First start of the Detroit Diesel in the boat

- In this video I bolt up the prop shaft flange and start the Detroit Diesel for the first time in the boat. Before I can do this, however, I need to connect the morse cables, fabricate a bracket for the throttle cable, supply power to the starter motor, and attach the exhaust outlet.
Once the engine starts I have trouble with it stalling due to air in the fuel lines from the boat's fuel tanks (I presume), but I'll investigate that in more detail in the next video.

I often find when people complain that somthing is taking too long have never actually done a job like this temsleves. All of these little jobs allways take more time than expected, keep plugging away Stu, you're on the home stretch.
People live in an instant gratification mode these days. It's hard to get people to focus longer than 5 minutes.

When I worked in yacht construction (65 footer) and I had to take a bunch of bolts down into the engine room, I always took a couple extra "for the bilge".
At least it fell into the bilge. Most of my one of a kind thingys fall over board.

I cant imagine someone complaining about your time line. I think it's moving along nicely for a guy that's doing the lions share. If the work by yourself. Crazy. Makes me wonder if those that complain have ever done a project of this scope.

How I understand you, my friend... That feeling, beeing 90% done and it seems it will never end... I'm feeling the same with my boat restoration. The time, the money, it seems like nothing is getting done. But you know what? I'm doing a 12 hour shift right now, from 00 to 12:00, with the corona virus everywhere, not having the time to do anything, to finish the damn boat. So, my friend, drink a cold one, focus on one thing at a time, realize the wonderful life you have, screw all the rest and in no time you will be riding those waves. Cheers!
Just moved to Germany for work from the States. Was working 9 hours a day and dealing with 3 kids and having to walk all over everywhere for food, etc. Ended up catching the flu and bedridden for a week. Best rest I’ve had in weeks.

un baffled does not mean the same as silenced muffler. They make them for narrowboats in the uk. I think its just some steelwool around the outside that somehow absorbs some of the noise with a stainless shield over that with lots of holes. Does not restrict flow at all.
@@jacilynns6330 i understand its a packed muffler it was just a joke. Tractor mufflers are un baffled as well. Baffles can cause backpressure on turbocharged engines, and 2 strokes where scavenging is required to draw air in/out
Regarding the fuel delivery issue, double check your connections for tightness and make sure your tank is vented properly. As far as the timeline goes, the complainers wont be offshore with a dead engine watching a storm roll in. Take your time and do it right.
When you hit the starter I was sitting on the couch smiling like a kid at Christmas, major milestone, well done

I second the comment about the 3 gpm lift pump. They don't cost a lot but bring a lot of value. You can wire it to an off-run-start keyed switch so it runs when the engine is running. It will help a lot as you try to get the air out of the system after servicing the fuel filters as well.

I think this series illustrates very nicely how much effort, time , and money it takes to rebuild an old boat. Not to mention filming the whole process. If people are complaining I think they should take a good hard look at themselves and decide if they would even attempt something like this let alone be capable of the dedication required to finish it at all. I expect they well find that they are unwilling to even make the attempt. It is easier to sit at a keyboard and complain with he benefit of complete anonymity. When this boat is complete it will be done properly and last for many decades. I think that is something you can and should take great pride in.

Work hardening only really happens when the material is flexing. If your throttle control flexes a 5mm thick aluminum bracket, you have way bigger problems than replacing $2 worth of scrap aluminum. I wonder if people who offer advice have ever built anything before.
yeah not even close. its going to corrode to dust before anything else...
actually it depends on the aluminum alloy. Some it only takes two bends at less than thirty degrees to break away.
@@jacilynns6330 Still, will a throttle bracket ever see that much load to bend it anywhere close to 30 degrees?
@Jacilynn S even if you bought the cheapest hardware store grade aluminum it would still take a lot more to break. I LOL’d so hard when I heard the work harden comment, so many steel fanboys out there.

This old fishing trawler has come so far from what it was when you first got a hold of it. I hope it serves you well, or whoever you decide to sell it to. I think you should keep it though, all the backbreaking work you've done, you deserve to enjoy it!
And take your time. Stuff like this isn't easy work, if they were in your position they might understand that.

I've ran into the low fuel supply issue before. I like putting a 2 to 3 psi electric fuel pump in the line when you have multiple pre filters on an older system. I would say it is air, but it would also fix flow issue you were talking about addressing later. Congratulations on the first start up in the boat. That deserves a beer!

Watching this again after watching the second rebuild. Im no doctor, but she sounds better the second time around.
We pulled a 671 detroit diesel from an old brockway big rig rebuilt it top and bottom end placed it in a 175 Michigan loader adding an extra two hundred horsepower supercharged clockwise engine . Did it have a big bucket as it overloaded trailor dumps with two scoops . Ran great for years and years !

It's been a pleasure to watch the transformation of this vessel from a worn down and tired hulk to something truly remarkable. I know there is plenty more things that need to be done, but you can see that the light at the end of the tunnel is within sight. I enjoy watching the progress every week and know that this a labor of love. I hope this boat gives you many years of service and enjoyment.

Great to see the Detroit start up. Keep up the chook inclusion at the end also, our pug loves watching it. About the Alloy bracket-I work in the aerospace industry with aluminium and I assure you it will corrode to dust long before it cracks in the salt environment.

People have been shouting advice at their TV's for decades with no response, then one day they discover YT and can post comments, it's their dream come true !
People who complain about how long things take really have no idea of what it is you are doing and under what circumstances.
Everybody else just enjoys seeing how the boat is coming along and realise that trying to rush the job won't be very successful.
I can relate to hitting the wall......I built a boat under my carport, at one point I thought easier to get a cup of petrol and a box of matches. Took a few weeks off and then made a pact with myself to do one task a day on the boat even if it was cut a piece of ply or lay one area of glass. That did the job, finished the boat after 3.5 years and put many hours happily fishing on it.

Watching you with the exhaust pipe and remembering the transmission removal from the engine. I solved some of the frustration of working alone by creating a whole mess of bolts that are long enough to have a un-threaded bit of a couple of inches with the heads cut off and a slotted screw cut in. then I can screw two in and slide the part off or on with support without having to have 3 arms. Great bunch of videos.

Maybe put a label stating 19mm wrench on the shelf where it is stored because it is tucked halfway hidden.
That 19mm spanner is gonna be his version of the famous 10mm socket placed there once never to be seen again 😂😂
That 19mm spanner will be the most used tool on the boat, finding that sweet spot between dripping too much and too slowly will be a never ending task. I am predicting that a future project will be called "Changing the stern gland seal for a mechanical seal"
Don't know what people are complaining about. I'm a bit sad already since we're so close to it all being done and this amazing series ending. Not that I'm not exited to see the future content but this has been a great journey. People need to understand that doing thing in real life takes much longer than on a video.

Don't speed up your project. Many of us are watching the series because you're just a great bloke and we like your view of the world and your sense of humour. How long it takes is irrelevant. They can watch on 2X speed :)

The light at the end of the endless tunnel has shown itself in all its glory, be aware dont look it at for to long it can cause temporary blindness so it suggested to keep your head down and moving with brief intervals of contemplation and thinking how nice it will be to of the tunnel. Hats of to you mate, mammoth project.

Yes, I have been seriously thinking about that. It will never bet. A big boat but a few extra metres would make a huge difference.

On TV shows and movies everything happens in a rapid sequential way. People are conditioned and some are going to complain. Don't worry about it, most of us enjoy watching the real process.

Hey Stu just a quick hint from an old exhaust fitter about the maniseal i loosen the lid and squeeze it until the air comes out then rub it between your hands, this also adds a bit of heat as you mix it cheers Steve
My head opened up and a volcano came out when you dropped it bolt into the bilge. It was as though i did it. I have done this so many times I lost count. Looking good though mate!

By the time that aluminum bracket has "work hardened" and cracked, a steel bracket will probably already have rusted and cracked.
