With this, the product has been on a hot seat resurfacing the controversies around its environmental impact associated with the source of crude oil and its general safety of it. love this!!! can't wait to hear more. also great to know that i was right haha 😂 i was ready for you and dr wong to correct me and i was gonna have to be like, well shit, turns out i don't know what im talking about, but we're all good! lol.
i had forgotten about the history of where it came from though until you said it. i did NOT know that the sealant on fruits and such was petrolatum though!! i know you've done videos about retinol, but i think that would be a really interesting ingredient to learn its history and origins. this also may sounds strange, but the hydrocolloid patches that we all love so much...id love to know more about where they come from and it's environmental impact (as well as why some seem to work better/differently than others). i also think it'd be neat to know more about some items that are classics like the skii essence, shiseido products, neutrogena cleansers, la mers famously overpriced tub of fragrance, ponds cold cream, or noxzema. i also think there are certain ingredients that people often have questions about like lanolin or snail mucin that could be very interesting deep dives...especially historical uses!
id also LOVE to see the full video of your interview with dr wong. you both are fantastic and i've learned so much from you guys. whats even more incredible is that all the things you both have taught me has allowed me to help SO MANY patients as a medical esthetician. in turn, i work hard to educate my patients as well so that they can be more informed consumers, parents, and friends. the ripple effect from both your work is sincerely unfathomable.
sidenote...as someone who is NOT a dr, i would almost always say that i don't think it's my place to criticize professionals in their field...but dr youn really seems to feed the misinformation monster A LOT. and that's all the shade i have for today lol

I just wanted to add one point - natural alternatives usually also aren't free from fossil fuels, since processes like tilling, harvesting, purification, production of fertilisers, irrigation etc. are powered primarily by fossil fuels too. I've been seeing a lot of people say that they don't use petroleum jelly because they don't want their money to go to the oil industry, but unless the alternative has a fully traced LCA, it could well be worse...
Love this! I'm delighted to see people talking about the *truth* about Vaseline, because I'm so tired of seeing it demonized. I want a more ethical way to buy this thing my skin loves, but I can't find it from anyone who isn't a mega corporation: so-called "eco-conscious" brands and consumers have been taught to hate the stuff! Green washing at its finest.
I can't tell you how grateful I am that you're working to *educate* consumers about the science and doing life cycle analyses on products! It's so much harder to do that work than it is to simply follow the "petroleum bad, plants and glass good" narrative of "clean beauty."

Ironically it will come from a corporation anyway. it is produced in refineries as a by product and once clarified and purified, sold on to cosmetics and pharma companies. any small brand will just buy it from a reseller in smaller quantities. so of course pick the company that you want to support, but if it's just jelly, it will be pretty much the same thing regardless of packaging. it has such a long history of use and dermatologists have a good understanding of its properties, I agree it should not be demonized.
@@pohodicka01 I know. That's true for almost all ingredients, and I'm not naive enough to think otherwise.
But a small brand paying employees a fair wage, ethically sourcing their packaging, and attempting to minimize their own carbon footprint is going to be better than supporting Unilever (Vaseline brand).
I'm not just talking about pure Vaseline, though. I'm also talking about using it IN products. CeraVe Healing Ointment is one of my favorite products ever. Unfortunately, CeraVe is owned by L'Oreal, which Nestle has a large stake in. Nestle. One of the worst of the worst. The corporation so evil there's a quarter million people in a subreddit devoted to hating Nestle.
SkinFix's 911 ointment is the closest I've found to what I need, but it just doesn't work as well as CeraVe's for me.
I love the information included in this video. I have used vaseline for my feet and lips before but not anymore. It’s interesting the baseline of vaseline and the lack of information about petroleum for consumers. I am motivated by your hardwork Liah. I found your video from a content provider I follow, James Walsh. Your video was very helpful in my decision about whether to follow my dermatologists recommendation for slugging, using a film of Vaseline on my face, to heal my very chapped skin. I had been thinking that a plant based alternative would be just as good, but now I understand that it isn't. 🙏🏽🌟
Thanks for your comment! Natural alternatives have their pros and cons. But Vaseline works just as fine, if not better at acting as an occlusive

i think part of the appeal of vaseline besides skincare is that it can be used to lube up squeaky door hinges and other mechanical things around the house, so people buy it and think “i could use this for at least something, someday”. it’s considered a home essential

I really appreciate the nuanced look at petroleum jelly as a (by)product of a non renewable resource and how we might think about using it without just rejecting it with a knee-jerk reaction. If I may offer a different perspective, I sometimes choose not to use byproducts from an industry I disagree with because I don’t want to make that industry even more profitable.

I’m using often to “vaseline”.
Fun fact; Vaseline is also famous in Korea. In the military like army, navy and air force etc, if you had a scar on your body, applied vaseline. It works.
Not only using at medical point, also if you shaving beard or trimming your eyebrows or armpit etc, can using vaseline can protect your skin from blades.

Really interesting video! I haven’t been able to find any reputable sources of information about what happens to petroleum jelly after use like biodegradability, impact on waterways, etc. which is my main concern with using it. Did you come across any information on this during your research?

Very interesting and important info about the origin and production of petroleum jelly! However, the title/thumbnail are kind of misleading- there was no info about slugging or the effects of petroleum jelly as a facial skincare product? This was misleading. Or did I miss something? (English isn't my first language)
I do touch on the properties of Petroleum Jelly but for specific slugging instructions, I think Doctorly has a great video on it here on YT as well as Dr. Dray :)
This was a great video on basically what petroleum jelly is, but I wish it also went into long term effects on the skin (we didn’t really talk about slugging at all, which was the title..?) and post-use effects on the environment.
Personally I only use the aloe Vaseline lotion, I use that to soothe hives and burns and it really works, but regular Vaseline like out of the tub makes my skin incredibly dry! So I was wondering about the science of its skincare effects and how best to use it
Petroleum jelly, in and of itself, can’t really moisturize your skin. It can keep your body’s natural moisture from evaporating into the air, but that’s about it. That’s why products like Aquaphor have moisturizers added into them.
When I had a skin graft a couple of years ago, the only thing I was allowed to apply to it while healing was Vaseline. It protected my skin and kept it from drying out but didn’t actually interact with it. It just sat on top providing a protective layer.
@@mirandacoulter888 kinda makes sense why only petroleum jelly would make my skin dry then, I have health issues that make it so my body barely sweats or produces oils so my skin is already dry enough that it’ll flake if you rub it with no lotion on. There’s obviously no moisture to trap there! Haha

This was such a good video, I use vaseline as my moisturizer because I have eczema, especially on my face, which is super thin due to an overuse of topical steroids I used in the as a teenager. It’s interesting to listen in on the history and learn more about simple products that people commonly use.
I’d love to hear more about Vanicream products? My parents used them on me as a baby but as I got older, I became more drawn to try newer and more variety of products but risked my skin on ingredients I didn’t know of.
This past year, I realized simple is best and I use their conditioner, serborrheic dermatitis shampoo, and facial cleanser so I’d love to hear more on your guy’s end to what you find about this brand!

Vanicream is definitely a solid brand :) but I can see why we get tempted by newness and more aesthetic packaging. And vaseline would be so great for eczema!
Actually, Vanicream doesn’t work well on my eczema and makes it flare up. But eczema is pretty heavily dependent on allergens and my allergies could easily differ from yours
Use CeraVe Healing Ointment on face/neck and Vaseline on body. CHO has a smaller % of petrolatum and added hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, so excellent for thin + sensitive skin like the face, even your eyelids!(I smear Aquaphor over my eyelids every night instead of expensive eye creams.)
CeraVe moisturizing cream is also a great body moisturizer, and good to alternate between that and Vaseline. My 2 cents. I hope you heal 💛 eczema is the worst

After a long time, I bought another Vaseline. I realised they changed the formula and after a few use of the new vaseline, it didn't have same effect like previous vaseline. The content had had only petroleum jelly. Now, it has petroleum jelly, BHT and tocopheryl acetate. I don't understand why they changed it.
Petroleum jelly is a must have for my dry lips. Other types of lip balm work fine for me, but petroleum jelly is just dirt cheap in comparison. And since my lips get dry often, it makes more sense to buy a small tub of petroleum jelly instead of a small tube of lip balm.

While I don’t think petroleum jelly itself is bad, Vaseline is owned by Unilever which is a big conglomerate that has a huge carbon footprint. So, that’s why I purchase alternatives when I can’t but I know that’s not a choice everyone can make. I just wanted to point that out

Mineral Oil. Strangely, I’ve known for some time how Vaseline is made and have seen it as safe (though not to eat!). However, I’ve felt disturbed by the idea of mineral oil for decades, ever since discovering it’s the stuff marketed as Baby Oil. The notion of putting a petroleum by-product on an infant’s skin seems somehow wrong, but I’ve never really gotten around to investigating it.
I thought it will tackle the slugging, I guess there's a part 2 😊

I wouldn't even listen to a doctor saying that vaseline is bad, because it's been used for 150 years. 150 years vs. a doctor who's probably only lived maybe 40 years.. Remember that doctors doubted the guy who invented it. Education isn't everything; I'd have to hear his reasons for doubting it.
My aunt has been slugging for the last 30 years lol. She has dry skin and would put Vaseline on her face. Back then slugging wasn't even a term or a thing.

If you try to recyle the container and it's greasy still inside then it might contaminate the recycling. The amount of resources used to clean the container properly might not be cost or environmentally effect either.

I have concern about acne on face, back acne and all types of hair damage so I started watching everything thing and switch some products... But I don't know the cause of my hair fall and dandruff and I didn't find the video on back ance here in your channel and I only understand if you said it. I had back acne for 15 YES 15 years. The only thing that has worked is fragrance free cleanser (no actives) + benzoyl peroxide 5% Acnecide gel followed by any oil free salicylic moisturizer (Neutrogena Clear and Defend or Clean and Clear Dual Action Moisturizer or La Roche Effaclar). After 3 months, my back looks much better. Only scars now, and I'm okay with a few of those.
We now have that plastic jar in Sweden, but Vaseline used to be in a yellow metal canister.

So many things are carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic that I think at this point, we just have to stop demonizing them and learn about them so we can decide what things are worth it for us individually and moderate our exposure for our own lifestyles.
