  • The second of two videos demonstrating how to fit the basic model RA motor to both the Sky Watcher EQ1 and EQ2 telescope mountings. To keep the video length to a minimum we have split this video in two - this part deals with the EQ2 motor.

    You know, if you used the other end of the key spanner to tighten the bolt, it would have gone on a lot easier! Great thinkers sometimes miss the obvious! Great video btw, helped me out. :)

    Man am I glad I came across this video when I first got my 80EQ I did a video saying the moter drive is useless because it didn't look like the moter drive was doing anything now that I've finally taken the time to try and wanna learn how to use the Celestron PowerSeeker 80EQ I might have second thoughts gonna try the moter drive out tonight see how it works out.

      It needs to be polar aligned, so as long as it's polar aligned it will match the stars

    Do I have to undo the screw on the motor drive connection to be able to turn it manually with the stick on the other end? It doesn't seem to turn otherwise and I don't want to force it and break it.

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there, yes that's correct. To use the RA slow-motion control knob you will need to temporarily disengage the little silver knurled screw that secures the motor output sleeve on to the RA worm shaft. Alternatively, the telescope can be pushed or pulled to position as there is a 'slipping clutch' on both RA and DEC axes that allows the telescope tube to be moved without using the slo-motion gears. But of course, this is a fairly crude way of positioning the instrument and it easy to overshoot/undershoot the target. This is a mild shortcoming of the economy motor systems. There is a version of the RA drive that has a handset equipped with forward and reverse buttons. I hope this helps. KR A&NC

    I bought one of these, put in a new battery, set up good polar alignment and have the setting on it's fastest. However the target still slips out the eyepiece as the drive cannot keep up. Any tips on what I can do?

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Jbirtwisle et al, Hi there, a moderate amount of drift is to be expected with this type of basic arrangement but the motor should be capable of maintaining the target within the FOV of a 25mm eyepiece for about 30mins - not dead centre but within the field. It is not accurate enough - and neither is the EQ2 mount robust enough for that matter - for anything but short exposure (quarter of a second and shorter at best) photography through the telescope tube (though the mtr will allow wide-angle photography with the camera and wide angle lens riding piggy-back). Anything you are seeing that is significantly worse than this sounds like the unit may be faulty and should be returned whence it came for replacement. I hope this helps. KR RJD ANTV

    Would this be suitable for basic dSLR wide field photography? I know there are devices like the iOptron Skytracker out there but they seem to be a more complicated way to do it. I'm not going to spend thousands and this looks like it might work. Maximum load would be about 4 kg and longest lens is a 300mm f/2.8.

      You will only be able to take:
      Lunar (using DSLR attached to telescope)
      Planetary (using video lucky imaging [video through telescope, stack best frames in Autostakkert!2 and RegiStax])
      Limited widefield DSO (Andromeda, Orion Nebula) with DSLR riding piggy-back on the EQ2 tube rings.

    Could I attached this skywatcher motor to a celestron eq mount?

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, your question is too broad to answer 'off the cuff' as it were. The mount known widely as the EQ2 and sold for decades by SkyWatcher has certainly made appearances in near identical form in the Celestron range of products, and was probably made in the same factory. But there are usually small brand specific differences, some trivial, others not so. You will need to equip yourself with the details of the exact model and age of the mounting. By all means re-post the details here and although we don't have the answer, a viewer might. I would also suggest this is a good question for a public astronomy forum - as you are likely to find like-minded folk who have already tried it. I hope this helps. KR RJD A&NTV

      Hi there. It's a multiple-choice answer. Is it:
      A. A means of steadily rotating the RA axis to remove the visual effect of the rotation of the Earth about its polar axis.
      or
      B. A cunning device to remove excess terminal punctuation.
