Ritalin

  • Ritalin or methylphenidate was initially approved about 65 years ago yet remains among the top 50 prescribed medicines in American. Ritalin ranks just behind asthma medicines as the second most common long term prescription agent for children. The main indication for Ritalin is ADHD - attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Several different forms of Ritalin exist - an immediate release form, a sustained release version and a long acting capsule. The likelihood of abuse and dependence generally appears at a dose of Ritalin higher than necessary to control symptoms of AHDH. Difficulty sleeping, mood disorders, restlessness, and interference with both linear growth and weight gain are well established side effects.
Approximately half of children and adults diagnosed with ADHD will begin drug therapy. Diagnosis of ADHD remains about 20 times more common in America compared to many European countries. In some European countries Ritalin is not legally available.
Some argue that the explosive surge of ADHD in America may be related to overdiagnosis and lack of recognition of underlying social or family issues. Drug company influence in the medical community, advertising and pharmaceutical involvement in medical research might inflate the rate of diagnosis. At present 1 in every 5 boys carry the diagnosis of ADHD with the vast majority also being diagnosed with other psychiatric diseases as well.

One of my sons has taken methylphenidate for 1 year for his ADHD. It’s night and day. He actually likes school now, is on the principles list. Yes, it does effect appetite. I know adults who have taken it their whole lives. My son is off meds on the weekend and during all vacations. Yes, you need to be under supervision of a physician. We monitor his growth and any possible side effects. It took us seeing a child psychiatrist for 2 years before taking the meds.

The right dose of the right medication can be incredibly transforming. The wrong dose of the wrong meds can also be transforming, but often not in a good way. One of the most difficult things in psychiatry is willing to try different things. It can be frustrating. And to be fair, sometimes, for some, the side effects aren't worth it. But I think the stimulants can offer benefit if used properly. As for risk factors, any good doctor would have a patient get EKGs and physical etc before using stimulants. Frankly, even coffee could kill someone with a heart problem. Everything in moderation. Anyway, glad it's helped.

@@strongalex285 OK so from your advice I can use heroin in moderation right? What about fentanyl? Is meth OK in moderation? You really should listen to this entire presentation to the end. I was just like your child apparently. I was diagnosed when I was five was given the medication and a family member of mine started to abuse it and take my meds so I was only on it at school and off of it when I was at home.. I was on it till I was about 14 and I was sent away to a wilderness educational camp where their stipulation was you cannot be on any prescription medication. At least narcotics. What you’re doing is you’re giving your son a low dosage of meth basically. Sure it’ll make him focus on boring stuff and be able to exceed at an interesting tasks. But there are plenty of other ways to get him to that point where he can do that without giving him chemical substances. Just because a doctor says it’s good does not mean it is really good! Do you know what else transforms life? God. Yahweh Jesus Christ the Bible. God changed my life 100 million times better than Ritalin could ever do.. There are better ways to help your child without give him chemical substances. I think that’s a very lazy alternative! I think it’s an absolute last resort!

It makes a night and day difference in me. I’m 35 and I have been using a form of this since I was 8 years old lol. I tried to come off it when I was adult, just to see how I would do. It short order I was overly energetic, lost my keys everyday, house a mess, would scroll endlessly on my phone, I couldn’t stay on task and talked everyone’s ear off lol. After two days of being on it again, my house is clean, I stay on task, I’m so calm, I’m perfectly fine just sitting there without finding a need to get up every five seconds. My sleep even improved from not having racing thoughts. Honestly I wish I didn’t have to take it, but I do and accepted it. That’s okay, I view it as eye glasses, wish I didn’t need to wear them, but I need to see clearly. Also I never got the euphoria off of it, simply made me calm.

Presented with amazing clarity. I was diagnosed with ADD as a teen but refused medicating. Now an adult with my own children - two of whom Ritalin has been suggested - I thought to spare them the chaotic life I've had. I asked them if they wanted to try medication. They both said NO! I decided to try it as an adult who dropped out of college several times. The result has been astounding! I wish I had at least tried it earlier in life because I am very noticeably more effective - especially in the areas of executive functioning. Although I told no one except my husband - everyone noticed! Of course my kiddos who are now adults, have become more open to the idea of medication. They can make their own informed decisions now. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this generational experiment. Thank you for this video. It has been most enlightening!

I was diagnosed with excessive daytime sleepiness which is a form of narcolepsy back in 2015. I was prescribed Xyrem; this drug would knock me out at night but had a lot of sodium in it. I then took myself off the medication due to the amount of sodium and was just prescribed Ritalin. The first day I took Ritalin I noticed a big difference. I actually wanted to do things, I felt great and didn’t feel like sleeping. How long have you been on the medicine? Any side effects?

I don’t feel euphoric on 20mg slow release twice per day.
Early on I thought Ritalin was effective but now I’m thinking maybe I was imagining it like a placebo effect.

The reason it’s used less in Europe than the US is because education is different. In Europe children do more group work until the 6th grade as opposed to the children in the US.

Attention: Mixing with excessive amounts of kratom induces depression. Take care.

Parents please be aware of how your child is effected by this drug. It ruined my middle school experience. Eventually, I would put it under my tongue and spit it out.

Meaning its definitely not snake oil, no matter if your second assertion is true. And to the second assertion itself - why? Do you also believe other conspiracy theories in general? Do you think the tens of thousands of medical profesionals are in it to harm people? Do you think all the people that take it are idiots? Milions of people are using some kind of ADHD medication, researched by thousands of scientist and prescribed by tens of thousands of doctors. But YOU know the truth. They are all stupid. They did not do the research you have done. They all fail to see the OBVIOUS ploy... there is no medical issue they need fixed by the medication... They are just so stupid, that they fell for it and got addicted to something that doesnt help them, only serves to harm them. Is that what you think?

As someone who has lived for 48 years with undiagnosed ADHD, I can promise you that the depression, anxiety, horrible memory (literally forgetting my train of thought mid-sentence on a daily basis), and so forth were FAR WORSE than any side effect from Ritalin. Ritalin has changed my life. It took away my depression and anxiety. It let me think clearly for the first time ever. I finally feel like I am living instead of existing. Stigmatizing Ritalin is NOT doing anyone any good and is instead dooming those who believe you to a lifetime of misery.

Well, that was your experience, and it's very normal for people with ADHD to have to try different meds & dosages before they find one that works for them. I started taking Ritalin recently (1 and 1/2 years ago) and my life has never been better, I'm doing alright in college (first time in my academic life) and a myriad of other things.

In my country, generally our shrinks don't or won't prescribe anything other than dexamphetimine to begin with. It's when I check out TH-cam videos of other people's stories. I see being juggled around with other adhd stims, especially in the USA. There just seems more risk, side effects & time waisted b4 people are in a better place for being properly medicated for adhd?
