  • Join me on my journey driving from Nottingham to the furthest point on the East coast of England via Porsche Nottingham to enquire about my 40,000 2 Year Service on my Electric Car where they give me a quote. We are always bering told that Electric Cars are Cheaper to run and that Servicing them and charging them are cheaper than the equivalent Petrol and Diesel Cars. Well prepare to be shocked as I rEVeal the cost of servicing and also the cost to get my EV FULLY CHARGED! You'll also see on my journey how poor the EV Infrastructure is and how astronomically expensive it is if you are not charging at home. Also joining me on my journey is @GeoffBuysCars

Drive a Porsche and pay Porsche prices for everything, if you can afford to buy a Porsche you should be happy to be ripped off for everything to do with the ownership experience. This does all serve you right.

When EVangelists say 'Ahh, but the battery has a 10yr warranty'. They really should check the small print.
They have a time and mileage clause. Usually up to 100k miles.
Porsche for example say it'll retain 80% of it's capacity up to 3yrs or 37500miles, 70% up to 8yrs or 100k miles. If it's deemed above that percentage, tough, you have to live with the reduced range etc.
Some, such as Tesla, reserve the right to 'replace your battery with a used/recon battery with a capacity suited to your vehicles age and mileage', and I think their cut off percentage is 60%.

Great video. That Tesco charger just sums up the charging infrastructure. I'm an engineer and looking at it from that point of view, there are just too many weak points in the whole business of charging your car on a trip which just has too many unknown variables, even if planned. Also ridicules, the payment methods without knowing for sure straight away how much you are going to spend on charging. Just so wrong.

Regarding weight, yes trucks cause damage to the roads, however it's not as bad as you might think. The tyres on most trucks are far larger and wider. The wheel size is 22", and the tyre is usually between 40" and 45" in diameter, with a tread width of 11" for heavy transport tyres, and there are 18 of those on heavy transport vehicles. The load is purposely spread over a much larger area. The main concern for trucks is that the infrastructure like bridges and freeways are designed appropriately for the weight of the traffic. When this is done correctly, the carriage of 1 ton passenger vehicles is really no issue. There's also the fact that heavy vehicle transport is part of our necessary infrastructure - if you own it, it probably came on a truck and you can't mess with that infrastructure without seriously affecting the supply of food, materials and household goods in the modern world.
Electric vehicles on the other hand have four narrow *and* low profile tyres on a 16" rim, and yet the weight of the vehicle is about 3 tons or more for an EV SUV. The push for longer range requires heavier batteries, which gives diminishing returns as heavier batteries require more energy to move them. There's also a hell of a lot more cars than there are trucks, so it makes sense that making cars two or three times the weight while limiting tyre size is going to have an effect on the roads. I also note that the reason your Taycan had trouble with barely visible trammel lines in the road is the nature of EV tyres and their complete inability to conform to irregularities in the road. This hints at yet another way in which EV tyres contribute to road damage on surfaces that are not perfectly flat.
Basically, trucks are a necessary evil. EVs are just EVil.
I've just done my own road trip here in Australia in my petrol Jimny. Distance was just under 1000 km (600 miles). I have both fuel receipts so I'm happy to do a breakdown of that if people are interested. (ie probably not LOL).

Hey Lee ! I just watched a video here on TH-cam last night about the big 3 major manufacturers here in the USA on EV’s and Ford announced its shutting down its EV plant because nobody’s buying EV’s here. Video said they have close to 100 thousand brand new Ford EV vehicles across the USA sitting on dealership lots that aren’t selling and they’ve taken over 100 thousand dollars off the cost of their Ford lighting pickup and they still can’t sell it. GM is doing or has done the same and the head of GM has said they are going to hybrid ( electric/ gasoline) production and that the future is in hydrogen powered vehicles. A yr or two ago when Ford put out it’s electric pickup truck they put out all these numbers on mileage & towing capacity that everyone was praising until some guys here on TH-cam got one and put it up against a same sized GMC gasoline pickup , both towing the same size trailer & weight and the Ford pickup with 100% charge starting side by side with the gas powered GMC / Chevy pickup and the Ford only got I think 90 miles before it had to stop and turn around and go back to a charging point 10 miles in the opposite direction because it wouldn’t make it to the planed charging point they had mapped out by Fords mileage numbers on the route that both trucks were taking. This whole EV thing is a joke , about the only thing they are good for is running around the city or town you live in but for countries like mine ( USA ) the distances that we travel say my state New Jersey to Florida in a day ( 17-18 hrs and that’s around 1.118 miles ) in a EV it’ll take days. 😂😂

As you brought up 'Morag' during this VLOG I was thinking that it would be excellent content if you and perhaps also Geoff Buys Cars were to throw out an open challenge to Morag. I think that the challenge should be that you supply your Porsche and Geoff brings one of his Petrol / Diesel vehicles. You then have Morag sit in your car reading a pre-planned route (supplied by you). Lets then see how Morag gets on trying to defend her 'sect' whilst actually seeing the daily issues of public charging on the journey. I think that it would be absolutely great content hearing her trying to defend the advantages of an EV vehicle. Please make it happen!!!

Apart from the fact it is an EV, what will increase the service costs are the fact that it is
    a Porsche EV!
Servicing any EV is not as cheap as you would think, but the higher up the brand ladder you
go the more they charge for servicing and parts.
A lot of cars are sold on finance with the buyer struggling to afford the monthly payments.
Motto is, never buy a prestige brand, and ensure you budget for servicing and expensive tyres
that these cars eat unless you have deep pockets.

    • @gimble447
      @gimble447 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I absolutely agree, but I think we all know about prestige brand servicing just like if you put a petrol fiesta in for a service it wouldn’t cost as much as a service for a petrol 911 lol, what I feel the real takeaway from this is the fact that as well as the environmental sales pitch on EVs they also said less moving parts means longer service intervals AND cheaper servicing costs and although maybe a big petrol Porsche may indeed be even more to service the fact remains that for basically a brake flush and some screen wash it’s close to 700quid and petrol variants don’t cost that much for a brake flush at the dealers so there’s more than one con going on with EVs (personally I think deception is the only way to sell ANY EV at this precise moment in time) lol :)

      @@johnshaw8013 Don't have a smart meter. I don't. Nor do I have a smart charger.
An incoming smart meter doesn't determine how the energy is used but the requirement for a new vehicle charger is that it must be "smart". (Apologies for the quotes, I dislike the word smart applied to anything digital).
In that scenario yes, you're absolutely spot on in that there's then an opportunity for charging separately based on energy for vehicle (which is why I don't have a smart charger).
In that case, the solutions are to use the granny charger (slow but works) where the vehicle just becomes another domestic appliance, or alternately, that "new tumble drier" needs a 32A commando socket installing, which is handy because that's what a car charger can also go into (if the right one is used).
Now, that's not to suggest that the rather large energy spike can't be assessed but heat pumps and other large energy consumers will also become part of the mix here.
It would be far simpler to just take the mileage at the MOT interval and tax per mile.

Quick calc - My Suzuki Swift can travel 517 miles on a full tank at (currently) £1.37 per litre (37 litre capacity) at a total of £50.69. For your charge price and if I had a 40 litre tank, the same cost would allow me to travel 559 miles which is 2.43 times more than yours. On filling, I would only spend between 5 and 10 minutes filling up to get back home. Yeah, EV's just don't cut it.

Now calculate costs for 10,000 miles per year of petrol. If an EV is only charged at home, which for some gives them up to 250 miles range, that could cost as low as £188 for that 10,000 miles
Alternate use case. Drive 1000 miles per week, 200 each day M-F.
Calculate costs. The EV comes in far cheaper, it's not even vaguely close.
Different use cases, different outcome but if public charging (particularly outside of Tesla) then an EV wouldn't be a sensible choice for anyone.

    • @paulcollins3725
      @paulcollins3725 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

In answer to '@djtaylorutube' EVangelist?, let us take the calculations a little further...
EV: Based on Lee's 'Charge', that works out at 24p per mile and multiplied by 200k (the average EV life before a new battery is needed therefore the end of 'lifetime' of the car), that's going to cost £48k over this period of ownership - 'lifetime'. Taking an average price of an EV (not Lee's cost of his car, bless him), we're looking at an initial outlay of £50k so we have a 'lifetime' outlay including the 'drive' of £98k
Let us say 'Lee' managed to pay 'at home' pricing of, what is it currently, 3p per mile where/whenever he charges the car, (Yeah, right) for school runs and little drives to town only, that'd amount to £6k over the 'lifetime' so we can bring the above price down to a manageable £56k
Petrol: My Suzi Swift does 9.8p per mile and multiplied by 200k, that's going to cost me £19.6k over the 'lifetime'. My Suzi cost me 9K (back in 2014) so my 'lifetime' outlay including the 'drive' would be 28.6K which is already 50% cheaper than the above best-case-scenario.
OK, let us say that we have an 'average price' petrol car at £17k and keeping with the above 'current' price of petrol and an average price of say, 12p per mile (dropping the guzzlers and sippers) this now equates to £24k fuel, the total 'lifetime' ownership would cost £41k
Putting aside wear and tear, new tyres (pricy for EV), servicing costs (pricy for EV), time lost waiting to charge (EV vs Petrol), range anxiety (no issue for ICE), EV brag rights (not a thing for ICE), etc, personally, as would the logic above and, I'd assume, the majority of motorists, I would suggest that the ICE version of a vehicle is the better option. Diesel would also come out cheaper too.
Summing Up: If fusion comes to reality (yeah, right) and if free too (yeah, right) and if the EV manufacturers drop their prices by 50% (yeah right) we'd be on-par but I, as a Petrol Head, don't have to worry about my car going up in flames in the night too. Plus, I can enjoy the sound of an ICE
      I rest my case :-)

@@bigfist255 Simple answer right now, stick with ICE. I don't work in government or for an energy provider so don't direct policy for charging infrastructure provision, nor have any ability to influence it. The transition is a decade or two thing, expect change.
All i'm pointing out here is that everyone has different scenarios and if someone wanted to make biodiesel in their flat and drive 20,000 miles tax free per year, they're free to do so, just as home charging can have significant benefits where available.
However, just taking a single trip cost and multiplying that out doesn't represent the same cost experienced by everyone.

The Taycan is about the thirstiest EV around. It's a high-performance car and can only achieve around 2 miles per kWh at motorway speeds. The 230 miles for 100% is a computer estimate based on the last motorway trip and assumes that the driver will carry on driving at motorway speeds for another 230 miles. At around 28p per mile that's normal for a petrol performance car too. Some EVs will easily do 5 miles per kWh so are 2.5 times more economical.

If he had a smaller car his advantages would be smaller economical engine, lightweight and fun handling. His drawbacks would however be the engine if non turbo would require more work to get it to or maintain 70mph on a fast road and up hills, smaller capacity fuel tank and there are less comforts in a smaller car like cruise control unless it was a high spec car.

All that faffing around to connect, press the right part of the touchscreen etc took longer than it used to take me to remove the filler cap, insert the pump nozzle and put 50 litres of diesel into my 2009 Dacia Logan MCV! Also I didn't have to present my card for the equivalent of £25 to be taken before the pump would start. There was only one pump I ever used at a totally unmanned filling point where you had to insert your card, select the value of fuel you wanted, fill up and the pump stopped automatically at the set value of fuel and issued a receipt.

It's hilarious, isn't it. Now imagine Lee in an ICE car, driving up to a petrol station. He goes to the wrong side of the pump, and he parks too far out from the pump. He struggles with the hose, and can't get the nozzle into the filler hole. This is all the fault of the car, nothing to do with Lee. Finally, after struggling for several minutes, he gets the nozzle in. Then he has to stand and hold it at an awkward angle so that petrol splashes out and and gets all over his trousers and shoes.
He also can't get the pay-at-pump to work because he presses the buttons in the wrong order and he's using an expired card. This all takes about three times as long as it would take the rest of us to fill up. And of course this proves that petrol cars are not fit for purpose.
That is exactly the scam Lee is pulling. The rest of us drive up to the charger, show it our card, plug in, and walk away (or we plug in, then show it our card - the instructions are on the charger). Lee does everything in the wrong order, in the most inefficient way possible, then blames the car. But you are all falling for it.
