There is also Vietnamese Pure Land Buddhism, but I don't know much about that. I have studied Japanese Pure Land Buddhism though, so I'll explain a bit about that.
There are 2 main lineages of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism: Jōdo Shū (浄土宗) and Jōdo Shinshū (浄土真宗).
Jōdo Shū was founded by Hōnen (法然), who was once a monk on Mt Hiei, the centre of Tendai (天台) Buddhism in Japan. He searched for a way to bring liberation to all beings, and came across Shandao's commentary on the Contemplation Sutra. He followed Master Shandao's advice to "only repeat the name of Amitabha with all your heart". He gained a significant following, many of whom were prostitutes, ex-robbers, samurai and others normally excluded from Buddhist practice.
One of Hōnen's followers was a man named Shinran (親鸞). Like Hōnen, he had once been a monk on Mt Hiei but had also left. He became a disciple of Hōnen but after several years, the Pure Land movement was banned and Hōnen and Shinran sent into exile in different places, never to meet again. This allowed Shinran's understanding of Buddhism to develop independently of Hōnen. Shinran got married, ate meat and declared himself 'neither monk nor layman' (非僧非俗). He never intended to start another school of Pure Land Buddhism, but he called his teaching Jōdo Shinshū (浄土真宗), literally 'true Pure Land school', and after his passing it became a separate school from Jōdo Shū.
Hōnen taught that one is reborn in the Pure Land through practice of the nembutsu (念佛) and encouraged his followers to recite it to gain rebirth. Shinran, on the other hand, taught that it is through faith and trusting (Japanese: shinjin 信心) in Amitabha Buddha that one is reborn in the Pure Land, and that one should repeat the nembutsu out of thankfulness and gratitude towards Amitabha Buddha.
Neither of the two schools require followers to keep the five precepts, though they are encouraged. One is supposed to trust in the 'other power' (Japanese: ta-riki 他力) of Amitabha Buddha, and practices like precepts or meditation are seen as 'self-power (Japanese: ji-riki 自力). Both teach exclusive devotion to Amitabha Buddha. Also, Japan no longer has full monastic ordination and as such those who are ordained may get married and drink alcohol. Therefore, they are referred to as "priests" instead of "monks" (and this is true of other schools of Japanese Buddhism too).
Jōdo Shū has a few temples overseas (USA, Australia and Brazil), while Jōdo Shinshū has a number of temples in America (called the Buddhist Churches of America) and some in Europe and Australia too.

Good information thanks. Think the Vietnamese Pure Land is similar to Chinese Pure Land. Amituofo 🙏

Thanks so much for sharing. I practice Jodo Shinshu but I agree with most of your points on your videos. While I think we have most in common with the Shandao lineage, I don’t think there’s any need for them or us to push you to our views. We are guided to our own paths by our karma, but at the end of the day Amitabha pulls all beings like a magnet.
Thank you for your blessed videos. Namo Amitoufo

@@PureLandBuddhism thank you for this. I remember asking about this in a previous video, I too practice Japanese pure land Buddhism since it is more prevalent in my area. Looking more into it we do follow more of the shandao tradition. However I truly appreciate your perspective. Thank you 🙏🏼 Namuamidabutsu

@@khristvnx I'm aware also different interpretations about Master Shandao's teachings. In the future I will translate his commentary on the Visualization Sutra so people will understand better exactly what Master Shandao had said. Thanks Amituofo 🙏

Thank you dear Dharma Sister Jiawen. What do you think of the teachings of Elder Dharma Master Chin Kung 淨空老法師. Since he is now the most well known, respected and elderly living Chinese Buddhist Teacher in the world.
Do you consider his teachings the same as those you mentioned and follow i.e. Chinese Pure Land Buddhism?
Highly grateful to you for sharing your knowledge of the wonderful Pure Land Dharma. 感恩.

When I was young, I began studying the Japanese language, through which I became acquainted with Buddhism. My Sensei belonged to a Jōdo Shinshū temple, but he also taught me a brief intro of Zen practice through kendō swordsmanship as well as some basics of Shintō. It was during this time, and after confronting some hardships (which I now believe were orchestrated in part by Māra Pāpīyān) that I had a dream of Amitābha Buddha and his bodhisattva acolytes. I lived somewhat isolated in the forest, which provided a good opportunity to simply go outside and bathe in light while comtemplating the name of Amitābha. These days, my practice is eclectic and independent, but all of life's experiences have led me to believe that despite my many 煩悩, I've had friends in all directions. 南無阿弥陀仏 🙏

Namo Amituofo 🙏 thanks for your explanation as we know before Japanese Pure Land Buddhism spread out. In Ancient China Pure Land Buddhism had been already widely practiced which founded by Master Tan Luan, Daochuo and then Master Shan Dao who is the actual founder of pure Land Buddhism, after hundreds of years Master Honen inherited the theoretical system of Master Shandao established Japanese Pure Land Buddhism. During this period Jodo Shu and Jodo shinshu slowly appear in Japan.

In ancient China there was also Master Huiyuan who practised earlier, who is regarded as the first Patriarch then Master Shandao the second Patriarch, who is also regarded as the actual founder of Pure Land Buddhism. In China we follow the system of 13 Pure Land Patriarchs teachings, which are in accordance to the sutras. And in China there's only one officially recognised Pure Land school which existed for 1600 years. Amituofo
