    As a gunsmith who owns both older and newer pythons and older Colt Snakes and worked on a pile especially older ones I would advise anyone wanting a python to buy a newer one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them at all as well as has areas corrected. Plus any gunsmith/rifle builder will tell you machining has advanced greatly over the last 30years

    Unlike 95% of the people who post videos, I actually own a 2017 New Cobra, 2020 New Python and a 2021 New Anaconda. As of today, there have been NO ISSUES, period. The internal design and DA trigger is much improved over the original series. A lot smoother and zero stacking. The new Colt revolvers are much stronger than the originals. Colt has a test Python model with over 70,000 cycles and 14,000 maximum power rounds with no stress issues. The original Python would never handle that abuse, it would be a scrapped paperweight. The stacking and timing issues are long gone. Colt/CZ has not released a high polished blued because - 1.) The current model is stainless not carbon steel. 2.) The MSRP is already $1,500. Are you going to pay that much extra for the blued finish? I don't know why the lack of blued finish was even mentioned in this video because Colt directly said at Shot Show 2020, and several other times, additional finishes and different barrel lengths will be added in the future. Due to the high cost and labor, the high polish blued will probably be a Custom Shop option only. Are the new revolvers perfect? No. Are there things I wish Colt would do differently? Yes. A lot of people had to go decades with little to no chance of buying one and now they are back. People screamed for years to bring back the snakes, so Colt finally listened to their customers. The guns are not for everyone, but at least we have the option to buy a new one, which was a total "NO-GO" for decades earlier. Just my opinion.

      Appreciate the feedback. I do these videos just as much for intelligent comments and opportunities for myself and other viewers to learn as much as anything else. I would likely buy one of those models you listed used from someone I trusted then brand new and have the possibility of dealing with what has become a fairly ineffective organization from a customer service standpoint.

      Yes I agree with most of your points here. IMO, the new Python action is the best DA revolver action on the market today in a production, mass produced gun. It combines the best aspects of the old Colt V-spring, the Mark III, and the S&W actions. The DA is better. The SA is NOT better, in fact its worse, but that can be fixed. It's better than any modern S&W product in my opinion, and it doesn't have the god awful keylock or sleeved barrels.

    • @smithn.wesson495
      @smithn.wesson495 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@66smithra I agree with the SA not being at its full potential either. Part of the reason for the change in the SA trigger was Colt had to design the revolvers to pass strict safety drop requirements to be allowed on the approved California and Massachusetts rosters. Of course, unless you work at Colt there is no way to know if that is the real reason or not. A good trigger job can obtain a 3 to 3.5 lb SA trigger on the New Cobra, New Python and New Anaconda models, if you can find the right person to work on these Colts.👍🏻😊

    • @66smithra
      @66smithra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@smithn.wesson495 Yeah I don't know if I buy that because the gun has a transfer bar (and in the old design a positive rebounding hammer with a hammer block). You could put a 12 oz trigger job on it and drop it off the Empire State Building and it's still not going to accidentally fire without holding the trigger back.

    When I turned 21 years old I bought a 6" stainless Python for $600. It was sold as used but whoever bought it new must not have ever fired it and it appeared in new condition to me. That was over 25 years ago and I still have it. Even though it was made in the later CNC machined years it is incredibly crafted. I will part with it when I stop breathing.

    For a guy who did not, and would not buy a new Python, why would your opinion matter ? I own many old Pythons, 18 in fact, and when the new guns arrived, I snapped up the first I saw. I now have 2 of each length, and regularly shoot (2-3/week) the 4.25 and 6” models. Of the older models, I have 4 that go to the range along with the new Pythons. I’d estimate I have several thousand rounds fired from each new model and they are, in my opinion, much better shooters than any of my older guns. While the older Python had a beautifully smooth trigger, after a bit of break in, the newer guns perform much better. Fit and finish is excellent although I do wish I could get one blued. Don’t listen to someone who won’t even try the gun before declaring it “unworthy,” as it just proves how narrow minded some egocentric self “experts” can be.

I have the new Anaconda and the new colt, both awesome revolvers, and I will get the blued Python too, when they are in the stores and the prizes have come down to msrp. I know a lot of guys had problems, I get it. Mine is a high serial number. And I paid what I think is a great price for it new $1650. I bought my Python in 2023 for $1425 and a in 2021 my Anaconda. No issues with either gun, the Python have had light primer strikes on CCI primers, I know these are a bit harder than others and this is why I buy them. Years ago I parted with my 6 inch blued Python. Took the plunge on a new one, and mine had the cycling issue. I knew there was a chance this would happen. Sent it back and turn-around was about 4 weeks. I know have a beautiful revolver, and can stop beating myself for letting my old one go. More than likely, will get the Anaconda to round out my snake gun collection (already have the King Cobra). I was disappointed to have to send it back, and hope CZ will get Colt sorted.

    Ive been a gunsmith for a while now. Old pythons compared to new pythons i can tell you one does not function any better than the other. They both perform great. Everytime a big name manufacturer comes out with something or is re-releasing something you get a lot of haters out to knock it. Next thing you know you get falsely written articles claiming things like light primer strikes or cylinder lock up because its the first falsely accused issue they can make up off the top of their head. If you want a good 357mag i can give you an actual fact that a new colt python will do the job and last a lifetime so long as you dont do something like double charge a 357 case when reloading and fire it in which any ruger or colt will lock up and if its a s&w the frame will break among other things.

    I like Colt revolvers and owned 2 of the original Pythons. I guess I got lucky when I bought my 2021 6” Python. The trigger is better than I remember on my early Pythons, fit and finish is excellent, it’s been very reliable and I think it’s kinda cool! To your point, I do missing the rich bluing, but SS is way more durable. I think it’s worth the $1,449 I paid for it. I also bought a 3” King Cobra, and as practical self defense revolver, I like it even better than the Python! Still love my Ruger GP100, SP101, S&W 686 & 642 too!

Very smooth action, and I don't see where the Python would be any smoother. If I can find ammo for this thing, I will get it to the range. In my area, .357 and .38 Special are scarce. At the time it was a awesome deal but still only so cheap because it was a weird gun being what it was and a stubnose. Like maybe a 2 inch barrel. The one I really wanted blued and 6inch barrel with white pearl grips would have costed around 500-600 at the time I bought that one. I loved how smooth the action was. As a decades long Colt 'cult' customer I humbly concur and add '2' " cencts " Colt Pythons and Troopers, and the Mark III line, used to be superior before Ruger 's "'Six"' line and the introduction of the S&W L frame, and the -6 K frames advancing to frame mounted firing pins. Theoretically the clockwise cylinder rotation and bolt stop holes being cut between chambers instead of over the weakest part of the cylinder wall makes convincing engineering sense at least to novices and laymen as we all once were when new shooters. But the failure until now to use stainless steels and the business mismanagement decision that spare parts to keep classic guns still shooting are being allowed to dry up has lost my confidence to have kept treasured first revolvers or buy the new ones. I already sold or gave away all the dinosaur fossils to family members and keep only one Colt as a momento but have replaced the Pony wheelgun collection with counterparts from Ruger and Smith & Wesson to have sidearms that I can shoot and repair and maintain as necessary without the worry that if a part or spring breaks now that gun is just a paperweight. Maybe CZ will remedy this, watching to give them a fair chance.

      Most companies reach a place in manufacturing where they no longer support legacy firearms. Try calling CZ and see it they'll supply parts and service for their Model 50, 52, Scorpion, 58, 26, 53 or 60. Everyone moves on. I don't like it but that's the life of a manufacturer. I can't get Chevrolet to supply parts for cars made in the 1990's. Aftermarket, yes, but OEM...no.

And that is why platforms like the 111+ year old 1911/2011 persist, plenty of parts and service and technician specialists. The High Power approaches this reverence with the Turks and Springfield embracing it. Classic Colt revolvers are now trophies, heirloom legacies, collectibles and emergency shooters only, as using these to the point of needing a tuneup or repair will only devalue and render them into junk. Kimber, and now Henry offer competitive options to S&W and Ruger. The new Colts are a different breed from the prdicessors.

      Having said that, it is really silly to say one gun is better than the other. There are many aspects in a firearm that mean different things to different people. I have owned classic Pythons starting back in the 70's. There is nothing magical about them. They were just Colt Officers Model Match revolvers with a vent rib full underlug barrel. They were slick as glass because of the polishing that was done on them. It had a very old lock work design. The handwork that went into those guns is almost gone for a mass produced item like the Python. I would love to work the action of one of the new Pythons to compare it to the old. Bottom line, if Colt call's it a Python then it's a Python.

    I've had the pleasure of firing S&W 686 about 7 years ago using .357 ammo. I had recently purchased a .40 cal Springfield XD and the 686 using .357 ammo was a lot more controllable and exciting. It felt like driving a top-of-the-line Bentley (which I have) compared to any German car. There's just no comparison when it comes to the ultimate driving machine--the Bentley Flying Spur. I feel the same about the 686. I even fired several Glocks in various calibers and not even the 9mm Glock comes close to the 686's smoothness and, to me, minimal recoil. If it wasn't for capacity, I'd rather have a 686 than any semi-auto except for a CZ and possibly a S&W M&P subcompact 2.0. I've always been interested in testing out the Python but it seems that many who have experienced shooting both the 686 and Python prefer the 686. Maybe the Python is like a Rolls Royce, which is probably a little more refined than a Bentley but not in terms of performance. Even Hitchcock 45 tested both side by side and he prefers the 686.

Honestly my worse fear owning a python is that I'll drop it on pavement one day. No problem with a smith ha

      @PANICBLADE 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thing I have noticed from both the new Smiths and the new Colts is that they have complementary strengths. In terms of mechanical function, the other succeeds where the other might not. The Python, to me, has the smoother DA trigger, and the wider hammer tongue makes cocking the SA hammer easier. The 686, to me, has the better SA trigger and trigger reset. These are specifically regarding out of the box conditions. Both can be tuned to preference. The Ruger GP100 also enters with a similar relationship in strengths, as they are usually heavier, which helps with dampening recoil and potential durability. Plus, they have a simpler mechanical system and assembly for stripping and cleaning., and can be tuned to be plenty smooth themselves.
      3 fantastic and easily accesible iconic 357 revolvers with 3 different priorities at 3 different price points. I've said it too often, but we are truly in a golden age of firearms. Whatever is most important for you, there is an appropriate option. Yet if you crack open each of these similar looking and operating revolvers, you'll see how differently they work, which helps you appreciate the ingenuity of each company. I know a lot of people prize older revolvers because of the design/aesthetic differences, but the newer stuff is really something special, too. Technology has come a long way, so whether it's vintage or modern, appreciate what you have. It's almost always worth it.

      @@gman77gas I have " real world" experience with a new Cobra and it was a negative. Sent back to Colt twice for trigger/hammer issues. MIM hammer shearing in two at the area of the mold casting marks at 300 rounds . Cylinder lockup then complete failure. No plus P just using standard pressure ammo. Poor trigger return speed that induces short stroke lockup on rapid fire drills. Nice gun to look at,but a failure in the field where failure is not an option.

    I had been looking to buy a python for years but couldn't justify the 3,500+ dollars for an older one. I bought one in March and immediately took it to the range. Cylinder got stuck and I had to send it back to colt. Incredibly frustrating consider I spent a little over 1,700. Got it back 6 weeks later. With all that being said I'd buy it again. Shoots like a dream, one of the best looking/shooting revolvers ever made.

  • @JD-tl7ld
    @JD-tl7ld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I was excited for the new Python just because the worth of my originals has out stripped my want to shoot them. When it comes to firearms. I am firmly on the Colt side for 1911s, and S&W for revolvers.
    I was also one of the first ones to get their hands on a 2020 Python. I paid MSRP and had it in January of 2020. Firstly I will say mine did not exhibit any issues noted by others. Secondly I was impressed with the overall build quality of the gun. It had an action as nice as my originals, and shot as well too.
    That said. I was not happy with the laminate wood grips. I was pissed off that Colt made promises on things like sight options, but never delivered, and I wish the gun was in Royal blue.
    I wanted that gold bead sight that was promised. Colt says to contact Brownells, Brownells don't know what the hell Colt was talking about and told me to contact Colt. After a year and two months of monthly messages to Colt with offers to buy the sight, they just sent me one to shut me up.
    I am glad I bought the gun, and don't have any buyer's remorse. I do agree that Colt should had all their ducks in a row before relaunching a flag ship gun. There are not a lot of options for a half way decent target revolver anymore. S&W's QC has seemed to have left the building, as well as their junk locks. Rugers are overbuilt to be sure, but crude and not refined. I refuse to buy Taurus, already have a couple big Dans, and won't consider import guns. Not much left other than older Smiths.

    I'm going to disagree. Yes they had a few teething issues, but I think they have responded well with a fix.
    Colt took a huge gamble with these guns ( Cobra, King Cobra and the Python), I'd say it was a success for all 3... with few problems, on totally new redesigns.
    Colt has changed hands many times in the last 40 years. I think they were on a good path, towards giving their customers what they wanted, Snake guns.
    S&W, Sig, FN and every other company had issues as well. They were all fixed and now make fantastic guns.

    I bought a new one and am really impressed that it can be even compared to the original Python. My hat is off to COLT! My only complaint is that many of us shooters and collectors do all our own gunsmithing and parts unavailability is a real problem. Many companies offer service but no parts. It's not a selling point to me.
