Hey Jay! Just an idea, if you wrap your wood shed with a light weight landscape fabric it will keep the snow out and let the air through. Also, being a black fabric it will help with melting. ( freezing rain ) thanks' for the videos! Keep them coming. Ryan
Jay when using a bottle jack to lift up the cabin use a 3/8" or 1/2" thick piece of steel approximitly 4" x 4" between the small end of the bottle jack and the wood. It will help to distribute the weight on the small end of the jack so that it doesn't sink into the wood.
Good grief, Jay. Leveling the cabin is one hairy scary project. You did a great job. The amount of energy you have is awesome. I am looking forward to watching the new videos of your trip - hope you have a wonderful time.
Don't forget sister said to paint the shed before bad weather rots the wood on it. You can burn or paint the ends of your floor joist you just cut for the same reason. Love your tenacity, keep up the good work. I know there is always more that can be done than time to do it.
I know you say you don't know much about what you're doing but I way know less than you and learn a lot from your channel. I dig the community of this channel and look forward to your Labrador stories. Keep on keeping on, brother. Be well and stay safe!
Really glad to see the extra video. You really are an Energizer bunny getting these tasks done and amazed that you’re getting anything thru that creek anymore
FYI. I would have just stood that box up on end. Ready made walls, floor and sides. One piece of plastic to cover the front. No digging through the snow for kindling. :)
Hello Jay, I was able to give the first thumbs up. I bet that info will help you sleep better tonight 😂 On a serious note, another awesome video yet again, your progress at the cabin is just perfect and so fun to watch. I'm very happy for you and the progress is just awesome. I appreciate being taken along for the ride !! Just awesome 👌
JAY i thought you dissapeared... i stopped getting notifications from your channel, so i thought you stopped posting... i cant believed ive missed so many videos. Youre the best Jay
This is my favourite time of year, and these videos showing Jay preparing for the snow, ice and sub zero temperatures to come, are a real treat. Jay - you are such a grafter, I never fail to be inspired by your positive, 'can do' attitude. You make significant improvements to your homestead on every visit, single handed. I find it so much more interesting to watch a non-expert do this kind of work than a professional. It's so relatable, as a non-expert myself, to see this smart, open minded and ingenious guy tackle problems and solve them - even if it's sometimes by a process of trial and error. And as you are learning the best way to do these practical, and sometimes very challenging jobs, viewers like myself are learning along with you. I confess I wish you have a burly pal with you lending a hand though, it's a lot of work for one person! Thanks so much for sharing the journey. I'm kinda hoping you and lovely Crystal and your sweet dog might spend a memorable Christmas at the cabin this year - or at least make a festive yuletide video or two, in the run up to Christmas. It's the perfect setting for Santa, a cosy fire, multi coloured lights, a bauble-laden fir tree, and delicious, hearty festive food - and you have your own Christmas light show in the sky for free, thanks to Aurora Borealis! Keep up the superb work, respect to you from England. XXX
Hey Jay. I love the show. Great job. While watching this video, I noticed that your wheel barrow was losing a nut on the front of the tub. You may want to tighten it before you lose it. Keep rocking it. 👍
I'll be honest with you Jay, when you first started fixing up this cabin, I didn't enjoy it. I really liked your camping videos. But, as you've progressed I am now a huge fan. I am looking forward to more winter camping content though. Keep up the great work. Hope all is well with you and the family, be safe out there.
Good job!.... When lifting with a metal jack.... slip a piece of 1/4 inch plate steel on top of jack head say 4x4 inch or 4x6inch or what have you... its so the head of the jack doesn't bury its self into the wood.
The 2x4 and wider off cuts can be used as links to secure your pallet walkway to your out house. 3 -- 2x4's @ 10"s will slide into the pallet perfectly then nail em on each main pallet support to join two pallets together.
Maybe someday you might want to build a big deck or maybe something down by the water. Save it for that. It's a good long heavy piece that if you had it out in the weather you could certainly paint it or protect it and then use it. Save as much wood as you can, that just saves you having to cut it in the winter. You also might want to save wood for a future fire pit when you have friends and family out. Your doing a great job Jay. enjoy watching!
Progress comes one day at a time. That walkway to the outhouse will definitely make for easier "visits". Good luck with finishing everything you need to do before the snows come. BTW, the music you selected for your videos is so relaxing. Perfect for the channel!
Jay?!?!? You are daring to have pulled that whole crib out and not have any temp bracing in case of jack failure! you should have jacked the structure up enough to slide that crib back and release the pressure on the jack. A hydraulic jack can fail and bad things happen. In all honesty, I was yelling at my monitors saying "No, No Jay dont it!!!" I used a 20 ton bottle to jack up my office (10x20) after it settled just as you are doing but I had extra CMU's and cap blocks to wedge under just out of my working area to take the load of the jack and disperse it accordingly. Then I had to get mobile home tie downs to secure as per inspectors comments at inspection. Be safe!
This winter will be completely different on your channel this year. Looking forward to seeing what types of projects you can do in the winter and how you will handle all of it before the ice road is in place. No pressure Jay!
The split box fills up fast, and it's pure gold when the snow starts to pile up and you need a quick fire. Glad someone below mentioned pressure treated wood. That's always a potential issue when you're burning construction waste. And fried cheese smokies and mac & cheese - no Sultan ever ate so well!
When putting th new floor on the extension try to keep it increments of 7” from finished floor to finished floor. Seven inches is about the perfect height for a step. Anything less or more it will be uncomfortable to walk up or down. Good luck!!
Amazing Jay! I'm really excited to see the extension build start. You are making so many improvements to the property and it's so fun watching it grow!
Hard to tell if any of those wood scraps are pressure treated. If yes, please do not burn in your stove, they will emit quite toxic chemicals when burned. Keep these videos coming, makes me look forward to winter even more, knowing we will see you toiling in the snow again.
If you can not tell than you know that it's not so placing a message on here like that doesn't educate anyone because we know that when we buy wood that's treated we can save it not destroy it to make fire of it..
Hey Jay, watching you move all that stuff around by hand and the other projects made me think you might want to get some kind of lower back brace or something like they wear at the hardware stores. Flexible enough that you can move around but something that will provide some support and protection for your lower back/ abdomen. Just want you to be safe so we can all keep sharing in your adventures! 😎👍
It's fantastic you'll be here in Labrador for a month. We live at our cabin on Grand Lake Road for the summer and fall months. Can't wait to see your videos from here! Keep up the great work, and have a wonderful trip!
Keep the length on that beam.. the worth is in the length. Don’t cut it up for something small and I would put it back under the cabin or if you’re gonna keep it outside, I would put a tarp over it. That’s pretty expensive piece of wood when you need it….love the channel!!…keep up the great vids!!..your a lucky man!
I've been busy with work for several months and out of touch with your content, it feels good to be back! Looking forward to the coming winter and enjoying your journey here in Texas. Cheers!
Jay what fun! Great work in the Cabin. Purchase yourself a Mesh Draped Forest Hat from good old “Canadian Tire”. The one that has the thin soft screening you can see through. Sand Flies are the worst and hungry this time of year. All my best.
Another fantastic video Jay! Kraft dinner and hot dogs or bologna is a great meal, especially when at the cabin. Keep up the great work Joy! You have the land around the cabin looking great. As always I'm looking forward to the next video. Cheers
I would have left those floor joist extensions on, and then put the new ones to the side. THis way with the permafrost upheaval in the winter, the new room is tied permanently to the old cabin. By making a separate unit and just pushing them together, they will want to separate and you will have air gaps, pests getting inside, lost heat.
I started following you over four years ago when you had less than 20,000 subscribers. I have to say, you have come so far and I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You're doing great.
Our area of the country is amazing. I wish more Canadians could experience it. I cannot wait for the lakes to freeze and snow to happen. Sledding season is incredible up here and I am looking forward to our dark skies this winter with the northern lights the way they have been the last few weeks. Bears have been a bit of an issue in and out of town for sure this summer. Cheers from a YK NWT fan ;)
Another great video! You got a lot of things done looking forward to your next video and looking forward to the video you are going to make while you go visit family and friends and like all ways may god watch over you on this amazing project 🙏❤️✌🏼
Once it freezes, if you've got a buddy with a plow you could ask him or throw him a few bucks to plow out to your cabin. If not, see if the groomer for the trails will clear it out. I just turned 66 on 9-11 and I love Mac & cheese. I’m like you, if I were a multimillionaire I would eat that dinner you cooked and be very happy with it!
Hi Jay, always love your videos ❤ I would make a proper door going out onto your roof upstairs. And put a screen in it for summer so you can open it to let the heat out as it rises.
I suggested a stepdown for your new camp section on a previous video and now hearing that's your plan. You and others probably came up with the same idea, but nice to hear that's your plan.
Jay, the most recent winner of Alone is from Labrador. Do you know William? Also, when you are tightening your chain for the saw, rest the tip of the bar on something so it holds the bar up. Then tighting the chain. Works much better. Chain stays tighter, longer.

Beware that steel plate will allow the jack cylinder to slide off easily too if not perfectly plumb.
I am Canadian and I am proud of you young man. Bravo!
Awesome comment
You are definitely a devoted hard worker. To do this all by yourself is an inspiration. Thank you. Enjoy your time going home. Take care
Jay, the change in your cabin so far is absolutely amazing, breathtaking, I really congratulate you

Really glad to see the extra video. You really are an Energizer bunny getting these tasks done and amazed that you’re getting anything thru that creek anymore

The Northern lights are beautiful and the music tops it off thanks jay ❤️

Wood with some rot should be stove wood. Don’t waste it. When it is extremely cold the warmth from burning it is every bit as nice as “snob wood”…
Such a great channel to watch, thank you Jay
I would put that 18-footer back underneath the cabin to protect it from the weather.
And when he is ready, i think this long piece would be great for a peak in a wood working shop. ❤
Love the videos Jay. Keep up the great work. You sure have a lot of drive to get all that work done. I get tired just watching. Wish you all the best.

can't wait for winter! Hope you keep doing cabin stuff forever :) With a little camping on the side hahaha. Love from Montréal.
Adorei as coisas estão ficando otimas na sua propriedade até o próximo video
Nice work as usual.
Once it freezes, if you've got a buddy with a plow you could ask him or throw him a few bucks to plow out to your cabin. If not, see if the groomer for the trails will clear it out. Then you can drive the pickup and a trailer out. And you can get wood delivered out to the cabin, the guy will even stack it for you.
For the dinghy at the shallow creek section, you might consider buying detachable legs with nice wide tyres on them to fit t the stern. They make moving a dinghy a breeze.
