I think that makes sense because Sam and Charlotte's narrative arcs in the show reflect each other's values (Sam finds a lot of value in a longer term relationship and being vulnerable, and Charlotte learns with both Trey and Harry how important a strong sexual connection is). It's more satisfying in a story to explore those two conflicting parts in chronological order, but in real life it's pretty common to live with the conflicting parts at the same time.
It’s so refreshing to find a video essay about SATC that appreciates the show and doesn’t tell me why I shouldn’t like it and why it’s oh so problematic.
I remember reading the scanned copies of the actual columns on the internet MANY years ago. I was surprised at the critics the show got for portraying women liberally dating. Most people didn't know the characters had to get diluted for tv. Also I remember the Carrie in the columns was a lot more unlikeable than the TV version.
So Charlotte was originally the English woman in the pilot who came to New York.. interesting. I like that the show never portrayed Sam as longing for a boyfriend but there were times when she felt vulnerable and hurt by men like when Dominic got back with his icelandic supermodel wife, the bar owner ghosted her at dinner and when she was sick and couldn't get someone to fix her curtain rail. I'm a die hard SATC fan and love these videos Kasia, keep them coming!
actually, Charlotte and that English woman from the pilot episode were different characters. it’s easy to mix them up with all the introductions in the early episodes.
Learning Samantha's character actually being sad and lonely makes me feel a bit more hopeless for some reason. The way she is in the show is so empowering and important culturally.
Its funny how the "real" Charlotte is quoted saying how you need to be a complete bitch to sleep like a man, b/c in the show, fast forward to when Charlotte starts sleeping with Harry, that's exactly what Anthony says to HER when advising on how to keep their whole situationship physical.
When I first started watching Sex and the City I was so excited to learn that is was based on a book. So I ran as quickly as I could to the book store... I was sooooo disappointed! The book was so confusing and boring, the only link to the HBO show was the names of the main characters, should I say they were completely different people. I gave up after couple of chapters... Never touched that book ever since
I read somewhere that even Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha, didn't get through the book when she was offered the role. She stopped reading after a few chapters!
I'm empty from my SATC binge and I love all your videos! Watching your walkthrough feels like I'm rewatching the show, but this time with a friend. Anyways, I keep up the great content!
I totally understand that feeling of emptiness after finishing a show like SATC. it's like saying goodbye to good friends! i'm thrilled to hear that my videos can bring a bit of that magic back for you xx
@@KasiaSopniewskaI used to watch the show with my grandma. I watch reruns every now and then and it brings the memories of those happy times when we had fun together. Thank you for your work. Happy belated ❤
If one of the characters had been British it would have been pretty interesting to explore cultural differences. But I don’t know if the writers would have managed that well.
I did enjoy the book! It was interesting to learn about the dating lives of these fabulous upscale New Yorkers. I do have to separate it from the show somewhat and see it as its own thing but it has its merits.
Sam in the book was Carrie's new best friend in Just like that then! She even needed distance from Carrie when they were planning on going to the Hamptons together and Carrie had started a relationship with Adam again
You know I think they did show Samantha being lonely at times and wanting more, but she had to keep appearances. That's why the Richard thing happened and her other boyfriend who broke her heart, plus that guy from season 1 she said she was in kove with.
I'm so glad that the series really changed the characters than how they are in the book. I loved that Charlotte was the hopeless romantic who got her happy ending. And I'm glad that Samantha was independent and true to herself; choosing to be with herself than being engulfed by a man (she sounded pathetic in the book). Sam had her moments too, but she always, always, knew how to make herself happy.
As a huge fan of the show, I bought the books to read. ALL of them, including the Carrie Diaries. It was UNBEARABLE. Candace is a terrible writer, I have no idea how she was "qualified" to do a column at all. Its a miracle the people at HBO saw anything there , let alone created a culture shifting show like they did. I'm serious. The books are horrendously bad, and I'm a really patient person who loves to get lost in a book. These were shockingly bad.
As someone who is born and raised in New Haven Connecticut I’m offended New Haven Connecticut is an urban area Yale University is probably the only place where the wealthy people matriculate the rest of us on Foodstamps and low income housing and it’s been that way since the 80s and probably even before that so I don’t know what part of New Haven The character of Charlotte could’ve grown up in but it wasn’t a New Haven maybe it was Greenwich LO Al
My immediate thought was “She’s probably a professor’s kid,” because the three well-off people I know who were raised in New Haven proper are all children of Yale professors.
i remember reading the book before i watched the show and i wasn't really into it. it was something to read on an airplane ride. loved the show though!
i get where you're coming from! sometimes the format really makes a difference. i heard that the audiobook version narriated by cynthia nixon is pretty good
So, in the book version, Charlotte was a Samantha and Samantha was a Charlotte! 😅
isn't that crazy?

Don't know whether to find that better or worse....
It’s so refreshing to find a video essay about SATC that appreciates the show and doesn’t tell me why I shouldn’t like it and why it’s oh so problematic.
It's actually pretty compelling how HBO took such a gritty book and turned into something so palpable.

I meant that it's like original Charlotte from the booked seemed like the English lady from the pilot episode.
Wow that’s so cool. I’m definitely going to read it now! I have the book One Fifth Avenue, I will start with Sex and the City though
In the first season Sam matched more the book version

I love your SATC research!! Always well written and everything I need to know ❤
Glad you enjoy it! xx
thank god you made this bc the book was like unreadable to me. i could NOT get into the sex and the city or lipstick jungle books at all
i have yet to read lipstick jungle, but i agree bushnell has a very *specific* writing style

It’s been about 20 years since I read the book, but I remember Amalita Amalfi having a child and a much bigger role.
yes! Amalita was such a fun character. i wish she appeared in more episodes

Such a good & in depth video. I love these! So excited to see the one dedicated to Carrie! Keep up the fab work! 😘
i'm on the sixth season of the show at the moment and this video upload came right on time. can't wait for your video about carrie / candace bushnell!
where are you in the sixth season? are you at the part with Jack Berger, or have you reached the episodes with the Russian?

Fascinated by Sam created by Bushnell.
Happpy birthday 🥳 🎉🌷
