I totally agree. Just tap them out which works fine. I would never put a cactus in a plastic pot as the roots rot off more easily, clay pots all the way.

My husband and I grew three cereus cacti from cuttings in pots and wanted to transplant them in our yard. Your video was the best I found on the internet. Your visuals and explanations were extremely helpful. I didn't need to break the pot I had leftover bubble wrap I used in addition to the newspaper. It worked like a charm. Thank you and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Excellent job and I love your accent!

Hi Lyn: Using newspaper is such a perfectly effective and simple idea I only wish I would have seen your video sooner! (been pricked through gloves many times) I really enjoy your videos and can listen to you talk all day. It also absolutely amazes me that in rain soaked Ireland you can maintain such a magnificent cacti collection. You really know your stuff. Thank you and keep up the good work.

***** Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment :-) I agree gloves are hopeless with the spines, they go straight through them and get stuck on them, soooo painful LOL! Yes growing these Desert plants are a real challenge here in Ireland with all the rain and damp air LOL! I often dream of living in a warm and dry sunny climate where I can grow them all outdoors in the garden instead of behind glass and in the house, but then I think part of the challenge and enjoyment of growing these plants is keeping them healthy and happy despite the conditions :-) Thanks so much for watching and have a MAGNIFICENT day ahead today :-) XXXX

Well, it’s official. I now understand why plastic is preferred. I was repotting this morning from 3 inch terra cotta to 4 inch pots and was greeted by a mass of roots clinging to the walls of the pots! I thought of you and quickly decided that plastic was the way to go. Next repotting should be much easier...but I’m not looking forward to having to repot the rest of my collection. Yup, you guessed it. All are currently in terra cotta pots. Bleh!

Hi Kevin, Clay pots can be such a pain due to the roots clinging to the sides, and I used to love clay pots as they look so nice and they dry out faster but decided that plastic is better due to the roots sticking to the clay, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and PLANT POWER happiness and have a wonderful Friday XXXX

I am absolutly in love with that round cactus you got there! What on earth is it?
I have 10 cacti/ succulensucculents myself and currently I'm trying to save my Eve's Pin from a bought of overwatering. I thought watering my plants once a week every Sunday was okay and Sangria ( Eve's Pin ) started getting wrinkly. I thought it may have been from being underwatered, but I still watered her once a week. Turns out an Eve's Pin needs water once every 10 - 14 days! I let her and Mister Harry, ( He is a cat us with four nubs that was getting swollen and his soil has not drying out thanks to the soil and being in a glazed pot ) I let them both dry their soil out. Mister Harry is no longer swollen but Sangria my Eve's Pin is a little mushy and wrinkled. Not discolored wich is a good sign. Right now I have her in a dark place for a day or two hoping she'll become solid again and We'll work out those wrinkles soon. :/
But yes, what is that delightfully round Cacti called? XD

Hi there Jason :-) Thanks for watching + for the questions, yes it is possible to save a clay pot if you can gently loosen the soil around the edges of the pot first, but I always find by doing this you can damage the roots as the roots tend to cling to the clay + I find it safer + easier to break the pot. When re potting to a bigger pot I always find it best to transfer it to just the next size up as cacti can be very prone to rotting if they are kept in too big of a pot than CONTINUED

Hi Lynn, Just found your website what a lovley cheerful girl you are. I will watch you more now. About 40 yrs ago he was about 10 at the time. our son got into cacti growing, he joined the local society, they all grew them in square pots, they could be placed together thus taking up less room, also looked neater,. I still have a lot of them and I am trying my streptocarpus in them. I buy lithops now and again.

Hi - Thank you for the info. Would you ever separate those stems when they are younger and shorter? I have a small pot about 10cm in diametre, with 6 of those in at around 15cm tall. Should I leave all 6 'tall cacti' in the one pot do you think?
Might also be a silly question, but is there any recommended way to encourage them to grow tall like yours?

Hey Lyn! One question. What do you do with really small cacti with a pot that are maybe 2 and a half or 2 inches wide?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Michael :-D if the cacti are still very small, I always leave them in the same pot until they are much bigger, if the cacti are a lot smaller than the size of the pot, I make sure that I am extra careful with the watering, and only water around the base of the cactus and not the whole of the soil in the pot, you can transplant them into a smaller pot but when cacti are very young it may be best to leave them in the same pot even if the pot is bigger than ideal for them, and be extra careful with the watering, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

I have a question I can’t seem to find a good answer on with google searches. So I have like a 5’ tall cereus peruvianus in my living room and he needs a new pot. I recently got him and he has three columns total and two that are leaning at like a 40 degree angel from the base. (As in they seem to have grown that way?) is it possible to separate them and gently separate the roots without killing them so they can be repotted more upright? The lean makes him a little dangerous to move sometimes and I worry about the strain to the base as he gets taller. Thank you! I really love your videos they’re super helpful.

A faster method of filling the sides is to use a flexible sheet of hard plastic, add some your soil, bend, lift and slide the soil off along the sides. Do this all around the edges and tamp. Repeat until desired depth of soil is achieved.

    • @desertplantsofavalon

Hi Debra :-D yes I have an Eve's needle cactus, although mine has never flowered yet, they can be difficult to get to flower, but they love plenty of sunshine and monthly fertilising in Spring and Summer, I like to use a weak strength fertilizer for tomatoes for my cacti as the extra potassium gives them a boost for flowering but these Eve's Needle cacti will usually flower when they get to be over 2-3 feet high, and it will be wonderful to see flowers on ours in the near future :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Northern California for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

There is an English Gardner I watched a show where he went around and redid Gardens for people and help them learn how to plant and grow plants.
He had a trick of taking the plant out of the pot placing the pot in the next size up or whatever he was planting it in pack the dirt around it pull the pot out and just sit the plant in and just do some light touch up look so simple with cactus it might be a good idea to make sure you don't have air pockets in there or whatever might want to check him out and give it a try I do not know his name sorry about that.

You don't have to crack the pot... just take a flat head screw driver, push it down in at the edge through the soil to the bottom of the pot, and do this about four or five times around the circumference of the pot..
and turn it up sidedown, it'll come out easily with a pat. I ran into the same problem with very rootbound column... I was shaking it upsidedown and it wouldn't come out! Now I just do this, works every time no problem.
Also, why don't you use bigger pots?

Hi I recently purchased a cactus from Lowe's and it appears be rotting and I've only had it for a week and I have a few questions about it, so it's a small Irishman cactus and the rot only goes up about a centimeter but is there any way that the roots would still be alive that being said what color should they be as it's roots are a light brown color. If I need to cut off the rot how far past it should I cut? I presume the cactus was over watered as the soil was very wet, if I cut off the rot how long will it be before New roots come in and what color should the callous be what when it starts to form? Sorry if that's a lot of questions and thank you!
