    • Mental Health Problems...
    Generic name: Methylphenidate.
    Brand names: Ritalin and Concerta.
Available as a tablets, modified release tablets and capsules.

    - Tablet: swallow it whole with half a glass of water. It is possible to chew on the tablet or break it.
    - Modified release tablet or a capsule: also take it with water, but don’t break it and do not chew on it. This can decrease its effectivity.
In addition it is advised to take Methylphenidate during a meal, as this can decrease your chances on side effects.

    - However, when treating ADHD symptoms with regular tablets in children older than 6 years or in adults: a usual starting dose would be 5mg 2x/day. If necessary this can be slowly increase up to a maximum dose of 60mg/day.
    - Here it is important to note, that the dosages of modified release tablets and capsules may be different.
    - When treating narcolepsy in adults, your doctor might prescribe a dose of 10mg/ 2-3 per day.
    What are common the side-effects?
    - Very common (10%): insomnia, nervousness, headache, palpitations, decreased appetite, nausea and a dry mouth.
    - Common (1-10%): upper respiratory tract infection, shortness of breath, decreased appetite, weight loss, aggression, agitation, irritability, restlessness, anxiety, panic attack, stress, depression, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, tics, tremor, mood swings, fast heart rate, high blood pressure , upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, sore throat, rash, itching, fever and fatigue.
Uncommon (0.1-1%): Hypersensitivity reactions, psychotic disorders, suicidal ideas, hallucinations, blurred vision, dry eyes, chest pain, hot flush, constipation, muscle twitching and muscle tension.
    - Rare (0.01-0.1%): mania, libido disorder, disorientation, chest pain, visual impairment and menstrual disorder.
    Safety:
First of all be careful to combine methylphenidate with alcohol. As this might increase its dazing effects.
In addition, it can be dangerous to drive while using this drug. As it can cause you to become drowsy, sleepy and/or dizzy. If you experiencing any of these side effects than please do not drive. This is especially true for the first few weeks you are using it.

Hi, I was just diagnosed with ADHD, and Ritalin has been an option for me to start taking, but I also have anxiety and moderate depression… I’m still trying to figure out if the anxiety is linked to the ADHD, and if the depression is linked to one of the other two. Can you tell me is Prozac and Ritalin are a good combination to take for adults? I have only found studies that it is beneficial for children. I do have a psychiatrist, but I am reaching out for others opinions, and I just to make sure that information is correct. I am really nervous to start taking medication, so I just need some help with some clarity and understanding. If Prozac isn’t a good combination with Ritalin , can you please give me another good SSRI option or maybe an SNRI option is better to help with my anxiety and depression? All of this is confusing for me. Thank you in advance.

I am still feeling quiet tired and can sleep sleep sleep the days away but my scattered brain has decreased (thank goodness!!) is tiredness a good reason for increased dosage? or what other things would make a dr increase your dosage?? thank you in advance, have a blessed day :)

Hi, do you know anything about the rate of elimination in modified release compared to instant release methylphenidate?
The instant release tablets work great and I can take them through the day. The modified release tablets make me feel like crap, but my psychiatrist would rather I take modified release. I have been reading that the rate of elimination is raster than the rate of release and can create a chemical imbalance, which is why they make me feel crappy. I think the rate of elimination is much faster with immediate release, but I can’t find any research about this. Do you happen to know anything on this subject? Many thanks!

Unless it bothers your stomach its to be taken on an empty stomach not with a meal.

I've seen that it depends on how you accustom your body reacts to it, which to me makes more sense. Start with an empty stomach but it it bothers you or whatever, take it after. Also, maybe they should take it after if they tend to forget about eating.

I have one problem with concerta, it gave me shortness of breath, I cant talk to my doctor about that, because of I'm not from US, where I live there is only one psichiatrist who believes adhd is real, insane right? Because your body needs to get used to the influx of dopamine that it's not used to, this can be really exhaustive on your internalsystem. Usually you build up methylphenidate over the course of a week starting with 5-10 mg pills (depending on your body mass index) and not starting with 20mg pills at once. FYI, this will better once your body is used to it. If it doesn't, you might have something else than adhd. I mean there are people whom get high on 20-30mg regularly, seeing those people shouldn't have "the same tolerance like you are supposed to have" because they do not take it daily, states how high this dosage actually is. Usually people test out this medicine with 5-10mg pills and I can barely believe that they actually let you start on 20mg pills. How much do you have to take daily?
Are you taking the next dose right on time? Like say... at least 30-40 minutes before the effect disappears of the previous dose. Usually I experience tiredness and rebound effects when I take my next dose too late. Depending on what you are doing at that time, the effects can render away within 4 hrs, since the effects gets burned up as you burn up the "dopamine" fuel. Usually it's about 5-6 when you're just relaxing.

I'd consult another psychiatrist or doctor to be honest and see if they have a better alternative. I'm not saying you don't have ADHD, but since the past 10 years they are very easy on diagnosing ADHD and High-functioning Autism so they can prescribe drugs you probably don't need.
I'd really go for a second opinion if that's possible or try to see if there is something else you can do to relax your brain.
(though, if you live in USA it might be very expensive. I am fortunate enough to live in socialist/liberal West-European country. so we're mostly insured for health/mental health related issues. Consults basically cost nothing for us except for the default contribution you have to pay once you receive help, which for us is only about 350/400 a year and you can pay it off in 12-24 terms depending on the insurance agency). Sadly we're not insured for specialist treatments in other countries, but that's to be expected anyway.

I just did my last Ritalin and I don't get my next prescription until November 17th. So now comes the suffering and it couldn't happen at a worse time. There's nothing to replace it except another amphetamine and it's horrible. I always come up short because how can't you I mean honestly is there anyone an adult who's prescribed Ritalin where it lasts until your next prescription is ready? The answer is no. If anyone knows of anything that can remotely take its place that you can get over the counter please let me know. Cuz I can't stand this. There are some nasal inhalers benzedrex for one which is basically an amphetamine unfortunately I can find it in the stores around here. It helps if you break open to soak the paper and get it in you. But it's still not the same. Isn't it a shame that we just can't go to the store and get what we want instead of having to go through a doctor and getting a prescription. I get 90 20 mg ones a month they generally last two weeks. Because I need it. But the law says you've got to go through the proper channels. Of course you can get as much alcohol as you want that deadly deadly awful drug alcohol is everywhere. I've never gotten into a fight while on Ritalin I've never done anything stupid I drive better I'm more productive but you can't just go to the store and get it. Now if I wanted to go and get a large bottle of bourbon and drink it and God knows what would happen that's okay. This is so wrong. That is not freedom. I live in the US the great free country but I can't get this beneficial medication anytime I want but I can get the worst drug on Earth anytime I want does this make sense to anyone? Once again if anyone out there knows anything it'll take the edge off the horrible withdrawal please let me know thank you

I think you're addicted.. if you get 90 20mgs a month then you should be using only 3 per day and not 6 a day. Please get rehab because this is completely unhealthy

@@LieutenantButtonMasher you know nothing about me. Don't judge what you don't understand. The point is that I can buy a case of bourbon and an assault rifle with armor piercing bullets and that's just fine. but I can't get the medications I have been prescribed for 7 years because I moved to a redneck state with far less freedom than most countries on earth. But at least the drug dealers are happy. And I'm thankful for them. they have far more integrity and intelligence than most doctors I've met who are basically corrupt morons and drug addicts as well.

396mg of Ritalin is likely a lethal dose for the average person. Given the maximum legal dose (Australia) is 40mg in instant release, taking almost 10 times the legal dose is likely invariably fatal should you weigh less than maybe 150kg and have extremely strong cardiovascular fortitude. Stay safe.
