Thanks for making a video on this Pokémon. Gen 3 OU Starmie is one of my favorite competitive Pokémon of all time. The main reason I love it so much is because it feels like the perfect balance between offense and defense- it can be good at one or the other, but it can’t be good at both at the same time. It’s strong, but not overwhelming. It’s a fantastic “tutorial Pokémon” for the game too, emblematic of several of the game’s most important factors such as Speed, natures, EVs, status conditions, and entry hazards. Starmie feels easy to learn but hard to master, and few Pokémon are able to maintain a healthy balance of offense and defense like it can here.
I feel like Illuminate should've either acted like a Thick Fat but for Ghost and Dark moves or make the user completely immune to Dark moves so our lad Starmie could return to OU
This is a great idea, but I think a dark immunity would definitely be too big of a nerf for dark. But some kind of resistance or advantage against dark and maybe ghost makes total sense
Illuminate could boost moves accuracy. It will enable Starmie to use stronger attacks, like Blizzard, Thunder, even Zap Canon, and prevent accuracy drops, making it immune to Defog and such.
A Dark immunity sounds busted, but even a resistance to both of those would be huge. Starmie's Psychic typing would go from a huge liability to a strict upgrade from pure Water overnight
This wasn't really touched on in the video, but another fairly popular gen3ou teamstyle Starmie works really well on, is special offense teams with Dugtrio as a trapper. Get Dug in to eliminate Blissey at an opportune time, then Starmie will often be set up to clean up in the late game.
I'm no comp player, but I especially love hearing about gen 3 ou because it allows me to learn and theory craft about optimal teams for the battle frontier
252 HP Starmie sets are some of my personal favorites, actually. Starmie is a part of that group of Pokémon where I feel like its low HP balances out an otherwise solid defensive foundation. Starmie’s usually been advertised as an offensive Pokémon, but with this bulk investment it can try and squeeze as much value out of those base 85 defenses as possible, with defensive Starmie not even having to give up any Speed or even that much Sp. Atk to do so.
Defensive starmie is cool to pair with the other spinners but you drop spin on one of those mons for another utility move like ice beam, zap cannon, toxic or refresh amongst them to annoy more pokemon and make spin blocking not as free. It’s not the most robust wall though. That playstyle I mentioned is defensive by nature so you might see a lot of top players prefer magdol/bulky set up, ForreMiloBlissDug or even some variation of big 5 + trapper. It’s still a good option to throw in on offensive teams that could make use of the status soaking/spreading and hazard control like fighting spam or teams with bulky metagross. Those teams are a bit flawed defensively though and rely a bit more on defensive type synergy to help get each other onto the field.
Starmie will forever be one of the most iconic pokemon ever created. I hope we will see gamefreak giving it a chance to shine in the spotlight once again
The first time I used starmie was in gen 5 on a rain team. It missed two hydro pumps in a row against two fire types and lost me two matches. I wanted to use surf but everyone in existence was saying surf was worthless on starmie. Similar story happened in gen 3. If starmie is worthless without that 80 acc asswipe of a move then it has no place on my teams.
Just run gen 3 defensive Starmie (or any gen really), it runs Surf since it needs the PP and since its other moveslots are usually taken by spin/recover/twave.
i always forget starmie only has 100 special attack. Its got such a good movepool it seems to hit a lot for supereffective damage, i keep thinking its more!
Would you consider making content elaborating on the para spam style of team? I understand the concept, but not the team structure, and it sounds very interesting to me.
I would imagine its Ice neutrality is a pretty big one, as is Gyarados’s slightly higher special bulk. I’ve tried using it alongside Jolteon to make the most of Volt Absorb, but this seems dependent on if the opponent takes the bait or not. Unfortunately for it, Gyarados has slightly lower Attack and Speed, meaning it tends to need to be able to set up Dragon Dance more than Salamence might need to. It’s not UU levels of power, and given how hilariously Gyarados would thrash Gen 3 UU that’s probably a good thing.
Unfortunately, I don’t think this would make Starmie all that good even in the lower tiers. Terastalizing creates a situation where weaker Pokémon get stronger but stronger Pokémon also get better. Starmie may be able to make use of Tera’s offensive boosts to help with wallbreaking, but base 100 Sp. Atk isn’t what it used to be and there’s always the off chance another Tera Pokémon screws you over on a hard read. Defensive Starmie could be useful in other ways, though. Lower tiers can always use more Rapid Spin support, and Starmie has a couple unexplored tricks it could pull with the help of Tera and its Speed.
Too frail, can’t ohko hardly anything, 4 move slot syndrome leaves recover out of the toolkit. It’s important but if you come prepared for the teams it sits on as a whole, it’s ultimately a nothing burger. This is coming from a Spikeless player. I’m known as The Juggla in Gen 3 OU.
lol I HATE this Pokémon, I hated fighting it in RBY, and hate its design….no denying it’s a good Pokémon, I just was never a fan. Idk why such a boring ass star shaped starfish Pokémon exists with such good stats and a good ability….easily one of the most nonsensical Pokémon ever imo lol…oh well, I use it any damn way, especially in gen1 and Gen3

This is brilliant. Now I know all about the shining star of gen 3 OU.
With Illuminate, Starmie can shine even brighter.
I'm sorry, pls forgive me.
Starmie was a superstar in pokemon's early generations
with a prominent role in competitive singles all the way up until generation seven.
With an excellent speed stat of 115
With an excellent speed stat of 115, well above average for the time.
And a solid 100 base special attack, along with tremendous offensive moves, including the ever valuable thunderbolt and ice beam combination.
Starmie absolutely thrived, and shuned bright amongst the competition

I like this a lot. it's also a great example of 4MSS
Starmie is a special star fish

This would make Illuminate Staryu to foul Porygon from tracing a good ability in gen 3 ZU be no longer working.

This is obviously fake gameplay because the hydro pumps hit

Question: you said dffensive starmie can run "352" speed to outspeed gengar, but gengar is 350 max. Why do you not just go for 351 speed?
I believe the jump from 350 to 351 is impossible, the extra 4 evs to outspeed 350 somehow immediately brings you to 352. I may be wrong though.
