Thank god....I was almost getting abstinence... But I managed to view this episode laid back with a cold beer.... As I have seen all episodes, I think this is the most off-shore you have been on your own yet?? And again, Mr James Knight of the N51 - teaching a bit of Radar Squeaking... Very nice!! The Bimini is a bit of an obstruction when changing the courtesy flag?! And it strikes me - again - what a switch between modern and ancient scenery you experience and also comment on... This is why I love the mediterranean... it is just SO beautiful. And you research every bigger landmark and we -- as viewers - learn along the way!! and you keep giving us the "Daily maintenance" story as well - truly love it!! Mark and Fiona - you are at a minimum 00 away from what number of subscribers you should, deserve, to have - IMHO this is the best trawler channel there is!!
Thanks so much Nicolas, really appreciate such positive feedback. Yes it was for us a big leap going through the night. It went well and blew some cobwebs away when it comes to how we feel about that. Great being home but already to be back on our floating home.
Loved the episode. Catching up with Jen today. Has just arrived in Gizzy. Can’t wait to hear her stories with you guys. Loved the history stories. Must say each episode makes me envious. Your work ethic shows as well. Thanks Mark and Fiona for the sharing. I know it must be a huge commitment. Unlike others I have no advice to offer. Learning by putting yourself out there takes guts. ❤
Welcome home David. I just hope Jenny and Walter did not feel too rushed. It was a bit whirlwind with having to get to Tunisia. We did some big miles which must have been an experience for them. IF they come again the next trip needs to be relaxing
Hello from the states again. Another great video thank you. We love sitting here watching these videos of you and your family. Thank you so much. Please keep them coming. You and the Mrs. are doing so well on your own you both have come so far. It’s amazing. And remember, it’s OK to have three drinks a day Mark. You both have earned that right. Lol
I'm glad you were able to fix the plotter/GPS problems. Sorry to hear you've experienced problems with the solar panel wiring. You're pretty smart to be able to figure all that out. I can't wait to hear an update about how the solar panels are working/helping.
When you go back to Malta I suggest that you spend time visiting the island It has that oldest known temple of the world predating Stonehenge by 1000 yrs . It is a Unesco site Also Valleta is known for Movie sites such as Gladiator, Napoleon etc
Mark don’t forget that the ais target and radar signature will not always be the same as the radar shows you where the target is whereas the ais is updated less often about every 2-10 seconds. So you will see the radar target move and the ais skip behind catching up but never exactly right unless they aren’t moving
The scenery is fabulas . . And great weather . . With all your flags youl be able to stitch them to a blanket like scouts . Lol . . Have Hordhavn asked you to be at an boat shows to display hull 5101 ??. Hope your enjoy being back home for a week or so . Till next time take care . Bye from Hamilton 💐👋🇳🇿🍻twa
Well done for discovering the discrepancy with the radar! It would be interesting to compare with North Up mode to see if the offset still seems correct. Personally I prefer my plotter & radar in North Up as that’s how I visualise a chart, but it takes some getting used to and is a personal preference.
Hi Mark, NZ boat builder here. I was watching you change the flag and was horrified. Nordhaven could easily put a zipper flap that would be watertight and make it much easier and safer to change the flag. Since you are visiting so many different countries this or another solution may be warranted. have fun and stay safe!
Great video, I also got a glimpse of my boat in its berth at Manoel Island marina! One small suggestion, it's better to change the setting of the plotter's chart to North Up when explaining where you are or where you're going, it's clearer to understand.
Mark you have mentioned earlier that you run so slow to conserve fuel but I would have thought that at 50ft you could run more like 7knots with out much of a fuel consumption penalty or is that not the case?
Wonderful video, sad you had hard and fast travel plans that forced you to cut short a stay in Malta. Your explanation of why you cruise at under 6 knots was clear, but I still don't quite understand it. I assume the boat has around a 47 ft waterline length, so the square root of that is 6.8 knots, which should be a very economical speed. 1.2 X 6.8 = 8 knots which is still under theoretical hull speed and should not gulp fuel. If you had run the trip to Malta at 6.8 knots you would have arrived well before sunset, making it easier to reconnoiter the harbor and find suitable mooring. You would also have had time to go ashore and have dinner after a long day at sea. To me the advantage of arriving at an unfamiliar port in the afternoon instead of near sundown might warrant spending a bit more on fuel. But I haven't cruised as much as you have so I have to bow to your experience. Thanks for sharing, experiencing your passagemaking is highly informative and entertaining.
Yip we are reevaluating. We got used to that speed when cruising around the islands for short distances. Longer passages were not our expertise so we carried on doing the same. We are going to experiment more when back in October. We have two legs pretty similar so will do the maths on both speeds.
Great video, as usual. Quick question, I didn’t realise Kiwi pronounce bouy like the yanks. Is this new? Great catch on the wiring. Always something to learn. Thanks guys, I’m enjoying the videos. I also liked your profile in Passage Maker magazine 👍🏻 And please give Mrs R more compliments ❤
From another Kiwi boatie, no we do not normally pronounce bouy the American way of "boo-ee" but simply as "boy". My guess is Mark is being a globalist!
If it were up to me I'd have two or three small grab rails installed to the outside of the radar arch to hang onto, or, to use as a ladder for safer access to the top of the arch and flag pole What happened to the fireworks finally? saving it for the next episode ?.
Are they Bonds you’re wearing up there on the flybridge! Bonds should be worn as jocks only. You need to invest in a pair or Speedos if you want to multipurpose for both sun-baking and jocks!
Seeing the two of you we are starting to get worried. Living on a boat, 24 hrs a day, requires care for each other, you need each other both ways. The moment you stop caring it is the end. Understood you are using an anchor marker buoy as well, which is a great idea. We made ours using the tips of this video, worked out great for us. Trick is in the diving weight and a thinner (but stronger) line. th-cam.com/video/dvD7C3HukrM/w-d-xo.html
Hey don’t get worried it’s just how we are…believe me we are in this for the long term. What a fantastic video I wish we had found it earlier. We will sort this system on our return…cheers
Stop keeping score about "compliments". With a good couple like you two it's absolutely unnecessary. Leave that for the young ones who need an axe to grind to feel relevant. You are doing so well as a marine couple banter and all.
Because it’s a sign of respect and also the law in many countries! You are acknowledging that you are in their waters and not trying to circumvent any rules

Thanks so much…what a bloody good idea, love it and annoyed I did not think of that. Nordhavn did not design the Bimini we did so it’s on me.

Mark you have mentioned earlier that you run so slow to conserve fuel but I would have thought that at 50ft you could run more like 7knots with out much of a fuel consumption penalty or is that not the case?
It’s about a 30% saving going at 5 knots of course also taking the speed/time into account

I've often wondered why some people pronounce bouy (boo-ee) but when you ask them to put on a bouyancy vest on they'll pronounce it (boy-ancy vest) 😊
