Chocolate-covered pretzels were made because a man was sick of his pregnant wife yelling at him to get her something sweet and salty so he created these for her. Also on the same day he tried chocolate covered potato chips and then chocolate covered bacon. All are wildly successful in the states.
A not-insignificant part of Western Civilization was a man inventing something to keep his pregnant harpy happy.
I had no idea chocolate and bacon could go together so well...until I had a chocolate chip cookie that included bits of real bacon. Chocolate also makes a great secret ingredient for marvelous chili.

My heart dies every time the pure hatred of Hershey chocolate comes up.

It's speculated that Hershey's uses controlled lipolysis to break down the fatty acids in milk to stabilize it. This creates the tangy butyric acid which is also found in vomit and parmesan cheese and creates that distinctive taste non-North Americans tend not to like, e.g. if you've been eating Cadbury all your life. Of course, those of us in the U.S. & Canada have eaten Hershey's since we were kids so it's like our normal when it comes to chocolate candy.
After reading that, I’m thankful I’m deathly allergic to chocolate.
No speculation about it; that *is* how a lot of chocolate in America is (or was) made. The practice started way back in the 1800s, to overcome the logistics of shipping the raw materials (especially milk) and then the finished products over such long distances without benefit of constant refrigeration. By letting the milk "spoil" just a *little* bit, by controlled lipolysis, it actually made the milk less likely to spoil completely during transportation from the farm to the factory, and the finished chocolate would have a longer shelf life.
The reason they *still* make it that way is because, like you said, it's what U.S. and Canadian consumers are accustomed to. They're probably afraid that if they change it, it'll be like the New Coke fiasco, where everyone will reject it because it doesn't taste like what they expect a Hershey's to taste like, regardless of whether the "new" version is really better-tasting or not.
Tbh I hateeee German and European chocolate. Someone told me I had to try it so I did and it actually made me gag. Its too rich for me.
@@ballyastrocade5672 Don't know if that is true for original Hershey. It was said Milton Hershey chose the Pennsylvania area because he could get plenty of fresh milk. Who knows now, with chocolate being made wherever?

But the chocolate used for Reeses isn't the same recipe as Hershey chocolate.
I get that, but reeses chocolate doesn't taste like Hershey's. When I went to NA for the first time, 20 yrs ago) I was really excited to try all the various treats and the very popular Hershey chocolate. The chocolate was a freaking let down, I was so bummed lol. I still liked: crunch bar, reeses, baby ruth (this one I wanted to try since I saw Goonies rofl), snickers, 3 musketeers was alright, starburst also good but not as good as some in my country, I tried more but I don't remember anymore XD.

Being from PA that Hershey’s comment hurt a little but I kind of get it. If you want to go for a PA based chocolate covered pretzel I suggest Sarris Candies chocolate covered pretzel rods.

Hershey's is legally allowed to use rancid milk and making their chocolate, that would explain where the baby vomit taste comes from.

The main reason that Hershey's has a unique taste is because of the milk that the American manufacturer uses. Nowadays, the company have ditched the sour milk in favour of butyric acid, which gives the bars a similar taste.
The milk they use is NOT spoiled, it would not be legal to use at that point. Some of it simply "not fresh" which, if you're against that, stop eating cheese and yogurt.

Bless Ghirardelli. They make 95% and 97% bars. I am the same way. Never really had a sweet tooth and I hate overly sweet stuff so for chocolate, the darker and more bitter it is the better.

Flips are made in my hometown in New York!! The factory gives away the "mistake flips" that don't make it through QA. They also make Turtles, which are little chocolate/caramel gooey pieces of heaven.

Chocolate-covered (regular or white) pretzels are a wonderful treat at Christmas. Put together a small basket full of Christmas treats including the pretzels. Make a friend.
I usually eat pretzels as part the Canadian Bits 'n Bites (barbecue flavor) which is our version of the American Chex Mix.

Yes, Pretzels are originally German and generally made with sourdough bread- dough. Soft pretzels and some melted cheese or chocolate is the best hands down!

Hershey uses butyric acid in their chocolate. It's a chemical present in rancid butter. The result is the characteristic vom-like note in Hershey's chocolate.
I just got some of Snyder's of Hanover's new product called Rounds, and they are round preztel balls (about the size of a semi-puffed popcorn) and they are amazeballz. They are far too easy to eat a LOT of them very quickly because of their shape. Can't dip them like regular or stick pretzels, but you don't need to. Just toss em in and wash em down with a soda or beer and on nom nom nom. Would go great with Guinness!
