This smart thermostat from Honeywell is a great "intermediate" product between the old school 7-day programmable thermostats, and the high-tech, expensive "Auto Learning" and "Auto Sensing" thermostats like the Nest or ecobee.
Here are my 4 Favorite Features:
    1. Remote control access from anywhere, anytime! All from the app you can set temperature and system settings. Plus you can easily modify the 7-Day programmable schedule.
    2. They have a website "app" that allows you to login and control this smart wifi thermostat from anywhere. Plus you can turn on email notifications for an assortment of possible scenarios.. "alert me when the humidity drops below 20%" etc
    3. Simple to use scheduling interface. Very easy and quick to jump to a specific time/day, tweak heat/cooling wants and hit save.
    4. Great touchscreen display. Vibrant colors, different themes, easy to navigate, easy to read.
(This could be a great thermostat for the elderly, as they can easily read and control the thermostat themselves, but someone else can login remotely and "help control/temp settings" if needed.)

This is a great thermostat. The automatic feature is a bonus for those few weeks of the year where you have the air conditioning on to cool the house but don't want the house getting too cold i.e. set the A/C to cool down to 67 but heat comes on at 63.

I am an hvac technician with more than 20 years of experience. Honeywell has been making thermostats for over 100 years. The nest is a piece of junk. They have known issues inside the hvac community. Most technicians do not like them. Most of those features nest provides is smoke and mirrors. People will not use them or alter their lives to fit the thermostat. I love the honeywell 9000. Its definitely my recommendation for a nice wifi thermostat. It works, works with different types of systems. It is reliable and easy to set up and use.

Great Review. Three questions: How many watts is the device using in idle mode (Wi-fi and Screen on)? Can you set the screen to turn off after a minute? What major features is it missing from other more expensive and perhaps more popular smart thermostats?

Something I'm unfamiliar with, and having a varying temperature from the 3rd floor down to the basement......I found the "Circulate" feature to be a big help. It seems to kick the fan on periodically to keep the air circulating around the house, in hopes to avoid a sauna on the top floor and an ice box in the family room. Maybe this is a normal feature, but it was new to me, so I'm addition to the Pro's you outlined, I added air circulation to my list.

Yes, a good idea as long as your ducts and main air handler are indoors. Ours are in the attic so in summer, the circulated air would be heated and in winter it would be cold air.

  • @deej19142
    @deej19142 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Right now at work I have three of the Proliphix N130 24v Thermostats, they are not wireless but I have them direct wired to Ethernet. I can program them from my office or even at home with a little hoop jumping through a portal. These thermostats are about 10 or 12 years old now, and before I start having trouble, and so that I can be more in control of them, I would like to see what else is out there. What I can do that I haven't see on other smart thermostats is I can schedule the heat to come on and shut down for particular days, weeks, months and really for a year in advance. This works perfectly for me as I need to schedule heat when guests are arriving and when they leave so that we are not heating dorms or apartments when they are empty.
Have you seen anything like this out there? I can go month to month, schedule in and out perfectly. So you might ask, why do I want to change thermostats? Well the short version is we no longer have support from the IT department where I work, so I need to find a solution that lets me bypass all of their nonsense and restrictions. 2 weeks ago at home I installed a 7 day programmable King/Atmoz thermostat, and I can control it from my phone or tablet from anywhere in the world. Unfortunately its only a 7 day programmable line voltage thermostat. Here at work I need a full year programmable stat so i can set schedules months at a time.

Do you happen to know the difference between the RTH9585WF (second generation) and the RTH9580WF (first generation). The difference I see is the LCD screen on the 9580 shows "date/time" and the 9585 only shows "time". I'm wondering if the 9585 might work with some smart hubs that the 9580 "might" not and perhaps the 9585 has perhaps a newer wifi chip.
What I don't know is if the 9585 has the same background color options as the 9580.
    Thanks,

how does this unit, gather the humidity? Is it the 'weather' or does it have a sensor? Kinda wish, they incorporated humidity sensor along w/ temperature sensors now days in room smoke/ carbon monoxide detectors... basically, cause, these units are already in newer homes and could help w/ 2 story homes w/ 2 ac units and eliminating hot/ cold (bad circulation/ imbalanced systems) spots.

Don't forget to cut the power. Even though 25V is low. If you some how short the circuit. That can cost you hundreds in repair. So play it safe. Cut the power to the furnace then install.

For me, I like this one because it uses SmartThings that I can control from my phone versus having to have a spying Alexa or Google Assistant in my house. I agree that the historical data is interesting, but - as you said - I don't think it'd do anything to my day-to-day behavior, really. One thing I didn't get from this was whether there's an outside sensor so that it can gather the temp/humidity data? Great video, though.

Is there an override or something I can do in the future on my end to get it to work without Wifi? Thanks

Get the honeywell, the Nest is nothing more than a nightmare, I have had nothing but problems with nest since I've had it. constant disconnects, you have to reboot the whole system from scratch.Go online and look at all the negative reviews and comments, I just purchased the Honeywell RTH9585WF1004 Wi-Fi Smart Color Thermostat, it also has all the features of the Nest plus more and less all the headaches of talking to nest support who don't understand you to start with.

+Matthew Mizushima - Just tested this for you. Home screen still shows full stats, inside and outside temps and humidity. Both fan and system tabs are still shown, but you can't modify the status or temps as it is locked down. Same with Menu settings, you need the password to unlock control. Looks like it would be perfect for an office setting.

Purchased this model a few days ago and inside the sealed box, no operation manual ! Had to find that on their website which isn't the same as having a booklet to study. My only complaint with these thermostats that display the "current" outside temp and humidity is, that information is not specifically outside your location or exactly the temperature outside of your home. That information is obtained from the internet weather websites and those are mostly guessed temps and humidity depending on where those weather stations are located as well as how often they are updated and/or managed by real humans. It would be better to have a WiFi device that mounts outside your home and provides a real time temp and humidity at all times. One other point to make would be to have a small LED that lights up blue or green or red when the system is running when the display is timed to off. We rarely use the "programable set back" temps mainly because our home costs less to heat and cool by leaving the setting set on one temp all day and night such as 78 in summer or 70 winter. We had tried to do what the power and gas company suggests by moving the temp settings up and down 10 degrees however, that costs much more overall in power and gas in our climate area.

I went with this after my HVAC technician strongly suggested it I wanted a nest originally. He told me Honeywell is the best with the track record to prove it honeywells been in business for hundreds of years.

I have three zones in my house, each with it's own old school Honeywell thermo. Lets say I installed a 9000 in each zone, does the app give you an option to control the three different zones?

Does it have tamper proof controls like a screen lock or password to keep unauthorized people from changing the temperature settings? If the screen is locked on the thermostat, are you still able to change the settings with the phone app? Or do you have to go back to the thermostat to physically unlock it first?

    • @darrellwood79

      Yes

@@darrellwood79 Too late my friend. Lol. I already took a chance and purchased it months before you replied. Plus you only answered half the questions. You answered "yes" to the first and second question but the answer to the third question is "no". But Thanks anyway. However, I did notice a fatal flaw in the software. Be aware that if you turn your AC/heat system off using the app...you're screwed. The app becomes greyed out, useless and it locks you out. At this point, you can't turn the AC unit back on or do anything from the app. You'll have to drive all the way back home and turn it on manually from the wall controls. I'm glad I wasn't out of town when I found this out. It seems like a simple fix but its worth noting.

Any changes to the temperature that we make through the app, it takes 7-8 minutes just to reach the actual thermostat and make the change. Any idea what the problem could be? Already checked our wifi and it's performing 100%.

Thank you for a great review. I'd like to mention that Honeywell raised the price by an astonishing 30% since this review with no additional features. Amazon's price is now $249. I'd also like to mention that anyone considering this thermostat consider the Emerson Sensi Wi-Fi thermostat as it does everything the Honeywell thermostat does and it's only $99 on Amazon. In my opinion, the Honeywell unit looks better and their app is nicer but the Sensi does everything the Honeywell unit does at a fraction of the price. I own two Sensi's and very happy with them. I'd like to get the Honeywell thermostat for my condo but at $249, it's hard to justify a unit that costs 2.5X the price of the Sensi.
