They're a monopoly. They also own most of the sunglass stores in malls and on the internet. They even own a vision insurance company. They markup prices as high as 1000%. They shouldn't exist.

There are other brands out there and other stores (not to mention the internet), but people are lazy or not fussed.
Personally I don’t mind Persol, Oliver Peoples and some raybans- but only when heavily discounted.
What they are doing is no different to what we have with most areas of shopping (from LVMH to Nestle, or Murdoch Media to Kraft).

Maui Jim has excellent customer service. When everyone else was having difficulties with service in 2020/21 I sent my pair of Maui jim prescription sunglasses to them for the nose pad replacement. Because of the expense they’re a few years old, because of that the white lettering had worn off of one side, it was not dirty the print was removed. The pair I got back appeared new. They’re my lenses in the frames but I somehow suspected they either gave me new frames or reprinted the type, knowing manufacturing and companies they’re most likely new. For $14.95 which basically covers ups back to me, I have like new glasses. All done in less than a week.

You are correct that Maui Jim support is amazing. I own 3 pairs and broke the frame on one of them. They told me to mail it to them and they would fix the frame. When they came back I noticed the small scratches on the frames were gone. Then I realized that they gave me a brand new pair of the same glasses. It was years ago so I don't remember the price. It was either free or like $25 total (including shipping). I was shocked that the mailing address for their support is Peoria, IL and not Maui, HI.

I have a pair of Sungod. You can customize the frames, lens and icon color which means your glasses can be one of a kind. The frames are sturdy and the hinges are pretty much unbreakable. The lens offer great polarization and clarity. They are very light and comfortable........Only problem is the frames ride high on your nose which makes it harder to wear baseball type hats because the bill of the hat rests on the frame.

  • @wwolf5670

One of my first pairs of Randolphs (Sportsman) were run over by a car. Randolph didn't replace them because they were able to fix them. The damage was minimal (slightly bent frame and cracked lenses). Had they been Raybans... i've done more damage to Rayban aviators accidentally sitting on them than a car did driving over my Randolphs. Anyway, have several pairs of Sportsman and Aviators now. Nice company to deal with and solid glasses. That said, I love a classic vintage pair of B&L Rayban Aviators or Outdoorsman. The teardrop on those is ever so slightly cooler.

@@chrissy3949 they’re Marcolin, another huge Italian umbrella. TF eyewear is beautiful, unfortunately the quality and longevity is terrible. Same for Gucci, heartbreakingly. I’m a licensed optician and these are the most frequently brought in brands for repairs and failures. Independent brands are superior. People don’t realize the big names are all just under licenses. They’re all being made by the same big three manufacturers. I do own several TF, because I get gifts and discounts, but they’re the worst. Most models can’t even be repaired. :(

@@danielleblanchett5383 Good question. I do think that GL is generally worth the price because they produce many great looking frames. But, from my experience, I’d say anybody who expects to eventually own two or more pairs of GLs (or brand of a comparable price point) is much better off waiting to instead get one pair of a more premium brand, such as Mr Leight, Ahlem, Jacque Marie Mage, Chrome Hearts or Robert Marc. You definitely feel a major difference in quality when you wear more premium brands, so in general you’d be better off buying them before a brand like GL if you’re willing to pay the higher price. I’ve been into sunglasses a while and have around 60 pairs that I like a lot; but while I’ve generally found that the GL ones look good I still just about never wear them because they don’t have the quality feel of wearing more premium brands. So, I suppose I’ve changed my opinion since the comment I wrote two years ago.
