I have 2 Model 12s, one with hexagonal barrel, and one identical to the one in this video. The first belonged to my great uncle, and is in rather rough, but usable condition, though at some point, probably in the 1920s, the barrel was shortened by about 6 inches. The other, which a family friend gave me when I was 7 years old, in 1956 is still quite nice. He'd had it for many years.
Hello, I use a product called Velvet Oil #200. This is a high quality wood oil that works well on guns. I am purposely a bit vague as the process took me several years to figure out as it’s a mixture of sand paper, oil and sometimes leaving wet sanded mixture on wood and sometimes not. Found that it takes a keen eye and just experience. When I’m done the wood is perfectly smooth and beautiful slightly matte finish. Also the hand rub out technique is not what I would have though when I started and can be frustrating to get right. If you want a oil glass finish you can spray thin layers of true oil, takes many, and then gently wet sand/buff out with 600 grit to 1500 grit, then to pumice/rottenstone all after a few weeks of drying. Looks amazing but is too much work for my schedule and one thousandths too much off and you head back to the sprayer.
I got the same model, which appears to not have the "button" for releasing the pump action? All the other Rem 12 videos show a button which is not on mine or yours. How do you remove the wood fore grip? I loosened the screws but it wouldn't slide off.
Yes some have some not. The wood still comes off the same. Once both screws out just lightly tap it towards the front of the gun with a rubber or plastic hammer. It’s probably just stuck.

Hi, I just picked up. 1914 Remington 12 . It is missing the complete bolt assembly. I think it had the flat firing pin style. Can you tell me if that is correct or if either will function ? Thanks
I remove the grommet with the screw but you can take a punch and drive the screw out past the small sliver of metal holding it in. It can be hard to get back in so be careful. I put the grommet together with metal sliver in slot then push the screw in all together until seated.
I have a remington model 12 but its marked with the "remington special" cartridge (.22 WRF) . Is there any way to make a conversion to the more cheap and easy to find .22LR?
Hello Alan. The challenge between the 2 rounds is that the WRF is a bigger chamber than a 22LR. Since we can’t put metal back to fill in the space, the only safe way to convert your gun is to reline the barrel and rechamber for 22LR. Alternatively, if you can find a Remington 22LR barrel you might be able to screw that in and go. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried this so not 100 percent sure the thread is the same or head spacing will be correct. Maybe you can search the internet to see. Feel free to call with any further questions. 970-390-3342 CJ
@@coloradogunrestorations7248 Thank you for your kind response. Maybe I should try that option, there's a octagon barrel for that particular model (new reproduction) in gun parts corp. If so, do I need to consider any mod to the cartridge loading mechanism?
Hello Alan. If you could email direct at rockymountainguns1@gmail.com we can further discuss your project. That would be easier for me to communicate. Thank you. CJ
The receiver was case color hardened. When you drop the metal in ice cold water at a temp of almost 1500 degrees the bone charcoal often burns into the metal. I do sand with a metal flat edge and there was no pitting prior to case coloring. I have found reducing the bone charcoal to a magic percentage does prevent this.
Hello. I don't have any parts for a Remington 72A in house but can help find as I have a lot of contacts when needed. Please visit www.coloradogunrestorations.com and fill out service request and I'll get back to you. CJ

I plan on purchasing a Remington Model 12 with an octagonal barrel. What is the ball park cost for a full restoration?
Hello Rich. Octagons take a lot of work to prep so normally a full restoration runs about $800-$900 depending on the metal condition
Great work! What finish did you use on the stock. I didn't catch it in the video. Thanks!
