Hi Phillip. I posted this video in February 2018. As you can imagine, the smart phone app has been updated multiple times. Therefore, the exact procedure I demonstrated in the video has changed.
I added a Honeywell RTH6580WF to my home recently. I discovered no c wire. Without knowing what all it involved, I found the blue wire tucked into the wire bundle as it had been cut off since not in use. I stripped it and applied it to my thermostat. Still no power. I then went down to my furnace to see the blue wire was not hooked up either it was just wrapped around the same wire bundle going to the thermostat. I stripped it and hooked it to the C terminal on the furnace. Now the C terminal had a white and brown already attached going to the AC. But you can hook more wires to the C. You can hook the 3 right into the terminal or you can bundle them together with a 4 wire called a pigtail then you only have one single wire hooked to the C terminal. User preference. So don't just assume because you found the blue wire in your wall or wire bundle behind your thermostat that its connected to the C terminal in your furnace. You will be best to take the panel off your furnace , find if a C wire is connected and determine the color while making sure it's the wire bundle going to the thermostat.
Hello, so it was a simple as just connecting C terminal at thermostat to C terminal at the furnace panel to get the required constant power supply to the thermostat?
Very well explained. I have a question. My old thermostat is battery powered and it only has 2 wires connected (W and RH). The thermostat is only used for my gas heating system. What is my next basic step? Do I need to change the wiring? Thanks
Buyer beware, Honeywell thermostats keep your house within 1 degree temperature, they don't advertise it in any way I have found, that causes your heater and ac to cycle a lot, when it turns on, not only does it use more energy then when it's already running, it puts much more wear on your pump and motor, I had to talk to one of their techs to find this out! All these people spending all this time to find out it's factory like that. I loved it other than that!

Using the plate was a great idea! Thank you. I have almost the same set up (blue for C instead of brown) but it doesn’t seem to be getting power. Do you have any suggestions?
If I was diagnosing the issue, I would look at the connections of the wires to the mounting plate making sure I didn’t push a wire in too far where the insulation was blocking the connection. Then I would test the C wire with a volt meter to make sure it is supplying power.
What we would be helpful is a troubleshooting for frequently asked questions. For example my thermostat keeps blinking while I am trying to set the time and day. Overall it’s a very helpful video for those who are overwhelmed by a lot of information in booklets
My sister just installed mine. Replaces a Prostat T855 with batteries (not smart) that stopped working. She used a patch, spackle instead of the plate but it doesn't look good. Back to the thermostat. My old thermostat didn't use the c blue or brown wire. She connected the blue and the furnace turns on but not the thermostat. There's no display. Also the front half doesn't click into the back plate like yours does. I'm wondering if we should try the brown wire instead of the blue to power the thermostat?

Pro tip, do NOT change your network name to anything that has the "&" symbol in the name. Ask me how I know........It was a 1.5 hour headache before I figured it out while the service people were wanting to send me info to have my ISP change stuff. ALL my other devices had NO issue with my network name change, but this thermostat did. Learn something new every day. Other symbols might be a issue as well. I even did factor reset, menu 91? learn the setting menus from holding fan and up at same time, that's where you can start the process over when changing router or network name or password. Be careful though on some items do NOT change settings unless you KNOW what menu you are on.
I have a question I have central air but when it clicks off it can’t go back on right away it has to wait 4 minutes before it has the okay to turn the unit back on is there a way to program that thermostat to not click the unit on right wen it goes off so that I don’t burn out the unit bec the thermostat I have now is set that way to protect the unit is there a way for this one as well? Because I’m looking forward too getting this thermostat soon
Interesting question. Seems like every window and door in the house would have to be open to run the risk of the HVAC unit turning back on after only four minutes.

Diana the color of the wire isn’t necessarily important. The important thing is to note which connector it was attached to on the previous thermostat (C, Y, R, G etc.).

How do you check the power of the common wire (brown) to make sure that it's live? I have the exact setup with matching colors like yours, but mine never turns on. I'm pretty sure that I connect everything correctly and triple-check the connections too. Nothing comes on. I even bought a second one just to be sure that the first isn't faulty. Still, nothing comes on. I give up and buy a battery-powered version of this unit. Any idea?

I only have R and W wiring, both were installed in their respective terminals. There's no C wiring. Could this work for now until ready to set up later with the C for wifi i guess?
Nelson I absolutely agree with you the Nest thermostat is much easier to install. It also comes with its’ own custom back plate. I have installed every product Nest makes and they all link well to WiFi.
I never had to reset the time for daylight savings or any other circumstance. It is connected to the home WiFi and keeps the correct time automatically.
I'm replacing my previous thermostat with an Honeywell RTH 6500. My old thermostat has 6 wire(O for orange, w for white, G for green, R for red, black=C, and Y for yellow) . What should I do with the O ? The users manual says if your old thermostat had an O wire and not a B wire , attach the o wire to the O/B wire. Then should I tailgate O wire to the W wire since w wire already occupies the space where OB should Go.
You did not illustrate how to remove this thermostat from the wall in the event of wifi failure ?? How do you remove the thermostat from the wall base ??
Is the C wire always brown? my current thermostat has a white, green, and red wire connected (to their corresponding initial), there is also a brown and black wire coming out from the wall but not connected to anything. There is a slot for the C wire but it says its optional if batteries are installed, so the C wire isn't connected. Is the brown wire the C wire?
Bob It’s possible that is your C-wire. You will need to test it to see if you are getting voltage to it to know for certain. There are several videos on TH-cam demonstrating how to test your voltage at the thermostat.

Ron yes you should. The wires at the thermostat are low voltage and not a threat to you but, if they touch each other, they might kick the HVAC on and off multiple times which could damage the system.
Very good video. Thanks. Interested in a video or information source on DYI connection of a control module to the unit for a wireless setup. I need to relocate my thermostat. Thanks again.
jimdandy63 ecobee makes a WiFi thermostat with an additional “room sensor” which gives priority to the room temperature rather than the hallway or wherever the thermostat is installed. I would check the reviews on that for a start.

@@houseonthemend hello, if missing the C wire connection, is this as simple as running a new line with the extra wire and connecting C terminal at thermostat to C terminal at the furnace? This could be a lot easier. I gave you a thumbs up. It’s just that the colors should be explained. Other than that great video.
Sam thank you for your feedback.
Jay thank you for sharing.
House On the Mend no I mean like let’s say it just shuts off but someone goes and turns it back on mine will not click for 4 minutes to protect the unit
House On the Mend is there a way to program this thermostat to do that as well? so in case someone touches it not realizing the unit just click off
@@bornintoacorruptsystem9to5 the next time your A/C tech comes to the house, or you can do it yourself pretty easily, have them install a time delay on the outside compressor

At 5:30 you FAILED TO MENTION what the other colors are that are wrapped around the big wire. -- What are the Orange and the Light Blue wire for??
The original HVAC installers ran wiring with more strands than needed. Disregard unused wires.
I don't have a brown wire. I was hoping that you would tell what the white in the box was used for or what to do when you don't have a brown wire.
Diana the color of the wire isn’t necessarily important. The important thing is to note which connector it was attached to on the previous thermostat (C, Y, R, G etc.).
Do you need to turn off power first? I think that's important for those that are not safety conscious.
Yes. I suggest turning off the breaker at 9:15 in the video.
Mike you are good ... actually you are a life saver ... and I will give you 🌟🌟🌟
Thank you so much!!!
Is wifi required for this unit to function at all? Is it inoperable without a wifi connection?
WiFi is only required for Smart Control features via your phone or home device (Such as Amazon Echo). I wouldn’t buy this model if you don’t intend to use it with WiFi. There are plenty of less expensive options without WiFi functionality.
@@houseonthemend My new apartment comes equipped with one of these and it's just blowing hot air. I thought maybe because I hadn't set up internet yet it couldn't work...but I guess its another issue. Thanks for your reply!
You are very welcome.
If you get a power outage will the thermostat go back to factory settings?
Nano, no it goes right back to your applied settings.
I installed this and follow step by step exactly. The AC was working with the old thermostat. But now the ac does not blow cold air anymore. When I turned it on Cool mode it is turned on but there is only air. No Cold air. Any idea why and how to fix it ? Thanks
I would check all the wiring connections with a voltmeter set to continuity. Otherwise, if the wiring is correct, I don’t have any explanation.
Hi just watch your video what app is it for the WiFi Honeywell Home thermostat. And I from Las Vegas NV to.
TCC Connect
Thank you for the info good video for installing plates!
You are very welcome. I’m so glad it was helpful.
So I connected it and have power to it. But my heat isn’t turning on to blow out the heat. I Only have green, white and red wires. Any suggestions to problem?
cant get it to blow cold air??!!??.... house currently uses HoneyWell TH5110. thought it should be a pretty quick and easy transition. must have cold air in Arizona; 53 days over 110deg this summer.

17:36 I don't get that page at all. This is the same page shown in the other videos. I wonder what's wrong with my app?
In the five years since I published this video, the app has changed names three times. At present it is called
"TCC" which stands for Total Connect Comfort. In addition, the method for connecting to WiFi has changed.
Loved the video. Thank you!

One of the best video good job 👍
Thank you very much for your kind comments.
Awesome. I moved in a home that has this thermostat, so I don't have any of the paperwork. Is it easy to take the thermostat down so I can get the information from the back to set-up the wifi?
It isn’t easy like the Nest thermostat. I would google it to find a video.
Any idea?
Common wire is tested with a volt meter. You are looking for 24 volts AC.
very good job i realy thank you sir for your help thanks again

Can I use the RTH6580WF on a commercial center unit in my church building?
I don’t know
I have been trying to get mine installed for 2 days wires were too short so had to cut into the wall to extend them but that's not the issue.. the issue is the thermostat is not coming on
Thanks for sharing. Your video helped me install mine!
Chris you are very welcome. So glad it helped you!!
All this was a pain in the ass but it worked. I better not have to do this again if I lose power.
Thanks for your help!
You’re very welcome!
I have the exact same Honeywell Thermostat with a heat pump. Could you give me instructions to wire this scenario. The old thermostat only used the 5 wires, but there are other wires tucked into the wall. Eg. orange
Ted the Honeywell manual has multiple pages devoted to different wiring scenarios. I would refer you to the manual.
thanks for posting, life saver you are

Hi, I bought the panel and the sensors, and installed it myself. I have wifi communicator. I don't have an alarm company, and I don't want to have one. How can I create an account (username and password), and use the total connect 2.0?
very clear instructions

Tstat will not turn on compressor. It calls for cool, it’s blinks, then goes solid cool, after 1/2 hour compressor will not turn on.
It worked fine before on std tstat. Jumped out red power to yellow compressor and compressor comes on with fan turned on. It cooled fine for 1 hour or more. Is tstat bad or am I missing something. Also checked set up: heat cool gas furnace etc.,
Michael thank you for your question. As you can see from the videos on my channel, I am not an HVAC expert. You’re issue is beyond my level of expertise.
I only have R and W wiring, both were installed in their respective terminals. There's no C wiring. Could this work for now until ready to set up later with the C for wifi i guess?
Probably not since there is no other power supply. You should buy a thermostat that runs off batteries.
@@houseonthemend yeah I just returned it and went back to the regular. Thanks
Good choice.
l think you did a great job with the back plate. great idea. i have a nest i think it is easier to install.
Nelson I absolutely agree with you the Nest thermostat is much easier to install. It also comes with its’ own custom back plate. I have installed every product Nest makes and they all link well to WiFi.
Can it be set to change from heat to cool and back automatically? Great job on the video.
No however you can change from heat to cool manually on the device or via the app on your phone.
can you control this from anywhere like out of state?
Yes absolutely. Anywhere the app on your smartphone can access cellular service or WiFi.
Can you reset the time etc via the app if you are on vacation and have a power cut or does it remember?
I never had to reset the time for daylight savings or any other circumstance. It is connected to the home WiFi and keeps the correct time automatically.
Excellent video
Thank you, Arturo!!
Page 18 of the manual shows the W wire going into the “AUX/E” port and the O wire standing alone.
At 17:26, my Thermostat shows 'no internet access.' so I can't seem to move forward..😔
We are having a hard time connecting the Thermostat to the WiFi.
Rokiatu there are some helpful comments below from other viewers having trouble.
Can we replace existing wired hvac remote with this wifi thermostat to control it from mobile app?

Roshan I don’t see anything in the app or control panel that could control what you are talking about. I would look elsewhere.
Can I control the temperature and fan while away from my home? Like if I were to travel somewhere, can I turn the AC on or off when I want to?
Yes, very easily, with the app.
I’m helping my dad remove and install this thermostat and we connected each one correctly however we don’t have an orange and every time we try putting the timer it just turns off

My thermostat display is not working. This was newly installed and about in a month the display is not working. It’s blank. Display sometimes comes on for like 10 seconds and then goes blank for extended period of times..please help.

Where are the batteries in the thermostat ? I've been having trouble with that.

Great job (neighbor) on adapting that new unit to the existing location!
S D Thank you very much! It was a unique situation so I was excited to include it in the video.
Great tutorial!! Question, do you have to turn the A/C off on the fuse box?
Ron yes you should. The wires at the thermostat are low voltage and not a threat to you but, if they touch each other, they might kick the HVAC on and off multiple times which could damage the system.
Very good video. Thanks. Interested in a video or information source on DYI connection of a control module to the unit for a wireless setup. I need to relocate my thermostat. Thanks again.
jimdandy63 ecobee makes a WiFi thermostat with an additional “room sensor” which gives priority to the room temperature rather than the hallway or wherever the thermostat is installed. I would check the reviews on that for a start.
hi! im looking to replace my honeywell t8011r. is this wifi model compatible. in my t8011 i have both orange and blue wires connected to o and b connectors.. thanks for the help!
It should be compatible provided you have a “C” wire to provide power to the thermostat. If your existing thermostat is digital, and doesn’t run off batteries, you are probably good to go.
@@houseonthemend yes i do have a c wire but my question is where do i connect orange and blue since there is only 1 connector o\b ?
The manual has many wiring combinations illustrated beyond just a standard setup so perhaps you will find your answer there.
@@houseonthemend went through the manuel but no help. thanks for your quick reply.
So we just did a set up our self. Everything was connected properly. On e we turned on the AC it shuts of after 10 seconds. Then on and off. What did we do wrong

Will this works with heat pump?
Yes
This was extremely clear and well presented. 👍🏼
@brainblasta2 thank you very much for your kind comments. It seems the app and, thus, the WiFi connection process has changed in the two years since releasing this video.
House On the Mend and turns out the one in the house I just bought is not the WiFi version unfortunately but still a great video.
Too slow for me. But thanks!
Nice, detailed, easy to follow video. Thank you
Joseph you’re very welcome.
Would like additional explanation to change the wiring on the actual furnace, for those of us who didn't have the C wire used on the old thermostat.
The installation manual has several wiring examples for you to refer to.
@@houseonthemend hello, if missing the C wire connection, is this as simple as running a new line with the extra wire and connecting C terminal at thermostat to C terminal at the furnace? I just want to make sure I don’t need to make an additional connection from furnace to the unit outside.
Also, I would like to be able to run the fan alone without the A/C or heat needing to run. Is that also just a missing connection between thermostat to furnace or is it like more complicated than that? I have a heat pump system (above ground) from Carrier so it has regular heating from gas furnace, auxiliary heat from heat pump and then the A/C function for cooling.
Thanks
Great video, but I don’t want to use it thru wi-fi. Can I.
Yes you can use it without WiFi but I would recommend buying a thermostat without WiFi capability since it will be much cheaper.
This could be a lot easier. Now, this unit does not connect to the tcc app, only the resideo honeywell home app. So, if one zone has tcc, and the other honeywell home you have to push the tcc device to honeywell home. I think the rich old men at honeywell sold part of the business forgetting about the actual needs of the customer.
Interesting. My thermostat still operates from the TCC app. I do not have the “Resideo Honeywell Home” app installed on my phone.
@@houseonthemend LOL 24 hours later, the new unit showed up.
i bought one could not find c wire and ended up crossing 2 wires by accident i heard a pop in the furnace area now blower will not work..im hoping just a blower relay
Ouch!
When I click the Mythermostat under wifi, the window doesn't pop up. It says "connected no internet". Why can't I proceed to the next step?

Will the thermostat work if I choose not to connect it to WiFi or if I want to connect it to WiFi at a later date?
Yes it will. Standard models without WiFi connectivity are less expensive so I would go that route if you don’t want to use the smart features.
