I had a Ruger SP 101 in 357 many years ago. It's 3"bbl was extremely accurate. Later picked up a Winch 92 in 357. That combo served me well for over 20yrs. Wish I still had them. At 80yrs I've slowed down in my shooting. I still go out with my S&W 19 & Henry Big Boy 357 lever action. Love that combo.

Another good one Señor George! I’ve been looking at the revolver too but I want a 4” barrel. Not so concealable but the benefits of the extra 2” is worth it. I appreciate your analysis of your trigger pull because I tend to flinch that same way, low and left, pushing the gun at the target.

@@TargetSuite i find the extra sight radius really helps fine tuning the double action pull. If you’re doing something wrong it shows up readily but if you do everything right- I dunno, the bullet goes where you point it from a revolver that feels good to carry. Hard to verbalize but you know it when you’re shooting it, lol.

I appreciate your videos! I started out on double action Smith revolvers years ago, and then went to semi-auto's. Over the years, I made sure my wife and daughter adopted revolvers as their go to guns! I was gifted a lever action Marlin in 1895 357, and have used it as my camping rifle for several years. I think the158 gr, or 170 gr loads I use, would certainly 'knock the snot' out of anything up to a grizzly in the US of A. Love that 92 you're using. Your tests show just how much a rifle adds to a 38 or 357 with a 18" barrel.

Doin great George. I was trained the same with double action, only to keep the finger tip on the trigger all the way through. Even though I have small hands, I like your method better. Never found double action necessary, but now we have a number of DAO pistols, so it's a good skill, even though every gun/trigger is different. Good Luck

I have the SP101 .357 with a six inch barrel. This week I ordered a bag of Wolff springs from MidwayUSA to adjust a few triggers in a couple of pistols. The DA is almost more than I can do now with the old hands and original springs. Also, I mostly use .38 SPL for target shooting in my .357s. The old Dillon SDb is set up and I can shoot, wipe the case and reload in a very short time.

I see Buffalo Bore has some pretty cool data:
    180gr LFN-GC cast lead:
    1,375 fps (4") 756 fpe
    1,851 fps (18.5") 1,370 fpe (614 gained)
Yardage at which rifle-fired bullet returns to 4" barrel velocity, assuming still air conditions: ~165 yards. In effect, the rifle allows you to make a 4" revolver point-blank shot from 165 yards away with this load. Assuming 1,000 fpe for deer harvesting, that happens at ~ 90 yards (from rifle).
    ----------------------
158gr JHC (looks like Speer Deep Curl):
    1,485 fps (4") 774 fpe
    2,153 fps (18.5") 1,627 fpe (853 gained)
Yardage at which rifle-fired bullet returns to 4" barrel velocity, assuming still air conditions: ~170 yards. In effect, the rifle allows you to make a 4" revolver point-blank shot from 170 yards away with this load. Assuming 1,000 fpe for deer harvesting, that happens at ~ 110 yards (from rifle).
    ---------------------
125gr JHC (looks like Speer Deep Curl):
    1,603 fps (4") 713 fpe
    2,298 fps (18.5") 1466 fpe (753 gained)
Yardage at which rifle-fired bullet returns to 4" barrel velocity, assuming still air conditions: ~140 yards. In effect, the rifle allows you to make a 4" revolver point-blank shot from 140 yards away with this load. 1,000 fpe happens at ~ 70 yards (from rifle). ***I don't recommend 125gr for deer!
I'd imagine those would bump a little more with 20" barrel. Impressive energy gained from going to a carbine, more than double! I used a ballistic calculator for additional data above, using Buffalo Bore's ballistic coefficient stats on those exact projectiles.

With double action and striker fired guns, I find that focusing on the front sight, and thinking "sha-boom" really smooths out the trigger pull. This is great! Sometimes people have a difficult time fathoming the difference in power between a .357 Mag in a revolver and carbine/rifle. This definitely helps to demonstrate the disparity. The slow motion reveals the degree of hydrostatic shock taking place. I'm also curious about the difference in expansion, penetration, and fragmentation of these rounds.

Hi George, I have to say your idea of the foam under the jell blocks is awesome! Sure took all the jell hop out off the first block. It looked like you were pulling the trigger with the first joint of the finger. When I do that it makes most of my shots pull left and low. I pull about halfway between the first joint and the finger tip take up the "slack" in the trigger till e hit the wall the squeeze through the pull. Just saying that's worked for me. Flinch is something I found I do when the shot surprises me. With practice one can know when it's going to go bang. It's great to have you back.

a wonderful video .iam disabled now but not helpless and not complaining but conquering. being a senior citizen ,older guy I am returning back to old school training that worked then and will now.even young people have trouble holding a pistol still, this works for me and I teach it. double action shooting_ both eyes open concrete front sight and target .to help with wobble make a line with front sigh movement 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, left - right passing bullseye and when ready for center squeeze trigger. some of us old------er timers use 6 o'clock - 12 o'clock, up - down movement . try it you might like it and shoot more consistent double action. start slow, comfortable, don't rush the trigger. as time goes shoot a little bit faster in progressive stages finding your limitations and build on them bettering your self. count all shots and misses. don't try excuse them , correct the and any undesirable habits like flinch , trigger jerk. sometimes we need to start at the old trails to find new beginnings. nanna and papa love you

I was struggling with double action shooting as well. What made all the difference in the world for me was laser trainers. You can shoot as much as you want without burning ammo, in the comfort of your own home (proper precautions taken obviously) and there's no recoil so you can practice staging and smooth trigger pulls without distraction. I spent awhile with the laser system, and then confirmed that the skills translated over to live fire. Flinching is pretty much a thing of the past. They're also a great teaching tool for new shooters to get the feel of a real firearm without the noise and kick. Then when they go out to the range for the real thing, it's not as much of a plunge right into the deep end of the pool.
Obviously there's a significant investment since you have to buy the targets, plus laser cartridges for every chamber in your revolver if you want to shoot continuously, but you can burn that cost in ammunition very quickly these days and not get as much practice. Plus you only have to feed a five rounder. I had to fill seven and I still feel it was worth it.
I went with the Laser Ammo i-MTTS system which is an absolute hoot to shoot since they link up to each other wirelessly and have several types of drills programmed into them. They're like steel plates, you can set them up in a row or spread them out across the room, whatever you feel like. The targets use AAA batteries and the laser cartridges use little 3-cell watch batteries that last surprisingly long, especially since the load is spread out across multiple units in a revolver. They'll happily power a thousand shots and they're not horrifically expensive to replace. Everything I need was found on Amazon and Optics Planet, which was cheaper than buying directly from the manufacturer website. There are other brands that are probably equally fun and useful, I just can't speak to them directly as I've not tried them.
Just a note, you can get visible or infrared lasers. I recommend visible. IR is a bit more realistic I suppose, but every firearm zeroes a bit differently with the laser cartridges and it pays to be able to see exactly what's going on so you're not frustrated just trying to learn the behavior of the system. The red dot isn't the least bit distracting in my opinion. On my gun I really can't even see it as it's behind the sights 99% of the time.

My father used to have an SP 101 before it got stolen.
I liked the lines of it but it was a gun that essentially everybody had a difficult time shooting well.
Worse none of the ammo we tried in 357 or 38 was anywhere close to the point of aim. Even shooting is carefully as possible and getting decent groups it was clear that at about 40 ft you had to be aiming more than a foot off to get your point of impact where you wanted it. Eventually I put fluorescent orange paint on the very bottom serration square thing of the front ramp. And by putting that square directly on top of the line that defines the top of the gutter site, I found a aiming hold that consistently worked well with standard Remington 125 grain JHP 357.
There's a gun I really wanted to like but just didn't. I've wanted to try a GP100 for years but there's a part of me that's afraid I will have the same experience.

    Interesting.
Shooting double action is a skill that must be practiced and it perishes over times if you don't practice. Back many years ago I was law enforcement certified. Long enough back double action revolvers were the weapon of choice. We were trained to not stage the trigger but to learn to pull through smoothly. It is tough but can be done. Another thing I learned is that a good percentage of officers are abysmal shots. A few are very good but most are not.

    • @TargetSuite

Thanks for the input. No doubt, an "emergency" will almost certainly demand a straight pull through. And that is an admirable goal. But for recreational shooting, the stage will work for me, especially with a revolver like this one that has an abysmal DA pull.

Shooting is out to 50 yards in comp and out to 100 yards for fun. Most people are amazed at how well those guys shoot. It does take practice but that's part of the fun. This ting you're doing is quite the storm for learning your pistol! According to what I can see , it is turning out to be a great testing device. .357 cartridges are plenty strong for that caliber of pistol. I'm glad to have chosen that caliber too for my edc handgun. The rifle does it way better justice the longer barrel makes that much difference. You're on to something and I thank you for this video. How do you. Like it otherwise? For one thing it is incredibly light and the weight is missing. My 357 Service-Six weights a lot more. Makes me want to consider it a toy , but I know that's not right. I also had trouble with swc in my winchester 94. It seems that the front edge of the swc driving band was getting hung up on the very square cut, chamber lead. I have heard that the 92s had the same trouble because of the similar feed angles. For my purposes I had no attatchment to the swc and switched to a standard flat nose bullet. I hadn't heard that the 73s had the same problem but with their straight line feeding I would think that a mild chamfer on the chamber lead would solve it. Something to talk to a gunsmith about to see if that is appropriate.

    • @nicke3276

In the 1873 the 250 gr swc will get stuck from the mag tube into the lifting block and if it doesn't get stuck it's a bear to feed into the chamber. Easier to single feed them. That being said my initial thoughts are that your over all cartridge length may be a tad too long. Besides that I would check all of the cartridge dimensions to be sure they're within spec. After that I would look for burrs in the action that might be keeping the cartridge from passing through properly. After some thought I realized that I know a few who shoot swc in Uberti 73s with no probs, at least as 38spl in 357 mag guns. George, looks like you definitely got some avid shooters talking about this video. I've been cogitating on this one and went back to that series on the Ruger 22 cal pistol problems, but most of all, back to the video August 11, 2020 - a pistol caliber carbine with power, the Ruger Deerfield, ( that was great video). Without getting into projectile coefficients and ballistics - one point I lost some direction on with this video. I'm I correct in that you put the same pistol caliber ammo in a rifle? If so wouldn't the variation in lands and grooves, (rifling), make a real big difference primarily on accuracy of pistol ammo in the rifle? The 2" barrel obviously impacts velocity. Maybe a better way to ask - are pistol lands and grooves the same as rifles with same caliber? If not won't you damage the 1892 barrel using pistol ammo, and have a loss in accuracy? Apologies for long question, which can probably be answered " yes". The discharge pressure will also vary in discharging bullet from rifle versus pistol increasing distance? Thanks.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have never heard anyone mention a difference in the rifling design that would result in damage to one or the other. I do know that ammunition optimized for a 2in Ruger SP101 will perform poorly in the longer Barrel Winchester and a vice versa. And really this was not about performance per se but just demonstrating the effect of barrel length when it comes to Velocity and also impact on the jail. I didn't really mean to argue for much more than just the basic facts. Thanks for your comment, and thank you for watching!

Some are 4 to 5lbs on the lighter end & others 10 to 12lbs. Hard to switch from one to the other. Very good video. Love the 357 in a 92 & revolver. Thanks for your time.

Yep. The XPB definitely "outgunned" the XTP.

Is it true self defense .357 isn’t the best through carbines because it goes too fast and doesn’t perform well as a result?
