He used to come and sing every year outside my work. He had a lovely voice, and even though it wasn’t my type of music, I didn’t mind listening for a few days a year. He was a very polite, friendly person, and was a true gentleman RIP Don Estelle xx
Met the entire cast in I977 when they filmed at Imperial War museum in Duxford,my brother and I have all their autographs and I have a pic of my brother and I with the late great Windsor Davies
‘It ain’t half hot mum’ was another brilliant comedy by Jimmy Perry & David Croft who Co-wrote so many first class comedies with a first class cast and putting Don Estelle together with Windsor Davies was inspired! When they were together in a scene and Windsor’s Sergeant Major character was barking in Don’s ear, it often looked as though Don was fighting to hold in the laughter. I suspect that show was Don’s glory days as it was sad to see him in the late 1980’s stood behind a trestle table in Woolworths in Luton trying to sell his CD’s. I often saw him there but can’t recall seeing anyone buy a CD. He struck me as being a proud but sad figure doing his best to make ends meet after those heady days of It Ain’t Half Hot. Like so many of our greatest entertainers who fall out of favour with TV producers etc, Don deserved better. R.I.P Don and thanks for the laughter and allowing us to hear that fabulous singing voice.
He had a fabulous singing voice, loved him in it ain't half hot mum,RIP Don,wish family would take care of his grave bless him,so sad to see no flowers, always makes me feel sad as if he's no longer remembered, thank you 😊 Paul as usual respect shown, stay safe xxxxx
Absolutely loved his voice. I remember seeing him outside Woolworths in Bridlington, I was star struck and bought a Christmas cassette tape and he signed it for me, I still have it. Such a polite and soft spoken gentleman 😔
I also loved It ain’t half hot mum. Many years ago I was walking through Coopers Square in Burton on Trent and I heard this beautiful voice singing and we were very pleased to see the man himself…Don Estelle! He had been invited to come to our town, and he brought cds of his and Windsor Davis songs…people flocked to see him. I went up and told him what a beautiful voice he had and how It ain’t half hot mum used to cheer me up. He seemed a really nice and genuine person,Bless him. Thanks for this one Paul, your mate Aquaman is far better looking than the lead man in the film!
I loved 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' not just because it was a funny sitcom - but because my grandad was a serving soldier in Burma, I remember watching it with him (he taught us how to count in Burmese)... he received the Burma Star. My Grandad was 6ft 3 and was known as 'titch' - he would have made a great double act with lofty. Happy memories of family TV comedy times and joyous memories. RIP Don 'Lofty' Estelle.
So you came to Rochdale....Nice one. Used to see him round town, always very pleasant. Nice memorial for him and thank you Paul for visiting Rochdale, sorry it was raining xxxx
Whispering Grass reminds me of a hot summer as a kid, because we had the drought in ‘76, but ‘75 was also a hot one. Great tv show, wouldn’t get made now of course
Yes 1975 was a another fantastic summer I remember it well Shirley. Roll on 76 even a longer summer and not a mention of Climate change. We just enjoyed it.
@@brianfearn4246 the joys of being a kid, summers that seemed to last forever and you didn’t worry why, you’re right Brian, you did just enjoy them, those were the days😔. I’m glad I’m not a child of today!
I remember seeing Don with CD's on the high street with a trestle table.........very sad........great artist.....great voice.....top respectable job sir!
Don Estelle, what a fantastic voice, so entertaining in It ain't arf hot mum,a natural partnership with Windsor.A much missed and much loved star.God bless you Don.❤
I used to love watching it ain't half hot mum and the rapport between himself and Windsor Davis but never knew how far back their relationship went and sadly didn't realise how ill he became. Thank you for your ever compassion and respect
Hi paul, we met don estelle years ago when we were kids on holiday in bridlington. He was in woolworths signing his latest album, he was a nice fella from what i can remember.
Aw, that was so sad to learn he needed a liver transplant, but was too weak to have the surgery. Because he was almost pocket sized and a lovely man you always worried someone might put upon him, but despite Windsors loud voice in the show, it was just good acting by them both, as they were obviously good mates. I thought he had the most wonderful voice, and it’s s great shame he wasn’t recognised more for that at the time. I know Rochdale and Darwin..my son lived at the latter while working up North for a bit, so it’s nice to recognise places for a change. Thanks so much for paying respects on our behalf Paul, bless you. Love Helen in NFK 🙋♀️🥰😻🦋🦋🦋
Happy to say i met Don when he was promoting one of his CD’s, back in the 80’s! nice bloke and happy to chat and have photos taken He was even wearing his pith helmet and khakis Absolutely love Ain’t arf hot mum Lovely boy lovely boy
Wow, thanks for this. I love Don Estelle and grew up listening to his wonderful voice on "It Ain't Half Hot, Mum". Great to also see so many fans in the comments.
I used to love the programme, but was totally shocked the first time I heard him sing on Top of the Pops! Great voice. Thanks for sharing Paul. Reckon that other bloke was building his part though! 😉😁👍🏻
i remember walking through Boston's woolworth store and seeing him singing in there while promoting his lp....was too shy to go up to him so listened for a while all starstruck and then moved on ,i believe he was staying in a care home nearby
I watched It ain't half hot mum with my dad every week and I thought he was great in it but when I heard him sing Whispering grass it blew me away! I never knew he could sing like that..even though he was part of the concert party in the show lol. B.O.BOYS boys to entertain you!! Loved it. Rip Don xx
Aww loved Don Estelle in it ain’t half hot mum.He had such a wonderful voice,I could not believe how lovely his voice was,the first time I heard it.Another wonderful actor from my childhood gone.Thankyou Paul,I love hearing all their stories you tell of their lives.❤️❤️❤️
Thankyou Paul. That was a lovely video as usual. Whispering Grass a beautiful song I loved it. You are very caring towards these long ago entertainers. Sadly missed but you always have time to remember them Thankyou Paul. ❤
I have fond childhood memories of watching It Ain't Half Hot Mum. Thanks for this respectful tribute to atalented man. Going by the comments, no one ever had abad word to say about him. Never knew about his double act with Windsor Davies.
How Don Estelle kept his face straight with Windsor Davies when singing there song must of been so hard bless him. Felt about sad that the grave doesn't have any flowers 💐 for him but another good video Paul x
Rest In Peace, my whispering grass lofty, Don Estelle. Windsor Davis catch phrases what is you, a nance?? You got a fine pair of shoulders, show em off !! And the end credits to it ain't half hot mum (which I have as a box set of the series) land of hope and glory, father of the free Windsor Davis suddenly shouts" shut up!!" Happy times. The opening credits, the cabaret song. Here's the gang for the boys are here, the boys to entertain you
I saw him in Yarmouth, not in a theatre but he had a stall in the moll selling cassetes of his music, I couldn't believe it, someone with such a beautiful voice was forced to sell his music this way !
Loved the video of don Estelle. I came from Rochdale and knew where he lived He lived in a flats called the seven sisters . And often seen Windsor Davis going to his flat. So thank you for the Video brought back memories 🙂
Another good video Paul. I liked watching Don Estelle and Winsor Davies in 'It ain't half not Mum' he had lovely singing voice. Taken too early.Rest in Peace Don.
Sing Lofty! What a lovely video Paul as always I have a lovely memory to share, when I worked for Top Rank Bingo as a caller back in the 80s at The Top Rank ex RITZ Cinema Birkenhead we had Don Estelle come and do a Show for us as Lofty of course and that wonderful singing voice will never forget him what a genuine lovely humble man he was. We could not get him off at the end, they wanted him to sing all night! We will not see his likes again we still have his lovely singing voice to listen to on CD Thanks Don R.I.P. - Mark - Wallasey Wirral - 20/8/22
Small of stature but big on talent 👏 I heartily recommend buying the IAAHM box set because you ain't gonna see it on TV any time for the foreseeable future. TH-cam only shows bits and pieces but you really need to see the whole story to appreciate Don's skills as an actor and a singer. Such a beautiful voice and a genuine gentleman.
What Don Estelle lacked in height, he made up for in his talent: alongside his co-stars Windsor Davies and Melvyn Hayes, he was extremely funny in 'It ain't half hot, Mum' and had a beautiful tenor voice. I hadn't realised that he was so ill before he died.
Loved that programme the likes of which we will never be able to produce or watch on mainstream TV again . A tongue in cheek view of the writers and producers who had came through the second world war which is now deemed deeply offensive to many groups . I can't change that I my childhood was spent watching these shows with my parents , if they laughed I would laugh . Sign of the times . Keep up the good work Paul . Love watching these "Celebrities" from the past being given some air time .🙏
