California is more heartbreaking when you know that she wrote it after her label at the time dropped her because she wasn’t selling enough for their liking! 😢

the music video for casual was so clever with its metaphors. the way the relationship could only exist in the siren’s space (underwater), which is suffocating for chappell, and never in an environment where chappell felt safe and at home. such a good way of portraying a toxic draining relationship where you have to bend yourself to satisfy them while they would never do the same for you

"No leaves are brown" has to be a reference to the song California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas, in which the first line is "All the leaves are brown" as a reason to leave for California. Chappell turns this on its head, missing the seasons of the Midwest and showing that California dreams aren't necessarily all they're made out to be.
As someone who has spent her whole life in really rural areas, I really appreciate Chapell Roan. Left leaning people tend to not care about rural areas because they view them as a lost cause, so to see a queer icon like Chapell not only not ignore them, but full on embrace them is heartwarming.

Yes! As a queer person who grew up in Texas, seeing someone like her making queer music while incorporating experiences and aesthetics from rural areas makes me so happy. I still feel a sense of nostalgia for where I grew up, despite being glad to now live somewhere where I can be more accepted. Queer people exist everywhere, including those kinds of places, which is something I feel more people need to remember. Pink Pony Club is one of my favorites

okay so I can't substantiate the veracity of the story, but there's a little anecdote that went around about how Glen Keane wasn't too sure about the last moment of "part of your world" in the little mermaid where Ariel is reaching her hand out, whether it was too cheesy to keep in there or not. And the story goes that decades later, he learns from a woman that told him that as a child, she wanted nothing more than to reach out to her and help her out of the water at that moment. And THAT. THAT EXACT EMOTION. _That's how a lot of us feel watching/listening to California right now_ The character that Chappell builds out in these music videos, while far from helpless, invokes this feeling of the listener desperately wanting to reach into the video to help her up.

I remember the first time i clicked on one of your videos I'd seen them reccomended a few times, but I always thought they were hate-watch videos, because of the "trying to" part in the title. Couldn't be further from the truth, of course! Love seeing these vids pop up, really enjoying the emotional openess you take into this music and into experiencing new art.

YESSSSS I WAS DYING FOR A REACTION TO CASUAL!! Someone pointed out the significance of the Siren in the music vid. Chappell and the Siren's relationship only thrives when the Siren wants it to, giving her complete control. As well as, the Siren can go to Chappell's world but the closest Chappell can get to the Siren's world is a pool or making her room look like the ocean. Chappel never gets in the ocean. The song and the video BREAKS ME, its SO good!!! I've never even been in a casual relationship but i get attached super easy and feel deep like Chappell so i ADORE the song! Also California makes me SOB too! Love these dude, great reactions as always!!💙

I don't know if someone commented it on the last video but I feel like since you did California this time I'll say it: Chappell Roan was signed with a label about *9 years* ago and since then was dropped from said label, was an independent artist, had to move back home for a pandemic, moved back to LA, got signed to a new label, still wasn't getting much traction, started talking about giving music one more year before she was going to officially moved back home for good. Few months after deciding she had one more year of trying she performed at Coachella, The Gov Ball, and while she declined, she was invited to perform at the white house for pride.

Sadly, I can never experience Chappell Roan for the first time ever again, but I can watch as others do and seeing people just instantly fall head over heels for her stunning voice, amazing lyrics, and immaculate musicality is the next best thing! She's a natural born performer through and through and I've never related to an artist this much before. She floors me in the best of ways and I love seeing you and other people just getting hit in the face with all that is her! Thanks for sharing your reaction! noah kahan could be a really fun artist to check out! his most recent album 'stick season' is so incredible!! my favourite songs from the album are strawberry wine, everywhere everthing, and halloween, but the most popular ones are northern attitude and stick season

Someone at my local pride did a chappell cover and I rushed over to their stage i was so hyped to dance along!!
California was written when she was about to give up on music. She had dropped everything, moved to California, signed to a label, released some music. She wasnt getting enough attention that her label decided to drop her, right as lockdown began. She was stuck in a strange state, with no contact with her friends and family, with what felt like nothing to show for all the work she had done.

So for more context to California, you mention disregarding her current success to think about the song and how it might mean to take a break or take a step away but that it’s not over. I’ll have you know you are spot on. At some point Chappell’s record company dropped her and she ended up moving back home and being a nanny and a bartender I believe? She had taken a break from the music business, presumably after she wrote California. To me it seems this song was Chappell giving herself permission to take a step back and reevaluate some things before coming back stronger than ever before. She’s such an inspiration and honestly California speaks truth to all my own fears about not gaining success in my dream career and having to take a step back or quit all together because people won’t like my work. But I know that if I’m ever to succeed, I’ll need to put myself out there or even move to a bigger city if I ever want to be recognized and compensated for my creative vision. California is so beautiful and bittersweet

I highly suggest Noah Kahan, particularly his most recent album (and the deluxe version), especially Orange Juice, View Between Villages (extended), and Call Your Mom, but all of the songs are heart breaking. If you want a less upsetting one, Maisie Peters' album The Good Witch is a great one, especially The Band And I.

And you already did! I love the Casual video so much, gorgeous and achy. If you do a part three, I'd recommend Coffee and Kaleidoscope, though I don't think either of them have music videos. (I think you've watched all her music videos by now haha.)
Have you considered reacting to Hole, if you're not already familiar with them? Super influential grunge rock and so much fun to listen to, while also having really intricate and cool lyrics. I'd recommend Doll Parts, Celebrity Skin, Miss World, and Malibu.
