    Thank you, I also have this lens & love it for it's superb sharpness. I purchased it for a European trip as my walk around lens. For night time shooting, I switched over to a Sigma 50mm1.4.

    Good review. I recently took a family trip and brought the Canon 24-105 f/4 is, sigma 18-35 f/1.8, and tokina 11-16 f/2.8
    On my crop sensor Canon 70d, for a family trip, I found the 18-35 to be a great, albeit heavy, walk-around lens. I took probably 80% off my photos with it. Thanks for sharing your experience and recs.

      NickMach007 Three nice lenses, If I shot mostly with crop I would own the sigma 18-35, such a nice lens.

      Hows your experience with 70D compared to FF? , compare to a not professional but for someone who knows ins and out of a DSLR very well.

    The Sigma is very sharp, also great for flare resistance. I thought it renders quite flat though, perhaps due to all those elements hampering the subtleties of light transmission.

    First off, and just to be clear, are you talking about the 24-105mm Art lens, if not then how would this compare to the Art? Secondly, with a crop sensor and a speedbooster, the aperture would increase to f2.8 and the focal length to 27-119. Still usable for portraits?

  • @UberDurable
    @UberDurable 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice review! I have the Canon 24-105, I noticed that it's not equally sharp across its aperture range, how is the Sigma in that regard? In other words does it have have a sweet spot?

  • @threedollarbridge
    @threedollarbridge 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very informative. Thanks. I'm still on the fence for a travel lens for a 70D. Even though the Sigma has better image quality than the Canon 24-105, the Canon is usually availble new for between $600-$700 street price in the white box. I'm kind of torn between the 24-105, the 18-135 STM, and the 17-55 f2.8. Maybe Santa will help me with the decision.

    Thanks for the heads up Toby. Was interested in this lens but now see there are alternatives on a crop sensor. Looking forwards to the canon 24 pancake, should be a very versatile and lightweight prime lens.

    Hi Toby, Your videos are awesome and very helpful. I am trying to get a Standard Zoom lens for my 5D Mark III. Can you please suggest from the below options. I am looking for a Sharp and walk around lens.
    1. Sigma 24-105 f/4
    2. Tamron 24-70 f/2.8
    3. Canon 24-70 f/2.8 (OLD version-used)
    I am tempted to get the sigma but was thinking of the 2.8 . please suggest.

    Hi, I am new in this channel, I really liked your review. I bought this lens with Canon 6D as for a general use, which it has worked very well. However my company works mostly with stop motion animation. When I animate I mainly use vintage prime lenses. But of course I have try this new lens for animation and for an unpleasant surprised I got blurry picture. I thought that it have to be some automatics is doing it. And now thanks to you my friend, I know that it was because the stabilizer was on! Thanks a lot for that information and for the nice review! I did subscribe to your channel and will be watching more of your videos!

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better, better and better :) Seriously it out performs the Canon in every respect and you can pick up the Sigma USB dock to dial in the focusing, something you can't do with the Canon.

    Hey Toby I got a possibly intruiging question for you: I got the new GoPro 4 camera that shoots 24p at 4k. Thus, there is the option to zoom, reframe, and slide over in post with your image if outputting to 1080p.
    My question is this: when doing a digital zoom like this (with no quality loss) what is the difference between that and a push in with a slider? Is there an optical difference (not talking quality, but optically)
    also, if you slide right in post, is that gona be the same like a slider slide right? Or a push out, the same as a slider push out?
    Thanks for your thoughts. May be a growing and interesting topic with 4k just emerging. Thanks.

    I just got it, couldn't be happier. Bought used, feels like a steal. It is absolutely perfect for travel - not that it is light or not bulky, but it is very compact compared to 70-200 AND 24-75 and much much cheaper. The idea is to only have one lens on all the time, that is compact enough, fits in a small bag, not terrible to lug around. The bonus is that it is not expensive, especially if married to Canon RP, so in the event, god forbid, that you have it stolen, you won't cry as much as you would if you had pretty much any of the good primes or any of the new RF lenses. I mean, $500 would be bad, but $2000 is absolute pain.

      Buying used is a great way to go and I totally agree. Great all around lens for travel even if it isn't the lightest on the market

    I forgot to take off the OS while on tripod and almost 1 second exposure and I had sharp images every time. I have seen other reviews saying the same thing about this lens needing to be taken off of the OS while on tripod. I find it works just fine.

    Toby thank you for what you share good and not so good with various cameras & lenses ... I am photographer for newspapers and sometimes have to grab my camera and go, some landscape some sports and various other events ... and do my own thing too...and have decided to upgrade and hopefully stay with nikon d5300 for a while...and without having to put much money into lenses what is your thought of nikon d5300 using sigma 18 - 250 and sigma 70 - 300mm f4-5.6 dg macro - cost is awesome, can it be used for sports w/ a d5300? Thanks for your help.

    @joeneely301 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought a d750, I tested the nikon 24-70 and was not particularly wow'd by it to want to pay the price tag. I am thinking this lens might be a good general use lens for taking photos of friends and family and will double as a landscape lens. I come from a crop camera using the sigma 17-70 contemporary. I would normally shoot at 17mm and f8 or f10

    I run this on my 70D, it lives on my camera. It is heavy, taken it on 2 vacations. My fav lens. I want Sigma to make more Art lenses. It is a strong lens, my other fell with camera in hand onto a rubber floor, camera was fine, back of the body that connects to the camera mount broke at the first seem, the metal posts snapped (alot of force), it still worked too if you help it together, the rest of the lens was fine, all the electronics and glass had no impacts, $200 to have Sigma replace the body and pvc board, the repair was done in a few days. Very impressed with Sigma service dept.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ruebarb1 I too want more Art lenses, I want an 85 f/1.4. Good to hear you have had positive experiences with Sigma service, that is an important point that is often overlooked when buying gear.

    In a crop sensor is a 38 x 168, not bad and very sharp. Good for portrait. The Sigma 17-50 f2.8 is also a good option. I have a 60D and this lens is very sharp.

    I have this lens on my 70D and took them both on a trip to Europe last month. Considered taking my sigma 30mm 1.4 prime too but I didn't want the extra weight. (Also having some focus issues with that one I think?). I needed the camera to also be my video camera so the OS was very important. Loved the results. Toby have you reviewed the 30mm Art?

    This is in the hope you will notice a question on a 2-year-old video.
    Canon has released the EF 24-105mm f/4 IS Mark II, as you know, and although the Mark I has been compared to the Sigma reviewed in this video, the Canon Mark II has not. Could you briefly say how the Mark II compares to the Sigma? Is it still better value to buy the Sigma even without weatherproofing?
    Thanks!

      Thanks. I'd actually already seen that page, and have now even looked at the links in it. However, I really wanted someone to tell me whether the Canon MK2 was worth $200 more than the Sigma, and so whether it's actually worth waiting for (since it's still only available for pre-order online). It's OK if you don't know. I've found no direct comparison between these two lenses online so far. Thanks.

    Hi,
    The sigma 24-105 f4 is a super sharp lens at Centre ... but the border are soft even at f8/f11... I would not recommend this lens for group shots ... where as the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 is the beast at f2.8 the sharpness is at Centre n not at borders but @ f4 onwards the sharpness is great all over the frame ... n this Tamron 24-70 g2 is recommend for all purpose either indoor n out door as well ... just try this lens ....its worth

    I found it interesting that you didn't take a wide angle lens on your trip. On some of the higher lens like the Tamaron 18-300 mm. My photo buddy says its soft at 300mm so he shoots it at 290 mm. Love to see you do a shoot using the wide angle lens. Like Tokina and compare it to Tamaron , Sigma, Canon and Nikon.

      Don Jones I was shooting on a full frame camera - There are only a few of those big range lenses that work on full frame. I personally am not a fan of the do-it-all lenses, the lenses that cover 18-200 or more. They are certainly convenient but in my opinion you make sacrifices in image quality and convenience. The 18-140 range is about as high as I think someone should go. Have you watched my 10-18 review Canon EF-S 10-18mm Review and Canon 10-18 vs Canon 10-22 vs Tokina 11-16 - Review and Samples Thanks!

    Hey Toby, hope all's well. I'm unhappy with my Tamron 17-50 lens after a couple of dissapointing inside shoots with it.. Anything else that you would consider a contender to replace it? I'm still a Nikon shooter, was thinking of the Nikon 24-120 F4..

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      What was disappointing? Sharpness or low light performance or? I worry about f/4 inside and although 24-120 is convenient I wouldn't say it is significantly sharper. Could you get away with a prime? 35 or 50?

    • @bigjackjones
      @bigjackjones 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slower than a slow thing! Sharpness at the slightly wider apertures is appalling. Really bad.. Anything under 4/5.6 is not sharp at all :( I like the telephoto really - I have the prime 50 but on a crop sensor that isnt really wide enough

  • @VirtualAviationAviator
    @VirtualAviationAviator 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another con, at least for me, is the external telescoping focus arm, versus the internal telescoping focus arm. Still, given that this lens can compete optically with the Canon EF 24-70mm, I can live with the cons. If fact Toby, what is your opinion regarding this lens with the EF 24-70 II?

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank White I love my 24-70 f/2.8 Mark II - so sharp. I give the Canon a little bit of an edge in sharpness but what the Canon really offers is f/2.8 and weather sealing. You know the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 Mark II does the telescoping too- I wish it was internal.

    • @VirtualAviationAviator
      @VirtualAviationAviator 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      CameraRec Toby I agree that the 20-70mm II is a superior lens. Although I own neither, I seem to get that stopped down, the Sigma Art lens is close, and given Sigma's price, this 24-105 is a GREAT lens for the money - at least optically. BTW, I enjoy your TH-cam channel.

    canon 70-200 f4 ( is- non is)
    canon 70-200 F2.8 (is-non is)
    sigma 70-200 F2.8 os
    tamron 70-200 F2.8 vc
    thanks.

    PhotoRec Toby Out of interest how sharp does this lens perform wide open at f4 compared to the Canon 24-105? Do you find you get sharper images at all focal lengths at f4 than the Canon 24-105?

    There is one other highly competitive comparable lens. Tamron's 24-70 f2.8 with IS. It is the only stabilized f2.8 standard zoom iirc and almost as good as Canon's 24-70 f2.8L II; some problems with vignetting/bokeh quality but bitingly sharp.

    Hey Toby. Thanks for the great videos!
    Do you have any experience with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC? I am considering it for video on the GH4 with a Speed Booster and it seems like a good focal length for a crop of around 1.6.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonas Hesselmark That Tamron is a good lens - remember when shooting 4k on the GH4 the crop is actually 2x - Any reason why you don't want to go with the Panny 12-35 f/2.8, maybe price www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/865111-REG/Panasonic_H_HS12035_Lumix_G_X_Vario.html?BI=4773&KBID=5287

    • @JonesHess
      @JonesHess 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CameraRec Toby Yes at 3 times the price that is one reason. I also like the extra focal range of the Tamron and the extra stop of light that the Speed Booster gives me. Which makes it a f/2 across the range in terms of light anyway. I actually believe that the crop factor for 4k is x2.3 but then the Speed Booster is a focal reducer at x0.71. So all in all around x1.63.

    Nice review Toby. Just thought I would add that after much search for a 'main' lens for my 5DSR that I have settled on this lens and couldn't be happier. Resolution across the frame and through the FL range is great + IS = great lens for the 5DSR. I have tested my copy pretty throughly and it is sharper than my very good copy of the Canon 24-70 F2.8 II at every FL = win. Just waiting for Canon to follow Nikon and release a 24-70 F2.8 IS

    Why is it that nobody ever talks about the minimum aperture yes I understand the F4 is good because people look for Boca I want to comes to landscapes and other shots people want a minimum aperture and know what it goes up to any website I go to when I look at a lens they only post the maximum aperture and then you have to go digging for the aperture range. I still cannot find what the aperture range for this lens is

    Hey! Thank you for your reviews. I find them very useful and informative now that I am gonna upgrade my D700 for something with more mp, wifi, video and an extra card slot. After you review comparing D610, D750 and D810 I could confirm that the D750 will be perfect for me. Thanks, I am heading to the shop today and am beyond excited. Wohoo! Have shot with the same camera since 2014! Unfortunatly I am in China and cant use links to benefit you. Wish I could!
    My thoughts on this lens are - this is a great all around lens. I eventually sold my Sigma 24 70, but this will be awesome. 70 wasnt enough I felt.. I wanted it to get me to 85. When shooting portraits, animals or landscape nobody really needs to go under f/4 anyway. A 50 mm 1.4 or 1.8, or even 2.8 and a few macro filters is really all you need, Id say, for artsy shots.
    :)

    You kept comparing and mentioning that the Canon 24-70 f2.8 doesn't have image stabilization yet you never even compared it to the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC which has image stabilization. How would you compared this to the Tamron as a travel zoom?

      funnybeingme I had issues with that Tamron lens that scared me away and have heard of a few similar reports but honestly it seems Tamron got all the early issues worked out and I should give it a try again- Overall the Sigma is sharper but you get that VC and f/2.8

      TalesOfWar I will say that the cost of the Canon 24-105 that I share here is a little misleading, you can pick up white box copies for $700ish and used copies for way less. Of course it still isn't as sharp.

    Enjoyed your review. Have been reading up on this lens for awhile and was glad to finally see yours. I shoot with a Canon 6D with a few different lenses including the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. As much as I enjoy this lens, I am not really happy with with the overall IQ (read softness) as compared to my 70-200mm f/4L IS. I hate to take that off my camera it gives such great results, but it doesn't make for a good AP carry around. I think your review is the clincher for me to "bite the bullet" and make the purchase. I'll probably sell the Canon locally on Craigslist. It isn't worth trying to do a Amazon trade; there offering really low allowances compared to used list. One question (I may have missed this on your review) concerns the distortion at the short end. The Canon is pretty bad at 24mm and I'm wondering if the Sigma is better? Keep up the great reviews; I'll keep reading.

    Sigma 24-105 vs nikon 24-120 f4?

  • @photographerjonathan
    @photographerjonathan 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I considered getting the Sigma 24/105 f4 because I love the longer focal range of 105, and I also love the new Sigma Art lenses, and even there older 85 f1.4 prime, but in the end I went with the Tamron 24/70 f2.8, because it also has VC or IS, it's weather sealed, and it's f2.8, and I guess I decided that f2.8 meant more to me than the extra focal range, and the price was right, almost half the price of the new Canon 24/70 f2.8, and the Canon doesn't have IS, typical of Canon, over pricing and under performing, even though the image quality was great, but Canon lost allot of Sales to the Tamron because of no IS and the price, anyway I have no regrets buying the Tamron, but wish it was smaller and lighter, I went on a trip and took my 5Dlll, my Tamron 24/70 f2.8, Canon 70/200 f2.8 IS ll, and my Sigma 85 f1.4, and a couple of speed lights, and the Tamron was used 95% of the time, I could've left the other glass at home instead of hauling around a billion pounds everywhere I went, whats funny is with all of my camera equipment I had with me, on half of my trip I just used my cell phone for a camera and left the camera bag behind, to much weight, that is why cameras like the Sony A7 series are so popular, and the fuji XT1, or Olympus EM1, no one wants to carry a cement bag around with them everywhere they go, but they want great image quality

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      photographerjonathan Agreed. Except I am not a fan of that Tamron, had a terrible time with it. On my recent travels I didn't miss the wider apertures much but I certainly idn't appreciate carrying such heavy gear and spent whole days using a Sony a5100 and was quite happy. I would have been even happier with just an A7r and one decent lens, like the 24-70.

      Brian Michael Very nice lens but as one of my readers pointed out over on the FB page - for a crop sensor a better comparison is the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 and I agree it offers a similar range on a crop. Sharpness wise though nothing beats that 18-35 f/1.8

      ***** For HD video the shaking is still visible even on wide angles unless you use software stabilization afterwards (which eats some quality anyway). For low light photos I agree, for catching action is definitely better. Still, 3 or 4 usable stops of IS can give you better results than 1 or 2 stops faster glass. Also heavy weight but excellent image quality. Compromises, compromises, like usual with lenses :)

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** And you can always use a monopod or tripod - I really only mean it isn't as good for that silky smooth stabilization

    Hi. Can you please suggest what would be better choice to be used with Nikon D5100 as all in one lens use.
    Tamron 24-70 F2.8 or Sigma 24-105 F4.0.
    reason for choosing both full frame lens is that i intend to upgrade to full frame soon.
    As per my experience Tamron 24-70 F2.8 is sharper and has better color rendering than Sigma 24-70 F2.8 so that is why i need to decide between the lenses mentioned above.

    • @oBCHANo
      @oBCHANo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Hasnain Riaz Comparing the canon versions of those two lenses (since the sigma isn't tested on nikon) dxo mark claims they are equally sharp, but obviously one has more range but is f/4, and the other less range with f/2.8, so it's really just up to you, whether or not you want the f/2.8 or the range. The colour doesn't matter too much once editing.
