DOCTOR SLEEP | Psychic Vampires, The Shining and Addiction at the Overlook Hotel | EXPLAINED

  • Doctor Sleep brings Stephen King's novel to the screen in a way that both honours the author's original version of The Shining and manages to reconcile it with Stanley Kubrick's vision. The result is a film that's a sequel to two stories at once, with its own mythology and a multilayered ending.

    They don't go after children because they're easier. They go after children because children have more "steam." The older you get, the less "steamy" you become. Dan still has a powerful shine, but its nothing compared to when he was a kid. Taking an adult's steam doesn't restore them as well as taking a child's steam.

    This was an incredible movie. It wasn’t scary but it had great acting, storytelling, and pacing. I think the box office failure was due to almost non existent marketing and the name itself. I didn’t even know it was a sequel to the shining until after it left the theater when I decided to watch it.

      I think certain word of mouth didn't help either, people would walk out when the boy gets tortured to death. People can accept a child dying in a horrible way in a movie but actually seeing it is another story. Torture and sex are the two things that will turn off an audience quick. Do you think It chapter one would have done the numbers it did if they had included "that scene"?
      I'm not saying that the director should have taken it out to change his vision though I can imagine conversation were being had by executives about the possibility of cutting out parts off it in the theatrical cut and let him show it in full on the directors cut.
      When Rose is literally keeping his heart pumping just to keep him alive longer to experience more pain, not gonna lie I felt sick afterwards. I've obviously not been in a situation that was this extreme, but I got flashes of some very bad memories I had buried deep in my mindpalace decades ago from when I was a boy. And I frankly thought that the knot and Rose especially got off easy, but that is art imitating life I guess.

    • @dcworld4349
      @dcworld4349 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ryan Claus I guess so but wasn't actually meant as a references, I went to a child psychologist in my early teens for trauma I had experienced growing up. I had such a difficulty talking about it because I had dissociated to such an extent. That gitantic chunks of my memories where locked away. I had even created fake stories about events to protect myself without even knowing the memories were fake.
      So he taught me how to build one, and I've been slowly adding to it since the age of 14. So if the feeling of wanting dissociate happened later, I could separate fact from fiction the fiction my mind would want to create. I know people today think it requires high intellect because it got popularized in shows like Sherlock and The Mentalist. It's really all about practice in learning to memorize things by vizualizing.
      For example if I say 10 of Clubs, you right away get a picture in your mind of that card. Since you have seen it throughout all your life.
      Or simpler the same way you memorize a phone number or birthdays. If someone asks you to explain how you are able to remember the phone numbers or birthdays of all your friends. It's hard to explain you just do because it has become second nature.
      And there are also levels to it, I for instance am not on the level of a Derren Brown. If I spent all my time working on it the way he does while I wouldn't be able to come up with the magic tricks I could probably learn to memorize at least closer to him. But that is not why I use it and I have no interest in doing that.

    I liked Dr Sleep. I felt the narrative was a successful blend of the source novel and Stanley Kubrick’s film. The slow pace wasn’t detrimental. It was a vital part of establishing the world and characters. With out the additional time , crafting a coherent story becomes impossible. Besides , many important plot points were skillfully woven into the movie. I enjoyed the show don’t tell storytelling aspect. It show respect for the audience.

  • @peteuplink
    @peteuplink ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I enjoyed it, but my biggest issue with the movie was Rose. She never really felt like a threat, because Abra pretty much demonstrated at their first meeting that she could inflict some serious hurt on her. This just made Rose feel more like an idiot than a powerful villain, so every time she was going on about how much she was going to destroy Abra, I'm just rolling my eyes and thinking "Just give up, because you're going to get your butt handed to you!" Sure, she got a couple of hits in, mortally wounding Dan and so on, but those hits felt more like lucky sucker punches than actual wounds inflicted due to her being a powerful force. I also felt she was far too easily defeated.

    What I really enjoyed about The Shining is that it showed the harsh reality for a lot of people: that alcoholics, or anyone with any vice, don’t always win the battle against their struggles! And the fact that Danny grew up being so affected by generational trauma that he too developed Jack’s bad habit is the reason why I think Doctor Sleep is an incredible sequel and adaptation of King’s book. The bleak ending of The Shining and saddening first half of this film just makes Danny’s sobriety more satisfying. Doctor Sleep truly is a love letter to both Kubrick and King

The only clue about this was that I drank three beers and had the urge for more, when usually I'll leave with half a beer still, but here I thought because I was enjoying the movie so much the beer was going better. Great pacing the first two acts, acting was top notch and the story telling really captivating. Although for me it kinda peaked at the ambush and then it slowed down significantly. Ending was so-so but so was the ending in the book. Gave it a second watch few weeks ago and thought the same. I'll highly recommend it still - it's a fantastic movie.

    I loved the book, and liked the movie. I just wish they included more from the book even if it had to be changed to fit the new Kubrick esk vision. Some parts of the story felt really rushed, where the book had built suspense better. Plus the Jack/Danny/Abigail bit was missing which I felt took away from the story. But I can understand as they changed the Abigail character

    The movie was so good i watched it twice, almost immediately. I am the kind of person that gives something I like a few years before watching or reading it again. but this movie was so good. definitely one of my best movies of all time.

    Doctor sleep was a good merging of king and Kubrick style. Good mix of whacky and grounded.

    I'll give it a big thumbs up 👍.... I've never seen the original one, but to me even though it's supposed to be a sequel, if you see this one by itself you wouldn't miss the original. (Younger audience).But nobody can deny that Jack Nicholson is a legendary actor 🎉

    This was a interesting second to the shining I completely enjoyed this movie , it filled in all the blanks for me and highlighted some of the passed, even tho I
    IT 2 was a bust for me this second addition of the shining was a win for me

    Love this film, a wonderful meditation upon the consequences of childhood trauma and abuse. Almost everything works for me.
    My only reservation lies with the plot. In every encounter between the Knot and Abra, Hat gets her butt soundly kicked: her hand is injured, then her troops get routed while inflicting only one casualty, then Abra escapes capture. By the time Abra and Daniel are "fleeing" to the Overlook, it's Rose that ought to be running in terror. Instead she arrogantly struts right into an obvious deathtrap, seeing sights like the Elevator Blood with unjustified, stupid smugness.
    This could be partially fixed by Daniel pointing out to Hatty that they attack children because they're cowardly incompetents. But how much better to rewrite the Knot as genuine threats?

    Well I haven't watched either movie start to end having never been a fan of horror movies.
    On the other I enjoy the lore and stories behind many of them and that is why I really like this channel, it gives me what I want in small manageable doses :-)

    I thought this movie tied back to The Shining very well and I liked it the only gripe I had was I had wished the movie explain more about the 'True Knot' people, had given more background on them. I thought they were fascinating.

    This movie so perfectly demonstrated what psychics, prophets & empaths go through the same way the movie "Ghost" brought to light mediums, spirits, demons and the afterlife. Gifted people adore this movie & we can't WAIT for it to become just as respected, understood & highly regarded as The Shining. It is bone chillingly awesome!

    I really liked it. I never saw it in theaters but got the bluray director cut. I agree, as a stand alone it would be considered a top tier movie. It had some big shoes to fill. Would have been better if Jack made a cameo. I think in about a decade Dr. Sleep will be considered a masterpiece. The acting is way too good. One of the movies where when you watch the Shining right before you watch Dr. Sleep, it'll hit a little different.
