For those unaware about Fire Fang, there's a check that each typed damaging move has to do and it just happened to be overlooked on Fire Fang. This was never caught because Shedinja happens to be weak to Fire Fang anyway.
You’re right, but there’s actually a specific reason as well- fire fang has an incorrect ID stored to the move. It was SUPPOSED to be one digit away from the first turn of phantom force, but instead it SHARES the ID with the first turn of phantom force, which wonder guard doesn’t block, since it’s just a charge move. Hilariously stupid
Important to note that cartridge-accurate gen 1 pure hackmons is basically impossible to implement on showdown, due to the glitchmons and glitch moves that have all sorts of bizarre effects. Also in gen 1 you can enter link battles while statused, which is unimplemented on showdown, and would provide counterplay to sleep spam.
Fire Fang works on wonder guard because the move has the same internal ID as the first turn on Shadow Force, a "typeless damage" moment if you will. it's irrelevant in normal gameplay because Shedinja is weak to fire type attacks
If i remember correctly the stat overflow glich makes you take 1 hp of damage if you have 0 in that defense (and eternamax has 255 base hp so it's almost nothing)
Correct me if i'm wrong, but in RBY, a move could do 0 damage. Typically with low level mons on quad resists. Though if that happens i think the game just says the move missed
yesterday i was taking a relaxing stroll down the street as a jimothy cool non subscriber, when a jimothy cool subscriber sighted my clear unsubcribedness, and hit me with a devastating neutral tera boosted gunk shot, which took away 99.7% of my health and inflicted me with poison. "This is insane!", i cried out as i succumbed to the chip damage.
That is unfortunate, this also happened to me but because i was already a subscriber, the gunk shot came in clutch and exerted it's 80% accuracy and missed
I think he likely didn't understand that you have to make the stat EXACTLY 655 to make it overflow to EXACTLY 0, not just make the stat high enough. So you don't just need a positive defensive nature, you also need 240 EVs to not get too high in the stat, which he seemed like he didn't know since he didn't mention it. Incorrect EVs was probably the mistake he was making.
@@DJFracusI did this. Gen 8 PH isn't a challenge able format so you need a custom challenge command. I was doing it in Gen 8 Custom Game so it wasn't working
about the eternamax thing, it only takes 1 point of damage if it has a + defense nature with 240 ev specifically in the boosted stat, and itll take 1 point rather than 0 because 0 is always rounded to 1 (though it might as well be 0 because of that 255 hp)
eternatus actually needs 240 EV’s in either special defense or physical defense along with a nature boosting that same type of defense for it’s defense stat to become 0
The Fire Fang glitch happens because of a typo. When a move has a charging turn, the game won’t check if the target has Wonder Guard on the charging turn. So if someone uses a standard Solar Beam for example, the game will wait until turn 2 to see if Wonder Guard should activate or not. Shadow Force was meant to be on the list of moves with that property, and it was listed as number 272 in the game’s code. But Fire Fang was accidentally put on the list instead, because it was listed as move number 273. Since Fire Fang has no charging turn, it skips the Wonder Guard check during the actual attack
@@urkerab Nah, it just checks if the target has Wonder Guard on turn 1, doesn’t do anything with that information, then proceeds as normal and checks again on turn 2

In case anyone is curious why you can’t change a Pokémon’s ability on the gen 3 cartridge: each Pokémon’s data only contains a single bit (a 0 or 1) indicating its ability. 0 means it gets its species’ first possible ability, 1 means it gets the second (if it has one, otherwise it gets no ability which is how you can remove the ability on some Pokémon). An interesting note about eterna-max and stat overflow. You actually need to NOT max out your chosen defensive EV in order to hit 0 in it exactly. Really great video. Thanks for making it! I'd say it's mostly accurate. Enough to be a useful resource for sure. By the way as for Gen 8, there's like, a +2 to the damage multiplier that makes Eternamax take about 2 damage per hit when its overflown stat is targeted, but this is so low it's virtually 0 and you're still not gonna get remotely anywhere near KOing the Pokemon with that move.

Very good video - straight to the point, gives not only the best pokemon in each gen but some very helpful and interesting context and detail about the metagame too. Plus an entertaining subscriber message. Jolly good show
I played a lot of gen 8 PH so let me add a few things. Eternamax can only be immune to damage on the physical or special side. Not both. That was a way to get around it as well. A common pick was shell smash calyrex shadow with moongeist beam and psystrike. And then normally a fairy move. You just sus out which eternamax was immune to which side (usually they’d bring one of each) and then click the physical or special move. Additionally, Regieleki was huge in gen 8. And comatose was really common. Typical set was choice scarf with comatose, sleep talk, whirlwind, and roar. Set up hazards and then phase spam until they have 1 mon left. Magic bounce was a big counter and also helped vs toxic spamming eternamaxs.
When I was in gen 8 pure hackmons, saw a lot of regieleki's running hazards for one, then having comatose+sleep talk+scarf+whirlwind to have whirlwind go first and never give you a chance to attack.
I believe the reason Gen 6 is so popular for Pure Hackmons is also in part due to EVs. In every other generation, EVs can be hacked to be 252 in everything, but you only get your normal 510 in Gen 6 Pure Hackmons so an opportunity cost exists to “balance” things
RBY Hackmons would be a lot more interesting if showdown was able to implement pre-statusing mons. RBY link battles dont fully heal your pokemon before battle so you could just bring a poisoned chansey that is able to completely block sleep
Eternatus-Eternamax needs a defense or special defense stat with exactly 31 IVs, 240 EVs, and a positive nature to become invincible in that stat. And you didn’t even mention how commonly it ran Neutralizing Gas ability and Safety Goggles to shut down pretty much everything.
I did not know that about fire fang in gen 3. Mr jimothy is teaching the viewers new things about pokemon almost every day! First you taught us that Alakazam was a French pokemon, and now this!
I think it's beautiful that the best hacked pokemon looped back from the first to the ninth generation to be an electric type pokemon that is round shaped. Fast balls wins
gen 1 pure hackmons is the most obvious example of why bans are good actually and having a theoretically higher number of options don't equate to an increase in diversity, actually the opposite often times.
corrosion gets shut down by neutralizing gas, which is the best ability in the metagame (and especially prevalent on the pokemon corrosion would want to target)
Finally I may have some useful knowledge here. As I understand it, the 0 DEF bug works almost exactly as Jimothy described but with 1 key difference. When the damage calculation is ran with 0 DEF it actually produces a value of 2 damage before modifiers every time (from Gen V onward anyway.) This is mostly because the formula includes a three tiered division, which (simplifying it down to the relevant parts only for this example) includes (Attack/Defence)/50 and when Defence is 0, the total sum tends toward infinity, which the game spits out as a 0, then a flat +2 is added onto the sum, which results in the consistent 2 damage (before modifiers) People say it's "taking no damage" because it's a negligible amount but it's not actually 0, that's also why Jimothy wouldn't have been able to recreate it the way he originally expected.
I’d love to see a balanced hackmons format for gen1 with sleep clause/species clause just to see what happens. I imagine electrode is still crazy because you get a free ko every time but at least it’s only one.
Words cannot describe the hype I felt when you mentioned the debate of Giratina in his Origin form being the best Pokémon in the entirety of Gen 4 Pure Hackmons.
I like to run a Shedinja with Sturdy with these moves: Endeavor, Quick Attack, Shadow Claw, & Shell Smash. I also have that Shedinja with a teammate with SafeGuard.
In BW I hacked in a max speed no guard Ninjask with 2 OHKO moves, extreme speed, and aerial ace for Shedinja. Give it a focus sash to tank a move against sturdy users. Works against pretty much anything that isn’t Deoxys-S, at which point you can just give deoxys-S this setup
I feel like sturdy shedinja deserves at least an honorable mention. It got itself banned from balanced hackmons because of the way it centralized teambuilding
Jimothy, could you make a video about PP in competitive Pokemon? Is it a necessary mechanic? Is it ever relevant in the faster paced VGC format? Why did Pokemon go with this over the typical mana or MP that other games use? What does PP even stand for? I’d be very interested to hear what you have to say about PP.
Gen 3 not being able to hack abilities makes me think about creating restricted hackmon formats. Only abilities, only move, only stat redistributions(is not available?). Only modify one thing at a time until you get back to the existing hackmon format, then go again.
Fire Fang ignores Wonder Guard because of a coding error If I remember correctly, its id is one point higher than shadow force's, giratina's signature move which was supposed to ignore abilities They mixed up the ID numbers
iirc with eternamax's stat overflowing you have to get the stat to exactly 655 (which is 240 EVs and plus nature i think)?, and it still technically takes damage, however it will only be 2 damage before applying any other modifiers like STAB or type effectiveness so it's still basically immune. every stat except HP can overflow but there's no real reason to overflow anything but defense.
Yesn't. Gamefreak usually plans their games well ahead of time, however, this isn't the reason megas are programmed in SV. Every Pokemon and forme in the national dex is actually programmed in SV. The dexited Pokemon don't have models, but all their other data is programmed in to make things less tedious for them.

I like to run a Shedinja with Sturdy with these moves: Endeavor, Quick Attack, Shadow Claw, & Shell Smash. I also have that Shedinja with a teammate with SafeGuard.
Impressive. Now I know about the best hacked Pokémon in every game.
I actually can't believe I wasn't subscribed to Jimothy Cool
Gen 1 has sleep clause in Stadium, with 8F arbitrary code glitch it is possible to put hackmons into Pokemon Stadium as well.
I can hear you laughing/smiling during some parts of this lmao.
eternamax overflow happens at specifically 240+ in the stat of choice; any more than that then the stat goes up to 1 and it takes a lot of damage
I don’t know why I had to point this out, but when you said “what is the-“ at the beginning, you sounded just like Mordecai from Regular Show
Correction: When the defense is 0, it always does 1 damage, as 1 is the minimum damage you can deal without immunities.
17:00 i believe its 240 evs and a nature. it could be 244? but it isnt max evs
I feel like sturdy shedinja deserves at least an honorable mention. It got itself banned from balanced hackmons because of the way it centralized teambuilding
“What's the most you ever lost on a game of Gen 1 Pure Hackmons?”
Jimothy, could you make a video about PP in competitive Pokemon? Is it a necessary mechanic? Is it ever relevant in the faster paced VGC format? Why did Pokemon go with this over the typical mana or MP that other games use? What does PP even stand for? I’d be very interested to hear what you have to say about PP.
it's fitting that in the most chaotic format Giratina is (often) the best pokemon
and its the most consistent lmao
Normalize skillswap shell smash gengar is so fun to use in gen5 hackmons
Is that sinnoh music at the end?? how nostalgic
Mega Audino mentioned!!
Im sad that neutralizing gas wasnt mentioned cause pure hackmons also became a game of neutralizing gas, and the abilities that ignore it
Gen 3 not being able to hack abilities makes me think about creating restricted hackmon formats.
Only abilities, only move, only stat redistributions(is not available?). Only modify one thing at a time until you get back to the existing hackmon format, then go again.
Fire Fang ignores Wonder Guard because of a coding error
If I remember correctly, its id is one point higher than shadow force's, giratina's signature move which was supposed to ignore abilities
They mixed up the ID numbers
i think jimothy cool has found out about hackmons
The eternatus thing is implemented, they need a specific number in his defenses but i dont remember it
11:48 oh hey it's me
(why use that moment specifically ;-;)
Supreme Overlord with Last Respects. Tell me that doesn’t sound strong.
13:20 What's going on here? Why is Blissey able to use defog if there is no PP left for the move?
The Mega Audino it transformed into has 2 moveslots with Defog.
MissingNo. goes to crazy levels naturally
Doesn't sturdy also block one hit KOs?
iirc with eternamax's stat overflowing you have to get the stat to exactly 655 (which is 240 EVs and plus nature i think)?, and it still technically takes damage, however it will only be 2 damage before applying any other modifiers like STAB or type effectiveness so it's still basically immune. every stat except HP can overflow but there's no real reason to overflow anything but defense.
Jimothy taking up the mantle of mispronouncing everything after Wolfe dropped it 👑 king shit ♡
Very disappointed we didn’t find out which hackmons are best to hack the horse ability on to
No revivecats mention?
Revivecats was only a thing in natdex since assist isn’t in gen 9. You can’t use assist on cartridge even with hacks.
I did not know that mega’s are actually in ScVi’s code, were they planning PL:ZA from the start?
Yesn't. Gamefreak usually plans their games well ahead of time, however, this isn't the reason megas are programmed in SV. Every Pokemon and forme in the national dex is actually programmed in SV. The dexited Pokemon don't have models, but all their other data is programmed in to make things less tedious for them.
Hey Jim these videos are cool but could we maybe get more gen 3 team building stuff I feel like that’s some of the most informative stuff on the channel and it seems like you don’t do much of that anymore
