    I think from personal experience that vallejo made a product really good yet keeping thier acrylic-only attitude.....and now i will consider myself crazy if i'll continue use lacquers .....that product is great...thank for the comprehensive intense demonstration , way to go

    After watching your video I was sold on Vallejo, I have sent for the metal colours not all but the main ones I'd use. Thank you for a great review.

    Well it's taken me some damn time to make it through everything. I appreciate your in depth-ness for sure. Just really hard to find the time for all the fun things in life.
    I'm intrigued now seeing your results. I think these certainly have their place. I look forward to trying some.

    I've used the Alclad with great results. But my technique is slightly modified from yours (I think). A common mistake made ( myself included) is laying down too think of the metal color over the Alclad black primer. I barely BARELY, lay down a super fine mist of the metal down over that black & THEN you see that magic metal color show. Most folks just lay down too much of the metal over the black primer.
    I just came across you videos tonight btw & instantly joined your channel for I truly love your easy to follow style of instruction! I look forward to watching many more.

      Totally true. You can definitely get a lot of variety of the finish based on how thick you spray.

    Thanks Will, very exhaustive review - wish I'd watched it before spraying all guns blazing on my Mirage III ! would have saved some heartache. Will definitely need to practice my 'light' touch spraying technique - tutorials etc.. don't really help as it really is a "have to feel it" thing rather than follow X - Y steps. Just need to keep practicing I guess - but it's an expensive hobby to keep practicing I don't have enough time or test subjects - just want to build!
    Thanks for you information and tips though

    Nicely done presentation. It pretty well mirrors my own experiences with the Vallejo. One thing you did not bring up was how the paints work on bare plastic. Some modelers don't use primer and any of the acrylics must be applied over primer in order to stick well. Not the case with the lacquer based paints. I have tried the Vallejo paint without a primer and can tell you that it will rub off from handling. I ran into this same issue when using a gloss undercoat though I'm not sure why this happened. I'll stick with the Alclad II for now, though the Vallejo paint is an option.

    For mixing I do use a paint electric "battery operated" paint mixer, not the hand held version' but desktop one. Thank you again.

    have to say i would rather watch 2hrs of in depth test than 15mins of blah, good to see you came to pretty much the same conclusions i did, i didn't have any lifting issues from masking but i did de-tack the tape and peel carefully according to some video i saw from some guy! just one thought though, where you had the worst peeling was the glossed area, wondering if the smooth surface prevented the paint from getting a good key?

    • @barpfoto
      @barpfoto  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +John Sharpe first, thanks for watching and for supporting my motivations. i'm the same way…if I'm going to spend time on TH-cam I want in depth content. if it's too long… That's what the fucking pause button is for. As for the glossy surface, there's absolutely no doubt about that. It's a conflict between getting a good metallic finish and having paint that will stick and it will always be a problem with acrylic metallizers.

    Well Will, I wish that I had gone back and watched this series (especially the surface prep portion) before I painted my most recent model (F-86D). I like the Vallejo Metal Color, but have only used the Aluminum flavor. Did you notice any comparable difference in applying it over a gloss black surface and a flat black surface? Thanks! Drew

    • @barpfoto
      @barpfoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      truthfully, it makes minimal difference with this paint. it's only ever going to be so reflective.

      I tried the Vallejo gloss black primer and was not impressed.....uneven shine and a 'grainy' finish. Stynlrez for now on!! ( I see that Stynlrez now has gloss black primer) Thanks!

      if you want a goood gloss black, there's exactly one answer. gunze gx2.

    • @Drewsmodels
      @Drewsmodels 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that a Mr. Color paint? I saw you use that on your F-86 metal adventure. My local HobbyTown store in Colorado Springs doesn't carry Gunze or Mr. Color paints. A buddy and I are going to make a pilgrimage up to an awesome Hobby Town in Denver, which carries just about everything! May pick up some. I wonder if Tamiya X-1 gloss black gives a good finish?

    Will hi, instead of using a bottle for decals, if you dip them in a bowl or a plate it would be highly advice-able.

    I just finished watching both parts of this title. I wanted to see what the colors and finish of the Vallejo Metal Colors looked like in use and I hoped you would show this. You did, sort of, but it was confusing and haphazard. You also bit off too much of related topics to include in this long two part video.
    Constructive criticiism- in future videos could you break out the topics, like decals and masking, into separate videos under those titles. It would be more on topic and helpful for us.
    I'm retired from a career in educational video production and editing, so I know what it takes to accomplish this kind of material. Thanks for your effort.

      no.

      ;) but, in all seriousness… what I do on here is not intended to in any way be anything more than a conversation. And so it is what it is. If I have any specific agenda it's to be thorough and objective.

    • @Slartibartifast42
      @Slartibartifast42 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you are doing with these instructional TH-cam videos is not a conversation. They are, by definition, monologues. What we are having now, here, is a conversation.
      And in making instructional videos the producer should also add organized and concise to the list of goals to be achieved. This two part video was thorough, but a little too broad and overweight.
      My two cents to help you improve. Thanks again, Will. Keep making these helpful videos.

    • @TheLukemcdaniel
      @TheLukemcdaniel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      (I guess today is my necrobump day...)I'm okay with the monologue, but somewhat agree that I'd prefer this be broken up. However, I do like how thorough and in depth he was in this test as well as how fair he was with it. Another youtuber tried a masking test almost immediately after spraying. OF COURSE it's going to peel off in that scenario. He also just painted over his shop mule, right on top of his last test, without priming. The only thing he really tested was how easily it was to work with. Will is actually putting it through all of the paces and showing what we should actually expect to get if we were to spray it on a final product and waited for it to properly dry before doing any masking or scraping tests.
      Will's videos can get a bit long winded, but what I get out of them is well worth the patience.
