Sad I have to clock in. You do a great job on the channel. As a constant reader for over two decades I’m so impressed and appreciative! Thank you, Stephen king’s book club!
As J. J. Abrams' "Overlook" prequel show may never happen now, this is exactly what I had hoped it would have been. Great to hear the full stories of Horace Derwent, Mrs. Massey and all the other unfortunate characters of this devilish place. 🙂 Great work! You're a great narrator. I'll likely keep coming back to this video.
You're very welcome... and thanks for watching! I had a lot of fun working on this... King sprinkles so much history throughout the novel, it was invigorating to try to organize it this way. During the "research" process I could sense how Jack must have felt when he became obsessed with the hotel.
@@stephenkingbookclub1054 I love the “story within a story” aspect of this book. Similar to the Marsten house lore in Salem’s Lot. I caught myself being as intrigued by the Overlook history as that of the Torrence family. Excellent job by the way.
A work of fiction is usually a composite of many actual places in real life, since the actual place in the fictional novel doesn’t really exist, we can all have a sense of familiarity and suspend our disbelief when we are reading a fictional novel, this is what is known as the hallmark of a good writer.
I'm just at the beginning but the Overlook and the Stanley are two different hotels. The Overlook hotel burned down the Stanley is still a working hotel.
I wouldn't have known this was a work of fiction if I hadn't already known about the hotel that was the model for the Overlook Hotel, and that that model hotel is still around.
You mean the Stanley hotel in Estes Park. This is the hotel that Steven King wrote the Shining at. There are a few pictures of the Stanley hotel in the beginning of this video. It's the hotel that is painted white. There is a couple of interior shots after the outside Stanley hotel shots that are also The Stanley. The Stanley is still operational and extremely haunted. Haunted or not it is the most amazing hotel I have ever visited and worth visiting
the Stanley Hotel hosts a horror convention every October (the ad reads "come play with us") but I've never been even though I spent 12 years in Denver! Bucket List now since back home in California. I heard a rumor that they want to put in the maze!
It did the same to me, which is intriguing. It could mean that the host is lying, and he really does stutter when he’s nervous, which calls into question how reliable he is. It could also be a hint about Jack’s shining, which he suppressed with booze, and Danny later would as well. Maybe Jack sensed something stutter-ish about the host, like that he would develop a stutter in the future. It definitely upped the severity, and the connection the host had to the Overlook, but if you think about it logically, the stutter itself isn’t scary. I think it’s very well used, regardless.
@@silverlightsinaugust2756The "host" of this video said his name was George Hatfield.. which is a character in the original novel who had a stutter when Jack first met him where he taught at school in Vermont 😊 George had a stutter, he was a student who wanted to be on the debate team, and Jack cut him from it due to his stutter, which made George angry, and not soon after, he slashed the tires on Jack's car, and Jack hit him, which caused him to get fired, which led to him getting the job at the Overlook in the book

Wonderful work, thank you so much! You clearly love Stephen King's books and know them well. I've always considered the Shining to be a nearly perfect novel, and this "podcast" narrative was a fantastic angle, love the ending, props to you! I think Stephen King would really like your channel, honestly.
Like one of Stephen King's novels, your podcast conjures a masterful work of fiction. The Stanley Hotel (on which Stephen King's "Overlook Hotel" from The Shining is based) still stands today in Estes Park, Colorado. It didn’t burn down in 1975. On the contrary, it presently offers guests very picturesque lodging in the Rockies.
