Kitbash Your Duplicates! The Easiest Conversions for Extra Copies of Mono-Pose Miniatures

  • Modern plastic models are great, but they’re often locked into a single pose! You can un-twin your collection by making simple modifications. There are a handful of kitbashing strategies to easily change the silhouette and overall appearance of duplicate models. This is more straightforward than you might think, and it’s a lot of fun! In this video I’ll show you the power of wrists, shoulders, weapons, necks, elbows, and beyond! This video is focused on Chaos Warriors from Warhammer Age of Sigmar and some Primaris Space Marines from Warhammer 40k, but the kit bashing lessons can apply to any model kit.

    A trick for 3d printers that someone told me is if you're printing models for an army and you need to print duplicates, mirror the model in your 3d printing program. Someone holding their weapon in their left hand rather than their right hand really helps hide twin poses and load outs.

      @thrrax 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A lot of 3D modelers make multi part models anyway. Even if you count simple variants like shields, one-hand weapons and simple hands/fists, you already have a lot of variation. Once you go into head, torso and feet variations, you're in business.
      And if you discount the initial investment for the printer and the material, you save a shitload of money, compared to what GW sells, for example. Although I've seen way more expensive stuff than what GW sells.

    That digression about Space Marines makes me think: if you could chop off pegs to make arms more classically modular anyway, could you do that _between_ kits? Take a copy of the Intercessor and Assault Intercessor kits. Then, swap the sets of arms. So you'd have Intercessors with running poses, and Assault Intercessors with standing poses.

      I have mixed feelings. I did exactly what Brent just did with his chaos warriors, with 40 of the new orks a few years ago. And because of the more dynamic poses of the newer orks the end results look much better than any of my previous orks made with the older multi-part kits. I loved the fact that so many of the bits from the older kits were interchangeable; you could use your leftover bits from one kit (or even the old fantasy orcs) and use them to spice up a group of boyz; but most of the silhouettes were still very 'samey'. I still use all the old bits (except torsos and legs) in my conversions of the new boyz kits.

    This! I did this exact same process with my 40K Ork boyz a couple years ago, jeweler's saw and all. I have been a strong advocate for using a jeweler's saw (over that of clippers) whenever the topic of conversions come up. When the "new" mono-pose ork boyz came out I bought 2 of the combat patrol boxes, I had 4 copies of 10 different sculpts to have to differentiate. And I pretty much did the exact same thing, I made one of each exactly as instructed, and then I went to town converting the others.

      @@GoobertownHobbies - "the combat patrol had duplicates in the box!??" Yes it did. While I was initially put off by the new monopose orkz, it really wasn't difficult, and was a fun exercise to convert the duplicates. And because of the much more dynamic poses I have come to actually prefer the new boyz models, with one caveat, you must also have plenty of the older bits laying around to kitbash with. If I was just getting started and didn't already have a sufficient bits box, the lack of options with the new kits to swap in and out, would be crushingly frustrating. Luckily I have been collecting orkz since 3rd ed (2000-2001) and have what some might describe as too many bits; no self-respecting ork collector would ever say such a thing, but someone who collects one of the "stuntier" armies might.

    I've bee doing these kinds of conversions for years now, but it's always nice to get more inspiration from others. Monopose and especially starter set models are a really nice challenge.
    I can, however, understand that some people that don't enjoy the building aspect of the hobby as much may be frustrated with them.
    For cutting joints, I usually prefer my sharp hobby knife over clippers, if I want to preserve both sides.
    If there is a lot of space to fill in, sprue goo may be a better choice than just plastic glue, as it can act as a filler on top of providing the same effect plastic glue does.
    When drilling in or otherwise hollowing out a hidden area of a model to alter the hidden joint, pieces of the sprue itself may bee good substitutes for hidden sections of the arms, if these are missing on the selected new part.
    On the Space Marine intermission: I like to glue the pins back into the shoulders after removing them from the torso, so I have the full surface for the glue to work with and not the hole in the middle.
    I've long reached the conclusion that a big part of what makes the Primaris Range so much better looking to me than the old multipose models is actually the fact that legs and torso are connected. The old models had the ability to freely rotate at the hip, but compared to the new models it just looks silly how the belt and everything upwards just stays static as opposed to the different layers of the armor moving to accommodate the movement of the wearer.
    Also, funny how you kept coming back to the thing about twins finding other twins and taking their heads. I'm not sure the twin aspect is the worst part of the interaction though, at least one set of twins may have more pressing issues.

    This is one of the first things I did when I got into the hobby! The Deathwing terminators from the starter kit are four unique sculpts, and one duplicate. No idea why they did it that way, but the twins bothered me, so one of them got their bolter and head rotated, and power fist replaced. And I've been doing small conversions on basically every single model I've owned ever since.

    • @GoobertownHobbies

  • @PrimordialNightmare

    "you can't have twins seeking out other twins and taking their heads" while I agree 100% I think it would be hilarious to go completely overboard with it, exchange minis with other collectors and make an entire unit, if not all chaos warriors, the same guy with the same head.
    It's going to be really silly, but thistime intentional. and thinking about it some more,it would probably fuck with whomever poor soul is facing these guys.
    Maybe it's Tzeentch shenanigans.

    I just started messing with models/learning 40k this month and I went with Orks as my army since I am inexperienced and figured with the lore Orks leave a lot of room for bad painting and fun customization. First thing I did was modify the hell out of a squad of boyz and quickly realized conversions are my jam. Loved cutting bits and bobs off, gluing new stuff on, and coming up with little back story bits for all my boyz. Also, I'm not as bad a painter as I expected to be (as long as it takes me a week per model)

  • @KiwiTheIguana
    @KiwiTheIguana 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    A week or so back I picked up the freshly OOP Ork Combat Patrol, and strove to do something like this with the second monopose boyz squad, and while not the most noticeable thing in the world, there are no exact duplicates to be found, which is satisfying to me even if nobody else notices.

    For swaps like the axe-to-the-other-hand, I would suggest drilling a shallow hole in the hand that is about the size of the axe haft, rather than gluing it on flat. You'll get a much better bond, especially when using plastic glue.
    I find it's a nice alternative to pinning when the weapon haft is very thin.

    I've not done much kitbashing myself yet, but its FUN! The deathwing terminator that I got for free this month got a chainsword in his offhand now instead of a shield (its his parrying dagger.), and I've done a few modifications for my Voidscarred so they fit their self-made spaceship bases (no more tactical rocks!), and so that I have ALL specialists instead of 2 gunners. One of the gunners has a skin-cloak and is the obvious Drukhari member of the kill team, so I made him the dual sword wielding specialist by just swapping some arms around.

    But somehow swapping arms on the assault intercessors never occured to me. They are not glued, so i might be able to pull it off, but changing the head poses will take quite some work now 😅

    This is an amazing video about one of my favorite parts of the hobby. I hate having my models look like each other as well as everyone else's. You missed a really impactful easy conversion which is to tilt the model in a new way on the base. It is amazing the different poses you can get that way. Often just requires shaving the feet at a slight angle to create the new pose.
