Despite being acquired by Luxottica in 1995 Persol sunglasses are still handmade in its historic factory in Lauriano, Italy. I brought it up last time and I'll bring it up again, leisure society, despite being stupid expensive, is probably the best out there for frame + lens quality. Ive never had oem lens that are anti-reflective but have none of the ar glisten and its actually insane, and they've been doing gold plated lenses with meye precious for quite a while. This is also not even mentioning that the acetate frames are competitively prices and the titanium frames are like nothing else since its carved out of a block. As far as other brands you should check out, native sons and the other brands that tommy o'gara is involved with are a great mid-point between something like masunaga and ahlem. VioRou is also japanese but its got a very french look while using titanium over stainless steel like most european countries. Andy Brook is also something that got on my radar that you might like. They're the closest to Dita in size as far as indy brands go and theyre quite nice.
I have asked this question earlier to Robert . Hope he will answear and I hope this does not boder you! Im can not spend more then 100-150 dollars/euros on a pair of sunglasses. Can you tell me some other brands that have a good range of shapes ,sizes and a good quality for the lenses in that 100-150 price range. Thank you in advance for your help!
@borsh2002 serengeti like you said and vuarnet are imo the best lenses in that price range. Maui jim is pretty good if you can find a sale, ray-ban, as questionable as the quality can be, have good lenses if you find a pair with glass lenses. Lots of local French brands also hit that price/quality ratio but that requires you to live near France since they only sell locally but, lesca which is around the $200 price point offers glass lenses and is very nice. Akila and Gast are great options if frame quality is a priority for you. Also, if you can find a sale or are open to second hand frames, leisure society like I mentioned earlier is a great buy. Salt also uses cr-39 lenses that somehow trump most glass lenses like leisure society and if you can find a sale it's a great buy. Lastly, if you find a masanaga sunglasses on sale or a frame with precious metal coating on the lenses or second-hand, they will have glass lenses as well. Obviously all this varies based on where you live and if you're OK with lightly used or not but the first two options + lesca if you can stretch a little or Maui jim if you have a costco near you are your best options.
I picked up a pair of Oakley sunglasses recently, on a really nice deep discount sale offered on the brand site. Overall the quality wasn't bad, but I've got an older pair of Oakley sunglasses and I could tell the difference. I took advantage of the free return offer. Never again...
I have/had several X-Metal frames with Unobtainium. One thing I found is the coatings do not last. They are outstanding when new but over the years the coatings just fade, comparing this with Ray Ban and Maui Jim's that have held on to their tints. Also, their frames did break, compared to my Ray Ban's and Maui Jims.
@@robbyr2145 I knew someone who had a pair of Oakley Juliet sunglasses and he ended up selling them before the prices seriously spiked, for those reasons. The lens coatings faded unevenly and the frames were a bear to keep tight.
Hey Robert, watching you open up that pair of Masunaga Monk frame was hilarious! Cracked me up silly. Another amazing video from you again. Thank you for that. 😊
Hard to beat Zeiss in this. Even with regards medical use of lenses for Lasik medical lasers. Unless someone can find a great comparable Japanese lens manufacturers.
Would have been nice to see some cost information in the video for each brand. Just a rough £300-500 etc. would have bee very helpful in order to compare the relative value proposition.
@@thespectaclefactory yes, and explain why RB 4179 which I have for a year now are bad ... and I am happy with them more than any sunglasses i had before (I am 60, and I had a really lot of them, fact I have a buch of them now...) ... how did Luxottica fooled me?
With so many people needing prescription glasses nowadays I wonder if the lens quality is necessarily that important - what is the percentage of customers buying glasses with original lenses vs customized ones? Obviously, I have complicated correction and would hate to waste money on lenses I’d need to replace with very expensive customized lenses.
Glad to see you gave Randolph a little love. Got me Maui Jim Kaiwi Channel; blue lenses, a Randloph 23k white gold with cobalt lenses in my meager collection and just got ordered Cartier Panthere rimless grey lenses. I'm done for a while. Carpe Diem. You are a greaat Ambassador.
I love Dita frames as they are quite oversized and very fashionable like Mach 5 offering unparalleled sun protection during California summers. my go to frames for any prolonged sun exposure. Otherwise I prefer Jmm frames. Frankly I wouldn’t wear Cartier frames. Respectable, yes but a bit boring to me. Some stigma attached to them, too. Luxury? When you have so many places selling them here including discounted at Costco in California?
No you haven't become an eyewear expert by just watching this. You just got spoon fed some bits of info, relative bits of info, biased bits of info, personal taste bits of info, etc. now go on and do your own research some more and maybe you will become an eyewear expert.
Which would be a great pair of sunglesses for someone with weakness to sunlight or brightness? Taking into account that they will be on my face 24/7. Thank you!
Paying "somewhat" for the name?! Like 1000% somewhat?! Great video, as usual! And, BTW, don´t be so angry with Arnault (LVMH), he is just so busy putting his children into executive positions of whatever he owns, that he does not have the time to delivery anything. Of course, treat as you like them, people will still keep buying LVMH stuff, as you may well know. Sad world of Luxury: actually there are maybe only 3-4 luxury companies worth buying from nowadays imho. But, what do I know...
it would have been much more helpful to have the individual Luxottica brands put into the relevant tiers rather than just lump them together. Are you saying they're all just meh? below meh?? e.g. I've had several Rayban sunglasses in the past and noticed a significant change in quality when I bought some Persol ones. Also, as others have commented, a rough price for each would be more helpful and perhaps clarify some of the reason for your grading.
Great video, would be useful for a list of each brand in each category, as it’s difficult to tell each brand just by the logo when reviewing your categorisation.
I’ve never seen a channel like this before , I thought it was just a review on everything luxottica made , I’m surprised there’s more brands that haven’t sold off their souls to Luxottica…. I’m impressed, thank you !
Carrera, Oakley, Rayban....these are the brands I have been buying for the last decade. The ones you have on the Amazing tier, most I haven't even heard about 😂😂
Perfect video for what I was looking for which was helping me make an informed decision on which brands are worth paying more for and why I shouldnt just buy a $30 pair off Amazon. Now to decide on a great do everything pair for driving, walking on the beach, and hiking. Thanks for the video.
Hope during time you would update this topic list with top 50 😎. I think also than could been included brands like Matsuda, Vysen, Peter and May , Rigards , Massada .....
This guy definitely knows his stuff! Quite an expert for sure...very informative, All nice glasses, but for the average person that either breaks, loses or has a pair stolen probably every summer one way or another, wayyy too expensive for the the people not in the millionaire's club wearing Mayback & Cartier Frames lol...we're lucky to "maybe" have acquired a Rolex Submariner in our 40's, I wear Oakley's and most people I talk to won't even come close to spending the money for a pair of them, I've had the same pair for 20 years, replaced the Lenses once, and the rubber components once, and just recently my mother gave me her pair (Wire Tap 2.0) and I found a set of Flak Beta's that both fit my narrow face just right, I would look like a space cadet wearing 95% of the frames in this video, they all look like over-sized woman's frames to me 🤷♂️
I have to say my Maui Jim's are the best for me. In my opinion. I have no data to support my opinion. Lol they just feel good on my face and my eyes are comfortable when I wear them. I want to see a video of the best sunglasses with some sort of data points. Not because the creator thinks they look cool.
What about Vuarnet!!! Blackfin and OVVO should get some love too. I really enjoy carrying TAVAT, they have been a dream to partner with and every line is remarkable in its own right.
I understand the luxotica tier but I would like to see those brands put into an actual tier so we can compare because if you see this tier list without context then you wouldn’t know that some brands in that list still make some great products…. But a down vote due to the company that owns them is kinda cheeky… that being said after watching this video I really need a pair of Masunaga and L’écurie, beautiful glasses
It’s sad that as soon as a frame is Luxxotica you decide to just plop it into the last category rather than parsing it as an expert. Not all Luxoticas are made the same, and while I know none of them should be in Perfection or Amazing, I’m sure one or two can be in Meh or even Ok. Persol is one of those that I think you were unfair to, they’re definitely made better than the typical Luxotica junk. I still haven’t seen you deal with RayBan yet, but I hope you don’t just plop it in the last category, that’s their flagship and I’d be interested for your reasons why it might be better or worse. Please in the future parse out Luxotica better, that’s why we watch you, for an honest opinion.
I agree with you.. Evaluating brands with negative opinions only because they are under the Luxottica group seems rather stupid to me.. In addition, you always have to consider the cost of the glasses, you can't think that a brand that sells glasses at a certain price is criticized for the fact that it has a construction not the height of one that costs three or four times as much..
I’m debating about pulling the trigger for a pair of Robert le Roche. Still love my Barton Perreira but the Masunaga frames are incredible. This is the first time I’ve had a close look at them and I’m hugely impressed. Well done Rob. Another excellent video.
Hi, Which are the Japanese brands you speak of which are in its own league? I own a Mykita and Matsuda myself. And Eyevan, NativeSons and Retrosuperfuture. How would these brands compare on this scale? Also my favourite brand at the moment is Lindberg, could you give some more information on this brand in terms of quality
From the first time I laid my eyes on a JMM frame I knew it spoke high quality to me. I wear and enjoy nothing but high quality. As soon as I put on a pair of JMM for the first time I knew they were cemented for me as my favorite. 7 pairs later the attraction is still there. The attention to detail and the way they stand out on my huge head just makes me feel complete. When someone else who has a pair catches mine it feels like a cult of the know. I get questions and compliments all the time on all of my frames. They are just on another level for me.
Thanks for responding yo previous message, For someone that’s on a budget up to £200 for frames. What brands would you suggest? I appreciate that now your ratings have a specifically labeled "Luxottica" tier. I see how that group operates here... in 90% of the shops, and they are the threat to the eyewear and eyecare world you say they are, no more no less.

@@pmwaffle9348 I live in S-E Europe, Romania.
Thank you for the answear!
I miss the pre luxotica era of Oakley. My favourite being the X-metal series❤
I had a pair of Romeo 2.0 back in the day. Total shame.
I bought a Costa Del Mar, and the box said it is manufactured by OAKLEY USA... funk Luxottica
What tier is Vuarnet placed in?
Hey Robert, watching you open up that pair of Masunaga Monk frame was hilarious! Cracked me up silly. Was like watching a little kid with his new toy 😂... like a levitating samurai wielding his katana! (You need to watch the new tv series Shogun - fantastically well-made!) Another amazing video from you again. Thank you for that. 😊
Have you tried eyevan?? What is your option of them.
what do you think about GentleMonster?
Id like a video based purely on lense quality. Honestly the most important factor to me.
Great idea for a video
Hard to beat Zeiss in this. Even with regards medical use of lenses for Lasik medical lasers. Unless someone can find a great comparable Japanese lens manufacturers.
Your thoughts on Celine? Thanks!
I think Celine are Kering. They would fall under the "OK" tier I think.
ferragamo? is it any good?
What do you think about Saint Laurent ? I liked the frame but not sure about the quality.
I think Saint Laurent are Kering. They would fall under the "OK" tier I think.
I didn’t see Japanese glasses in this list NATIVE SONS, EFFECTOR. They are also of a very high level, what is your opinion about these brands?
Would have been nice to see some cost information in the video for each brand. Just a rough £300-500 etc. would have bee very helpful in order to compare the relative value proposition.
Hello, what is the model of the sunglasses shown in min 30:25?
Yo man... It's the "Masunaga Dizzy S11 GOLD 55"... 😎💪👊👉
Have at it!
You're welcome!
I'd love to hear your take on Matsuda.
What do you think about Mont Blanc eyewear? I just bought some online and have no idea what to except
Used to be zeiss lenses, not sure honestly but I like the style
Hi, could you rate Matsuda?
2nd for Matsuda
@@christophernicolson5086 I'm thinking they're near Masunaga quality.
Amazing! Any thoughts on Ermenegildo Zegna eyewear? Saw one frame of them and loved it!
Very interesting. You should do a video on what makes a good sunglass lens.
Great idea!
I've been out of the loop for a bit, but what are your thoughts on Revos? I had a pair from the 80s and loved them
Glad to see Dita up at the top. Their handmade Japanese frames are just gorgeous to me!
So true! Dont get me wrong, Cartier has their place in the simplistic “classic” styles, but they certainly aren’t that luxurious.
Wow this channel is a real find! Love Sun glasses, love watches. Fun to spot what is being worn on both fronts! Subbed 😊
Nice, thanks!
I'm a big fan of Rayban Wayfarer and Clubmaster. This video is very informative. I became an eyewear expert by just watching this. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
@@thespectaclefactory Dita was rated as just meh and overrated on previous video on this channel, wonder why now it is rated as "amazing"
What brands are you referring to?
@@TizzleT Barton Perreira
What brands?
What luxury brands are worth buying nowadays?
What brand/model metal frame glasses are you wearing during most of the video? I want a pair!
it would have been much more helpful to have the individual Luxottica brands put into the relevant tiers rather than just lump them together. Are you saying they're all just meh? below meh?? e.g. I've had several Rayban sunglasses in the past and noticed a significant change in quality when I bought some Persol ones. Also, as others have commented, a rough price for each would be more helpful and perhaps clarify some of the reason for your grading.
What’s your view on Rudy Project?
Great video, would be useful for a list of each brand in each category, as it’s difficult to tell each brand just by the logo when reviewing your categorisation.
I’ve never seen a channel like this before , I thought it was just a review on everything luxottica made , I’m surprised there’s more brands that haven’t sold off their souls to Luxottica…. I’m impressed, thank you !
Or have been forced to sell with blackmailing methods like Oakley
Carrera, Oakley, Rayban....these are the brands I have been buying for the last decade.
The ones you have on the Amazing tier, most I haven't even heard about 😂😂
Rayban and oaks of modern times have deteriorated quality.
Similar here, most of the top 2 tiers seem not to be even imported to my country :D
No wonder, you probably like buying sheitt
Sounds like a You problem
@@seminky5341 Even the Aviator?
great video. i'm shopping for new glasses. how would you rate Dunhill and cutler and gross?
Cazal is my new go-for after watching this video. Really amazing designs.
Looking for new sunglasses. What category would you put SPY?
This guy definitely knows his stuff! Quite an expert for sure...very informative, All nice glasses, but for the average person that either breaks, loses or has a pair stolen probably every summer one way or another, wayyy too expensive for the the people not in the millionaire's club wearing Mayback & Cartier Frames lol...we're lucky to "maybe" have acquired a Rolex Submariner in our 40's, I wear Oakley's and most people I talk to won't even come close to spending the money for a pair of them, I've had the same pair for 20 years, replaced the Lenses once, and the rubber components once, and just recently my mother gave me her pair (Wire Tap 2.0) and I found a set of Flak Beta's that both fit my narrow face just right, I would look like a space cadet wearing 95% of the frames in this video, they all look like over-sized woman's frames to me 🤷♂️
Hi Robert,
I like very much a french brand that calls Brett. I'm sure you also know. Did you have some opinion about?
I love how he based this on zero data. Just the amount of technology that goes on in the Oakley prizm sunglasses is phenomenal.
If you compare them to Cartier, you feel the difference.
Honestly I have both the prizm and Nike show x3… The Nike were half the price and way better.
I have to say my Maui Jim's are the best for me. In my opinion. I have no data to support my opinion. Lol they just feel good on my face and my eyes are comfortable when I wear them. I want to see a video of the best sunglasses with some sort of data points. Not because the creator thinks they look cool.
What do you think about the Porsche Sunglasses P´8930 ? Would you recommend them for a round face? Are they good quality?
What about Vuarnet!!! Blackfin and OVVO should get some love too. I really enjoy carrying TAVAT, they have been a dream to partner with and every line is remarkable in its own right.
What is the model number for those mclarens?
I understand the luxotica tier but I would like to see those brands put into an actual tier so we can compare because if you see this tier list without context then you wouldn’t know that some brands in that list still make some great products…. But a down vote due to the company that owns them is kinda cheeky… that being said after watching this video I really need a pair of Masunaga and L’écurie, beautiful glasses
if you dont mind me asking, what watch are you wearing?
I don't mind! It's a Cartier Tank Solarbeat
@@thespectaclefactory thanks. Looks good
It’s sad that as soon as a frame is Luxxotica you decide to just plop it into the last category rather than parsing it as an expert.
What you think of Lindberg?
I like how you shamelessly named the bottom tier Luxottica 😂
I keep to the classics like slots and occasionally blackjack. Keeps things light and fun. What's your strategy
I’m debating about pulling the trigger for a pair of Robert le Roche. Still love my Barton Perreira but the Masunaga frames are incredible. This is the first time I’ve had a close look at them and I’m hugely impressed.
Well done Rob. Another excellent video.
Hi,
Which are the Japanese brands you speak of which are in its own league? I own a Mykita and Matsuda myself. And Eyevan, NativeSons and Retrosuperfuture. How would these brands compare on this scale?
Also my favourite brand at the moment is Lindberg, could you give some more information on this brand in terms of quality
This video has been a real education. Thank you
I'm glad you thought so! Thanks for watching
which glasses were you wearing in this video ? Thanks
Ermenegildo Zegna with Carl Zeiss lenses. Rating? I got some and amazing.
Top of OK
@@thespectaclefactoryZenga vary. Some higher end than others. But your opinion is welcomed thx
Thoughts on Tom Davies glasses? Don't think I've ever seen you mention them.
Thanks for responding yo previous message,
For someone that’s on a budget up to £200 for frames. What brands would you suggest? I don’t touch anything luxottica and I have stopped getting Tom ford are the quality are trash as my old TF glasses deteriorate over months go by even tho I looked after them Thanks
All the perfections have very ugly frames 😮
Masunagas are very nice.
Untrue but to each his own
You obviously have never had one of their frames in your hands
@@LuisMercadoorgLol dawg having them in your hands has nothing to do with whether they're ugly. People on the street aren't gonna pull em off and fondle em before they judge you 😂
They truly are hideous.
I heared much good reactions about the brand Max Pittion. What’s your opinion on them?
One tip for future videos: please put up the name of each brand on the screen as you start talking about them. This helps speakers of English as a second language, and helps broaden your reach.
Yeah the logos are too small to read, visual aid is quite bad here
You can also put chapters on the video that help when you want to see where a specific brand falls

I appreciate that now your ratings have a specifically labeled "Luxottica" tier.
I see how that group operates here... in 90% of the shops, and they are the threat to the eyewear and eyecare world you say they are, no more no less.
Why Luxottica ? Is a enemy?😮😅

Hi. Thanks for the great video. I got the Alika style of the Maui Jim and wonder, why the lenses seems darker in the middle from the outside?

You are a great salesman. You have sold me a pair of Out Of, Gast and Masunaga sunglasses. The Masunagas are full acetate frames and the feeling against the skin is very special, soft and warm. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. The Out of glasses are great too, very well made and inexpensive.

What are your thoughts on the American Optical brand? Always wondered if they were of any quality!
I am interested about Tavat, but do not want go to plastics. Does Tavat offer glass lenses for best optical quality?
I came across Bentley eyewear made by Estede..What do you think about them?
Awesome video, I'm just in a frustrated spot because few of these offer prescription lenses, and I can't find any reviews on sunglass prescription lenses :/
We can add prescription lenses to just about anything, and we ship all over the world.
How do you know about lens and frame quality? Are you getting manufacturing specs(?) because I don't see those details when I'm looking at product pages online. Zeiss, for instance, makes glasses but I don't see them mention which zeiss lens they use.
What do you think about Finest Seven and Gentle Monster? 🤔
