos with f5.6 or above as long as I slow my shutter speed accordingly. Sorry for rambling but you’ve no idea how relieved I am to have found a video that explains the above in a way I understand. Every other TH-camr has confused me when trying to explain this. I love the longer format too as if makes a refreshing change from other peoples 8 minute ‘tutorials’ 🙄 honestly before I watched this I was considering returning my 24-105 G and saving a bit longer to get a 24-70 GM! Now I’ll 100% save my money and enjoy my lens 👌🏼

I bought this 24-105 F4 G after deliberating for some time between this and Tamron 28-75 F2.8. Bought it used in mint condition at similar price to the Tamron. Bokeh is "similar" between both, 105mm F4 and 75mm F2.8 due to compression factor, F2.8 is 1 stop brighter than F4 BUT the OSS in Sony helped in recovering back some so I did shoot below the shutter speed = focal length rule and they're great too. Then there are 24 vs 28mm and 75 vs 105mm which sealed the deal for me. Some reviews mentioned the Tamron is just a tad sharper and if that's right I didn't mind too because I have better range and the 24-105 is still a very sharp lens, I'm willing to forego that little sharpness for the range and versatility. This is one lens I have never regretted buying as majority of the time I knew I was shooting at F4, F8 or F11. I have F2.8 lens too but for night photography, it will be F1.8 or wider for me.
That is how I feel about this lens also. I'll take the f/4, OSS, and more range, because I also have a few fast primes if needed for lower light ;) The f/2.8 zooms are great for sure, but you can't have it all without some kind of sacrifice... Thank you for sharing your experience Stuart!!
I just got the A7r IV and this lens from a very reputable dealer in Stockholm Sweden. After I deduct VAT and the 20% rebate they had in store on used merch, I got the body (140.000 exp, so its been around) for $1100 and the 24-105 for $540. Im pretty happy with that!
Great focal range examples given, and some awesome local food reviews to boot. I'm now both hungry, and planning on getting this lens once I pick up the camera I'm currently researching. Nice video!

Bonus points for the cows. Excellent review and still relevant. I expect Sony to give us an updated version soon with an aperture ring, focus lock, M/AF switch but they will likely drop the OSS unfortunately. Maybe not if they value FX6 customers.

Thanks for a really great and thorough lens review. I am using my copy on an AR7IV at home in Albury, Australia and am increasingly pleased with it. Your review was very helpful and informative.
My Full Written Review of the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens with all the sample photos is now up for those interested here: www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-fe-24-105mm-f-4-g-oss-lens-review-lab-and-real-world/
I think Sony released that lens precisely because their cameras can compensate for the lens issues in body, but I suppose that only affects JPEG‘s. One thing I haven’t tested out yet or heard about is, I understand that the playback on the a9 is a jpeg even if you shoot raw. Are lens corrections applied to that JPEG? I’m sure I can find the answer, I haven’t had time to dig around yet.
It's hard to beat Joe! Back in the day when I was doing pro work I needed something versatile, and I used the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS Lens 50% of the time I would say. The other 50% was made up of the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Lens, and the 17-40mm f/4 L Lens... The versatility of 24-105mm of a full frame camera is huge! f/4 is fast enough for almost anything when combined with todays high iso ability. The optics on this lens are also fantastic as you saw in this review... Thanks for the comments and all the best, Jay
Thank you very much, I choose between the small 20-70mm and the big, heavy, but cheaper 24-105mm. My question is 20-70 in Cropmode in R III, 105 mm will approximately correspond to the quality of the picture and bokeh as 24-105?
Quick question?... hope you get this. Been going crazy trying to decide between Sony 24 to 105 f4 or the sigma 24-70 2.8 i shoot mostly video and i will use it on a sony A7S III. I like having a longer zoom and more portable lens so i think the sony 24-105 will be better right?
Hello, I would rather have the FE 24-105mm F/4 G OSS lens because it has optical stabilization and more reach. However the F/4 aperture is slower which means in lower light situations it will require a higher ISO value than a f/2.8 lens for example.
Great review. I should buy my next lens for travel and landscape photography. I'm undecidet between the Sony 24-105 f4 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 . I have the Tamron 17-28 f2,8 and is an amazing lens for the price. What's lens should I buy ?
Thank you and the FE 24-105mm is great if you just want one lens to carry around. If you don't mind the weight and your brining the 17-28mm f/2.8 around also, you miles well go for the 28-75mm for the faster aperture. It's a hard decision ;)
@@Jason_Hermann Thx. Yes i will bring the the 17-28 with me. I read a lot of reviews about the Sony24-1045 and the excellent shartpness corner to corner.
Hi, thanks. Just bought it last week for 700€ minus 100€ cashback ! It’s great on my a7R4 and my a7c. Pictures are really ok and more if you use in good circumstances
At 9:07 you have the max magnification listed as 0.13x, but B&H has it listed as 0.31x. Is this just a typo? Because you guys share the same MFD of 1.25' / 38 cm.
Why do I always feel hungry after viewing many of your vids? I am undecided about sigma 24-70 Vs the Sony 24-105. Just re-starting out with photography and switching from Cannon to the Sony A7IV. Knew if I checked out some of your previous vids you would have created content that I just had to watch.
haha, I have an issue with eating killer food and taking photos of it :) I would go with the 24-105mm personally, because it has more range and can act more as a do everything lens. However it is heavy and pretty large also, but so is the 24-70mm f/2.8.... Both lenses are great options!
Thanks for the response. Shortly after viewing your vid and replying, I made a decision and purchased the sigma lens. Should arrive by Friday. I watched several other reviews and comparisons and pretty much all agreed either would be a good option if weight and bulk wasn’t a concern. So for now I am mounting the Sigma lens. And if I am good perhaps I can save up and get the Sony 70 - 200 first and much less expensive edition.
It's very similar in sharpness and overall optical quality I would say. The GM lens is faster though at f/2.8, but does not have a much range or optical stabilization.
Great to see LOTS of sample pictures. Really shows the potential of the lens. I'm currently selling my Sony APS-C system to jump to full frame. Propably getting an A7 III but I'm having a hard time picking my first (and for a time only) lens. The 24-105 is tempting but there is also the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and Tamron 28-75 and also 28-200.
Thanks Miro, and yes there are so many great options these days!! A very hard decisions for sure, but I really think you would enjoy the image quality and all-in-one range of this lens. The Sigma and Tamron zooms are fantastic options as well, but none of them offer what this lens does as a package. That Tamron 28-200mm (bhpho.to/3ffewPk) would be a very tempting option for the overall increased range, but the aperture is variable although a faster f/2.8 at 28mm, has NO optical stabilization, but the lens is much more affordable at ~$750 US... Reviews so far also say that lens is excellent, although I have not seen a head to head lab test with the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens yet... I need to get that lens for review asap ;)
@@Jason_Hermann I had the 18-135 for my a6400 and really enjoyed the reach. However I sometimes wished it was a bit wider. 28-200 would be roughly equal and it is as fast or faster than the 24-105 up to 100mm. Hope to see your review soon!
Dude I’m from Middletown NY. 10940. Can’t believe I stumbled on you’re video, who would have thought. You’re from the Orange County area. Good job man!!
It's going to be around a 92 Rob. The lens distortion when testing in the Lab was pretty significant and cost it some points for sure. Real world wise the lens is a 95 or so in my book though.
Best lens is crazy subjective. This is an excellent lens for sure, but depending on what you are filming not necessarily. Cinema Lenses are better quality usually, but require manually focusing? You could go for a power zoom lens (bhpho.to/3szjsGT) which is great when you need to zoom in and out really smooth, but those lenses are really expensive and heavy as well. I tend to use more affordable prime lenses. For example I have the FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens (amzn.to/38179cL), FE 34mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/3mmiqg8), and the FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/2UA7Syv). I use the Autofocus when needed, but can switch to manual focus as well when I want a more strict focus plane...
Great review, I just bought a Sony ar7 ii used but in excellent condition along with a Sony 20mm 1.8, but thinking of returning the 20mm as I really like the versatility of this lens, the ar7 ii being 42mp, how would it perform with the 24-105? I know it’s a 7 year old camera, but would it be close to the ar7 iii? Even the 4?
The A7R II is an awesome camera make no mistake! This lens will perform awesome on it as well. What you're missing from the newer cameras are autofocus performance when it comes to tracking moving subjects in particular. Also some video features and slightly better camera bodies for example... Image Quality overall is very similar, just different max resolution with latest A7R IV
@@vitorazinheira2195 I’ve been seeing that a lot. If you shoot outside frequently or in dusty areas, I wouldn’t. Love Sigma, but can’t get that much dust in a lens that fast.
I love this lens. My only gripe is that it's too heavy for my tastes as I tend to go out on multi-hour (if not all day) shoots. I found slight loss in clarity in the corners in the extreme lengths and apertures. Other than that, it's almost a perfect lens. I love using my 40" Vizio smartTV as a monitor. Using a 15" computer monitor does not do the lens and Sony FF camera any justice.
Thanks for sharing and great points! No lens can do everything great, but this lens is one of the best all-in-one options out there in my opinion! It is a bit heavy, but the full frame range and quality is fantastic! If you want even better optical quality, then consider investing in a really good prime lens... All the best, Jay
Hi again Jay. Although expensive I will probably get this lens to replace my MISTAKE of getting the APS-C 18-105 for my a7iii. Another consideration is Tamron 17-28, 2.8 (which only covers wide-angle). Looking for an all-around lens but for video on Gimbel and macro too. Can OSS be used in combination with IBIS for even more stability?
Yes IBIS and OSS will work together and this is the best all around lens available today for Sony full frame I would say. Another great "all in one" lens option is the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD Lens which I recently reviewed here: th-cam.com/video/YpvUqzN4DR4/w-d-xo.html
The IQ is very similar in sharpness, color, and clarity for regular shots. However when the faster f/1.8 aperture of the 35mm and 85mm come into play things get different. The depth of field play is and low light advantage of the faster aperture makes a pretty big difference. I also reviewed the 35mm (th-cam.com/video/LYNtNpDDJwg/w-d-xo.html) and 85mm (www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-fe-85mm-f-1-8-lens-review/) lenses if you want to see for yourself ;)
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for your response! I actually have the 35 and 85 and love them and that 1.8! Wondering if I will have less clarity/IQ with 24-105 especially for when I need to crop into a photo :) Is the IQ similar enough for that?
Great video, thanks!!! Now that we are in 2024, what would you recommend for my A7 IV between Sony 24-105, Sigma 28-70 and Tamron 24-75 to mainly take videos and wedding photos?
Out of those 3 I would prolly go with the Tamron 28-75mm geni.us/gSQn965 , because it has the faster f/2.8 aperture and is much more affordable plus a bit lighter weight for hours of use at a wedding. 75mm is good enough for most stuff at a wedding I would say as well.
Great review and precisely what I was looking for ! Thank you. I was (and still am) debating between this lens and the Tamron 28-75 and the Sigma 24-70 Art. The non-Sony lenses come with f2.8 but only goes to 70/75mm. The Tamron is lighter/smaller/cheaper (compared to the Sony 24-105) and the Sigma goes to 24mm, and being an "Art" series lens, has professional build and quality. Still debating !
I am struggling so much, I got the 24-70 f/2.8 GM for the same price as the 24-105G OSS so now I have both. But I need to pick one to sell, what would be your advice?
If I could only have one I would keep the 24-105mm for the incredible versatility. That is me though and I also have a few fast aperture prime lenses if needed...
Your great review shows how good this lens is, thanks! So my decision is final now. Next step is buying the A7iii or wait for the IV. At the moment there are great deals with the A7iii (The Netherlands)
@@bladamirputin5999 I really don't know exactly to be honest. Sony lenses with OSS give 5-axis stabilization on a camera body with IBIS and 3-axis on a body without IBIS. Sony lenses without OSS give 3-axis stabilization on a body with IBIS. The A7S III offers 5.5-stops so I gather that would still be the number, but you would get 5-axis with that lens as apposed to 3-axis using a non stabilized prime for example.
This is my fave lens! I had no intention of buying a relatively heavy, full-frame lens for my A6300, but I rented it and fell in love when I saw the sharpness of the images. It's a bargain at $1200!
Good video, i really enjoyed it! :) I have this lens for a few months now, using it with A7II, but its fantastic. Bought it for exactly $1200 USD total, and came with a free year of warranty, so 1+1, i think its a pretty good deal. Could be cheaper tho :D Used lenses are around 920-950, totally acceptable imo.
Dude, don't worry about "at the end of the day" comment I made on your other video. It was a joke. You make great content. Keep it up. Subscribed! Love the lens, but I lost all interest as soon as I learned the weight. I moved to Sony from Nikon mainly because I wanted small lenses and a full frame sensor. The lens is currently selling at B&H for a little over $800 on EDU + Black Friday discount. I am tempted, but weight is killing it for me.
No worries Talha ;) Every time I drop a weird saying that I can't help control a new one just pops up! It's incredible how that works with my brain anyway, lol As far as the lens weight goes, I hear ya. However it is a 24-105mm range and has optical stabilization. A full frame sensor requires a lot of glass in the lenses, so it's hard to get away from the weight unfortunately. The lenses in general tend to be lighter though, but not always like in this case. Some of the f/1.8 primes are not to heavy for example like the 35mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 lenses...
@@Jason_Hermann Yeah. I am sticking with 1.8 and 2.8 primes. Weight trumps all for me. My only fast lens is CV 50/1.2 Nokton SE and it is still less than a pound.
I’m not sure if I’m watching a lens review or the food channel 😆. But seriously, I enjoyed your review, dude. Stellar job!

I’m sure I can find the answer, I haven’t had time to dig around yet.
I honestly do not know Nick and excellent question! That is a jpeg preview image of the raw file, so I don't think so....
Hay Jay, I think this is the one. Price and versatility I don't think it can get any better than thus. Thank you.
@@Jason_Hermann got ya. The sony A7SIII is good with low light already cause of the high iso capabilities so i think i agree about getting the sony.
Hi Sir, would you recommend this lens for video work?
Hi, thanks. Just bought it last week for 700€ minus 100€ cashback ! It’s great on my a7R4 and my a7c. Pictures are really ok and more if you use in good circumstances
Thanks for sharing :)
Very good review Jay.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!!
At 9:07 you have the max magnification listed as 0.13x, but B&H has it listed as 0.31x. Is this just a typo? Because you guys share the same MFD of 1.25' / 38 cm.
Sorry, it's a typo on my part. It is .31X Magnification
@@swiczdad4716 You made a great choice and you will love it I'm sure 👍
How does the 24-105 G compare to the 24-70 GM?
It's very similar in sharpness and overall optical quality I would say. The GM lens is faster though at f/2.8, but does not have a much range or optical stabilization.
This video convinced me of two things. To buy this lens...and to go to Eddie's. And you have to trust anyone who loves dogs. Great stuff.
Thank you Randy :)
Yeah, my thoughts exactly, but I live overseas...Damn! I love cats, and beer too! Jay seems to have good taste!
Very cool, I grew up in Washingtonville, but now I live just up 17 from you in the Rock Hill area ;) I'm glad you liked the video!! Jay
Great job!👍👊
Thanks 👍
Thank again, Jay. Where would you grade this one on your website 80-100% scale ?
It's going to be around a 92 Rob. The lens distortion when testing in the Lab was pretty significant and cost it some points for sure. Real world wise the lens is a 95 or so in my book though.
exceleeenteee y más con la comida latina!!! jejej buena combinación!
😋
is this the best lens for the fx6, or which one is the best lens for the fx6? these types of lenses or cinema lenses?....
Sony 24-105 f4 best or sigma 24-70 2.8 fir wedding photography and vediography ? Which one to buy
Tuff call, but the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens would be better for lower light work so I would go with that.
Deciding between this and the sigma 24-70 f2.8!
Tuff call Adrian.... Faster aperture or slower aperture with more range and optical stabilization??? That is the question...
Sigma 24-70 2.8 reviews shows a lot of dust specks inside the elements.
@@vitorazinheira2195 I’ve been seeing that a lot. If you shoot outside frequently or in dusty areas, I wouldn’t. Love Sigma, but can’t get that much dust in a lens that fast.
How would the pictures look with this lens on and APS-C A6400 camera?
Great, just a 36-157.5mm equivalent focal length range.
@@Jason_Hermann I'm sure that this lens is more than I'll ever need. In fact, if I want lightweight I bought the Sony 28-60mm lens.
Don't buy APSC lenses for a full frame sensor.
Waste of money.
can I use this lens for A7C camera?
Oh yeah, you sure can! It's a full frame E-Mount lens and you can tell by the FE in the model number :)
Great video, how about compare with Tamron 28-75?
Thanks and yeah I need to get those Tamron zooms in for review ;)
Jay SonyAlphaLab Great work, you will get your fist 100k subscriber very soon.
How does the image quality compare to primes like the 35 1.8 or the 85 1.8? Will I notice much difference? Thanks for the video!
@@hazardstorms226 No you won't have less clarity, the FE 24-105mm f/4 G Lens is fantastic quality optics!
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you! :)!
Nice review
I have the lens.
It's great
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
@@Jason_Hermann This is exactly what I had decided to do, the Tamron together with the Sony 90mm to be interspersed. Thanks so much for the advice 🙏🏻
For curiosity, which one is sharper for F4 between sony 16-35 F4 vs 24-105 f4 ?
I would say they are about the same in that regard Michael.
Can you do profile correction of the picture on the a7iii? Meaning the vignetting issues?
Thanks dude. This looks like a solid lens.
You bet!
Glad it was helpful and good luck with your decision ;)
What did you end up going with? I’ve read reviews about the others, but folks keep saying dust accumulates way too fast.
@@MotorsportCreative Accumulated on the Sony lens?
Awesome - very useful - Thank You.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the comments Bjarne :)
What Lens did you film the video with? Particularly in the veginning
I was using my Sony A6400 and Sigma 30mm DC DN f/1.4 lens geni.us/HugPuk
Looks like it make a great travel lens
I think so too and thank you for the comments Chad ;)
Your great review shows how good this lens is, thanks! So my decision is final now. Next step is buying the A7iii or wait for the IV. At the moment there are great deals with the A7iii (The Netherlands)
Good choice!
is it silent?
It's very quiet and near silent although it's not 100% silent...
Very good information 👍
So nice of you to say, thank you :)
Would you pick this one over the cheaper zeiss 24-70 f4?
I would go for this lens personally, but it is a lot heavier than the Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 lens which is also excellent... I hope that helps, Jay
15:00 ... damn, that's some old-school wiring. US really is behind in comm tech
Oh, yeah for sure! We are finally putting in fiber to homes, but it's slow going...
I just ordered this lens and got it for $958 with edu discount and pre blackfriday competition against Amazon prime
Great lens. When Sony will release Sony A7IV?
I'm not sure... Rumors are next year, but nobody "really" knows if you ask me ;)
Jay SonyAlphaLab 😄
How many stop I could get if use this lens on Sony a7s3?
How many stop? Stabilization wise you mean?
Jay SonyAlphaLab exactly..how smooth/stabilise/stop the footage on Sony a7s3 and 24-105?
@@bladamirputin5999 I really don't know exactly to be honest. Sony lenses with OSS give 5-axis stabilization on a camera body with IBIS and 3-axis on a body without IBIS. Sony lenses without OSS give 3-axis stabilization on a body with IBIS. The A7S III offers 5.5-stops so I gather that would still be the number, but you would get 5-axis with that lens as apposed to 3-axis using a non stabilized prime for example.
Jay SonyAlphaLab thank you..very helpful.
Subscribed !! Love the food content !! 😂
Thank you :)
Thank you
Coming the new one , smaller , lighter , sharper
Спасибо большое за ваши обзоры! Всегда с большим интересом смотрю вас! Удачи вам!
Thank you very much :)
This is my fave lens! I had no intention of buying a relatively heavy, full-frame lens for my A6300, but I rented it and fell in love when I saw the sharpness of the images. It's a bargain at $1200!
Can't go wrong Louise, and you are covered if you ever decide to go with a full frame E-mount camera ;)
very nice information :-)
Thank you :)
Own the 24-105mm, think it's weakest length is 28mm, way worse than 24mm or 35mm and above
Ok, thanks for sharing your experience Ronny ;)
You're making me hungry !! 😂
