      Hi. Yes, they were. I have since moved away from the area, and great finds are now decidedly thin on the ground... Sigh...

    Lovely finds, this was worth watching for seeing that Decca inner sleeve alone!

      That is the marvellous thing about collecting records, isn't it? We have the music, the covers and the inner sleeves alone can be things of beauty.

    Hi Alan, nice Steve Reich albums and also some early stereo classical records. You must live in a parallel universe where all the charity shops have just the best records and no Jim Reeves or Max Bygraves. Things have now got so bad that I recently saw an average copy of Bridge Over Troubled Water in our local charity shop for £15, crazy prices. However I have found some great finds in the past so there is still some hope for us all.
    Cheers, Paul

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul, believe me I have to wade through some dross. I am constantly seeing albums way over-priced these days. I have learned never to question though: everyone's an expert. Best to let them get on with it and hope for the odd one which slips through.

      @@statictraveller Yeah, it takes some dedication to trawl around lots of charity shops. Now I'm retired I will have more time but boot sales and village yard sales have given me the best returns recently. Roll on the spring! Currently listening to The Mekons, The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen on this bleak winters afternoon - highly recommended!

    Oh Alan,this almost brings me to tears.....I so much miss all the wonderful decades I had finding Classical vinyl...I am really glad you posted this for our pleasure.....I adore THE PLANETS by HOLST so much that I did a ranking of KING CRIMSON albums "69-"74 and put In The Wake of Poseidon last...reasons being...a soul-less retread of In The Court of the Crimson King AND....a ghastly rip-off of Mars Bringer of War.....SACRILIGE!!!!!!......I played my von KARAJAN vinyl PLANETS endlessly as an 18year old.....THE PLANETS is the template for "PROG"...just as BEETHOVEN and WAGNER were the originators of "HEAVY METAL"....sigh....

      I am so sorry. Please, wipe your eyes and blow your nose on a tissue my dear David.
      I have not watched your Crimson videos, I'm afraid. I have been taking a short break from viewing. I think you might have to do a little video about your classical finds and your love for The Planets. That kind of thing is so inspirational.

    Hi Alan, always love your work. Drooling over the Reich (In dreams I find OG Reich in charity shops, so I'm glad someone is living my dream!!). Love you highlighting the other classical records including the late 50s Stereo and showing us the labels. Of course I look, but never find. Still I keep looking! Cheers- Dean

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dean- great to hear from you! I couldn't believe my eyes when the first record I pulled from the shelves was Steve Reich: finding 3 was quite amazing. Will it ever happen again? Unlikely....
      Classical records are not for most of the VC, but if people can gain a little knowledge from this kind of video, then that's wonderful.
      Can you imagine a day when you stop looking? I can't.... best not to think about it...

    Lovely records, Alan. My Reichs are also almost exclusively on CD, so I can imagine how nice that felt to come across these. You should watch/listen to Six Marimbas done on my favourite family of instruments. Six Marimbas for Gamelan, arr. by Iwan Gunavan, that if you haven’t already. It’s available here on TH-cam. Thank you for tagging me earlier and for showing more classical. The VC as I know it is a much more wonderful, kind, jolly, wise, challenging, creative, and lovely place simply because you happen to be in it.

    Octet and Koyaanisqatsi are essential, although the lack of visuals dilutes it. Drumming a little dull, I vaguely recall seeing that live when Reich was in the UK with his ensemble back in the 80s' maybe.

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never listened to the Glass without visuals, so it could well lack something. That is one soundtrack inextricably linked to the film. I am looking forward to the Octet. One of his I am not familiar with.

    • @miketomlin6040
      @miketomlin6040 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@statictraveller It brings the visuals back, it does stand alone as music better than the Powaqqatsi score did. Did you see Stunty's take on Glass?, talk about maximalist audacity, his maverick take bordered on 'hate speaketh' delivered with his usual earnestness and integrity. Octet Lp was the weaker of his 3 ECM efforts, Piccolo flute a little irritating. The other Side much stronger

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miketomlin6040 I will have to go back on Stunty's video. Though reading your comments to each other is all I really need...

    • @miketomlin6040
      @miketomlin6040 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@statictraveller I love Stunty, he might be the Numero Uno vinylista in the VC, but le garcon has an immunity to rhapsody at times. But, I find his more cerebral vista of value. He got me looking at Glass post 2010, I had no idea he'd butchered Lodger as well as Low and Heroes quite recently.

  • @Thevinylscavenger
    @Thevinylscavenger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now I see the sort of thing and knowledge I'm lacking. Holst with cover I've never seen. Wasn't the Reich with the blue cover Psalms there? Of course that difficult third album for Steve took six years to complete. Those last too yes they didn't stand out so much at all who knows what I've been past and missed out on. I doubt my ears would understand anyway you have to get so familiar with a piece to notice. Cheers Alan.

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing to look out for is the code with classical LPs: SXL for Decca, original recording by on the label. SAX for Columbia. Blue / Silver label and Stereo on front sleeve. But, later pressings can actually sound better.
      I am always learning. The Phillips label is not one I am very knowledgeable on at all.
