They were my very first army this year and painting the Cavaliers was almost my breaking point about 3 months in when the Spearhead released. Then I never learned my lesson and painted 2100 points of Hedonites of Slaanesh and just got my hands on Genestealer Cult.

As someone who painted tons of 40K then started aos and lumineth, I can confirm that they make you feel like you have never painted a day in your life. 3 hours of painting gold trim specs away from pure white, such pain.
All the best AOS models look brilliant with a relatively simple paint scheme that takes advantage of how well sculpted they are. Seraphon, Skaven, Nighthaunts all look gorgeous with just a few well-chosen colors and a shade.

My first army in warhammer was blades of khorne from the original starter box. Vince’s reaction to “Blades of Khorne” was my reaction to thinking about painting my models after I got about 10 bloodreaver models into my painting journey. I painted roughly 1000 points of khorne mortals and never finished. Absolute miserable experience. I played with a half painted army all the way up until 3rd edition when I got into the death factions. Between the FEC army box release and November of this year, I’ve painted 3 armies. I will never enter the chaos trim zone again. It’s absolutely miserable.
As a Thousand Sons player who started the journey about mid last year, I'm now finishing the last of my K-Sons and feel the pain. Granted, it was a slow journey, I'm not exactly painting every week and have roughly 3k points. But I swear to god, a single rubric is absolutely dreadful from a complexity point. I banged out 6 tzaangor enlightened with a shaman in 2 days, but a 5-man flamer squad still felt worse and took longer, despite being a significantly simpler paintjob. I'm almost tempted to pick up my knight abominant, see if what Brad said about Chaos Knights is true
I got into IDK this year, and I do think there are workarounds for their models to avoid them being an absolute nightmare to paint. For example, if you settle on one uniform color for all their armor and weapons, you've got a surprising amount of the models covered right away. The eels are surprisingly easy and fun to paint, they take to drybrushing quite well and you can paint them all sorts of colors and still have it look good. Not that there aren't absolute headaches still: the Thrallmaster and the Reavers are just little bits piled upon little bits.
I 100% agree with Vince on OBR as someone who actually did start with them- They take contrasts and speedpaints really nicely, but also offer plenty of opportunities to learn edge highlighting on their shields and cloth. They can go as simple or complex as you’re willing to make them. My skills have definitely improved because of it.

I love painting my Seraphon. I did my first batch in a fairly typical blue scheme, but there is a lot of flexibility. I am working on 10 tiger striped red and black Saurus Warriors right now.

I strongly agree with a lot of this. My first Sigmar minis were Stormcast and Nighthaunt (latter were a pain to assemble because of their weird-shaped body halves but both sets were easy to paint), but my first main was Slaanesh. That was An Experience, both to assemble and to paint, but I'm really proud of the end result even as I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, same as with my Deepkin experience, and I've assumed Elves in general + Slaanesh because of his "excess!!!!!!111" gimmick were formidable to paint.
Didn't they say the hoverdwarf box was phenomenal value and contained one of them big ol' boats for standard Spearhead cost? Sounds like a deal to me (if you like hoverdwarves)!
The section on BoK is so perfect. The more you paint a Blood Warrior, the more trim you discover. There is almost no end to it, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

For the Idoneth, I have found a lot of the complexity of the armor can be cheated by using shades. My basic armor is Runelord Brass with Coelia Greenshade over it and it gives it a cool "tarnished bronze" look that seeps into all of those recesses in the armor and does like 90% of the job shading and hghlighting for me. But the skin and all of the baubles and trinkets are a pain I agree (especially the trim on the tabards). The sea creatures on the other hand are a treat, They're a blank canvas for whatever gradients or patterns you want to try, I've been using my eels to practice wet-blending.
Listening to this episode while painting my DoK spearhead. I just finished my LRL spearhead yesterday. I wish this episode came out before I bought those boxes 😂 But I love the look of both armies, so I have no regrets
It's great seeing you guys collab with the Technomancer Vincey V! I was surprised to see where the Soulblight were ranked, I would have thought they were closer to Cities of Sigmar for difficulty because of all the vampires with their pieces of flair and accessories.

My sister and I just got into AOS with nighthaunt and stormcast so it's good to hear we should have an ok time painting.

Funnily enough, nighthaunts got me into AOS because of Slayer Miniatures video on them. My first nighthaunts were the spirit hosts.
