The luxury fragrance market has been booming all over the world. The higher the price tag, the more coveted it is. Insert, Le Labo, Byredo, Tom Ford, Diptyque, and so much more. Despite its popularity, the perfume world is the least transparent as the formulation is protected as “trade secrets”. So unlike skincare products which are mandated to list all individual ingredients, with fragrance, you do not need to list the ingredients individually on the label. Instead, it may be listed simply as “Fragrance (Parfum)”. So even if it used 50 different fragrance ingredients or 1 fragrance ingredient, it will be listed as the same on the ingredient list, FRAGRANCE.
As the price tag rises, and so with the consciousness of consumers, there's an obvious question we can't help asking: is it worth it? How do we know what ingredients they’re using if it’s hiding behind the “Fragrance” bucket? Are these fragrances even sustainable? How are they even made? How should a conscious consumer shop for fragrances? In this episode of Rewind Explainer, we are aiming to find the answers.

Thank you Liah and the team for the time and energy you've put into this video so we can have a better understanding for the products we purchase. You efforts definitely make me a better consumer for my next purchase. And I'm so grateful that you share the brands that are more sustainable than most so I can learn more and be responsible to create the world/environment that would benefit us all. I'm grateful that we have people like you to produce contents like this and on that note, the more the merrier!

Very interesting video! Although, I think it would have been beneficial to address the health concerns that arise with synthetic fragrances in perfumes as this goes hand in hand with why people pick natural over synthetic.

i stopped buying perfume from the big brands a while ago. unfortunately in my country (and especially in my town) there isn't much of a selection outside of these, so i'm not able to actually smell the items before purchasing. buying scents i end up not liking is wasteful both for my bank account and for the environment, so i stopped that too. oh, how i wish all these niche brands could be sold here as well.

Don’t make videos about things that you have zero knowledge. That creates misunderstandings and controversy. Firstly, there’s no animalic perfume ingr in Chanel No.5 and most of those ingr aren’t allowed to use in modern perfumery anymore. Rose and sandalwood notes shown in those fragrances are actually created by ‘accords’ and not the particular unsustainable essential oil you quoted. Perfume noses can tell the popular Santal 33 is sharp and actually synthetic - not made of real sandalwood. When it comes to rose note, it’s usually mixed with something else like linalool, geranium.
