This was a brilliant, BRILLIANT year. All five nominees were deserving. But holy crap, how did Ralph Fiennes not win for Schindler's List? He was the absolute personification of evil.
RALPH FINNES was UTTERLY ROBBED. He truly deserved it as Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. His performance was utterly brilliant - he did the accent, he did the sociopathy, he did the cruelty, he did the evil, he did the look, he did EVERYTHING.

I agree. I like TLJ but Fieness should have won. TLJ had a much stronger claim for supporting actor for his role as Thaddeus Stevens in Lincoln. I think that was why his head was shaved.

Anyone who thinks that DiCaprio should have won over Fiennes(whose subtle, nuanced and genuinely terrifying performance is regarded as the best supporting actor performance of the entire 90s decade and one of the greatest villainous performances ever) is arguably an idiot who knows both about acting. Everyone in the world agrees that this award was indeed Fiennes who is literally topping all alternative lists.

While Tommy Lee Jones gave a great performance, it's pretty obvious this award was meant to compensate for previous losses. Fiennes or DiCaprio should have won this year.
Yes, Fiennes should have won hands down by a million country miles (Leo was very good but Fiennes was way way way excellent). The Academy did the same thing the previous year when Robert Downey Jr's portrayal of Chaplin lost out to Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. Pacino already had several nominations for earlier work, one of which should have won an Oscar (Godfather) but they didn't give him the Oscar so they took it from RDJ for a less deserving piece of work.

I love TLJ, the Fugitive is a fantastic film and I would never begrudge him this, his work is always first rate and he deserves to have had more than just one Oscar in his career. But he was up against DiCaprio and Fiennes giving the performances of their lives, it still shocks me nearly 20 years later that one of those two didn't win.
Well, at least Ralph Fiennes was gracious enough to smile and applaud when his name wasn't called. He's an exceptionally gracious man, I think -- which makes it all the more shocking that he should have been so convincing onscreen as an evil Nazi.

I'm not a big fan of Leo, and I hate that many people almost think it's the end of the world that he hasn't won an Oscar yet, but his role in " What's Eating Gilbert Grape " is extremely difficult to play well, and it's not something I believe any actor can do. It really stands out from all the other performances I've seen from him, and I wish to see him play a role as challenging as that one again. I know he can win an Oscar if he does that
Josef Hautala Gilbert Grape was one of his first roles and he was just a kid or teen , so there is so many great child actors that after they grow up they suck or they are just average maybe that was Leo's case thats why I dont take that one as a reference , Catch me if you can, in that one he was just OK nothing that an average actor teaming with a great director cannot do , the only movie where he really did a great job and actually made me change my mind about his work was The Aviator , in that movie he really blow up the screen , very impressive performance and after that he just got better and better thats why I said that before Scorcese he was just a pretty baby face with average acting skills
I don't think anybody could replicate what Fiennes did. He wasn't like your typical loud mouthed villain, who used his voice to sound intimidating. But, rather he just played like a normal guy, though so intimidating and psychotic
Not over Fiennes or even Postlethwaite at all. Technically, Fiennes and Postlethwaite gave way better performances. And if I add the snubbed performances as well, like Richard Jordan in Gettysburg, Ben Kingsley in Schindler's List and most importantly Val Kilmer in Tombstone, DiCaprio is out of the race by a country mile.
I have always said and still believe that if Tom Hanks had not been nominated for "Philadelphia", I truly believe Liam would have won . Any other group of nominees that Tom Hanks is not in, Liam Neeson wins that Oscar.
I think everyone misunderstood this, okay sure the other nominees were fantastic, but Tommy Lee Jones does something only a few actors do, they make the character so real, Gene Hackman does it to. They don't overact, they just are the part, as if it were real life. Jones acted in The Fugitive just exactly how a Law Enforcement Marshall would have in that situation. Tommy Lee Jones deserved it. Have to disagree with this. Sam Gerard was a role that any actor could play, but to play such a terrifying monster such as Amon Goeth, and yet bring a little humanity to him (not much but still), that's what I call REAL acting. Fiennes should have won, IMO. Nothing against TLJ, but I feel the wrong man won for what was the easiest role out of all five nominees that year.
The fugitive is a movie that I constantly rewatch and tommy lee’s performance has really stood the test of time which makes me think that he totally deserved to win this
It was just Tommy lee jones playing Tommy lee Jones. He did a fine job, but he was nothing special. He was not only nowhere near as good as any of the other nominees (especially Fiennes) but he shouldn’t even have been nominated, Sean Penn should have been nominated instead for Carlitos Way or Val Kilmer in Tombstone.

I have always loved the shout out TLJ gave Harrison Ford at the end. That was also a slam at The Academy for not even nominating Ford for Best Actor for The Fugitive.

He lived the perfect life that we should have lived - tempted at all points and yet He NEVER sinned. Ralph Fiennes was mesmerizing in Schindler's List. He managed to be absolutely terrifying without going over-the-top. A truly powerful and deep performance. Leonardo DiCaprio was also great in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He completely disappeared into his role. He's yet to top this amazing performance. And don't get me wrong: I thought Jones did a great job in The Fugivite. However, there were at least two performances that year more deserving an Oscar.

That was another TOUGH year. I actually met Tommy Lee when he did US Marshall's they filmed 1 block from my house on the South side of Chicago. He was very nice to everyone and even answered our questions. He smiled and talked, very friendly nice guy. He said we are filming the fugitive part 2. Anyway, that was a tough year and DiCaprio was amazing that year too. I wouldn't have been able to vote because I cant decide who did a better job that year. They were all outstanding. Too hard to call in my opinion.
Other notable performances that year were by Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in "Tombstone", Ben Kingsley as Itzhak Stern in "Schindler's List", Sean Penn as David Kleinfeld in "Carlito's Way", and certain actors in "True Romance".
Damn did Val Kilmer got robbed!! His performance in Tombstone was definition of "spectacular". Out of these 5, Fiennes was by far the best and should have won, hands down!!
It's bad enough that Leonardo DiCaprio didn't win, but to have him lose to Tommy Lee Jones' role in The Fugitive is just a slap to the face. Now, if he had lost to Ralph Fiennes, that would be understandable, seeing as both actors gave absolutely spectacular performances. What about Tommy Lee Jones' performance was Oscar-worthy? He did give a good performance, yes, but NOTHING like that of Leo's or Ralph's.

People say DiCaprio shouldn't have gotten the Oscar, but Fiennes should've. Fiennes was great, but to me, DiCaprio's performance was a much more difficult as playing a ruthless character who turns good in the end, isn't something that people haven't seen before. There aren't many roles where actors play mentally handicapped characters very well that were convincing. The only ones that come to mind are Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man and Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. But Arnie Grape had a different type of handicap than Raymond or Forrest had. Those two had certain talents we see, while we don't see any talents, aside from climbing the water tower, that Arnie has, as he's home the whole time, except when Gilbert goes into town to work or they go some place. Playing someone like Arnie Grape would be difficult as you don't want to act like you're making fun of people of that certain handicap, but you want to play the character as he's supposed to be acted. While I do think Fiennes would be a great runner up, either of them would be a better choice to win than Jones' performance in The Fugitive, which is just an decant, okay performance.

This is a really tough choice. Dicaprio, Jones, and Fiennes all created iconic characters with their roles. In the end, I think Fiennes did the best job acting as Goeth.
Anyone who says TLJ is the same in every movie clearly hasn't seen Cobb, which was the movie that required him to go with the bald look as seen here. Fiennes was fantastic, malkovich played one of the great all time screen villains and Dicrapio was quite good even at a young age. But considering that the fugitive was based on a highly popular and beloved tv show where this character had already been portrayed, TLJ was nothing but captivating and truly unique in what he did with his performance. His entire arc is what drives the movie. And In a movie where Tommy's most remembered for his snappy dialogue, it's the quiet moments where his character really shines. Between facial ticks and most importantly, his eyes. His mouth would say one thing, his eyes told a different story altogether. That's the brilliance of his performance and why I believe he won the Oscar. He absolutely deserved it.

And as much as I like Tommy Lee Jones, and as good as I thought he was in "The Fugitive", Ralph Fiennes not winning for Schindler's List just defies all logic. I just cannot wrap my head around the fact that he was robbed of that Oscar. And 30 years later it still makes my brain hurt thinking about that. I think that Sam Gerard is a good character, but Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth was and is a timeless piece of art that will stand the test of time forever. Ralph, I am so sorry you were robbed.
He won the Oscar because he carried the whole film and took the straightforward character to heights no one expected. For that reason alone the Academy chose wisely

Ray was great no doubt… but he didn’t carry a whole movie like Tommy did in the Fugitive….mind you, a movie that barely read off its own script. He outshined the lead and everyone else in the fugitive AS a supporting actor. I love Ray, but he was also going toe to toe with Liam. Close call but Tommy deserved it, both are amazing actors in their own right.
If ever there was an oscar injustice this was it. Ralph Fiennes was so far ahead of all other performances it was hardly possible to breathe looking at him inhabit the role of Amon Goeth. Shame on the academy.
And Leo, he convinced thousands of people with such honesty that he was an actor who had a mental disability instead of an actor playing a character with a mental disability. It was his first major film role at only 16 years old too. IMO that category for that year was one of the few in which it could've been anyone's Oscar as they were all so talented in their roles.

I was in Poland last year on an expedition to learn about the history of the Holocaust and the 1st day the showed us this movie in the bus and it was the 1st time I saw it and the thing that stuck with me for the next 3 days was Ralph Fiennes performance. it was the 1st time a movie affected me like that. I mean the job he did in that movie was so amazing that he was so terrifying and made Amon Geoth so real. it wasn't easy.

True. Actually Val and Ralph were indeed absolute toe to toe for me. None of the others even compared. Val and Ralph indeed gave us two of the greatest supporting acting performances of 90s like 1&2. However if I have to choose one, I would go with Fiennes.

I generally agree that it should go to the best performance, but I think in the cases of some people who've contributed so much, they deserve an Oscar.
This is still considered one of the great Oscar flubs in Academy history. And no disrespect to TLJ, who was great fun to watch in "The Fugitive." But there are reasons people are still talking about Ralph Fiennes' performance.

Yes, Fiennes should have won hands down by a million country miles (Leo was very good but Fiennes was way way way excellent). The Academy did the same thing the previous year when Robert Downey Jr's portrayal of Chaplin lost out to Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. Pacino already had several nominations for earlier work, one of which should have won an Oscar (Godfather) but they didn't give him the Oscar so they took it from RDJ for a less deserving piece of work.
This was shame.. Ralph Fiennes almost carried the film Schindler's List as portraying a perfect villain.. he had to have this..

I love TLJ, the Fugitive is a fantastic film and I would never begrudge him this, his work is always first rate and he deserves to have had more than just one Oscar in his career. But he was up against DiCaprio and Fiennes giving the performances of their lives, it still shocks me nearly 20 years later that one of those two didn't win.
Well, at least Ralph Fiennes was gracious enough to smile and applaud when his name wasn't called. He's an exceptionally gracious man, I think -- which makes it all the more shocking that he should have been so convincing onscreen as an evil Nazi.

I'm not a big fan of Leo, and I hate that many people almost think it's the end of the world that he hasn't won an Oscar yet, but his role in " What's Eating Gilbert Grape " is extremely difficult to play well, and it's not something I believe any actor can do. It really stands out from all the other performances I've seen from him, and I wish to see him play a role as challenging as that one again. I know he can win an Oscar if he does that

I don't think anybody could replicate what Fiennes did. He wasn't like your typical loud mouthed villain, who used his voice to sound intimidating. But, rather he just played like a normal guy, though so intimidating and psychotic

Not over Fiennes or even Postlethwaite at all. Technically, Fiennes and Postlethwaite gave way better performances. And if I add the snubbed performances as well, like Richard Jordan in Gettysburg, Ben Kingsley in Schindler's List and most importantly Val Kilmer in Tombstone, DiCaprio is out of the race by a country mile.

I think everyone misunderstood this, okay sure the other nominees were fantastic, but Tommy Lee Jones does something only a few actors do, they make the character so real, Gene Hackman does it to. Sam Gerard was a role that any actor could play, but to play such a terrifying monster such as Amon Goeth, and yet bring a little humanity to him (not much but still), that's what I call REAL acting.
Fiennes should have won, IMO. Nothing against TLJ, but I feel the wrong man won for what was the easiest role out of all five nominees that year.

He was not only nowhere near as good as any of the other nominees (especially Fiennes) but he shouldn’t even have been nominated, Sean Penn should have been nominated instead for Carlitos Way or Val Kilmer in Tombstone.

He is Holy (perfectly good/righteous and separate from sin) which means that H e is perfect in justice - and if He were to judge you by the moral law (we’ve already looked at 4 commandments) would you be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? The answer is hell - the wrath of God upon you for your sin. Is that concerning?

He lived the perfect life that we should have lived - tempted at all points and yet He NEVER sinned. Leonardo DiCaprio was also great in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He completely disappeared into his role. He's yet to top this amazing performance.
And don't get me wrong: I thought Jones did a great job in The Fugivite. However, there were at least two performances that year more deserving an Oscar.

That was another TOUGH year. I actually met Tommy Lee when he did US Marshall's they filmed 1 block from my house on the South side of Chicago. He was very nice to everyone and even answered our questions. He smiled and talked, very friendly nice guy. He said we are filming the fugitive part 2. Anyway, that was a tough year and DiCaprio was amazing that year too. I wouldn't have been able to vote because I cant decide who did a better job that year. They were all outstanding. Too hard to call in my opinion.

Loved him. One of the best actors England has produced. He waa absolutely on par with DDL in ITNOTF.
Other notable performances that year were by Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in "Tombstone", Ben Kingsley as Itzhak Stern in "Schindler's List", Sean Penn as David Kleinfeld in "Carlito's Way", and certain actors in "True Romance".

People say DiCaprio shouldn't have gotten the Oscar, but Fiennes should've. Fiennes was great, but to me, DiCaprio's performance was a much more difficult as playing a ruthless character who turns good in the end, isn't something that people haven't seen before. There aren't many roles where actors play mentally handicapped characters very well that were convincing.
The only ones that come to mind are Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man and Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. But Arnie Grape had a different type of handicap than Raymond or Forrest had. Those two had certain talents we see, while we don't see any talents, aside from climbing the water tower, that Arnie has, as he's home the whole time, except when Gilbert goes into town to work or they go some place. Playing someone like Arnie Grape would be difficult as you don't want to act like you're making fun of people of that certain handicap, but you want to play the character as he's supposed to be acted.
While I do think Fiennes would be a great runner up, either of them would be a better choice to win than Jones' performance in The Fugitive, which is just an decant, okay performance.

This is a really tough choice. Dicaprio, Jones, and Fiennes all created iconic characters with their roles. In the end, I think Fiennes did the best job acting as Goeth.
This is one of the most stacked supporting actor list I’ve ever seen. A few of those guys would’ve won in other years.
Anyone who says TLJ is the same in every movie clearly hasn't seen Cobb, which was the movie that required him to go with the bald look as seen here. Fiennes was fantastic, malkovich played one of the great all time screen villains and Dicrapio was quite good even at a young age.
But considering that the fugitive was based on a highly popular and beloved tv show where this character had already been portrayed, TLJ was nothing but captivating and truly unique in what he did with his performance. His entire arc is what drives the movie. And In a movie where Tommy's most remembered for his snappy dialogue, it's the quiet moments where his character really shines. Between facial ticks and most importantly, his eyes.
His mouth would say one thing, his eyes told a different story altogether. That's the brilliance of his performance and why I believe he won the Oscar. He absolutely deserved it.

I just cannot wrap my head around the fact that he was robbed of that Oscar. And 30 years later it still makes my brain hurt thinking about that. I think that Sam Gerard is a good character, but Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth was and is a timeless piece of art that will stand the test of time forever. Ralph, I am so sorry you were robbed.

I was in Poland last year on an expedition to learn about the history of the Holocaust and the 1st day the showed us this movie in the bus and it was the 1st time I saw it and the thing that stuck with me for the next 3 days was Ralph Fiennes performance.
it was the 1st time a movie affected me like that. I mean the job he did in that movie was so amazing that he was so terrifying and made Amon Geoth so real. it wasn't easy.

Yes Ralph deserved it but can we talk about how stunningly beautiful Marissa Tomei was here in her 20s? I mean she’s still gorgeous today but wow in her prime, I was drooling lol

True. Actually Val and Ralph were indeed absolute toe to toe for me. None of the others even compared. Val and Ralph indeed gave us two of the greatest supporting acting performances of 90s like 1&2. However if I have to choose one, I would go with Fiennes.
@@Izaan2810 I've seen a great deal from 1993, and my 5 in that category are currently Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Tommy Lee Jones, Pete Postlethwaite, and Ben Kingsley (for either Schindler's List or Searching For Bobby Fischer).
@@flaccidusminimus2170 Good list. I personally would have replaced TLJ for Denzel Washington for Philadelphia. But yeah I found DiCaprio's performance over the top as well and one dimensional compared to these performances you mentioned and probably wouldn't have nominated him either. For me it's easily Val vs Ralph at the end. One gave us the greatest Doc Holliday and arguably the greatest western acting performance ever, other gave us arguably the most terrifying and chilling movie villain ever... Both could have won. Unfortunately their movies had to be released in the same year.

Love Tommy's performance but I felt like this was one of those lifetime achievement Oscars. Fiennes was way more deserving.

I generally agree that it should go to the best performance, but I think in the cases of some people who've contributed so much, they deserve an Oscar.

This is still considered one of the great Oscar flubs in Academy history. And no disrespect to TLJ, who was great fun to watch in "The Fugitive." But there are reasons people are still talking about Ralph Fiennes' performance.
