This video was just what I needed Mr Trapper. I am getting ready to get a plane for a little vacay and will be doing a variety of touristy stuff and I came across a Red Rock Rover today and wondered if it might make a good "personal item" (aka Man-Purse LOL) that can be brought on the plane at no extra charge and something handy for some EDC stuff like sunglasses, small water bottle, sunblock, bug spray, tablet etc while touring around the area on vacation. I had never given any thought a sling pack before even though Indiana Jones had something similar ha ha ha. Your video was just what I needed because you describe the uses for which it may be handy as well at it's limitations and shortcomings in various applications. I can see what pockets and features the pack has while I'm checking it out at the store and already know what I want to carry so I don't need to see some guy do a gear dump and show me what pockets it has. I need someone who has actually used one in a variety of applications to introduce the concept to me and describe which applications it will work well and which it will not as well as it's pros and cons over a small backpack or fanny pack etc. Thank you for sharing your experience and perspectives.

Initially sling packs were intended for tactical use/situations and perform well in that role. They have morphed into EDC/urban and also fill those roles well. That said for "extended" use beyond day tripping or EDC get a traditional style backpack.

I agree completely. A sling pack is best for extremely light duty, where you are carrying maybe 12 pounds or less of gear. It's not for bigger loads with one strap. No matter who says it or what argument they make, a sling pack just isn't for significant loads. There's a big trend now to try and make tactical sling packs, and they cost the maker less money and materials to produce, and they heavily market these gimmicks to death.

I bought the same small bag on eBay for $9. I cannot use a waist bag because of a back surgery. This small bag is plenty big. Take a old flip flop shoe and cut it to size and attach it to the shoulder strap. It adds cushion and keeps it from sliding around. I attached mine with 2 zip ties. .99 cent fix. Good video bud !

    Good video!
    Here's my 2 cents...
This type of carry is where a traditional envelope style haversack, made from traditional materials really shines. Use it by itself, or add it to a back/waist pack or bedroll and you're good to go.
You are 100% right about only carrying a few items using this method. Just the things you only need at a moments notice.
    Thanks for the video...

The biggest downside is getting it stolen off your person, exactly like a purse snatching. Same worries of any and all external carry bags of any type. The low risk environment like the wild? Mitigates the risk. Please bear in mind these bags originated in the military for use in transitioning between riding in a vehicle, it sits in lap, then dismounting, standing, and rotating to back, occassionally bring to front to access contents. That is the basic utility of sling. If you want a back pack, with two comfy straps, by all means, get one. Or a fanny pack.

I bought a sling pack at a gun show 15+ years ago. My experience with it is the same as yours. I still have it and use it but do not sling it . Very uncomfortable if used as designed. Another useful review based on your actual experience. Keeping it real!!!

Bought a sling pack by mistake, couldn't return it and couldn't figure how to use it. Thanks for the ideas. By appearances, my bag is smaller than yours but should hold a water bottle, sandwich, and box of .22s. Perhaps even a very small rabbit (squirrel size). Thanks again for the ideas.

I carry the small sling bag for my edc. Plenty of rooms for goodies and 💥💥. I wear it in front as a belly bag. Great access to it even when driving. I added a should pad to it to make it comfortable. I carry everything from first aid, fire kit, water filter, multi tool, flashlight, blades, battery pack, cables, surgical gloves, shears, glasses case, 38 bodyguard EDC back up, duct tape, cordage, asp, storm whistle, and my wallet.

  • @ThatsMrRightToYou
    @ThatsMrRightToYou 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Two MAJOR issues here: 1- you aren't wearing the pack right. That is the worst possible way to carry, as you have it backwards. 2- those two packs are literally the lowest end of sling packs for carry. I wouldn't knock sling packs until you get a better one that is rated for realistic use. Such as maxpedition jumbo/edgepeak/entity16, or hazard4 lumbar packs.

I have that small sling pack I use for day hiking or riding my motorcycle. I added a couple pieces of paracord to the D rings with Canadian Jam Knots that I use to secure a jacket across the top. I keep a bicycle water bottle in it with a belt pouch, Arcturus poncho, and a folded up piece of tarp 3'x4'. The Arcturus poncho is 8' long and I use it as a plow point shelter. The tarp piece is my ground sheet. When I fill the water bottle, I move it to my belt and that gives me room to add food. It is a pack that gets used.

Nice well thought out review. I have been using the Mountainsmith Day Pack since the 1990s. I have both the first and second generation. I use them for both hunting and just hiking. I have a couple of sling bags but just can't find a use for them other that a car bag. I did however just buy one from SOG off Amazon for $20.00 that holds 6 30 round AR mags and is a perfect grab and go bag.

Wow, what a great video. you take the time to explain your views and thoughts and share them with others.. Your explanations are not condemning nor caustic but give comparisons and ideas to the viewer as to why you choose other items for an alternative solution. I can see a large sling bag as a keep-in-the-truck bag or a quick grab-and-go.

I have an old Rothco sling bag, It's discontinued but it's a lot like their advanced tactical sling bag. I've used this thing for almost 20 years and it's been great. It did come with an adjustable shoulder pad. I also have 2 MOAB 10's. They have nice shoulder pads as well. Makes them a lot more comfortable. I use 1 for bushcraft camping and the other I've made my get home bag.

Basically depends on quality-made - and price point. If you're not going to haul the entire house in the ruck for expedition carry ... a true sling bag is for majority of items in day hiking, overnight camping, small EDC, or small volume carries. Might just as well have a school back pack.

I think back to a news report about students who wear their backpacks on one shoulder carrying many heavy textbooks and other supplies. The result; neck and shoulder pain. The doctor advised that students should utilize the straps of their backpacks on both shoulders.
Sling packs are excellent for light hiking. There are many brands out there like 511 Tactical or Maxpedition. The Mountainsmith Day lumbar pack is an excellent alternative to sling packs.
I think a backpack or lumbar pack will do lots of good.
    Great video.
Happy Holidays to you and yours.

I think those bag are notfor hicking i's a Urban bag and I have a lot of those bag Maxpedition, 5.11, condor, and so on! it is a every day kind of bag, you move it in front of you et bus, metro in public transports to keep an eye on your stuff, I have the MOAB 10 and it is a great bag you don't have to go over your bag to pick your CCW, it is ambidextrous so I can Lent it to a friend or to my Girlfriend if need be I don't have to remove the pack of my back to take/put stuff in the bag and you can put body armor in as protection and keep the bag in front to have acces to your mags for the weight problem I did like a lot of those pack have I put a buckle on the main strap and I use the secondary strap (on the moab 10) to help me stabilize the pack and balance the weight a bit more, Like on the maxpedition bag or the condor one the have a secondary strap to stabilize the pack and if a need something inside I juste unclip the secondary strap and bring the bag in front. It's a greate Urban edc/ event and show bag and I can carry the pack all day. But it is not a good bag If you are hiking all day for long distances or if you the terrain is not flat, you are better of with a backpack or a load bearing backpack or belt. Last thing your bag is to loose on you it is probably to bouncy and it pull your shoulder more if it is loose than if it is ajusted to your back. Slingbag are great urban, edc or camera bag and I won't leave it out of my gear.

First, you sling it across your back, not the front. You carry what you may need....
It's not a be all carrier as some other men have warned not to over stuff it. I have one and it's great to use to run around to run errands. It's also safer as women are being robbed of their expensive handbags.
It may not work for you, but it depends on what you want out of it.

  • @seniorchiefharris

I agree with you in regards to your sling packs cutting into your upper shoulder and neck...and also agree with you that they are intended for 'lighter' use as designed. Have you tried a sling pack that has a 'wider' neck strap? The one's you demonstrated only use a 1 1/2" strap and they will certainly cut into one's neck if the sling pack is heavy... Try a sling pack that has a MUCH WIDER neck strap and you'll be surprised...but once again, don't overload it and pack it with the kitchen sink...it's designed for lighter/shorter day hikes and urban use... If used as designed, you'll be more happy with them! Back packs are designed for heavier and prolonged use...not the sling pack... STAY SAFE and HEALTHY ALWAYS!

Hey Meat Trapper, I agree with some of what you are talking about. I guess it does depend on the intense use. I have a Game Plan Gear Spot & Stalk pack. For me ,it’s perfect because I only use that one for archery hunting. I use it to carry my stuff to the tree stand & back. I may do a little spot & stalk, but that’s it. It does have a good padded shoulder strap & a hip strap to help hold the weight as needed. I’m sure you’re right, after a couple hours hiking, it would get cumbersome & wear you out. As always, keep up the videos. I’m going to try your wise info this season & try to snare a hog or two. Good luck trapping.

From one snareman to another..... I tried the JC Conner Snare bag... is it perfect, no... but it is definitely the best thing I’ve found so far, now I’m a land trapper, but I’d definitely use it for water snareing as well... I really Really like it... didn’t like the price tag, but after I’ve worked with it for over a year, Im not sure if I’ll find something I’m happier with, I’m a little camera shy, or I’d try to do a good review on it. But I’m going work on getting past that.

Respect. As for post-soviet citizen - small "super-duper" tactical bags do not make sense , if you are not going to hold lots of gear (just a bottle of water, a knife and a canned meat). For other purposes any backpack is much more handier, In our case SIDOR back pack sounds fine(not tactical, but sturdy and lightweight)))

Need to overcome the neck biting, with a John Brown waist belt on the bag, then it wont migrate, and the waist, not the shoulder will carry majority of weight. A sling is for bare essentials. If you need to cram a sling bag, then you need a small ruck, and learn how to have the proper carry system.

I have a back pack for hiking/where ever I go/ for carring allot of stuff, I will be using a bag like this, at the gym and all I will be puting in it is, Keys,Handsanatizer, wallet, tablet, phone, headphones and maybe something else, but thats all I will be putting in it, for now, my water bottle is almost a gallon, so its not going in a bag, regardless of the size, I do on occation hang my water bottle from my back pack strap, D-ring, with a carabeaner. Anyway I think a bag like this is perfect for the gym, but thats about it, I have a pouch connected with mollie, on my back pack strap, for easy access, so this type bag wouldn't be beneficial to me, but I could see how some people would benifit from it, granted, they could just get some mollie pouches, for there backpack straps, anyway good vid.

I agree with all you have said and many of the comments. I like a lumbar pack or small day pack as well. Not slamming the companies or their products but even 6 years after neck surgery a sling bag does not work for me. I could see the practicality of a very small traditional haversack like some re-enactment type people would wear. Even thought of making one myself. One of my much used packs is an Vietnam era butt pack on GI pistol belt with a H-harness that I have added some exterior pockets to. Great for hot weather as you mentioned. Sometimes old school just keeps on working. Thanks for the video. ATB

Got a hog snare question. Will hog snares catch dogs and if so will it kill them. I work for a large farm in east texas and we have hog problems year around. Currently we use several kinds of traps. I have been thinking about putting some of southern snares hog snares and some of his lure. Farm is about 2500 acres with woods and scattered houses surrounding it. We do see dogs roaming around the place. Any ideas?

Normally, when a domestic dog gets in a snare, he doesn't fight hard enough to choke out. The only time a dog will get choked out is when there is something nearby that he can jump over and get hung by the neck. I have caught dozens of dogs and only had one that choked himself out by jumping over a downed tree and hanging himself. No system is 100% fool proof, but snaring is 99%. Sometimes the dog owner has to take responsibility for their animal.
