Review Of BBb/FF Contrabass Trombone

  • Review of a Chinese made contrabass trombone.
    This particular type of trombone is the largest member of the trombone family. It has the same amount of tubing as a 4 valve BBb tuba.
    A characteristic of these trombones is that they are unstable; trying to hit one note is much harder than on other sized trombones.
    My last few years on cornet/trumpet have not prepared me for taming this instrument.

      If a tuba had a cylindrical bore, then yeah, but since the tuba has a conical bore it has a very different timbre that is far more mellow and darker. The trombone has a brighter more clear but less resonant tone.

      I'm assuming the one you found is a Miraphone. This one is a cheaper (Chinese made as opposed to German made) knockoff made by a company named Snorf. I don't know if they still exist however many of Trent's novelty trombones, such as his piccolo trombone, came from them.

      the trombone in this video was made in a Jinbao factory,
      but because he didn't get it directly from Jinbao, the sellers allowed him to send an image of his choise and it would get laser engraved onto the bell, Trent chose Snorf to be stamped because of a cat of his was named Snorf

    I recall that Roger Bobo, then the tuba player of the L. A. Phill, and also a member of the Phil's brass quintet, had Miraphone create a contra-bass trombone for him. He felt that the tone quality of the instrument would more closely blend with the trumpets and trombones in certain literature. The trombone and the trumpet have a more cylindrical bore that the tuba , which is more conical. That difference causes differences in the tonal quality. I also don't know how the horn figures in these considerations. Bobo is long since gone from L.A., and I don't know what the follow up is on his action, or anything about the instrument. I also don't know if his effort was the first, or if there were other contra-bass trombones before he had one made.

      MardukFilms I mean, the same thing could be said for trombone over euph. It's a different sound than a tuba and can do different things because of the slide. But with that said, it's still pretty useless...

      +WorcestershireySauce Wessex buys chinese instruments, but they make them theirs by bringing the instruments up to their standards, they cover the cost they pay, plus the cost of work they put in, then sell them. Gotta love Wessex
      Wessex is a pretty reputable company, i've read extensive reviews and have talked to some folks who own some. If you have the need and the money, i'd say go for it, unless you're wanting it to play in a symphony or something (even though there are a few players who do just that!)

    • @LowReedExpert1
      @LowReedExpert1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Greg Monks Well they dont change the material. Usually companies that do this will buy the instrument, and rebuild as necessary, maybe a slide pair was out of line, or had a gap where it should connect, maybe the valves aren't straight, maybe the leadpipe or receiver needs to be reamed a tad. Little details are what make the horn, after the building stage

    • @LowReedExpert1
      @LowReedExpert1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Greg Monks I must have gotten lucky, my soprano was pretty free until my old director dropped the slide. Although you really have to appreciate that Jupiter makes just about the only student level Soprano trombone. Most others are just trumpets with slides....

    I got one of the M&M JinBao contra bass trombones and it did not seem to play right. Took it to my tech who is also a trombone/tuba player like myself and and we both thought it had something stuffed down into it. Brushes and water through it proved that wasn't the problem. A year later I got to try a Mirpahone contrabass, and it was much better. The chinese didn't copy it close enough, even though both looked the same and even had the same scroll work on trigger valve cap (suspicious). Maybe they make them for the germans and the germans rework them and those that don't pass get sent back. Cases were virtually identical too... so....? Dunno, but the miraphone just played much better. Or at least of the two horns I played, that's how it worked out. My thoan helicon (1880s) plays better than the jinbao. I sent it back to M&M.

    • @Diesel2530
      @Diesel2530 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait, are you lubricating the whole slide section or just the stockings? You only need to lubricate the stockings because it's the only part of the inner slide that touches the outer slide

    • @TrentHamilton

      KevoTheReaper With the slide-o-mix two bottle combo, the lube in the smaller bottle goes on the stockings and the lube in the bigger bottle gets applied to the top of the slide section - as per the instructions. You'll find that you're wrong about just the stockings touching the outer slide - when in a perfect vertical position, sure, but the moment any downwards pressure gets applied, EG when one is holding the slide, or when the slide is in a horizontal position other parts of the inner slide will make contact with the outer.

      Well on an instrument that massive you need a LOT of air to play, also the slide is heavy. I'd imagine it's good exercise.

      Yes Thats still write but when you breath loud and have additional noise in your breath you have a resistence in your throat

      Look up "Salt Peanuts", and prepare to have a heart attack. Now there's a man who was never taught not to puff his cheeks.

    Trent, love your efforts but man, the notes you just hit on that instrument don't exist in any situation. Don't mean to bash you but I'd like to hear a decent tone coming out of the horn not just blabbing some useless and toneless semi-sounds. I enjoy your reviews but if my buying decision would be based on this demo- I'd never make a move. Peace, Greg.
