Scotland's Top Rated MTB Trail l Heartbreak Ridge, Ballater

- Rated by MBR as one of the Top 5 UK trails, Heartbreak Ridge is a famous 4km black scenic MTB trail in Scotland located in Ballater. The trail is running better than ever after all the recent work done. Situated at Pannanich Hill, the Heartbreak Ridge loop from Ballater is around 17km in total with just over 500m ascent/descent. This scenic black trail can be ridden on any mountain bike but we chose a full travel enduro bike and an ebike.
Rated by MBR magazine as one of the Top 5 UK MTB Trails, Heartbreak ridge has since had a lot of work done by the Aberdeenshire Trails Association and CRC to make it flow better, be more accessible and build a new woods section. You may have seen vlogs on it from other famous TH-camrs such as Scotty Laughland or McTrail Rider. The project was also nominated for project of the year at the dmbins MTB awards last week.
This is a true Scottish MTB trail and we got weather to match! Definitely a trail to put on your list and ride if heading on Scotland MTB trip or up to Deeside. Also good to link it with Mastermind which is also in Ballater.

Love that trail although it was a bit warmer when we rode it in August followed by a swim in the river :-) The hostel in Ballater is ace!
Sounds great! Summer time is the best for Ballater. We had a ride and swim in loch Muick last year.. brilliant!

I love that trail.. rode it last month in similar conditions. I think it suits the bad weather 😀

That trail is so different from 3 years ago. Wow! Well done on riding in those conditions. That is proper Scottish winter weather. Pure mingin!
It is! We don’t remember it too clearly from before but rode it maybe 4 years ago and it was fun but not our favourite. This time it was amazing! Shame about the weather but embraced it!
Definitely a trail that’s worth a go on a dry day! Wet does make it more interesting though 😂

Cheers glad you enjoyed it! Yup would say it’s definitely doable on a hardtail. There’s nothing mental. It’s rough in places but if you ride a hardtail normally it’ll be fine!

Tam was riding off into the distance to grab the pot of gold. And we all know that the downhill is the gold on a MTB trail! Fun fact when you see a double rainbow: the colours are ordered in reverse in the second rainbow.
Haha very true! The downhill is the best part. Every day is a school day. Didn't know that, pretty cool! Was a real bonus getting the rainbows!

It was, such a long way and the worst weather 😅 we embraced it though and was definitely a good laugh!
Never done it yet but I’m looking to do it this year at some point how is the climb
It’s not bad. Does take some time but generally not steep or technical. Mostly a 4x4 track for a lot of it. Would recommend it!
