  • How To Fit a Motor to a Telescope
    I thought it was a daunting task to add a motor to a telescope, turns out, its quick and easy (WHEN YOU KNOW HOW)
    Watch this quick unboxing , explanaiton of controls and short fitting guide before you order and fit a motor to your telescope.
    With a motorised right accention slow controller the telescope can track celestial odjects with very little adjustment needed.
    Makes using it far more enjoyable and easy!!
    This demonstration is using an AstroMaster 130 EQ with a V3 CG3 Equatorial mount. (Motor includes a bracked for CG2 mount fitting also) using a Celestron Logic Drive precision DC Motor Drive - battery life around 40 hours per 9v battery.

    1:33 For those that don't understand: The "n" and "s" thing is about hemisphere, if you live below equator you live on southern hemisphere, so you set "S", but if you live in norhern hemisphere like for example Poland you have to set "N".

    Hi Dave, thank you for the clear video, but when I use mine I have everything setup the exact same way you have yours, yet it doesn't actually move the telescope itself. I tried with just one weight too but the motor wont actually move it.

    • @gregorypdearth
      @gregorypdearth 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a simple but tricky drive system.
      You have to tighten the knob to lock the telescope to the gears for that axis. You should not be able to move the telescope by hand. If you can swing the telescope around that axis by hand, the motor is just turning the worm gear but not biting the teeth of the round gear.
      But if the tension knob is TOO tight, the harder worm gear will EAT the threads of the circular gear. The gear should be the same color all around. If part of it is silver, those teeth have been worn down and you will need to fix this before the motor drive or even the manual controls will work.
      And the motor drive itself has a very specific connection to the worm gear shaft. If it isn't tightened properly against the flat part of the worm gear shaft, the motor won't make the worm gear move.
      Finally, the telescope might not seem to be moving if the motor is on the slowest setting. Crank the knob on the control box up (the motor should get louder). The movement should then be detectable.
      It is really easy to miss something even if you follow these directions here given the questionable operational and build quality of this enigmatic equipment mount.

      You might want to check that the axis shafts aren't too tight. My Celestron EQ-1 mount came from the factory with mounts that were so tight and the worm gear misaligned so badly that the manual RA knob struggled to turn it by hand. There is a nut inside the mount under a plastic cover for this, same for the declination shaft.
      The mount also seems come packed with grease that's so thick it resembles glue more than a lubricant. Get that out of there and replace with some quality grease while you're sorting out the axis shafts. Your telescope will absolutely love you for it. These mounts seem to be poorly assembled from the factory, they work, but only just. TLC required.

    That declination motor is a piece of junk right out of the Eighties. Very poorly designed even for being at least 40 years old. As far as mounting the battery, I just used some velcro and stuck it to the side of the motor box. That way I don't have to fiddle with the box to change the battery.
