Funny for you to bring up Olivia and Conan because they all share the same producer, Dan Nigro. Chappel even did backing vocals on a few songs on Guts including Lacy and is opening for Olivia on tour! Anyway, great reaction as always!
I’m pretty sure “California” is about her being dropped from her label before she got to the one she’s at now. “To think I almost had it going, but I let you down”
Chappell stated in an interview that California was wrote before the label drop and it was about her being sad and lonely in L.A. and she wanted her dad to come pick her up because she let herself down and was homesick and had to create a life by-herself and it was hard and lonely so the “I” in the “I let you down” is herself and how she thought she’d instantly feel like herself in Cali but that wasn’t the reality…yet. Thank you for my Ted Talk.🤍✨🍒
@@Luscent Kudos for being the first person I've seen to pick up on the California Dreaming reference in "no leaves are brown" which is an absolutely brilliant move by Chappell to essentially create the sequel to that song, if things in LA don't work out for the Mamas and Papas. Dreaming of moving there, then (part 2) missing home once you do it. You nailed it.
Femininomenon is mainly about how women struggle to climax when intimate with men, and we need to get what we want. 'Got so close and then you lost it'. That 'play a song with fckin beat!' is like, 'satisfy me! Meet my needs!' When she's not finishing her sentences in her chorus, it's because she's not finishing - in that sense.
I mean that’s definitely an interpretation of it yes but Chappell said in an interview it’s mainly about how it’s a phenomenon that sleeping with a man is better than sleeping with a woman bc it’s not lol and she said that it’s also feminine bc it’s about what women want and need so they mashed the words together and made a song about it haha like “why can’t any man” please a woman like another woman can, at least in her experiences
She’s fully gay. She made Pink Pony Club at the end of her last relationship with a man (a couple years before this album out), then wrote this album while she was realizing she’s a lesbian. That’s why all her references to men are about disappointment :)
yes!! you said it sounds like a drag song and chappell is very inspired by drag!! i kind of feel like she has a bit of a drag persona herself that she puts on for performances 💚
California is genuinely one of my favs on the album. As someone who is from the Midwest like Chappell and is a part of the queer community, this song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of leaving the midwest but still longing to be home. There is something truly special about the midwest and the culture of it. Chappell wrote this song during covid and was struggling as an artist during this time. She actually got dropped from her record label during covid. She truly felt like she was letting her family down. And I think this album is really full circle for the rise and the fall of being queer and wanting to have that outlandish lifestyle but still holding onto the grounds that shaped you.
So fun hearing you describe it with words like words like “cartoonish” “funny” “over dramatic” (in a good way) and finally “oh, it’s camp!” I can hear Chappell smiling somewhere
I absolutely love "My Kink is Karma", "Pink Pony Club" & "California"-- but my favorite is "Kaleidescope." She wrote Kaleidoscope because she had told her best friend she was in love with her. She told her and her friend asked for time to process what she'd said. She wrote "Kaleidescope" to say that It would all work out- That love is love and over time even if her didn't also have romantic feelings for her, that she could eventually get over her feelings and transmute it back into just loving her as a friend... I've heard her interviewed and this has come up as a very frequent issue among gay people- especially women since they're often very close to their female friends. I tear up every time I hear it.

you hit the nail on the head saying "cheerleaders!!" for HOT TO GO! it's literally meant to be a cheerleader song because chappell wanted to be one in highschool!!
Pink Pony Club is one of the few songs to trigger heart-wrenching emotion in me throughout my life. That's really what made her click for me. And her music is just so fun, cute, emotional, sex-positive, and queer
It's so interesting to me that you kept mentioning how the production is all over the place, the emotions are up and down and all over the place...and I just saw an interview with Chappell where she talks about her struggles with bipolar disorder. when she headlines her own shows, she likes to have local drag queens as her opening acts (and it’s expected that audience members will tip) !! her shows also have themes so people can dress up for the shows and it’s very camp and silly and fun, i just think the atmosphere she creates for her art and performances is such a celebration of queer sex and love and joy. it’s so fun to have beautiful, fun, upbeat songs about queer sex especially lesbian/sapphic sex when in our culture it’s so taboo for queer women to admit that we aren’t these chaste demure sexless women who just want to hold hands and go on picnics and do one another’s makeup… sometimes we want to get freaky with it!! it sparks so much queer joy that a young gay woman being so vulnerable and honest about her sexuality is becoming such a pop sensation. chappell roan you will always be famous

Honestly kind of kills me not to have Pink Pony on that list but California hits me in the my life feels as a Midwesterner who has spent most of my adult life away from it. Also, you have to check out her Tiny Desk performance if you haven’t already!
I listen to this album so much. It's hard to pick a top 5. Right now, in no particular order my top 5 is guilty pleasure, pink pony club, red wine super nova, coffee, naked in mahattan
my top 5 are hot to go!, my kink is karma, red wine supernova, pink pony club and picture you :)) i only found chappell recently but she really just gets it. been listening to her everyday since i found her cause she brings so much comfort, validation and joy that i badly need right now (and probably always.) she reminds me how messy and fun and okay it is to be queer, as someone who lives in an environment that shuns it. she’s inspiring
I feel like you'd really enjoy Allie X's new album "Girl With No Face". Its very much goth synthpop and its honestly my favorite album ever lol. Also, I'm so happy Chappell is getting the recognition she deserves 😭
I love every song on this album, but here's my top eight. 8. Kaleidoscope 7. After Midnight 6. Naked in Manhattan 5. Femininomenon 4. My Kink is Karma 3. Casual 2. Picture You 1. Pink Pony Club

At 36 I thought my clubbing days were over but this album is making me want to go again . Just imagining a Chappel song come on at one of my local gay clubs, the ABSOLUTE VIBES. edit : oh yeah my top 5. 5- Casual 4- After Midninght 3- Kaleidoscope 2- Good Luck Babe (I know its not on this album but its like she's singing about me in my early twenties and it's so cathartic) 1- Pink Pony Club (it's so joyful while also being so meaningful, chef's kiss)
The guy you were talking about on Casual was just playing with your heart Luscent :( . Very sad, but sadly that is how we learn to avoid future mistakes
My top 5 are Red Wine Supernova, Pink Pony Club, Hot To Go, Kaleidoscope, and Naked in Manhattan. Honorable mention to Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl and Femininomenon. And all the other songs too honestly i love the whole album ❤
She's truly the ideal mix of heartfelt and camp. And her voice is just killer.
Her tiny desk concert is incredible!

I've been WAITING for this one
loved to see you experiencing this joy for the first time!
my top 5 on the album rn are:
1. red wine supernova
2. hot to go
3. casual
4. femininomenon
5. coffee
I am so happy you love her too!
Also, desperately need you to react to Hozier's new EP 'Unheard'!
Have you listened to any of The Last Dinner Party yet? Their debut album came out recently and I feel like you might like it a lot.
I never thought I'd be watching Tom Holland review Chappell Roan but here we are and I LOVE it! This is such a perfect album and a fab review!
A little secret, (we will listen to the whole record, no cuts and all your reaction!). TH-cam will love the engaging time for all the album reaction.
The way im totally obsessed with this album
youre actually the first person ive seen bring up california dreaming. a lot of people are just focused on the references to dying rust belt towns at that part
Love watching reactions of this album, especially from queer people ☺️. My top 5:
1. After Midnight
2. Naked in Manhattan
3. Red Wine Supernova
4. California
5. Kaleidoscope
Honestly kind of kills me not to have Pink Pony on that list but California hits me in the my life feels as a Midwesterner who has spent most of my adult life away from it. Also, you have to check out her Tiny Desk performance if you haven’t already!
1. My kink is karma. 2. Pink pony club. 3. Red wine supernova. 4. Casual. 5. Kaleidoscope.
yesssss finally! i've been waiting for this one ❤❤❤❤
My top 5 are 1- pink pony club 2- Casual
3- Naked in Manhattan
4- California
5- Red Wine Supernova
I feel like you'd really enjoy Allie X's new album "Girl With No Face". Its very much goth synthpop and its honestly my favorite album ever lol. Also, I'm so happy Chappell is getting the recognition she deserves 😭
Casual, Coffee, Pink Pony Club, Red Wine Supernova and Femininomenon are my current top 5!
I love every song on this album, but here's my top eight.
8. Kaleidoscope
7. After Midnight
6. Naked in Manhattan
5. Femininomenon
4. My Kink is Karma

1. Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl
2. Guilty Pleasure
3. Red Wine Supernova
4. California
5. My Kink is Karma
Red wine Supernova as a title is like a play on "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis (but make it gay) haha
I am trully obsessed to this album. Naked in Manhatam and My Kink is Karma are my favorite. Roan is perferct.
first i was afraid ...everytime I listen to pinkponyclub , I know i'm not the only one
I love this album 💖

-Pink Pony Club
💚💚💚
At 36 I thought my clubbing days were over but this album is making me want to go again . Just imagining a Chappel song come on at one of my local gay clubs, the ABSOLUTE VIBES.
edit : oh yeah my top 5. 5- Casual 4- After Midninght 3- Kaleidoscope 2- Good Luck Babe (I know its not on this album but its like she's singing about me in my early twenties and it's so cathartic) 1- Pink Pony Club (it's so joyful while also being so meaningful, chef's kiss)
Pink Pony Club, Casual, My Kink is Karma, Red Wine Supernova, and Coffee??? I couldn’t decide on the 5th one the songs are too good
The guy you were talking about on Casual was just playing with your heart Luscent :( . Very sad, but sadly that is how we learn to avoid future mistakes
So funny you compared her both to Olivia and Conan because Dan Nigro who produces for both of them also produced on this album!
My top 5 are Red Wine Supernova, Pink Pony Club, Hot To Go, Kaleidoscope, and Naked in Manhattan. Honorable mention to Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl and Femininomenon. And all the other songs too honestly i love the whole album ❤
olivia rodrigo and chappell know eachother. chappell even opened for a couple of olivia's concerts im pretty sure
PLEASE do Muna’s most recent album!!! you’d love them! they opened for taylor swift recently 😊
