    I'm 73 and have owned multiples of both since the 1980's and still do. I like shooting the S&Ws, but like looking at/admiring the Colts. They both are fine shooting revolvers, but the S&Ws just fit my hand better.

    Beyond my dad's 1917 vintage 1911, his 4-inch S&W .357 Mag was his favorite. I now have both. I've never handled a Python on the range, only in his collection. That he sold the Python and kept the S&W tells me a lot. He was an Army sniper in Korea, a member of the President's Hundred, a firearms instructor and gunsmith. I love the Model 27-2. It shoots like a Cadillac and runs .38 special for fun and .357 mag on payday! George Patton called his model 27 his "killing gun." Now the old 1911? Crude but fun. It's more agricultural but a literal blast to shoot.

It's gorgeous to look at, .38 special is so nice to shoot, and . 357 is not bad either with the long barrel. If you find one pick it up. I really don't think anyone who enjoys shooting would regret it.

    I gotta go with the S&W Model 27 due to the fact that it handles the magnums so well; that N frame is a beast. The Colt is beautiful, however, and I'd love to own one but def not for the $2-3k they are going for right now. My decision has nothing to do with the fact that I carry my S&W Model 27-2 six inch when out on the trail at all! Nope it doesn't. ;)

  • @texaswader
    @texaswader 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I own different barrel lengths of each and they are both very good revolvers. I favor the Model 27-2's over the Python because the Python is so fragile. Now I'm talking about the original Colt Pythons not the ones that they came out with recently. If an internal part breaks, and they will, you can't fix it. My buddy's 4" Python fell out of the zipper bag and onto the concrete shooting table, a fall of about a foot and the revolver wouldn't function. He took it to his gunsmith who said no way, send it back to Colt.
    While the Python is as smooth as glass it's also just as fragile and that is my only complaint about the revolver.

This was when Colt was in one of their many bankruptcy’s and they were not producing revolvers or making spare parts or for that matter working on guns for service. It was very difficult finding parts and almost impossible finding a gunsmith willing to work on one.

    I have owned a Smith 27-2 (target hammer, target trigger, P&R’ed, chamfered, five-inch barrel, square butt, red ramp front sight and fully adjustable rear sight) for many years. It’s EXTREMELY accurate, reliable and durable. It shoots everything very well. It’s an N Frame (large and heavy), but it soaks up recoil marvelously. I cannot think of a single thing I’d change on it . . . and I would never sell or trade it. It can be used for just about everything I’d practically want: defense, hunting, target shooting, and plinking . . . and with every conceivable .38 Special or .357 magnum round.

From 1935 until somewhere in the late 80s early 90s when Glock was giving there guns away to law enforcement to be the new sidearm. I have had a few different Pythons mainly because of the looks of the vent rib but I sold them because I have always preferred the Model 27 because it just felt better in my hand. As far as accuracy goes I have always found the 27 to come out on top, the S&W 27 is easier and cheaper to work on than the Colt Python. I had a chance to handle a current production Python and it is a nice revolver but I really wasn't impressed. Hopefully Colt has all the problems taken care of with the new Pythons, they are supposed to be stronger than the older ones. I have a 1973 mod 27 in 8 /38" that is smooth as butter and very accurate so I really doubt I will buy a new Python unless I pick up a used one that the owner had no problems with.

  • @walterkerrick6716
    @walterkerrick6716 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I own both and the Python is a little better in nearly every regard. It's true that if you run a lot of heavy .357 through one you'll have to replace a timing hand after awhile but that's not that difficult and was something Colt knew about and planned for. The trade off is that the Colt locks up much tighter than the Smith and at distances of 50 yards or more it starts showing that it is more accurate.

    The 27 triggers and hammer could be tuned to a very nice feel with out compromised reliability. The 27 stands over the pythons to anybody who really has to depend on a pistol for their safety if they really know handguns. New pythons are now cnc machined, much better consistancy of part match but from some shooters out there, there is still a possibility of internal parts breaking if an inexperienced shooter is handeling it. I personally have not had the opertunity to shoot the new pythons yet. And at their price im not for sure I will or want to.

    Excellent! Finally a good explanation on the philosophy of design/use of the Colt Pythons
    The S&W Three Five Seven (model 27) was released in 1935. It was built to handle continuous use of very hot. 357 magnum loads and it does.
    I love my model 27 and had add a 5" because of Skeeter Skelton. The 4" also works fine. But the 'FBI' 3 1/2" just looks 'Bad' IMHO
    Finally a good explanation of what the Pythons were designed to do.
    They were ment to be target guns fired single action.
    Those that complain about its double action don't understand What they were designed for.
    Also when the Colt Python and S&W Combat Magnum were designed, most police officers trained with 38 special and those that could carried. 357 magnum
    but didn't train with magnum loads.
    When police departments started to train with .357 magnum rounds the guns started to fall apart except for the model 27 and its plain Jane counterpart the model 28 Highway patrol.
    This is why S&W brought out the 586 & 686 slightly larger stronger .357 magnums made to handle continuous use of .357 loads.
    Ruger's answer was the excellent GP100.
    Pythons will shoot a long time without problems if you shoot 38 Specials and use them in single action.
    Hopefully the New 2020 Pythons will have good single and double actions and be able to handle using a steady diet of 357 magnums.
    Also hopefully Colt will solve the teething problems they've had with early production 2020 Pythons.
    If you don't have a S&W model 27 or 28 get one!!
    Cheers

I do have a Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman I shoot on a regular basis. It's hard to pick one over the other, but since these large N-frame Smith's will handle a constant diet of .357 Magnum rounds without knocking them out of time, I'll give my nod to the Smith.

  • @freddysamson1
    @freddysamson1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have owned both for years and neither one has ever gave me a problem but there is a difference in the durability that has been a proven issue. The S&W is a superior work/service revolver. The Colt is over the top in style and the action is a tad better right out of the box but not enough to justify the price difference. So it's this simple the S&W is the best in a complete package and the Colt for show and match shooting unless the S&W has been polished in the action. I luv both but if I had to pick one it would be the Python because I shoot more of both 357 and 38 than the average man ever will and I have never had an issue with the Colt so I don't see the problem others have had. I just like the feel and sights on the Colt Python better. But with this said I firmly believe the S&W is a better built and serviceable revolver and much more of a value to the average or working man/woman.

      By the way I carried and still prefer the S&W 66 that I polished inside and out myself and have used both for work and everyday carry for years Almost 45 years and is still with me to this day and never missed a lick short of a bad cartridge.

    I suppose I own the next best thing of this two, S&W model 28-2 and a Colt Trooper Miii like the both equally, the N frame on the S&W is just a beast.

    I have both. The model 27 is an 8inch and the Python is a 6inch. Both guns are blued and I can say that the the bluing on the python is to a much higher polish. It can be noticed that there was a lot of time spent on that. The model 27 is from the 50s and has the hammer I prefer, firing pin mounted on hammer. It has no problems at all with any kind of factory brass case ammo where as the python tends to light strike in double action unless I use federal or fiocchi ammo. I have not ever had timing issues with either gun. I am able to shoot the smith faster because the trigger resets faster, but because the trigger is just so fantastically smooth on the python, shooting it at closer distances like 30 and 40 feet just feels like cheating. Its rare that I don’t one hole group at that distance. With the smith i have to focus a bit more to do those sorts of things. At 50 yards slow fire single action, the guns perform almost identically in my hands at least. I tend to shoot a little better with the colt but that might just be from having shot it more. The smith is certainly easier to get work done on it. The custom shop charges a few hundred while with the colt, a rebluing could cost a thousand or two and colt wont do it on the vintage guns. Both guns are fantastic to have in the collection and I couldn’t recommend them enough as collectible range toys.

    The model 27 anyday. I'd even take the model 19 over the python. They're all great handguns but the price on the colt doesn't make it worth it.

    Smith and Wesson 27 is like your grandpas or dads old work truck. Steady reliable and ready for anything you can throw at it. The Colt is like a Ferrari, it looks super pretty costs a fortune and you cant work on the dang thing if it goes down. If you want to shoot your guns get a smith, if you want to show them off buy the colt.

    I've always wondered why if you want a very clean, very good finished, hand fit pistol/revolver It's hard to find anything outside of a 1911 or a older S&W (mostly there are exceptions) I carry a Glock but I just don't see people wanting these types of firearms as much anymore.

    I own a Colt 3-5-7 Magnum revolver manufactured in 1955. Mechanically the same as the Python only without the vented rib and the barrel length underlug. Regardless it is a beautiful shooting revolver. I also own a S&W Model 28 which lacks the beautiful finish of the Model 27, but internally is the same revolver. They're both great revolvers, but when it comes to hard shooting with hot magnum laods I favor...…...…………..the Ruger GP100!

    I love my 6" 27-2 with the patridge front sight, it's easily my favorite gun I own. I just wish it had a smooth trigger instead of the serrations. I have heard that it can develop wear problems on the cylinder if you fire it in double action a lot. Something to do with how heavy the mass on the cylinder is and the momentum it has while revolving. I've heard that larger caliber N frames don't have that issue because the chamber holes are larger and therefore the cylinder has less mass. I have yet to notice something like that on my gun, but it's definitely a concern.

    S&W came out with the workingman's M-27 the Highway Patrolman (M-28) in 1954 and ended production of it 1986. Might not be as the Registered it is still as functional. Colt never made a less expensive counterpart to the Python. Never could justify it. Close cousins to that gun were the Colt .357 (1953-1961) and the Trooper (1953-1969) on the Colt designated I frame. Plain barrel guns that could have the action slicked to the same extent of the Python by a well practiced gunsmith.

      586/686 is a much newer revolver the the revolvers from the 1970s compared in the video. 586/686 are very fine indeed and would be a good comparison with a 1990s Colt Python.

    I don't have an original S&W Model 27, but I do have a Performance Center 627-5, which is the 8 shot. I'm lucky enough to have a Colt Python 6 inch Blue in mint shape, but no box or papers.
    It's hard to compare the two. The S&W is more rugged overall and the Colt is better looking. I'm just happy to have both.
    I would like to get a Manurhin MR73. Someday.

    I own both. My Python was made the same year I was born (1960). I've fired it a lot, mostly with .38s in bullseye competition. I wanted a Python longer than any other gun I wanted, before I actually bought it. My 5in 27-2 is nice too. But it will go before the Python. I don't shoot as much as I used to. But I really don't care if I never fire my Python again. I could just stare into that bottomless Colt Royal blue for hours.
