    16:47 everybody loves how non-judgmental Samantha was towards Carrie's affair with Big, but I found her response totally lacking, especially since she knows how bad he is for her. When she found out, Charlotte's disgust and her sympathy for Natasha were more appropriate. Sometimes a true friend tells you what you don't want to hear.

    • @1bwash
      @1bwash ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I don't think Samantha was truly non-judgmental, it was almost like a PR response. Carrie was in the gutter and Samantha just withheld her real feelings, instead giving Carrie what she wanted. I think Samantha knows that Carrie is just wildly selfish and it wouldn't make a difference what you told her. So maybe your last remark nails it, in the moment Samantha wasn't being a real friend. She probably just thought it wasn't worth telling Carrie the truth and then having to be guilt tripped or manipulated by Carrie over it.

      @@1bwashwhy would Carrie guilt trip and manipulate her? Say what you will about Carrie but she knows she did wrong she just needs to know that her friends still love her despite her self destructive behavior.

    • @Facetterdk
      @Facetterdk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Exactly! A friend who just tells you what you want to hear , at the end of the day, is not the best friend. When Samantha says judging is not her style, the true answer would be that she has no problems with people being unfaithful, because she herself practices a complete free sexual lifestyle with many partners at the same time, so scolding Carrie for cheating on Adidan with her married ex would be out of Samantha's character. Samantha is as judgemental as everybody else when it comes to things in contrast to her life style and outlook. For instance, she very often judges Charlotte for her more traditinal life wishes.

      Samantha understands that Big is extremely attractive for Carry because of his rich lifestyle. Carry looks for a man not with a drama but a party socialite with funds to such a lifestyle. All the girls have a passion for a comfortable life full of brands and mostly get it in different ways: Charlotte married into money, Miranda works her ass of, Samantha uses her sexual power in career (not like Italian girl with fluffy shoes, but still we see examples like redemption through new affair after being banned for countless affairs with married man, calls to exes for job interview etc.). Basically we see how Carrie tries all the types of men but falls hardly for a prince out of her childhood fairytales: rich, handsome, no financial struggles, he has a very light appealing aura for Carrie - old money, no problems. And Aidan is a self made with his own hand: furniture, house, he builds his happiness with his own hands. But Carry hates that lifestyle: cooking, cleaning etc. her childhood really did something to her

      @katkit1479 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is why I love Charlotte and Miranda! They usually spoke out when something terrible happened whereas Samantha closed her eyes on it all. Some things, like breaking up a marriage or cheating on your boyfriend are wrong and should be condemned by your friends.

    Now that I think about it, Natasha's pink dress is a similar shade of pink that Carrie wore when Big told her he was engaged and she made a scene in the restaurant. Except Natasha's dress is a little bit more classy and old school, while Carrie's dress was more modern and girly, even though she's older. Carrie made a scene like a child would, while Natasha's response was very mature and drama-free. The fashion aligned with their opposite personalities.

    I really don’t like the “Carrie ruined Natasha’s marriage” narrative. I mean THE MAN IS THE PROBLEM. It’s not Carrie, who is married to Natasha, and most certainly she didn’t swear love and faithfulness to her at the alter. It’s the man, who cheated. So it’s him, who ruined the marriage (if it ever was one tho)

      Exactly… And a man that wants to cheat, is going to cheat. If it wasn’t Carrie, it would have been someone else. This is why I hate the movies so much. Big and Carrie marrying just doesn’t make sense. Carrie was his side chick and this girl he dated and used to have fun with… That kind of relationship never results in marriage. To answer your question about why Samantha tolerated Charlotte: Despite Charlottes judging, she loves all 3 women. Does she say mean things? Yes, but so do all of them. Lets not pretend like Samantha doesn’t make sly comments about Charlotte for her desire to lead traditional lifestyle. And that’s okay. It’s natural to butt heads and fight with friends that have opposite opinions. Aside from the twos disagreements, they both saw the good in each other. Charlotte cares for her friends, shows up for them even when it’s hard (example: showing up for Brady after her miscarriage), and is a beacon of optimism in a group full of pessimistic and realistic women. Samantha probably values those aspects of Charlotte, and that’s why she stays friends with her despite her judging.

      @@KasiaSopniewska I think your commentary is spot on in all aspects. Love your perspective with the +2020 filter. This remains one of my favourite shows as I felt like I still had my time with my girls even when I moved to the other side of the world. I was at the end of my teens when it started and it was groundbreaking in so many ways when it came out, especially the way women spoke to each other about sex and sexuality, gender dynamics, roles & expectations and even the class and race aspects. I have to say that I giggled when you said you 'Read that in the early 2000s that SATC was one of the first shows to use vulgar words'. Our age gap is blindingly obvious with that statement. Yes as you say some aspects Aged.Like.Milk. But also YES to SATC being shocking and groundbreaking, because if they didn't do all that the way the did, what you see on TV nowadays would not be standing on their shoulders in trainers instead of Manolos because 'back in my heyday' before social media made everything acceptable, SATC made it acceptable for women to talk, share, be honest, authentic, empowered and explore outside of the 'road expected to travel' for women +30&40 in life, sex and relationships. Thank god for all of them and god bless the 2000 versions of Miranda and Samantha. Because humans evolve, we don't stay in time capsules, but I am so happy for the full series run and I loved the first movie too. That is a time capsule I will cherish in my DVD box set (anyone else still have hers even though I no longer have a DVD player?). Wish they had stopped right there with the show even though a better written, less forced version of life in their 50s could have been equally groundbreaking. Alas that's not what we got *sigh* & + *shake my head in dismay*. We got the 'Aged.Like.Milk' version AJLT. YUCK!

I also think he's funny and smooth talking, my favourite moment is the one right before he tells her he needs a heart procedure, "let's fight and then we can make up". At the end, her biggest problem is really choosing which pair of Manolos to wear, and she doesn't even appreciate that. I can go on.

    I remember when this season premiered I was in my own toxic relationship with my version of Big. I understood it then and even more so now with the benefit of hindsight. There's a feeling of I don't care who Big is with now married or not. I was here before you and I will be here after you... which she was rather you think that's good or not it's true.
    I like Aiden however I never dug the whole cigarette issue. I just don't like when any stipulations are put on someone in a relationship. If you don't do.....I won't be with you. It's controlling and a red flag. I believe they used cigarettes as Aiden's stipulation really bc they wanted to faze out Carrie being a smoker bc the tide was changing drastically for main protagonists being smokers. Due to the fear of being bad role models for young women. But why couldn't Carrie make her own choice in wanting to become more healthy. It's so cliche to have her do it for a man. I too was in my own Mr. Big relationship at the same time as the show. I guess our own experiences led to our understanding of Carrie’s situation. I remember at that time, I couldn’t get away from them. It was like a drug. Even until this day, the desire, passion, intensity in that toxic relationship, has never been matched. A lot of what Carrie and Big went through, we went through. Except we never ended up together. He also passed the same year as the Mr. Big character in JLT.

    I think the problem I have with Carrie is that she doesn’t really grow or learn from her mistakes. She had an affair… and then what? What is she supposed to take away from it? Cause she still invited Big over after Aidan graciously took her back. If she just makes the same mistakes, what’s the point? It’s not that she makes mistakes, it’s that she learns nothing from them. And when she’s surrounded by characters like Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha, who do make mistakes and grow from them, it renders her uninteresting in my mind. At least, not as interesting as the other characters.

      I don't think you are giving the context of that episode enoungh consideration. Carrie was reluctant at first but eventually allowed Big to see her at Aiden's cabin after hearing how upset he was. She was worried about him and he needed a friend. Despite everything that happened she can't just switch off her feelings and stop caring about Big. That's one thing that Carrie does show realistically.
      The thing with Big and Carrie is they do genuinely care for each other. There is a spark, chemistry and bond. They just didn't know how to be in a relationship together. Neither were mature enough for a serious relationship.

    Trey and Charlotte were meant to meet each other but not for romantic reasons. Charlotte started to changed her rigid dating ways and Trey grew a backbone and stood up to his mother when she tried to intervene with Charolette getting the apartment that TREY gave her. The fact that he showed up for the magazine shoot showed that he wasn’t a bad person. Basically via their not compatible marriage they were able to start growing. My heart broke for Trey because he revealed that his mother didn’t raise him, it was his nanny. So him always pleasing his mother and not setting boundaries wasn’t necessarily his fault; he was getting the attention he should’ve gotten growing up and didn’t know how to act. People want to think rich kids have it all but the reality is, is that those kids probably lack the very most important thing: which is healthy love and attention from their parents. A nanny shouldn’t be raising someone else’s child and not to mention, that nanny probably has children of their own.
    They divorced but they weren’t on bad terms at all which is very ideal so at least Charolette got an ideal SOMETHING from her marriage lol.

    I've heared in a podcast (I don't remember which one though) that the dior galiano paper print dress was allegedly the most expensive piece of clothing the production had ever got for the show (Patricia Field saw it in the dior's boutique window and she bought it of the rack for SJP).

I wouldn’t be surprised if the newspaper print one was even more expensive as it recently sold for over 15k. But at the same time, maybe the podcast got it wrong?

    Is it that shocking to question dating a bisexual man? Surely we have the right to wonder if that’s right for us without passing judgement on the other person. A gay man might also have an issue if his partner is bisexual. Being truly open and accepting if people is being honest about how you feel without shaming someone else for who they are. I also think the Samantha story line was based on a very jealous sister and if I am not mistaken based on a real story. Todays audiences read too much into it. In a later season Miranda dates a black doctor and it’s not even a thing. I find And Just like that more racist with it’s ridiculous self consciousness and awkwardness.

Samantha loves Carrie and likes Miranda, so she accepts Charlotte as a by-product of those friendships. I love this video. You are truly passionate about fashion and thanks for having said that the newspaper dress by Galliano was inspired by Schiapparelli. Back to satc I don't blame Carrie for her flaws or even cheating on Aidan. As you said she was addicted to Big, she seemed very sorry to hurt Aidan. She's a anti-heroine and she could be relatable and very annoying. But what I don't like is she never learns from her mistakes. Like she took Aidan back to ditch him again, she complained about Big yet is addicted to the drama. Charlotte has her flaws but she does learn from her mistakes. She was brave enough to end the marriage with Trey, she listened to her heart when she dated Harry. Miranda is my favorite she's the most real to me. She's the only one you see really struggling with guys or just chilling on her flat. I agree with you Steve is a nice guy but his immaturity is really annoying.

However, I do have a keen eye for cinematography and thought I'd recall your attention to the elevator scene where the Carrie/Big affair starts. Though you may think the content of the scene is disturbing, and i'm sure many would agree, from a cinematographer perspective it is a stunning accomplishment in capturing the subject moving through a non static environment in a relatively fast paced scene. All of this is done in one, spectacular, sweeping, panning, 360 orbital SINGLE SHOT, with no cuts and no edits. It is probably the height of this series camera work, and one I always refer to as a genuine accomplishment of this show.

    I just rewatched the show. And I noticed how incredibly Carrie was changing season by season. For first 3 seasons she was absolutely like a low-class person and then we are observing her transformation to first class lady. I thought that we were girls has the pretty much similar experience - the shifting from 20’s to mid 30’s

    I've never understood why they showed Samantha having oral s.x without protection and getting to the happy ending, with a random. That was ludicrous even then, obviously.

    4:07 Like what happens to Charlotte xD
    So symbolically this skirt is a symbol of who she is and the relationship she is about to be in.
    I like the skirt yet there is something almost too perfect about it.

    Charlotte is the best character. The most realistic and actually also the kindest and most complex. And having just asminimum of ethic standards does not make you rigid or prude.

    Samantha is derogatory when it comes to Charlotte's dreams. Why is is always portrayed as being the other waty around.

    Carrie might have moments where anyone can relate to her on the human level but at the end of the day I just think she’s such an awful person. If she were a friend of mine, well she wouldn’t be. I just can’t stand all of her personality but other than that like yeah she can be relatable
