Keeping it in traction is the key, slower speed in traction in the lower gear, beats sliding at higher speed in higher gear. Manual is the way to do it for sure. Sometimes you have to break traction as the turn is too tight, if this is the situation, try your best to not hold the powerslide too long, lifting off power then reapply to exit the corner. It might feel slower to your senses, but it will be faster on the clock.
