Hi Brent. If I might offer you some constructive advice on why the cobblestones might seem a little off - I think by doing it the way you are, the bricks become quite "pillowy". That is, by using a blade to make the mortar lines, the bricks edges curve in. I understand you don't like resin bases or rollers, and that you like the weight of the milliput, so my advice would be to make individual bricks from milliput (make a little, long cuboid "mould"; push in the milliput; cut out little rectangular bricks *roughly* same thickne). This way, you get the weight - and the inevitable little discrepancies in brick thickness and ggap between brick will mean a much more organic, realistic look. It would of course be even easier to do this with foam! And you could add a heavy steel washer to the bottom for extra weight! But, milliput would totally work too :)
I think you're right. There's some bolt action players around here that make piles of loose bricks as terrain, I should figure out how they make em. Otherwise I need to up my skills so the bricks don't get quite so round...

Thanks for this. I've been struggling a lot with mental health recently and the end of this year has been especially hard. Your videos are always a bright spot in my week. They are always relaxing, and fun to paint along with.
Thank you Brent. Goobertown has not only been a nice source of hobby inspiration and motivation, but a good positive place to chill that has helped my mental health a lot during this last year that has been so brutal for so many. I have 6 or so various hobby projects that seem to have all slowed down and fallen by the wayside, and I feel motivated to try and jump start them and view the remaining covid times as a hobby opportunity instead of just counting down the days until post-vaccine times. It's good to look forward to the light at the end of the tunnel, but thank you for reminding me to look out for positive opportunities in the journey along the way and live a little happier in the moment as well.
Thank you Brent for being a little part of my slowly fracturing sanity. On my second round of working from home this year and your videos have been a big help to me in the background of my daily grind.
To me, Goobertown and Brent are the true spirit of mini painting. Always cheers me up and gets me in the mood for painting when I see his videos! Also, the cats are soooooo cute
You sir, are definitely a man who would be great to know in person, more overly be a close friend. Love your optimistic and inspirational content. Salutes from Spain. :)
Hi Brent, i just wanted to leave a comment for you as recently you’ve really helped me out a lot. This might be a long but it’s kind of a big thank you for what you do, and how much you’ve helped me grow as a painter. At the start of this year before the pandemic my love for warhammer returned, after 8 years I finally wanted to get back into the hobby! And I did! The journey from then to now has been great, I’ve learnt to take care of my brushes, how to thin my paints and different techniques such as dry brushing or edge highlighting. I’m definitely not talented but I am proud of what I’m able to do. For the the last few months I’ve been on a small break whilst I wait to afford some new paints and brushes and other supplies but I’ve finally gotten those supplies! Mentally things have been hard but I took things easy and I made sure to play your videos whilst I painted, you’ve really helped me to grow my confidence and to try new things. It’s okay if my work isn’t like someone else’s, it’s mine and as long as I’m proud of it then that’s all that matters. I’ll keep learning and trying my best to improve! But your videos were a great help to me, I had trouble dealing with the anxiety and fear of messing up for a while so I want to thank you for being a calming voice in my ear whilst I paint my minis. Today was an important day for me especially, I’ve been dealing with a lot of anxiety recently from starting a new job and finally having the capability to paint again. Your soothing videos really helped ease the anxiety however, today I took it easy and slow and just painted what I loved. I took inspiration from your video on how to choose colours, and used my space marines as a little testing ground I guess. I don’t have much love for space marines but I do want to use them, so today I painted one up and I just felt pride at what I accomplished. Your videos continue to be a great help to me and many others and I’m so thankful for every thing you do. I’ve recently ordered some howling banshees and Incubi which I can’t wait to paint! Although I still need to figure out what colours speak to me most! Right now I thought a mix of dark red and gold would be perfect whilst utilising some wonderful tesseract green for any glowing areas or eyes! I’m also going to try paint some white too! As last time sadly didn’t go so well. Anyway away from that tangent I just want you to know that what you do is inspiring to me beyond what I can describe, it’s a sense of calming and happiness. That everything will be okay and I shouldn’t judge myself too harshly. Thank you Brent, for your amazing content and your willingness to help out other painters and teach new things. P.S I’m not sure if this was very coherent or if it was fine! But I hope I got the message across. Again thank you Brent you really are a much needed part of this community who I’m very grateful for.
I do not know why, but hearing Brent call the stomach of a fearsome Choas demon a "tum-tum" has been one of the most amusing I have heard lately. Good luck with your great project, I hope to get some of my own projects done too in the following months!
Another really encouraging video, thanks Brent. The one thing I'd say about your plan is 'stay connected' - get on calls with your friends, family and hobby collaborators regularly, or even as you paint; sometimes even silent solidarity has power. Thanks again for all your work on the channel, looking forward to more videos from you as we head into the new year.
I was going to say, it would be quick work to print out a big ol stamp for the brick pattern. Just linear pattern some rectangles and hit print. Probably a little mold release on the stamp would make the stamping work with modeling putty? I've never tried it.
That turquoise blue with the orange of the armour looks great. Especially great when he's amongst the troops. The purple is lovely too, it's a lovely natural shade that doesn't look like a dead,, flesh purple which I always fall into the trap of doing without looking bright Genestealery. Lovely positive comments too. I'm in agreement, as someone who suffers from mental health problems this year and Christmas has been especially tough, but having the mindset of having more hobby time is getting me through as well as the support of the family I can see and through good ole goobers like yourself. You're a good guy man and many aswell as me appreciate what you do, maybe more than you know. So cheers from here in the UK.
I really havt to say that your positive attitude is really rubbing off. I’m happy that someone can point out some positive facts in these dark times. Love the video and I hope you bless us with your yellow warriors again soon
Just want to say you have been a massive inspiration for me, both for the hobby and my mental health , thank you so much. and good luck with the slaves to darkness army. i look forward to seeing the progress.
I found my way to your channel from Real Terrain Hobbies and I stayed for the voice overs. Your voice is so soothing. You are like the Bob Ross of mini painting. Thanks for entertaining and relaxing content.
First, I really like that color scheme for your army. Second, I have taken this time to increase my paint time, mainly because I have no where to go. Friends have commented that my painting has been getting better. I really don't notice that, but I do notice it takes less time per model and I'm going back to fix things less. Thanks for everything!
I would love a terrain and basing video! That's the part of the hobby I struggle most to conceptualize, and I find myself going overboard with basing decoration.
That cobblestone base technique is 1000 IQ. But seeing the knife come out, and then a bandaid go on reminds us that even Brent “Goobertown” Hobbies is a mortal man.
Hi Brent! About you not liking the current bases, there is a very similar way to do them, that might just be different enough. Rolling out a big sheet of milliput over a sturdy flat surface covered with clingfilm wrap (that stuff used in the kitchen to cover left-over food before stuffing it in the fridge, krimpfolie, in case you Dutch is better than my English) then put the texture you like on there. (Might also help with the scale continuity). Leave it to dry overnight, peel it off the foil and break it apart into irregular shapes. Then glue these broken shapes onto the bases, to make them less uniform. This makes their conquered city look a lot more chaotic and broken, and it's easy to fill up the uncovered parts of the bases with rocks, rubble and texture paste to complete the things. This could mix well with the current bases too. Not everyone happens to walk on a broken or pristine piece of road at the exact same time anyway.
Old sprue can easily be chopped up to use as bricks and other detritus! As for spacing, I recommend cutting a piece of cardstock or plasticard to your desired width, then you can do your first cobblestone line in the middle of the base, and use it to space out the brick rows in either direction. If you use plasticard you can even then use that to do the perpendicular brick hatching.
Thank you for all your awesome and inspirational videos! Currently doing a hobby hibernation of my own up north here in Canada and your videos and podcast are a regular source of inspiration for me. Heck, I even started my own hobby blogsite a few months back because I realized that life is too short, and I love this hobby too much to not share the joy it gives me. Thank you!
Love to see you painting a big army project like this Brent!!! Great job on these two "oids", I think you really did a good job of Painting Bravely!!! (the podcast)
For the bases, if you don't like rollers, you might take a look at stamps instead. They tend to be a pretty good option for things like bricks where it's a pattern. You might also consider things like curb, drains, and sewer grates in addition to or instead of things piled onto the bases with some of them. Curbs are relatively easy, take a piece of cereal box card and cut it to the basic shape you want it to have and glue it on, using that as a place to build the sidewalk and curb up above the street level that you'd do as normal.
Yeah I am so happy to see this video and so happy to be one of the first persons here. Enjoying the content as usual it's awesome. Loving the amazing painting
I love these blends and how you worked up from some vibrant darker colors. I think watching you and Jon is getting me more into fantasy than just Kill Team/ 40k / Underworlds.
Lovely and wholesome as allways and great company when painting. You and some other minimodel people can really Keep you entertained even more whilst sitting for hours in a studio painting. Keep up the good job and happy hollydays to everyone
Brent I just want to thank you. You are a beacon of light in this drab drab quareteen especially here in the UK where Christmas was canceled for a lot of people. I was wandering if you could do santa orks or something in the future?
Dude. I'm doing this too. Been printing BFG, Epic, and Warmaster stuff and am now building and painting like crazy. I figured that this is the perfect time to crank out a bunch of armies.
Just realized that you are the channel I always come back to. When I feel down in my hobby or in general. Your voice has a wholesomeness ( Not sur if this word exist I don't speak that much of English ) that fills me with tranquility. Thanks a lot for your painting tutorials and your general humanity, you warm my heart. Props also for being one of those thumb god airbrushes that Angel Giraldez talked as being transcendent humans xD
This is awsome! This is my favorite army. Wonderful sculpts old and new with stand out character models. Don't let people tell you that the play style is lacking either or that the only way to play is a bunch of durpee big hand Barbarians. The way I always go is mid game board control with stronge power groups. Like knights/shrine buff with a touch of occuler visions. Your going to have a great time Brent can't wait to whatch this process.
They’re so vibrant! I’m working on finishing my Start Collecting set of Slaves to Darkness, and I’m going with a deep yellow, an olive-y green, and a deep purple. They look really good so far...there’s just so much base coating to do...it never ends!
Hey Goober! I dont even paint or play Warhammer ect. But I find these videos of yours soothing and relaxing :D Might I say yer the Bob Ross of model painting?(maybe you have heard that before?) Yes, yes I would :) Keep it buddy! :D
Great video, as usual, Brent! I hope you emerge from this Winter with an army ready to do some serious marauding. I wanted to add my point of view as an introvert living with a wonderful wife and two teenage sons. Yes, I have willing participants for game play, but I also get next to no time to myself without interruption. It is hard to stay recharged without that time. I don't have a dedicated hobby space I can escape to. Fortunately my family is understanding and my wife is able to help the kids when they're "in school" so I get a little time here and there. I do have a Star Wars Legion core set in need of paint...but I'm placing no expectations on myself to get it painted any time soon. When the mood strikes and the time is available, I'll paint bravely the podcast.
As rough as 2020 was I did get a lot of painting done, and starting a youtube channel really helped! Lots of hobby plans for 2021 already, so I'm excited to get started!
i was actually hesitating on painting my lord ordinator since every other miniature painting youtubers either glazes or wet blends instead of using shades. this video came out on a perfect time.
Goobs, I love the content, love the scheme ever since I saw the first video, love the podcast, love the siblimmal messages throughout! Take care and happy hobbying, thanks for keeping me company!
"give my air compressor a chance to grab a drink and a snack"...reference to a certain channel about science and futurism, perhaps? One of my favorite channels on youtube.
Did the army paint scheme factor in the idea of using your cat as a Chaos Mammoth proxy? The paint scheme matches that furry friend in the back ranks of the army perfectly.
Very inspiring that you can still find motivation to Paint Bravely The Podcast while hunkering down and avoid feeling like we're Trapped Under Plasti-- uh, I mean, trapped under pandemic.
Hope you’re keeping well, Brent! Lovely video as always. Your channel has become my go-to for repeat watches when I just want some calm background patter while painting. And nice work on the Fomoroid, the colour combo came out great!
If you have a single or few big centerpiece models it'd be really cool to put a shattered wall that the model is stepping over into the town, but itd probably have to be a pretty big model to have space
The army looks great and the cat likes them too. The way you painted the yellow does not seem to clash with the purple and blue of the figures, in fact it kind of highlights them. I look forward to your next tutorial and thanks for sharing this.
While this does give us hobbiest a great excuse to get some stuff done, remember its perfectly ok to NOT make huge progress comming out of this.
Great point!

All the best in getting this army finished. Looking forward to seeing them done as I love your scheme!

the most powerfull warrior roars his/her units into battle!!!
best wishes for you and your loved ones, and thanks for another year of tutorials and cool vids
Enjoy the time, stay healthy and Happy New Year!
Such optimism in this video! Admirable.
Hi from non lockdown during summer over in new New Zealand keep painting homies
hello! :-)
I love these blends and how you worked up from some vibrant darker colors. I think watching you and Jon is getting me more into fantasy than just Kill Team/ 40k / Underworlds.
These two models look amazing Brent! I love the blood spatter effect, really cool
"favorite rocks for smashing" Great tips for toning down clashing colors, thanks for the awesome video and encouragement through the dark Winter!
Stay strong over there! Santa orks are always a possibility :-)
Oh, and of course, we’re in lockdown here in Manitoba. I’ll be spending the winter doing some remote learning at my university!
Hey Goober! I dont even paint or play Warhammer ect. But I find these videos of yours soothing and relaxing :D Might I say yer the Bob Ross of model painting?(maybe you have heard that before?) Yes, yes I would :) Keep it buddy! :D
3:57 - Pecs and tum-tums.
Dr Brent is not only a PhD chemist, but a grim-dark physiologist. ;-)
"... and paint bravley the podcast :))))"
ngl that part is kind of messed up, it's literal conditioning.
That Slave to Darkness scheme is sick, if I didn't have Imperial Fists already I would consider a similar scheme. Fair play!
*Looks outside, sees snow and ice outside....* Time to break out the tile grout and make some sandy bases for my Imperial Guard.
I LOVED watching you paint these! Please do more painting videos of whatever it is you’re painting!
Thanks Brent! You've inspired me to finally paint a graveyard golem I've had laying around
Hype for the rest of the army!
Thanks for what you do, and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
'Hangout in Ventrillo' - things you never hear in 2021 :P
I absolutely love the blood spatter on the fomoroid.
What an amazing army, and fantastic video. You have smashed it out of the park with this one!
I love that paint scheme! I'm glad you didn't go back on it and made it work.
The army is looking great, Im glad you paint bravely-the podcast, and kept that orange.
i was actually hesitating on painting my lord ordinator since every other miniature painting youtubers either glazes or wet blends instead of using shades. this video came out on a perfect time.
wow you make painting minis look so easy and awesome
Goobs,
I love the content, love the scheme ever since I saw the first video, love the podcast, love the siblimmal messages throughout!
Very nice project!
Happy to see you excited for it and can’t wait to see the next vids to see where this is going! Happy new year Brent!!
I've been thinking of making an armies on display board like that yup yup!
Wow its actually happening! a full army!
Yeah finished a massive part of my guard army and added a whole new hunk to it and got the awesome Valkyrie kit
Merry Christmas and happy new year Brent! May we all paint bravely the podcast in these dark days of doom.
Your yellows are glorious and your cat is an angel :D
The army looks great and the cat likes them too. The way you painted the yellow does not seem to clash with the purple and blue of the figures, in fact it kind of highlights them. I look forward to your next tutorial and thanks for sharing this.
