Tony had a fantastic array of shirts - two tones, Hawaiians and funky, almost Picasso-esque checks, but nothing beats his iconic bathrobe in my opinion
@@KasiaSopniewska please i beg you to make a video on the men. The leather jackets, Hawaiian shirts, loafers and suits are such an icon of the show. I myself brought 2 bowling shirts that look like something Tony would wear.
It's an incredibly diverse form of fashion tht highlights the early 2000s, but it's easy to see how Carmela would never wear what Adriana does, and Adriana would never wear Carmela's wardrobe either. The show was incredibly good at having the female characters stand on their own, even in their appearance, no matter the similarities. One of the keys to a great cinematic masterpiece is the wardrobe
You're so right! I also love that both Dr. Melfi and Carmela wear tailored suits, but their color palettes are so different: Carmela is all about her pretty pastels and Jennifer almost exclusively wears neutral beiges, greys, and blacks.
It’s funny because in retrospect Ariana’s style is considered stylish (similar to the main character in the Nanny) but at the time, these characters were specifically styled to look lowerclass and new money. A lot of their style staples (low rise pants, prints, heavy lip liner, etc) were meant to visually convey that they are new to money as a lot of these trends were still associated with hip hop artists and streetwear. These styles are now all lumped together as being iconically 90s but they were very clear low status symbols at the time, similar to high color wigs, nail art, and clear heels which used to be relegated to “ghetto” black girls but have now been adopted as mainstream late 2010s fashion touchstones
Loveeee cache! Got all my prom and going out dresses from there. It's a 90s/Y2k dream collection. Also a lot of their stuff was made with real silk. I legit rewore my prom dress from 2009 for a 2022 wedding after restoring it from Sandy water damage and it was in mint condition/flawless.
FINALLYYYYY, I love reading interviews of Juliet Polcsa, talking about how Paulie's actor styled himself (and his little wings), how she shopped where real mobsters shopped in Jersey. I love the leather jackets, little knit polos, bowling shirts, suspenders, track suits, opulent chains and bracelets that the men wear too. : ) Great video!
My favorite outfit that Carmela wore was a pink, Fila tracksuit with matching pink tennis shoes. She always looked so great and put together. I think that is one of the reasons Tony didnt want to leave her.
the Adriana outfit I love the most is when she wears green and white while standing outside of the airport with Chris in a neck brace. it's the most simple but it's one of her most hilarious moments. (the Roberto cavalli tiger dress is her most stunning tho I need that in my closet)
it's such a funny moment. Chris is all paranoid, asks her where did she park her car and Adriana is like 'am in a parking lot', lights up a cigarette, and doesn't give a damn
I always LOOVVEEDDD Ade’s outfit designs!!! Between her and Carmela, they always had the best clothes imo. That tiger/animal print satin dress was absolutely STUNNING!!! And not to mention Drea de Matteo is just drop dead gorgeous with a physique that could even pull off a brown paper bag!!!
For a show so popular I cannot think of a time people have talked about the costumes (asides from jokes) and I'm really glad this video was made. A lot of Greek ladies also rock the "mob wife" Carmella look too lmao
Adriana is one of the most well-written women in television history. I've watched the Sopranos a couple times over and seeing her in the early seasons gets harder and harder each time.
I thought Carmella's personal appearance reflected her character and motivations, not necessarily the trends of the time. In the earlier seasons, she was happy to indulge in the lifestyle provided by Tony, but as the show went on, she moved away from that indulgence, spending less money on hair, makeup and nails. As the possibility of life without Tony became more real, she became more practical in her choices, and economical in her personal life. She is seen less playing tennis and more studying for her real estate license, less getting her nails done and more squirrelling money into bank accounts and investments. I thought she got her haircut because short hair is easier to manage.
Absolutely LOVED this video!!! More of this kind of content for The Sopranos❤ I love how you said Adriana’s clothes were an armor to protect her personality 🙏🏽
Very innovative and perfectly analyzed! Amazing, and the first of its kind. And you nailed it, love going through that look book .. Carms jewelry... How did I overlook that collection, it rivals Liz Taylor's ❤😊 thank you for your hard work and vision!
When I was watching sopranos a few years ago, I went to Nordstrom to buy pin stripe baby blue Ralph Lauren boxers and a fresh pack of wife beaters and a silk robe. Last week I bought honeycombs and did not regret it.
How do I explain that I want to dress like Adriana, not in a trend-worshipping terminally TikTok-using “mob wife” way, but like someone who dresses as extravagantly and flamboyantly as they want and doesn’t care what anyone thinks and is effortlessly cool about it?
This was excellent, I love your videos. I grew up watching this show, but secretly because my parents would have flipped with all the violence and profanity. I always like Medow, the mob princess of the show. I loved Carmela's outfits, her big rings and bracelets. My mom was more of Liz Claiborne/Chanel bag type mom. Very 90s conservative. I once bought her a cheetah print top and she never wore it 😂 I was obsessed with everything leopard and cheetah at 16-20 (Guess clothes were my staples) and my parents forbidden me to wear certain clothes to family events. I didn't dress as revealing as Adrianna's attire. But if you have to wear a plaid skirt, blazer and tie everyday for school for a decade you go a little crazy on dress down day.
i remember while watching this show, every time any of the wives or adriana appeared on my screen, the only thing i could focus on was how good they were styled
I really love the clothes from Sopranos. Sadly The Shield didn't focus on clothes that much, lol the character Shane Vendrell wore those early 2000 jean fashion, Vic Mackey baggy pants lol. Vic also had tucked his shirts under the jeans, he was a raw beef bulk man. xD
@juturburg I use Epidemic Sound for my background jazz music. The song that plays in this video is Unimaginable by Nocturnal Spirits. I hope that helps xx
I love Sopranos commentary because I will never watch it - I’m too sensitive to violence - but I keep learning more about why it stands the test of time, and nobody talks about its dedication to fashion…could it be SATC’s impact??? Thank you for your service 🫡
@@KasiaSopniewska omg I could not stand BB not only for the horrible violence but just … f*cking over Skylar??? What was that character development??? From what I understand Sopranos treats their female characters with decency!
Just my opinion, but: I think the way The Sopranos was overlooked for its fashion had more to do with classism than SATC -- SATC was seen as experimental and daring, but that hinged on how its mains were bohemian artists, high-powered Manhattanites, or WASP princesses. But the characters of the Sopranos were nouveau riche from New Jersey, deemed crude and vulgar even in designer. The popularity of the mob wife aesthetic now has a least a little to do with how "guido" style went from endlessly mocked to emulated in the 2010s, but coming out of 90s minimalism the fashion scene didn't respect animal prints or sparkles or bold jewelry. Even SATC took a few years to get really colorful.
@@atlantictigeroh madone you are in for a treat if you think The Sopranos treats women with deceny. If you decide to watch it, you will be replused by one of the episodes. I know i was because it was literally brutal as hell. Even i, someone who can handle violence was taken afoot from it. Apart from that, i can say one thing about the violence. It's unrealistic. But it is a good show nonetheless. Have a great day.
Would love to see more Sopranos fashion breakdowns! I mean even Tony's shirts are iconic.

I think Ade’s dog is an honourable mention in her fashion. As much as she loved her, she complimented her look too
