      @@understitchYT That's really interesting! I think that demonstrates a lot of creativity, to be able to take a feature that can't be changed (like bad eyesight) and then incorporating it into your sense of style. Glasses that are used for the geek chic style, on the other hand, act more like a disposable costume accessory, mimicking the appearance of a functional item while being completely useless in and of itself, thus cheapening the whole look and undermining its own image of trying to look 'smart'.

      The anoying thing is just that it's now becoming more mainstream and trending. And with the circle of tik-tok trends, I fear that it wild in a couple of mounths, be once again seen as "outdated". This would once again make the "geeky look" looked down upon. I just wished that styles could be more indvidual and less trendy...

    What I enjoy the most about this style is it inherently does not pander to the male gaze AT ALL. I’m noticing that lately with trends.

      @jits8767 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +145

      i dont know, i dont want to shame anyone because i dont know their intentions but when i look at the last bit in the video that mentions bayonetta (who, while iconic, you have to admit is a video game character that is oversexualized) and the women featured who sport the bayonetta style glasses, i do feel there is an element of male gaze sex appeal. it reminds me of p*rnographic materials where teachers or librarians are featured as a kind of taboo subject. there is something interesting happening there with those glasses that make them very appealing in my opinion, the juxtaposition of glasses that should be inherently ugly but become so sensual when styled and modeled in the right way is fascinating and hard to look away from. so i dont wanna say this style is inherently sexualized or shame people for liking it, but i wouldnt say the male gaze is totally absent either.

    • @Snuffkin01
      @Snuffkin01 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

      @@jits8767 I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, I wouldn't say that this look is free of male gaze, starting with those glasses which are also an inspo from the oversexualized character (they CAN be their own thing just like they were before games which is just cool glasses but nowadays there are a lot of men who will look at them and say they are hot or sth like that, they wont pick any other glasses just those. I guess that games, media and p*orn ruined an image of them at least for me...). Tbh, if i had to picked one style that would be free of male gaze i would go for skate look or sometimes a hip hop look? Its just my opinion but I in skate look girls wear usually big shirts, loose jeans, socks, sports shoes, hats, long sleeves under tshirt and they look really comfy, they can personalize it and look girly or do the opposite, it seems to me that this is an outfit which doesnt really pander to the male gaze...And the same goes for the hip hop- it can still be comfy and baggy but you can add some part that is tight or revealing but it doesn't really restricts your movements

    • @maddygullotta2551
      @maddygullotta2551 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it really depends on how you style it and if you go for the baggy silhoutte or a tighter one.

    I was waiting for you to bring up the geek backpack rapper era in the 2010s! It mixed hip hop culture with geek chic with hipsterisms. It’s a style that was sported by so many black celebrities- catapulting polo, Tommy H, and Coach to popularity among younger people. It could be argued Kanye West was the originator, but OutKast also had a role with reclaiming the dandy look.

    To me, part of being a 'geek' is almost the category of geek one can be, like film geek, book geek, computer geek etc. though, I agree this probably came from the evolution of computers, and popularity of basing one's personality and style around their main interest/hobby, which I assumed is a modern evolution, but of course, Im sure there were those who did as such in the past, like the model train people of the 80s, space people of the 50s/60s and hippies of the 70s. It's just that now we all feel pigeonholed to brand ourselves a certain way in order to establish a personality on the internet well after our time in schools is over, and that feeds into it. These are just random thoughts, I havent strung them together really yet, but the video made me think, thank you

    I find it kind of difficult to have to deal with something that you were mocked during your teenage years to be mainstream now.
    It's quite difficult when you are the geek/nerd mocked to be brave enough to openly enjoy something.
    Not so geek chic, but seeing mainstream stores openly selling Anime/Manga stuff with no problem, like it's normal now to enjoy this kind of thing.

    As a guy that is VERY much rejected by all forms of society in every aspect, the growing acceptance of different styles and looks is appreciated as it opens up new doors for those less fortunate in the looks department. Society is very vain and shallow though, so even if you 'fit' into what's trendy you have to be the RIGHT kind to actually not get dirty looks.

    I do find it interesting how the geek style is being styled. Especially nowadays, I feel that some outfits are more like secretary style rather than actual geek style. The only thing that they have in common is the glasses. I would say that this is just business casual. Another thing that is a little icky for me is that throughout the decades nerds have been associated with being unattractive, just because their interests are computers, space and games. What about sexy nerds? There are really handsome and pretty people in this space, I am telling you. My partner, who is a medical physicist, is one of them. We went to his friend's wedding this June and he had this light blue summer suit on. A lot of his friends told him that he looked very good in it and one of them even said he looked like, he came out of a James Bond movie. It can´t be that sexy nerds are only associated with humanity studies and dark/light academia.
    Another thing I want to add is that nerds don´t have to be only associated with computers, space and games. I was in High School a so-called outsider nerd because I was interested in Japanese Fashion and some of the words I say in German are more used in Germany than in Austria. (My Stepdad is German) So, I got ostracized for it. I would say a nerd is someone who has interests that are not mainstream. And this can be anything.

    I'm surprised that you never mentioned the recently popular dark academia style throughout the whole video. In fact, it is very similar to this geek chic thing, but more polished, with matching items, and an air of sophistication to it -basically, it's geek chic rebranded for people who want to see themselves as intellectual, but also beautiful and sophisticated, yet not too sexy or trendy. Geek chic and dark academia are the same thing marketed towards different demographics whose values often clash. The difference is in details, but overall, you can pull off both styles using the same clothing items.

      i mention the academia aesthetic at 18:15, while there is some overlap, that style is based on the ivy league look of the 1950s which in turn inspired the preppy style of the 1980s (also mentioned in the video). those styles attempt to emulate the educated upper class not studious outcasts!

That they would not leave behind all their "nerdy" qualities but instead of being insecure and weak, they would be more confident about themselves without being arrogant and condescending to others for believing themselves superior.

    I swear I start liking a style and everyone else is like yeah sounds good. Now finding the "right" pieces is going to be so hard, but hey, can sell anything I'm not huge on fast on poshmark, I guess.
    To clarify, I'm more dark academia but really what is that if not slightly posh nerd😅

Also maybe doing videos on fashion from celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Melanie Martinez? Thanks if you read this!

    i’m honestly neutral that features like having a “masculine” face or glasses are in right now. i was horribly bullied as a child for “looking like a man” and wearing glasses, and it’s nice to be an adult knowing i was never actually ugly just because the way i looked wasn’t in trend. the one good thing about trends being so over saturated is that no one is able to bully anyone for how they look when everything is now a trend.

    I think for a while there Geek / Nerd fashion was confused for activist or librarian wear.
    There is also a subtle difference between Nerd and Geeks:
    - Nerds develop programming languages. ( Myself for example. )
    - Then there is hard science fiction fans. For those who know, you know.
    Yea there we go. The Matrix, also Akira and Neuromancer.

    I sort of feel that the new style is more of a costume version of geeks and how we remember them from childhood TV shows rather than what geeks actually wear... All my fellow nerds at my local game store wear band tees and fleece jackets and hiking shoes, not ties and shirts and cute sweater vests. It feels like fashion is dressing up and idealising nerds now lol
