- PROs of using double layered tray for pine wood cat litter:
1) To quickly separate the pellets that have been moistened with the ones that are still good. So that in general pellets in the tray can last longer.
2) Quick / easy cleaning job.
p/s: There are many readily available double layered litter tray in the market. The tray and strainer we used in this video were of mix and match pair bought from hardware stores 😊.
Thank you for your interest in this video and apologies for the delayed response. So to answer/address some of the questions:
- I bought these trays and sifters from local homeware stores; they are quite common household items in my area. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful with links to online shops 😬
- My location is Malaysia. Mostly got them from ECO shops (sort of dollar store chains) with ECO brand or more often, no-brand. In the place where I'm staying they are quite cheap and generic and readily available.
- Pine wood pallets on the other hand, are not that common at my place (imported; mostly sold at pet shops).
- You can mix and match the tray and the sifter in any size as long as the sifter can sit on top of the tray leaving some gaps for the dust to fall beneath (2-inch gap or so).
- I saw some people DIY'd the sifter by punching /burning holes using soldering pens (quite a hassle, really. Can't say that I recommend this method😅).
- I'll share the links and/or other details to purchase the items in case I can find any.
Thank you! 🙏

I thought of stacking 2 litter boxes and make holes in one, but not getting a strainer! Great idea
You can do this with stainless steel restaurant pans. Bottom one should be full size 6 inch deep. Top one is perforated 4 inch deep. You can also place a puppy pad at the bottom or line a trash bag for easier cleanup
Can you make a video on this? Would love to see how you do it! And where you get your materials.
Can you please make a video on this process?
Thank you for this, i was trying to figure out how to clean my cats poop once i switch to wood pallets without having too much mess to deal with since I'm currently using clay litter. Will definitely have a look at the eco shop in my area for these items
Thanks for the video!! This looks so nice hehe, just recently got a cat and discovered how expensive and wasteful cat litter was 💀 I’m going to try your system out!
The only thing that would make this way better is if you could find a stainless steel sifting litter box. It's impossible to find a sifting tray that has the right sized holes in stainless steel. That would make it even more odor free!
I like this idea too, pairing it with a stainless steel pan to catch sawdust. however, I’m worried about static scaring my cat
this is exactly what ive been searching for. wish i had the money to create one myself because a stainless steel litter box with a sieve is the dream.
That would be awesome! Indeed plastic wares are not good in the long run (already switched to stainless steel/ceramic bowls for food and water). Hope more sustainable alternatives to these litter trays will become available!
Did you try searching for perforated hotel pans? That’s what I use.
@jaycee7530 you are a genius!!! I'm ordering these now, thank you!!!!
Thank u this is what I needed smart idea.
Glad to be of help, thank you for stopping by!
I use disposable bed pads, similar to puppy pads(I get them free through my insurance every month) I line the bottom tray with a liner so just take it out and toss and put a new one in, no cleaning pan.
I do the same, but once a month I wipe all the surfaces down with hydrogen peroxide before putting a new pad in. I also sprinkle pellets onto the pad, putting extra in the corners my pet tends to pee in. Gives a little "lift" to the strainer tray.
@@mettamorph4523 , I do the same, but will give it a hot wash in the bathtub. I made risers so my top pan is 2 1/2 inches above bottom pan so sawdust falls freely. Made the risers cutting down Temptations 16 oz pet treat containers, so they got recycled. I break everything down once a week and clean thoroughly. I use a diaper genie elite 2 to dispose of poop as live in a apt so cuts down having stinky poop in the garbage and can't toss it out late at night so works well. Genie will take 2 wks to fill up and then just open and dispose it. The bags have 7 ;layers of odor protection so never smell it when it's closed, and refill of the bags doesn't have to be replaced for months on end.
Thank you 😊
Please link the litter box parts thats whats important
I have added links in the pinned post. Thanks!
thank you
So I'm thinking of switching, but I'm just trying to understand. If the cat pees on the pellets, it breaks down into dust?
Yes
Love the idea, but upper tray wouldn't work with a cat that pee up high. The urine would shoot straight to the lower tray and stink up. Concept great when paired with the right cat. Regards.
you can add some pellets to the lower tray for these occasions
@@marios1861Great suggestion. Thanks!
Simple as that. Ty
Genius
I would have been nice to know the products used to hold the litter
I just use a multipurpose tray. It is usually food-grade and sold as homewares item.
anyone know how often should i be regularly disinfecting the litter box? don’t know if i should do it more or less
Where do you get a drainer fromx
I've looked thru the google universe and cannot find anything like that strainer - could you tell us the name brand or what it was called or where you got it????? Not worried about finding a tray. Thanks
Commercial grade food colander or strainer.
I use the arm and hammer sifting litter tray. It has the sifting tray and two solid trays. Works well for me. I buy my pine pellets at tractor supply co. A 40lb. bag is $6.
Walmart sells an Arm N Hammer litter box that has two trays that are solid and one that has holes for sifting. It’s like $20.
Will you provide a link to purchase the tray and strainer

I'm sorry I bought them from local homeware stores. Will share the links if I ever find similar ones online!

What spray/solution did u use
Use puppy pads between them for easier clean up.
What she just did is super easy. And you don’t have to toss the bottom tray sawdust every day. Just shake the tray and be done with it. Toss it twice a week and wipe out the tray. Using puppy pads is super expensive and terrible for the environment and it’s LITTERally the same amount of work.
@xradelox I absolutely agree with you. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
@Ona: Yeah it always bothers me when people want to use puppy pads along with the pine pellets. A big reason people switch from clay to pine pellets is for the environment, but the puppy pads are terrible for the environment! And pellets don’t harden to the plastic like clay does. You barely touch the sawdust with the scoop and it fluffs right up and is so easy to dispose of.
How often do you clean this?
I pick up the poo daily then sift. The sawdust can last for days before it stinks, so I just clean the lower tray every 2-4 days.
Just use water to clean it and u can get the Tidy cat Breeze box
Where did you get the pan with all the holes?
Yes I also wanna know
I think they are mostly available in shops that sell plastic colanders/strainers ~these are usually used in kitchen/food preparation
Hello, great video. SO how do you control the poop smell. I have heard many complaints that this is going to happen, as cats won't cover it up.>> So what is your solution??
Just pick out the poop as soon as they do it. Once the poop is gone, you won’t smell it. I smell poop with Clay litter and plenty of cats won’t cover their poop in Clay litter either so I don’t know why people complain about the pellets. It really is not a big deal.
@xradelox Agree. Just scoop out the poop as frequent as possible. Times when I were rushing I would just 'help' to cover it with the pellets first and come back later to for proper clean up. It really does not smell unless you let the litter accumulates for days.
Idk my cats cover their poop with the pellets and dust, as the dust only drops thru when someone sifts the box. Also, usually I'm there to pick it up immediately after they poop which helps. And
I have switched but I also am finding that the poop smells a bit. I do clean it up at least once a day.
Should I be thoroughly cleaning the top bin too?
Would this pine pellets work for dogs too?.
Yes but you need to train them to use them.
Where did you buy the sifting trays
I bought them from local homeware stores (they are kinda common in my place).
Wat abt cat urine .. When cat pee then wood gets wet u remove the wet woods or no
Cat pee turns the pellets into sawdust and the sawdust falls through the holes into the lower tray where you can remove it. You also put some extra pellets in the lower tray to absorb any liquid that makes it down there.
You don’t smell the pee with pine pellets like you do with clay litter.
@Samia Merchant The pellet will dissolve upon contact with water. Just give the litter tray a gentle shake so that the dust go down the bottom tray. So only the 'unused' ones left on top. Thank you for stopping by!
@Krikit That's a good idea! Thank you for the comment!
The top strainer box is so unique but so hard to find without knowing search terms, that it'd just be helpful if you'd go to the hardware store, photograph the label, and share a link to it. Seriously. Please?
It’s a commercial grade food colander or strainer.

Where can i buy it im from egypt
Try to search for rectangular colanders or trays that are normally sold in kitchenware sections!
Waaay easier with a plastic liner.
I usually do not use liners unless necessary (e.g for use in crates for sick cats). I personally think plastic liners are not environmentally friendly and also costly. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Does this have a bad cat urine smell?
In my experience wood pellets last the longest before they starts to stink. Nowadays I also use tofu litter alternately (they do not smell as well), but need to be cleaned up more frequently.
Honestly, the pellets are so cheap I just dump them every time I clean the box and put new ones in
That’s a lot of work. And seems like if you have multiple cats they’re just gonna step all over that urine until you sift it out
Which is how nature is supposed to be and clumping literally is the same and worse cuz sometimes cat declump everything cuz they when they cave for new poop or pee
How to disinfect?
You can use sanitizer sprays or soak them in bleach solutions and rinse with water.
