There is definitely a hint of Tolkiens Orcs in the design of these guys, they're more of Mordor than of Mork. Which is what I think separates them from the other orks, even the fairly newer ranges like Gloomspite Gitz and Orruk Warclans have carried on that innate "Orkiness" you spoke about. In regards to your point about skin tones, I think moving away from the typical green helps. I painted up a Kruleboy with a pale, almost white skin tone and it looked even less like an Ork. It kind of became it's own thing and I much preferred the effect it had on the miniature overall.
Thanks for the detailed and concise breakdown on these. It is a much more useful rundown for people looking to get into this range.

Mordor was my immediate thought as well. I really like the look myself, but I am also brand new to Warhammer and don't have much previous biases. I will say that agree these guys feel like they belong in their own army seperate from other Ork Boyz.

It's funny, I think people like orks and orrucs for different reasons, I personally ALMOST loved the look of the other 40k and AoS orks, but to me they were a bit too goofy. One of my favourite things about collecting an army in this hobby is, collecting something badass, with just a hint of absurdity. For me, these new orruks actually got the sweet spot to a point where I am excited to start collecting them! I get where you're coming from though, it's a bit disappointing if something that was already hitting the sweet spot for you isn't any more. Thanks for making this video and sharing your thoughts! I love learning about the different reasons people love the hobby!

    • @OlrikMeister
      @OlrikMeister 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

These guys are the perfect opposite of normal orks. These guys are Kunnin and Brutal instead of Brutal and Kunnin same with other aspects. They look mean, lean and ready to stab you in the back instead of goofy, buff and smiling while smashing you in the face. I would be afraid of these and take them serious in a fight while normal orks are fun and goofy. Both portray the opposites perfectly. But a bit more glee in their faces and a slight smirk would have been appreciated.

Same, I'm glad somebody else said it. I never liked orcs being as goofy as they are, it always makes it feel a bit stupid when a supposed savage, brutal horde of destruction are all goofy and silly. It works better in Oldhammer, and in 40K since there is a significant degree of satire to the whole setting, but Age of Sigmar always felt like it's played pretty straight. There's still factions like the Gloomspite Gits if you want something more silly, but I think the more serious and, well, krule style fits orruks in AoS much better.

It's really frustrating how often GW makes pre-fab bases part of the feet these days. It really wouldn't be that much harder to include the "scenic" base bit, with a tab to slot the feet in. And it'd allow for a lot more creativity.

    • @printandplaygamer7134

The argument about the orcs not smiling is really silly, from mine own collection of old and new orcs and from what I've seen online, I have found 2 orcs smiling. The maniak weirdnob for bonesplitterz and an old fantasy orc shaman. Most orcs are scowling, growling and/or shouting much like these orcs. Obviously these orruks are different from the old orcs but their build honestly remind me a lot of the old artwork and models from the 80s. Back then they weren't just massive slabs of muscle but more lanky and vicious looking.
I feel like they fit well in with the orruks, contrasting well against the other orruks while still having some familiar traits. A lot more interesting than just more of the same old same old.
I love the hulking brutes from the late fantasy. But the grognards saying these aren't real orcs just sound like old men shouting at the sky.

Speaking as someone completely new to the hobby, who also by complete chance got a half-set of already assembled Hobgrots second-hand (partially because they came really cheap and I couldn't find any of the more classic bulkier ones that weren't already painted - and it was before I found out you can safely remove paint) - I really like them.
They got this whole mean, ready-for-war "come at me bro" attitude to them, and all the faces reflect that, so I painted them all dirty and dark-green, instead of what the box-art shows you. Though they're really damn small and it was a pain in the ass to paint them as my first mini painting experience, I liked them so much that - because my half-set has a few duplicates - I got me another full set with all the parts to make my way and paint better now that I've had some practice.

I respect that your longevity in these games and what you have come to expect as a long time fan matters. I think I would feel the same way if I saw such a change. But as someone new to minis relatively, and completely a noob to Warhammer, these models feel so much more like orcs and hobgoblins that I have needed as D&D miniatures than the goofy silly "orukks" that Games Workshop have made their own. I just love these new Kruleboyz

A great review. Thanks for taking the time to thoughtfully share as always. As a longtime LOTR fan, these figures strike me very much as Peter Jackson orcs and less so Warhammer orcs. It's akin to the tonal shift between The Hobbit goblins and orcs and then the Moria goblins and Isengard orcs. Where are the songs??? Where's the silly king?! This will be the first army I paint after I half-assembled a Skaven Start Collecting box but then lost it, so I'm eagerly soaking up any inspiration and help I can. I really love the vibrant skin tones and different colors of armor.

Glad to see you give them a fair shake to see how they struck you. As someone who is still very new to GW games, I guess my head canon for them is they have simply evolved differently from the main ork/orruk line (to put it in MtG terms maybe these guys are GB mindset vs mono red) and that is why they are far more serious. I am doing a test paint with some dark tan with hits of green for the skin and like it so far.
    Great job as always sir!

That is an eye-meltingly bright line up of gritz and boyz. For these minis, maybe a maggot-white skin would be the way to go; really leaning in to the grim-dark aesthetic.

I've not been interpreting them as classic hammer orcs, or Orruks for that matter, I saw somewhere referring to the AOS version of hobgoblins and that was what made them click for me, instead of them being the loveable gorilla orcs or wacky goblins plus my love for the chaos dorfs. Color scheme wise, I'm taking inspiration from the pale orc in the hobbit, some Celt blue woad, and probably yellow armor. I also wish i could have a whole army of warg riders, I mean gnashtoofs

In the 90s I played 40k exclusively, but a friend finally goaded me into playing Warhammer Fantasy. I told him I'd only play if the army I had was "simply fun". I read over some of the lists, and landed on orcs & goblins. Between semi-cowardly madcap gobbos, snarling greenskin animosity, ludicrously unreliable war engines, tiny-yet-unbreakable snotlings, stupid yet dangerous trolls and lumbering giants, they were a non-stop kneeslapper of an army list to bring to the table. These Kruleboyz are nice models, but I agree that they ain't the fun greenskins of old.

i personally really like these, and I like that they are quite serious - that being said, the silliness of the orkz is one of the best things about them imo, so i do hope that this is an exception and not the new rule. i think a good mix of both would be perfect! it makes the serious orkz look more serious and the silly orkz look more silly in comparison. of course, the ideal scenario is that GW gives every ork player the necessary bits and therefore the choice of whether they want to play serious orkz or silly orkz, but that's probably not gonna happen.

I mean, the silliness gripe is a bit... silly?? Given the theme of this Ork schism I like the more serious look, that’s what make these KRUEL BOYZ. Theyre a small but distinct type of Ork in the mortal realms. These lads dont have much to smile about - they’re skinny, have to rely on sneaky tactics and live in swamps. What would be funny is seeing them paired with the classic goofy fun Orks. The contrast could provide an extra layer of comedy.

If you want classic Warhammer Fantasy Orks, you have Ironjawz or Bonesplitterz. And if you want whimsical fantasy, you have Gloomspite Gitz
