  • Michael Jordan shuts down Reggie Miller in Game 7 of the 1998 ECF.
Credit to Alex Groz for uploading the full game - • Video
Reggie had a good game through 3 quarters, but even in those 3 quarters he never had success against Jordan other than one 3-pointer and a fastbreak layup.
Reggie was getting wide-open shots against the other Bulls defenders, but he rarely even got a shot off, and sometimes couldn't even get the ball in the first place, when he was guarded by Jordan.

Yes. He was clearly tired worn out! You can see the fatigue in his movements. But I think this is one of his greatest games. With the stakes as high as they were, he played an all around game. He didn't shoot well. But they needed everyone of his 28 points. And the fact that he was as tired as he was but was still able to get to the free throw line by driving is amazing. He had several key rebounds with 9 in total. He got others involved with 8 assists. And to top it off he held one of the great clutch playoff performers in the game to 0 points in the fourth quarter. This is an underrated jewel of a game. Amazing.

Awesome defensive performance by MJ on not allowing Reggie to score in the 4th Quarter. Reggie was hot most of the game. I watched this game 7. I forgot how intense this game 7 was between the Pacers and the Bulls. I remembered the Pacers jumping out to a 12-0 lead early in the game. Damn the Pacers had the recipe to win game 7. Unfortunately Reggie cooled off at the worse time. But credit must be given to MJ. Jordan was an incredible defensive player when he had to stop the opposing team's best scorer when it was absolutely necessary. Great game 7! I forgot how intense this game was despite watching it.

    • @toddsands6000
      @toddsands6000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@bret wilson What can one do or say? The superstar always gets the benefit of the doubt. I can respect your opinion. I have a question, did you honestly believe the Pacers were going to win that game 7? Despite the Pacers going up 12-0 in the 1st quarter, 99% of the basketball world knew who was going to win that game! It was that classic NBA on NBC back in the day. But let's be honest, Reggie didn't deliver when it counted. He shrank, and MJ's big game experience intimidated Reggie. That's my opinion. I'm not a Bulls fan and I get the amount of calls MJ received during his day. But I also watched MJ often getting nearly decapitated by opposing players too at times and no fouls were called (Pistons & Knicks). In fairness, I will need to carefully watch that 4th quarter again to see how much Reggie was held by MJ. In the end like many guards during that era, players often had no problem settling on being second best to MJ. That was a bit frustrating back then. The only two players that made MJ work hard during games that I remembered was Gary Payton and John Starks.

    • @toddsands6000
      @toddsands6000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@bret wilson And that is the reason why teams like the Pacers often lose. Clearly you're in denial buddy. Read these words and digest them well. The Pacers didn't have it! A guy like you often wants to justify why a team their preferred team lost. Oh, they lost because of this,....they lost because of that. Oh, Reggie was being held. Trust me buddy, Reggie's a great player. Competitive wise!? Reggie is NOT on the same level of competitiveness that Michael had. And that's why Michaell's led Bulls won game 7. I wasn't a Bulls fan, but they were the best in the 1990's. Stop with the loser analogy and making excuses about Why the Pacers lost to the Bulls. You're talking like a loser! Again, the Pacers weren't good enough. I loved my Knicks in the 1990's. And I'm not going to make any excuses about why Patrick Ewing and the Knicks often came up short. They didn't have it either despite how much I wanted them to win it all. Get over it man! The Pacers were just another at best very good basketball team in the 1990's just content on wanting to hang with the Bulls. And not beat them. That was the problem with many contending teams in the 1990's. Only the 1993 Phoenix Suns and the 1998 Utah Jazz had the best chances talent wise to beat the Bulls. And those teams blew it too because MJ was too much into their collective heads. If you didn't see that, Oh well, I consider yourself an obtuse basketball fan that thinks he knows more than he actually does. No worries, even the Stephen A Smith's and Skip Bayless' often get things wrong. The difference, they get paid more money than you and I on their takes. And again, MJ played great defense. Stop making excuses for Reggie. The guy crawled into his shell when the pressure was on. The Pacers just couldn't hang with the Bulls when it came to big boy pressure packed basketball when it was all on the line. Those were the facts! And stop with the Scottie Pippen was the reason why the Bulls were so great. It's called Team Basketball. Scottie was part of the reason. Not the main reason! Every great team has multiple players responsible for their championship runs. Remove MJ and what did the Bulls have? Your theory is pathetic!

This video should be analyzed and replayed over and over fro a number of reasons.
    1. People incorrectly show hard fouls as THE reason why defence was more physical back then. That's incorrect, as it was an element not the only one. People should focus on the gauntlet of screens that people needed to go through on both ends. MJ is getting HAMMERED by screeners as he chases Reggie. It is a constant American Gladiators gauntlet that would tire anybody out and apparently knock some players down. This is one of the many examples of how much more physical the league was compared to today.
    2. Multiple moving pieces are harder to defend than a player going between the legs 20 times with little to no ball movement. Chasing these moving pieces takes a toll on you physically. Even if there's no contact (which there's ton of) your legs and stamina wear you down during the course of a game. It make every possession harder as the game wears down. I can guard someone dribbling 20 times all day long and use up little energy compared to chasing someone around all day.
    3. MJ is the GOAT perimeter defender bar none. How he was able to get over the hard screens is second to none. His anticipation and reading of screens, how he shadowed players, how he cut off angles even over screens, how he closed in on the offensive player is magical, seriously.... There was a few instances in which you swore Reggie had a look at the basket. You saw him shed MJ via 3 screens and you just KNEW he was gonna get the shot off, you KNEW he was gonna catch and shoot the ball before MJ could even got there. But MJ was there, magically he was there and forced Reggie to pass. This is something Reggie, Jalen, analysts don't tell you. This is something so called experts such as Bill Simmons don't see or understand. MJ is the most underrated defender ever, and YES he was better than Pip.
The Last Dance is bringing a renewed interest in MJ and there's tons of narratives that are floating around by some in order to rewrite history as a mask to cover up for other players. They want to devalue MJ so narratives are being created. One of these narratives will be that Pip defending Mark Jackson was the catalyst for the Bulls winning game 7. This is an attempt to once again discredit MJ and incorrectly prop up MJ to devalue his standing as the GOAT. While Pip did do a great job on Mark and rotating, let's not forget why the Pacers lost.
MJ's defense on Reggie on the 4th quarter sealed the victory for them.
MJ's defense on Mullin sealed the victory for them.
MJ's rebounding sealed the victory for them.
Not saying he was the sole reason as both Kerr and Kukoc stepped up. But without MJ locking down everyone from Mark, to McKey, to Mullin, to Reggie all while grabbing rebounds, getting timely assists, and well... scoring the Bulls had no chance.
MJ is the GOAT and this is just a small example why he was not just the GOAT player, bu the GOAT defender.

The highlight of this clip for me is around 1:00 where Michael just basically blows up a very intricate off ball screen play to get Reg a corner three. There are plays where he just is the best athlete on the floor with the ability to get to spots faster and close out under complete control, but then there's a play like this that just shows you how good he was at basketball. It's the seventh game of the series so I'm sure he's seen this look or a variation of it in the first twelve times the bulls played the pacers this year, but he basically is in the meeting room on this play. He knows where the ball is, where his man is, and where the two screens are and beats everyone to the spot. That turned what should have been an easy three into Miller having to back down Jordan against the shot clock.

Look at the energy Jordan expended defensively here, in a game 7 at age 35, while averaging 32/6/4/49% FG in the playoffs through this point. It wasn't only this game or 4th quarter, either - he did the job on Reggie, Mullin and Travis Best especially when needed. Best particularly got shut down several times by MJ after he had started to heat up against Kerr/Harper. Jordan was a beast defensively. But this series andhis age definitely took a toll on him physically, as I felt he didn't have the same energy level in the Finals as he did in the ECF.

With the old rules LeBron wouldn't have time to breathe a sec, MJ was able to exhaust you non-stop the whole time he was your defender! Great Defense. But that should have been a no call on Reggie Miller, not an offensive foul. It could have just as easily been a three point play. But in a game 7 with a trip to the championship on the line, you don't make a call like that. Still, I acknowledge good defense, but that call really shifted momentum. You could see it was B.S call from Larry's face. And Larry doesn't hide his emotions when he thinks a call is B.S

The incredible thing about Jordan is he is the only great perimeter player to not only
Dominate on offense and be the key part on offense
But to dominate on defense. He has locked down any and everyone with amazing results on defense while still having to be the focal point on offense for his team.
NO OTHER perimeter player can say this.
    No Kobe
    Not Lebron
Definitely not magic or bird, Barry or West.
Or any of the ball dominating PGs
It would be the equivalent mix of Kawhi & Stephin one!
ONLY centers/ big men have had this attribute
    & not all of them
Russell never had to carry both
Wilt never carried both that led to team success
Shaq & Kareem , were never the force on defense
Robinson did but it never led to any real team success so it's muted and for a shorter time period.
Only Hakeem and Duncan come to mind of carrying both ends with amazing personal success and team success.
